Houston at a Glance

Houston is a giant, sprawling city. It’s very spread out with a ton of diverse food spots and things to see and do. After multiple trips to H-Town, these are some tips we recommend when visiting!
Important Tip: Houston is huge, so plan your days by area.
Expect Traffic: Houston gets crammed with traffic often. If you’re trying to get anywhere, just give yourself some extra time and avoid rush hours. You can also use the METROrail for central areas.
Plan around the heat: If you’re traveling at the peak of summer, anticipate it to feel like you’re melting into the earth. No joke! It’s hot and humid down here, so keep hydrated, use the underground tunnel system, or plan your trip during cooler weather.
Eat diverse: It would be an absolute shame not to try the variety of food that’s available in Houston. There’s a ton of influence and fusion of cuisines from around the world. You’ll find everything from classic Texas BBQ to Vietnamese-infused crawfish boils. Try it all!
How I Would Spend 2 Days in Houston
Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the US, which means incredible food and a unique mix of culture you won’t find anywhere else. From world-class museums and green spaces to NASA and a buzzing brewery scene, there’s certainly a lot to pack in! This is how I would get the best out of two days in Houston:
Day 1: Start your morning with coffee from Mo’ Brunch + Brew before heading to Hermann Park for a stroll through one of Houston’s green spaces. Then, dive into the city’s food scene on a guided food tour before spending the afternoon exploring the Museum District and wrapping up the day with a standout seafood dinner at La Fisheria.
Day 2: Enjoy breakfast at Hull & Oak before heading out for an unforgettable day with a guided tour of the Space Center Houston. Wind down from a busy day with a craft beer at Saint Arnold Brewery and enjoy pizza for dinner at Grotto Downtown before catching a comedy show at The Secret Group.

Things to do in Houston
1. Cruise the Texas backroads on a Polaris Slingshot tour

Tour Details
You might think of Houston as a city of skyscrapers and space history, but this Polaris Slingshot tour is sure to get your heart racing. Forget crowded tour buses—you’ll get behind the wheel of a three-wheeled roadster and hit the open road on a GPS-guided drive through Houston’s scenic outskirts.
After a quick orientation from the staff, you’ll choose your Slingshot color and hit the road. The vehicle is surprisingly easy to drive, and because it sits low to the ground, you feel much more connected to the road than you would in a regular car. As soon as you pull away, the whole experience feels more like a fun road trip than a typical sightseeing tour.
The route takes you through northwest Houston and into quieter areas with open Texas backroads and small-town scenery. You’ll have time to stop at places like Zube Park to stretch your legs, take a few photos, and enjoy the change of pace before continuing the drive.
What makes this experience stand out is the sense of freedom. You’re not following a guide in a large group, and you can enjoy the drive at your own pace while still having the route planned out for you. Whether you’re a local looking for something fresh or a visitor wanting to see Houston in a whole new way, this is a unique, high-energy outing you won’t forget.
2. Visit the NASA Space Center

Tour Details
Houston is known as Space City for a reason, and there’s no better way to experience that legacy than at Space Center Houston. With a NASA expert leading the way, this immersive tour takes you behind the scenes of America’s space exploration history, from the massive Saturn V rocket to futuristic exhibits and NASA’s working facilities.
The tour will take up most of your day, but it’s 100% worth it. You’ll meet in downtown Houston before hopping on a shuttle out to the Space Center, and your guide will share plenty of insights on the way there.
Exploring the Space Center with a NASA expert takes the experience to a whole new level! Your guide will take you through the most important exhibits and bring them all to life. You’ll learn about the history of space exploration and what the future might look like. It’s so exciting to see highlights like the massive Saturn V rocket and the exhibits in the Starship Gallery.
There are also some really unique experiences here, like boarding a shuttle replica and riding the tram through working NASA facilities. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a live presentation featuring an astronaut currently aboard the International Space Station, which is pretty incredible.
All in all, this tour gives you a much deeper look into NASA than you’d get exploring on your own. It’s easily one of the top things to do in Houston, but don’t just take our word for it – you can read hundreds of 5-star reviews here!
3. Wander the museum district

Spend a few hours exploring Houston’s Museum District, and you’ll see why it’s one of the city’s most popular neighborhoods. With nearly 20 museums clustered within walking distance of each other, it’s easy to build a day around whatever interests you most. You can explore everything from fine art and natural science to history, space, and culture without spending a ton of time in the car.
We love the Houston Museum of Natural Science; it’s one of the most popular museums in the country, with everything from dinosaur skeletons to ancient Egyptian artifacts to see! The museum is also home to the Cockrell Butterfly Center and Burke Baker Planetarium, so you could easily spend several hours exploring.
If you’ve got extra time or different interests, there are plenty of other great options nearby, including the Museum of Fine Arts, the Contemporary Arts Museum, the Children’s Museum, and even the zoo! Whether you’re traveling with kids, love art, or want to dive into science and history, there’s plenty here to fill an entire day.
Even if you don’t plan to visit multiple museums, the area is really nice to walk around. You’ll find wide sidewalks, public art, and green spaces along with plenty of cafés nearby when you’re ready for a break.
4. Taste your way around the city

Tour Details
If you’re a foodie like me, then you have to add this Houston food tour to your itinerary! We ate our way through Downtown Houston, discovering some of the city’s best-kept secrets and unique flavors along the way.
Our guide was fantastic, leading us to six different food stops where we tried everything from quesabirria tacos to brisket eggrolls, Vietnamese chicken and rice, and homemade biscuits with gravy. Every dish was carefully chosen to reflect Houston’s diverse food scene, and just when we thought we couldn’t eat any more, the “secret dish” was revealed—an unexpected but perfect way to end the tour!
Between bites, we learned about Houston’s history, culture, and architecture, making this experience more than just a food tour—it was an inside look at what makes the city so special. The small group size made it feel personal and laid-back, and we loved getting to chat with the other food lovers in our group.
If you’re looking for a delicious, fun, and unique way to experience Houston, this walking food tour is the way to do it. Just make sure you come hungry—you’ll need the room!
5. Spend a day at Buffalo Bayou

It’s hard to believe you’re still in the middle of Houston when you’re wandering through Buffalo Bayou Park. Stretching along the water just west of downtown, this sprawling green space is the perfect place to slow down, enjoy the skyline, and get some fresh air. Whether you want to walk, bike, paddle, or simply relax, it’s an easy escape from the city’s busy streets.
As you explore, you’ll pass public art, gardens, bridges, and plenty of open green space where people gather to picnic or relax. If you’re feeling more active, you can rent a kayak or paddleboard and see the bayou from the water. Keep an eye out for turtles, herons, and other wildlife that call the park home!
There are plenty of benches and shaded spots if you want to take a break, and the park is especially nice in the morning or around sunset when temperatures are cooler. I like to grab a coffee and make this a morning jaunt. It’s a super accessible escape right in the middle of the city!
6. See Houston’s top sights on a sightseeing van tour

Tour Details
If you want to see the best of Houston in just a couple of hours, this sightseeing tour is the way to do it!
You’ll be picked up in a comfortable, air-conditioned van and set off on a fun ride through the city, covering all the must-see landmarks without having to worry about walking in the Texas heat.
The guides are always super knowledgeable and full of fun facts about Houston’s history, culture, and local hot spots. You’ll cruise past major attractions like Minute Maid Park, Toyota Center, Discovery Green, and Buffalo Bayou, where you’ll get to see a totally different side of the city with its scenic waterfront and skyline views.
You’ll also drive through River Oaks, home to some of Houston’s most luxurious mansions, and check out the historic architecture around Market Square Park. By the end of the tour, you’ll feel like you have a solid understanding of Houston’s layout and tons of ideas for places to revisit later.
We love that there is an option to upgrade to a private tour for more of a personalized experience. If you’re short on time or just want a fun introduction to the city, this tour is a perfect way to start your trip – there’s a reason it has so many great reviews!
7. Get a private tour of Galveston

Tour Details
While Houston is full of sights to keep you busy, it’s still fun to throw in a tour that’s out of the norm. This private tour of Galveston adds a fun coastal twist to your Texas experience. I mean, why not visit an island when given the opportunity?
You’ll be picked up in a comfy, air-conditioned vehicle and driven just under an hour south to Galveston Island. Your guide will lead you to some of Galveston’s best-known landmarks, like the Historic Pleasure Pier, Bishop’s Palace, The Strand, and the Seawall. Along the way, you’ll get to hear stories about the city’s history and unique architecture.
Since it’s a private tour, there’s plenty of flexibility. If something catches your eye, you can spend a little more time there or change the route to focus on what interests you most. It feels much more personal than a standard city tour, and you’ll have the chance to ask questions throughout the day.
The highlight of the tour is definitely spending some time along the Seawall. Although it’s not a full beach day experience, it’s so nice to see the wide sandy beach and blue Gulf waters after spending time in landlocked Houston.
By the end of the tour, you’ll have a much better feel for Galveston and its different neighborhoods. Whether you’re there for the history, pretty buildings, or coastal views, this tour gives you a little bit of everything!

8. Find Houston’s photo-worthy murals on a golf cart Instagram tour

Tour Details
Houston is bursting with incredible street art! Since there are so many murals to see within the sprawling city, joining this mural tour is the best way to observe them without missing a beat.
You’ll spend a few hours driving around in a fun, open-air electric cart, discovering the city’s most vibrant murals, learning about the artists behind them, and, of course, snapping some seriously Instagram-worthy photos!
There are famous murals and hidden gems on this tour that you wouldn’t normally find on your own. Each stop has its own story, whether it’s a massive portrait of a Houston legend or a colorful abstract piece tucked away in a quiet alley. No two murals are the same, and every stop feels like stepping into a new work of art!
What makes this tour even better? There’s no stress about directions, parking, or crowds. (It can be difficult to navigate the murals on your own in the middle of the infamous Houston traffic) The cart pulls you right up to each mural, giving you plenty of time to take photos and soak it all in.
For anyone who loves art, photography, or just wants a unique way to experience Houston, this tour is a must-do. By the end, your camera rolls will be full, and you’ll have a whole new appreciation for Houston’s creative side!
9. See the Beer Can House

For something totally unique to Houston, make time to visit the Beer Can House! It’s one of Houston’s most adored attractions and gives you a further look into the city’s preservation of its creative side.
The Beer Can House started as one man’s home improvement project that slowly turned into a neighborhood landmark. Thousands of flattened beer cans, bottle caps, and other recycled materials cover the house and yard. While it’s quirky, it’s quite impressive. It’s really a striking piece of art that’s become a staple in the city.
You can visit the Beer Can House on a self-guided or staff-led walk around the property Wednesday through Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm. Also check out their schedule for quarterly block parties and monthly garden parties!
A visit to the beloved Beer Can House will give you an “out of the ordinary” break from some of the more traditional museums and attractions. Plus, it’s totally free admission!
10. Explore Houston’s highlights and dive into the Downtown Aquarium

Tour Details
Houston may be massive, but this city tour made it feel personal—and paired with a full day at the Downtown Aquarium, it turned into the perfect way to explore, sightsee, and have some all-ages fun.
We started off in a comfy sightseeing bus, cruising past downtown landmarks like Buffalo Bayou, the Toyota Center, and Market Square Park. Our guide was full of interesting facts, local tips, and even pointed out some amazing murals along the way (perfect photo ops!).
One of them stretched the entire side of a building! It was so vibrant, we hopped off for a quick pic before moving on.
The vibe was relaxed but informative—great for first-time visitors or anyone wanting a laid-back intro to the city. After the tour, we grabbed our tickets and made our way to the Downtown Aquarium. It’s more than just fish tanks—there were all kinds of exhibits, rides, and even a few unexpected thrills (hello, underwater shark train!).
We loved that we could explore at our own pace and stay as long as we wanted. One of us even snagged a free appetizer at the restaurant with our pass, which was a fun little bonus.
Whether you’re trying to pack a lot into one day or just want a mix of chill sightseeing and family-friendly fun, this combo tour really delivers.
11. Enjoy the surroundings at Hermann Park

Houston isn’t known for being very walkable, which is why Hermann Park feels like such a breath of fresh air! This huge green space sits right in the heart of the city and has been a local favorite for over 100 years.
Home to several of Houston’s biggest attractions, including the zoo and multiple museums, it’s also easy to reach by METRORail, with a stop right by the park, making it a convenient place to escape the car for a few hours.
The park is beautifully maintained, with wide walking paths, lakes, and plenty of shaded areas. Make sure to check out the McGovern Centennial Gardens, which are landscaped across a small hill and offer great views at the top, as well as the peaceful Japanese Garden, which is a bit more tucked away.
One of the most popular things to do here is rent a pedal boat and head out on McGovern Lake. It’s a fun way to see the park from the water, and you’ll usually spot ducks and turtles along the way.
12. Sip your way through Houston on a private brewery cart tour

Tour Details
Houston’s craft beer scene is booming, but finding the best breweries in a city this size can be overwhelming. That’s why this private brewery tour by electric cart was such a win: no guesswork, no driving, just great beer, great vibes, and a fun ride in between.
We hopped into a sleek electric cart with our guide, who instantly felt more like a friend than a tour leader. Once they knew the kind of brews we liked, they tailored the stops perfectly—think hoppy IPAs, smooth lagers, and creative seasonal blends.
Our favorite stop was Frost Town Brewing. The laid-back vibe instantly pulled us in, the staff made us feel like regulars, and that citrusy pale ale was bright, crisp, and seriously unforgettable. We’re still craving another pour!
Each brewery had its own unique vibe, from industrial-chic taprooms to cozy, hidden gems. We even got to chat with a few of the brewers and hear how their creations came to life.
The cart itself was a highlight too—quiet, breezy, and just quirky enough to turn a few heads as we cruised through downtown. Between stops, we rolled past colorful murals and artsy corners of the city that felt like bonus sightseeing moments.
Whether you’re celebrating, out with friends, or just looking to sample Houston’s best beers without the hassle, this two-hour brewery hop is the way to do it.

An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of buying a little plastic chip and swapping it into your phone, you just download it. It connects your phone to a local network in whatever country you’re visiting — no stores, no waiting, and no fiddling with tiny cards.
In simple terms, it’s the easiest way to get data and stay connected while traveling.
We’ve tested a bunch of eSIMs over the years, and after a few frustrating experiences, we’ve found our favorite — Airalo. It’s fast, reliable, and incredibly easy to use. You can set it up in minutes (even my mom managed it solo on her first try!), and the prices are some of the best out there.
