Day 1
Breakfast – The Hideout Restaurant

We’re kicking off our first morning in Key Largo with breakfast at The Hideout Restaurant, a beloved waterfront diner that’s been feeding locals and visitors for over 20 years! And in true American diner style, the menu is packed with breakfast classics, including French toast, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, and just about every kind of omelet you can imagine. But since we’re in the Florida Keys, you could always go for seafood for breakfast and get the crab-cake Benedict or a lobster omelet.
The weather was really nice when we visited, so we grabbed a table on the waterfront patio and enjoyed gorgeous views while we ate. But don’t worry, there’s also plenty of indoor seating if you’d rather escape the Florida heat!
We got here around 8 am and spent about an hour enjoying our breakfast. From here, it’s only about a five-minute drive to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, which is where we’re heading next!
Morning – Spend the morning around Cannon Beach and the mangrove trails
After breakfast, we’re heading to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, which is only about a five-minute drive away. This was actually the first undersea park established in the United States, so it’s a pretty special place!
We’ll start at the Environmental Education Visitor Center, where you can learn about the incredible marine life around Key Largo. There’s even an aquarium here where you can see some of the tropical fish that inhabit the nearby reefs. It’s a nice little preview of what we’ll hopefully see on tomorrow’s snorkeling tour.
Then it’s time to stretch your legs on the Mangrove Trail, which is a short, easy walk through the park’s coastal vegetation. You’ll learn all about how mangroves protect the shoreline and provide a home for young marine animals. If you’re feeling energetic, the Wild Tamarind Trail also takes you through a lovely stretch of tropical forest.
But we definitely want to save some time for Cannon Beach! This is a small, sheltered beach where you can relax beneath the trees and go for a swim if the conditions are good. You can even snorkel here, although we’re saving the real underwater exploring for tomorrow when we head out to the offshore reefs!
The park opens daily from 8 am until sunset, and admission costs around $8 USD per vehicle, plus a small per-person fee. We’d suggest arriving around 9:15 am and spending about two and a half hours here. That gives you plenty of time to explore without rushing before we head off for lunch.
Lunch – Try fresh Florida Keys seafood at Lazy Lobster

All that exploring calls for a good lunch, and Lazy Lobster Seafood Restaurant is only about a five-minute drive away, so it just makes sense! This colorful restaurant is a great place to try fresh Florida Keys seafood, and it has a nice outdoor garden where you can enjoy your meal.
The menu is packed with delicious options, but the selection of lobster rolls is what really stood out to us. There are plenty of other options, too, like pasta and salads, if you don’t want to eat seafood 24/7. Either way, we definitely recommend saving room for a slice of their homemade Key lime pie for dessert. You’re in the Florida Keys, after all!
Early afternoon – Walk through Key Largo’s tropical hardwood forest
After lunch, we’re heading about 10 minutes north to Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park. It’s a bit of a mouthful, we know, but this beautiful park is well worth visiting.
The park protects one of the largest remaining stretches of West Indian tropical hardwood forest in the US, so it’s completely different from the beaches and mangroves we’ve explored so far. Miles of walking trails run through here, but we’re going to stick to the shorter paved route, which takes you through the lush tropical forest. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife along the way, because we saw everything from white-crowned pigeons and colorful butterflies to lizards while we were here.
Admission is just $2.50 USD per person, so this is a nice, budget-friendly activity to add in. Just bring plenty of drinking water, since there’s none available inside the park, and insect repellent is a good idea too!
Come here straight after lunch and spend an hour or so exploring. Then, head back to the hotel to freshen up before this evening’s adventure. We’ve got a pretty fun night planned!
Evening – Watch the sunset from a floating tiki boat

Now it’s time for one of our favorite activities on this itinerary! We’re heading out on this two-hour sunset cruise around Key Largo aboard a floating tiki bar. Yep, you heard that right. We think whoever came up with that idea deserves a raise!
With only six passengers on board, it’s a pretty intimate experience. And best of all, even though it’s a “bar,” it’s actually BYOB! You can bring your favorite drinks, and a cooler full of ice will be waiting on board, along with cups and bottle openers, so you don’t need to worry about any of that. You can even choose your own music, so it’s a pretty sweet setup if you ask us.
Your captain will take you around the bay, where you might spot dolphins and manatees. You may also stop for a swim if conditions allow, then settle in to watch the sunset with a drink in hand. This is the life!
The cruise departs from behind Snook’s Bayside Restaurant, where we’ll also be having dinner. Departure times vary by season, so we recommend booking your cruise first and planning dinner around it. Just make sure to arrive at least 15 minutes early, use the restroom before boarding, and bring a light layer in case it gets chilly on the water.
Dinner – Snook’s Bayside

One of the best things about our sunset tiki cruise is that it departs from Snooks Bayside Restaurant & Grand Tiki Bar, which is also a fantastic place to have dinner. How convenient is that?
This fun waterfront restaurant has a huge open-air dining area overlooking Florida Bay, so you can enjoy some gorgeous views while you eat. There’s often live music in the evenings, too, which makes for a really fun atmosphere!
We’re sure it won’t be a surprise that the menu here is all about seafood. We loved the coconut shrimp, and then we shared a huge mixed seafood platter between us. It had lobster, shrimp, scallops… the lot!
Not a seafood fan? Don’t worry, there are steaks, burgers, and chicken dishes on the menu, too. And of course, there’s Key lime pie for dessert, because you can never have too much of that in Florida.
One thing worth knowing is that Snook’s only accepts reservations for groups of 10 or more, so it’s first come, first served for smaller parties. You can eat before or after the cruise, but we do recommend arriving a little early if you’re eating before the cruise, just to be on the safe side!
Day 2
Breakfast – Doc’s Diner

We’ve got a pretty exciting day ahead, because today we’re heading out to explore Key Largo’s famous coral reefs! But first, breakfast.
We’re starting at Doc’s Diner, an old-school American diner on the Overseas Highway. The food is indulgent, and the portions are generous – what more could you want this morning?
We do recommend starting with something fairly substantial today, because we’ll be out on the water for a while. The good news is that you don’t need to arrive too early today, as the tour starts a bit later. We got here at around 9:30 am and spent about an hour here before driving over to the dive center. Take your time and tuck in!
Morning – Snorkel two of Key Largo’s best reefs

Yesterday we got a little introduction to Key Largo’s marine life at John Pennekamp, but today we’ll see the real deal. We’re heading out on this three-hour snorkeling tour, which takes you to TWO different coral reefs. You absolutely cannot miss this while you’re in Key Largo!
You’ll board a boat at Silent World Dive Center and cruise out into the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Then it’s time to jump in and explore!
The reefs here are teeming with colorful tropical fish, and you might even spot sea turtles, stingrays, eels, and nurse sharks. And depending on the conditions, you could get to snorkel above the famous Christ of the Abyss statue, which sits beneath the water near Dry Rocks reef. How cool is that?

All your snorkeling equipment is included, along with reef-safe sunscreen, drinks, and snacks, so you don’t need to worry about bringing much along. However, you do need to be a confident swimmer, as you’ll be snorkeling in the open ocean.
We recommend booking the 11:15 am option and arriving at Silent World Dive Center by 11 am to check in. You’ll be out exploring for around three hours, so we should be back in time for a well-earned late lunch!
Why We Book Tours with Viator
Viator is a trusted online booking system for tours around the world! We almost always book our tours using Viator for a couple of reasons:
Late lunch – Alfredo’s Cookhouse

After spending three hours snorkeling, we reckon you’ll have worked up quite an appetite! So we’re heading to Alfredo’s Cookhouse, a family-owned restaurant that’s only about a five-minute drive from the dive center.
We’ve eaten quite a lot of seafood so far on this trip, so we thought it was time to mix things up a little! Alfredo’s has over 50 dishes on the menu, with everything from Mexican and Italian food to American classics and Japanese-inspired dishes. Talk about variety!
The chicken and steak hibachi dishes are popular choices here, but we’re also tempted by the huge island burrito and creamy chicken Alfredo. And the portions are pretty generous, which is exactly what you want after an active morning in the water!
Aim to arrive around 2:30 pm and enjoy a leisurely late lunch before heading off around 4 pm. From here, it’s about a 15-minute drive to the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary, where we’ll spend the rest of our afternoon.
Late afternoon – Meet the rescued residents of the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary

After lunch, we’re heading about 15 minutes south to the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary. We’ve spent most of today admiring Key Largo’s underwater wildlife, but now it’s time to give some of its feathered residents a little attention instead.
The sanctuary provides a permanent home for rescued birds that can’t safely return to the wild. You’ll find all sorts of shorebirds here, as well as owls, hawks, and even pelicans. A self-guided boardwalk takes you past their enclosures, and you can read about how the birds ended up here. Unfortunately, some of their stories are pretty sad, but it’s heartening to see them being so well cared for now.
And the setting is gorgeous! The boardwalk winds through a peaceful, leafy area before finishing right beside Florida Bay, where you can stop and enjoy the waterfront views.
Admission is free, although donations are encouraged to help fund the sanctuary’s rescue and rehabilitation work. And that’s fair enough, because looking after all those birds can’t be cheap.
We suggest arriving around 4:15 pm and allowing about an hour to an hour and a half to explore. If you’re visiting during winter, it’s worth getting here a little earlier before the sun goes down. Afterward, we’ll head back to the hotel to freshen up before dinner.
Dinner – Bayside Grille & Sunset Bar

After a busy day of snorkeling and sightseeing, we’re heading to Bayside Grille for dinner. This gorgeous waterfront restaurant overlooks Florida Bay, and it has huge panoramic windows, so you can enjoy the views while you eat. There’s also outdoor seating if you fancy dining al fresco!
The menu blends Florida Keys seafood with Caribbean-inspired dishes, and there’s plenty to choose from. And of course, there’s Key lime pie for dessert. We wouldn’t judge you for ordering another slice!
We suggest booking a table for around 7 pm, especially on weekends, as this is a popular spot around sunset. Then, when you’ve finished dinner, we’re heading downstairs to the lively waterfront bar below to wrap up the day with live music.
Evening – Listen to live music at the Bayside Sunset Bar
We’re keeping things nice and easy tonight, because after dinner, all you need to do is head downstairs to the Bayside Sunset Bar. This lively waterfront bar has live music seven nights a week, so you can grab a drink, enjoy the views over Florida Bay, and listen to some great tunes. Sounds like a great way to round off the day, if you ask us!
The performers and start times vary, so it’s worth checking the entertainment schedule before your visit. And the best part is that there’s no rush! You can stay for another drink or two, or head back to your hotel if all that snorkeling has caught up with you.
Day 3
Breakfast – Lido 73

We’re kicking off our final day in Key Largo with breakfast at Lido 73, a waterside restaurant overlooking Tavernier Creek. And yes, we’re having breakfast by the water again, but can you really blame us?
The menu has a bit of an Italian twist, which we love! You can order lemon ricotta pancakes, avocado toast, or Italian-style eggs Benedict with prosciutto and pesto. If the weather’s nice, try to grab an outdoor table overlooking the creek. It’s a gorgeous setting for a leisurely breakfast, although we can’t get too carried away because we’ve got somewhere to be!
We recommend arriving around 8:30 am and finishing breakfast by 9:45 am. Luckily, our kayaking tour departs from just down the road, so it’s only a five-minute walk to the meeting point. You’ll need to check in by 10 am, ready for the 10:30 am departure.
Morning – Paddle through Tavernier Creek’s mangroves

Now that we’ve fueled up, it’s time to hit the water! We’re joining this two-hour guided kayaking tour, which takes us through the beautiful mangroves around Tavernier Creek. And hopefully, some wildlife will join you along the way!
The tour begins with a quick kayaking lesson, so don’t worry if you’re a complete beginner. You’ll then follow your local guide through narrow mangrove passages and shallow waterways, paddling over seagrass beds and sandy patches as you go.
And keep your fingers crossed for manatees. These gentle giants live here year-round, and you may spot one swimming nearby. Dolphins, turtles, stingrays, and tropical birds are also regularly seen in the area, so keep your eyes peeled!

Your guide will help you spot wildlife and explain a little about the mangrove ecosystem, too. Plus, groups are limited to 12 people, so it won’t feel like you’re part of a kayak traffic jam.
You can choose between a single or tandem kayak, and all equipment is included! With over 1,400 glowing reviews, this tour is clearly a favorite, so we recommend booking your spot in advance to avoid missing out.
We recommend taking the 10:30 am tour, which means arriving at the meeting point by 10 am to check in. You’ll finish around 12:30 pm, just in time to grab some lunch nearby.
Lunch – What The Fish?

After two hours of kayaking, we’ve definitely earned some lunch! Fortunately, we won’t have to go very far, because What The Fish? Rolls & More is just a short walk from the kayak shop. And with a name like that, how could we resist?
This casual seafood restaurant specializes in fresh, locally caught fish, and it’s especially known for its seafood rolls. We really liked the Roller Lobster sandwich, but they also have fish tacos and ceviche, plus plenty of grilled options.
You can sit outside here and watch the boats coming in and out of Tavernier Creek Marina. You should get here at around 1 pm, and head off to Harry Harris Park when you’re ready. We’ll spend a relaxed afternoon by the beach, so there’s no need to stress about timings.
Afternoon – Slow down at Harry Harris Park
After a morning of kayaking and a delicious lunch, you’ve definitely earned a spot of relaxation! For our final afternoon in Key Largo, we’re heading to Harry Harris Park, only about a 5- to 10-minute drive away. Just be aware that non-Monroe County residents may need to pay a $15 USD vehicle entrance fee, particularly on weekends and holidays.
Now, Key Largo isn’t exactly famous for its beaches, but this lovely oceanfront park has a protected swimming area where the water is usually nice and calm. It’s a great place to cool off, especially if you’re traveling with kids. There’s a playground here for them to enjoy, too!
There are plenty of picnic tables and shady spots where you can sit back and chill out. You’re on vacation, after all. Stay here until around 5 pm, which should give you a couple of hours to unwind before heading back to your hotel to get ready for your final evening in Key Largo.
We suggest arriving around 2:45 pm and staying until about 5 pm, which gives us a couple of hours to unwind before heading back to the hotel to get ready for our final evening.
Dinner – Sundowners

For our final dinner in Key Largo, we’re heading to Sundowners, a gorgeous waterfront restaurant that’s been serving up delicious food and sunset views since 1985. And trust us, the sunsets over Florida Bay are worth planning your dinner around!
The restaurant has a lovely outdoor patio right beside the water, plus a covered deck and an indoor dining room with huge windows. So even if the weather doesn’t cooperate, you can still enjoy the views!
As you’d probably expect by now, seafood is a big deal here. But don’t worry if you’ve reached your seafood limit for the trip, because the menu has plenty of other options, including steak and ribs. And for dessert, we think the chocolate toffee mousse cake sounds pretty irresistible if you’re ready to deviate from Key lime pie.
We recommend booking a table around 30-45 minutes before sunset, and you can request an outdoor table when you book, although they’re not guaranteed.
Evening – Toast to your trip at the famous Caribbean Club

We’re rounding out our three days in Key Largo with a drink at the Caribbean Club, which is one of the area’s oldest and most iconic bars. This place has been around since 1938, and it’s got plenty of character! If these walls could talk…
We love the Caribbean Club because it’s an old-school Floridian watering hole, adorned with memorabilia from the classic 1948 film Key Largo. It’s pretty cool if you’re a movie buff!
They usually have live music Thursday through Sunday, and Wednesdays are karaoke nights. So if you’re feeling brave, you could always get up and give everyone a performance! Otherwise, you can just grab a drink and enjoy the waterfront setting.
Speaking of drinks, the signature Key Lime Pie Rum Punch sounds like a fitting way to toast the end of your Florida Keys adventure. You know, just in case you haven’t had quite enough Key lime-flavored things on this trip! Just remember that the Caribbean Club is cash only, although there’s an ATM on-site if you forget.
And that’s a wrap on our three days in Key Largo! We hope you’ve fallen in love with this beautiful part of Florida as much as we have.

Where to Stay in Key Largo

Now that you know how to spend three days in Key Largo, it’s time to find somewhere to stay!
Most hotels line the Overseas Highway, so it’s worth having a car to get around. However, some fantastic waterfront properties are available, and you don’t necessarily need to splurge on a luxury resort to enjoy beautiful views of Florida Bay. We’ve picked three great options for different budgets below!
Baker’s Cay Resort- $$$
If you’re looking to treat yourself, Baker’s Cay Resort is our top choice! This beautiful Hilton resort sits on a secluded stretch of Florida Bay, surrounded by tropical greenery, and it’s pretty much everything you could want from a luxury getaway in the Keys.
For starters, it has a private beach with hammocks and loungers, plus two gorgeous swimming pools. You can also kayak or paddleboard right from the resort, so there’s plenty to keep you entertained even when you’re not out exploring.
Several restaurants and bars are also on-site, including Calusa, which serves Caribbean-inspired cuisine overlooking Florida Bay. And if you fancy a cocktail on the beach, there’s a tiki bar for that, too. Of course there is! Rooms typically range from around $300–$600+ USD per night, depending on the season and room type. Check prices and book your stay at Baker’s Cay Resort here!
Hampton Inn Key Largo – $$
Hampton Inn Key Largo is a great option if you want somewhere comfortable and well-located without paying luxury resort prices. It’s right along the Overseas Highway, just half a mile from John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, so it’s especially convenient if you’re planning to snorkel or scuba dive.
But what really sets this hotel apart is its waterfront setting. It has a small private beach overlooking Florida Bay, plus an outdoor swimming pool and a tiki bar. Not bad for a Hampton Inn! It also offers free parking, Wi-Fi, and a fitness center, so you’ve got all the essentials covered. All in all, this is a fantastic middle-ground option.
You still get that lovely Florida Keys waterfront experience, just without quite so many extras to pay for! Rooms generally cost around $150–$400 USD per night, making this a great mid-range option in Key Largo. Book your stay at Hampton Inn Key Largo here!
The Pelican Key Largo Cottages – $
If you’re looking for somewhere affordable with a bit more personality than your average chain hotel, we think that The Pelican Key Largo Cottages is a great little find! This laid-back waterfront property has a collection of individually decorated cottages and suites, right on the shores of Florida Bay.
It has a charming, old-school Florida Keys feel, and the location is fantastic, with restaurants and bars within walking distance. And here’s our favorite part: the property has its own little beach and docks where you can sit and watch the sunset. Guests can even use the kayaks for free, which is a pretty fantastic perk for a budget-friendly stay!
Rooms typically start around $100–$300 USD per night, although larger waterfront suites can cost more. Find the best prices and book your stay at The Pelican Key Largo Cottages here!

An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of buying a little plastic chip and swapping it into your phone, you just download it. It connects your phone to a local network in whatever country you’re visiting — no stores, no waiting, and no fiddling with tiny cards.
In simple terms, it’s the easiest way to get data and stay connected while traveling.
We’ve tested a bunch of eSIMs over the years, and after a few frustrating experiences, we’ve found our favorite — Airalo. It’s fast, reliable, and incredibly easy to use. You can set it up in minutes (even my mom managed it solo on her first try!), and the prices are some of the best out there.
