Austin is such a fun city to plan a trip around because each neighborhood has its own personality. You’ve got live music, rooftop bars, food trucks, colorful murals, and some seriously good restaurants, all wrapped up in that creative energy the city is known for!

However, Austin is quite spread out and car-dependent when it comes to getting from one area to another, so where you stay matters! For that reason, we’ve chosen our favorite areas to stay in Austin, along with hotel picks for every budget to help you find the perfect base.

Overview of the Best Areas to Stay in Austin 

Austin is full of trendy, eclectic neighborhoods, and that’s exactly what makes it such a fun city to visit. Each area has its own personality, so where you stay really depends on what kind of trip you want.

Downtown is the most central option and our top pick for first-time visitors. It puts you close to Sixth Street, historic sights, rooftop bars, and lots of restaurants, so it’s a great choice if you want to be in the middle of everything. East Austin has a more local feel and is one of the best areas for food, with food trucks, breweries, coffee shops, and casual restaurants all over the place.

Then you’ve got South Congress, or SoCo, which is a little further out but full of color, murals, boutiques, and fun places to eat. Rainey Street is the best choice if nightlife is your priority, with bungalow-style bars and a social atmosphere right on your doorstep.

Getting around Austin is easiest by rental car or Uber. Public transport is limited, so it’s worth factoring transport into your plans when choosing where to stay.

• Downtown – Best for first-time visitors – This is the most central area in Austin, with easy access to Sixth Street, Lady Bird Lake, restaurants, bars, and major attractions. citizenM Austin Downtown is a fun, modern stay with compact but clever rooms and a great location for exploring.

BEST FOR FIRST TIME VISITORS

We think that Downtown Austin is the best place to stay if it’s your first time visiting and you want to be right in the middle of everything. This is the heart of the city, so you’ll be close to live music, rooftop bars, great restaurants, and lots of the main sights.

Sixth Street is the area’s most famous nightlife strip, and while it can get pretty rowdy, it’s definitely part of the classic Austin experience! You’ll also be close to Congress Avenue, the Texas State Capitol, and Lady Bird Lake, where you can walk, bike, or get out on the water. We love how easy it is to mix city sightseeing with a bit of outdoor time here.

Downtown is also one of the most walkable parts of Austin, which is a big bonus in a city where public transport is fairly limited. Tours often depart from this area, too, so it’s a really practical base for exploring. 

To be honest, the main downside is that you’ll pay more to stay here. But if you want convenience, energy, and easy access to Austin’s best-known spots, Downtown is hard to beat.

Fairmont Austin – $$$

Fairmont Austin is a gorgeous luxury hotel right in the heart of Downtown, and it’s a great choice if you want to treat yourself a little (okay, a lot!). It’s located close to Rainey Street, the convention center, and Lady Bird Lake, so you’ve got restaurants and nightlife within easy reach, as well as beautiful waterfront walks.

The hotel feels very resort-like for a city stay, which is why we love it! There’s a beautiful rooftop pool, several restaurants and bars, a spa, and spacious rooms with great skyline views. We think it’s perfect if you want that full-service hotel experience while still being close to all the action. Rooms here usually start at around $300 USD per night.

If Fairmont Austin is fully booked, Hotel ZaZa Austin is another stylish option nearby in the Warehouse District, close to restaurants, bars, and Downtown nightlife. It has a fun, boutique-luxury feel with bold interiors, a rooftop pool, and a great spa.

JW Marriott Austin is another excellent alternative right on Congress Avenue, within walking distance of Lady Bird Lake and plenty of restaurants. It’s a large, polished hotel with multiple dining options, a rooftop pool, and comfortable rooms.

citizenM Austin Downtown – $$

We think that citizenM Austin Downtown is a fantastic option because it’s modern, fun, and super central, but staying here won’t break the bank! It’s located right in Downtown, so you’re close to Sixth Street, Congress Avenue, restaurants, bars, and lots of Austin’s main sights.

The rooms here are compact, but they’re very cleverly designed with comfy beds, smart controls, and a bright, colorful style. The hotel also has a rooftop pool, a 24/7 canteen-style restaurant, and lots of cool communal spaces if you want somewhere to hang out.

It’s not the place to book if you need loads of room, but for a stylish city stay in a great location, it’s a brilliant pick. Rooms here usually start at around $170 USD per night.

If citizenM is booked up, Hyatt Centric Congress Avenue Austin is another great option in a super central spot, close to the Capitol, theatres, and Downtown restaurants. It has modern rooms, a rooftop bar, and a polished boutique feel.

Omni Austin Hotel Downtown is another solid alternative close to Sixth Street and the Warehouse District. It has a more classic hotel feel, and there’s a really fun rooftop pool area, which is the perfect place to hang out on Austin’s hot summer days!

Placemakr Downtown Austin – $ 

Placemakr Downtown Austin is a great budget-friendly option if you want more space and a central location without paying luxury hotel prices. It’s set right in Downtown, so you’re close to Sixth Street, restaurants, bars, and Lady Bird Lake.

This property offers fun and modern apartments and studios, so it’s perfect for self-catering! We like it because you get to pretend you actually live in Austin, and there’s an outdoor pool and stylish communal areas with lots of natural light to hang out in. Rooms here usually start at around $160 USD per night.

If Placemakr is fully booked, Hampton Inn and Suites Austin University Capitol is another affordable option north of Downtown, close to the Capitol and UT Austin. It has contemporary rooms and complimentary breakfast, and it’s pet-friendly!

Hilton Garden Inn Austin University Capitol District has a fun, fresh feel and offers easy access to the Capitol, museums, and Downtown. It offers modern rooms, two restaurants, and self-service laundry facilities. 

East Austin

BEST FOR FOODIES & A LOCAL VIBE

• More local, creative feel than Downtown

Cons

• Less convenient for classic sightseeing
• You’ll likely need Uber or a car to get around

East Austin is one of the coolest areas to stay in the city, especially if food is a big part of your trip! This part of Austin has changed a lot over the years, and today it’s packed with food trucks, craft breweries, coffee shops, cocktail bars, and live music spots.

We think this area is perfect if you’ve been to Austin before or if you want somewhere that feels a bit more local than Downtown. It’s less about big tourist attractions and more about eating well, bar-hopping, and finding fun little neighborhood spots. Franklin Barbecue is the big-name stop here, but there are tons of other great places to try, too, from casual taco trucks to stylish restaurants.

East Austin also has a creative energy that makes it really fun to explore. You’ll find murals, independent shops, and a younger, more social crowd, especially around East 6th Street.

The main downside is that it’s not quite as central for sightseeing. But if you’re here for food, drinks, and a more local Austin vibe, East Austin is a brilliant choice.

ARRIVE Austin – $$$ 

ARRIVE Austin is a great choice if you want to stay somewhere stylish that really fits the East Austin vibe. It’s located right on East 6th Street, so you’ll have restaurants, cocktail bars, coffee shops, and live music spots right on your doorstep.

The hotel has a cool, modern feel with an industrial edge, so it feels very much like the neighborhood around it. Rooms are spacious and design-focused, with big windows and warm wood details, and there are several food and drink spots on site, including a trendy coffee shop, which makes it very easy to settle in. Rooms here usually start at around $200 USD per night.

If ARRIVE Austin is fully booked, The Frances Modern Inn is another lovely option nearby, set in a quieter part of East Austin but still close to restaurants and cafés. It has a boutique, residential feel with beautifully designed rooms and a peaceful garden setting.

East Austin Hotel – $$

East Austin Hotel is a fun mid-range option with a retro feel and a great location. It’s set right in the heart of East Austin, close to East 6th Street, so you’ll be within easy walking distance of bars, restaurants, food trucks, and coffee shops.

We love the hotel’s colorful design and all of the playful touches, like striped robes and the seventies-inspired decor of the pool bar. There are also some cute firepits where you can gather on the cooler evenings during the winter months.

All in all, we think it’s a great pick if you want somewhere social and stylish without going too expensive! Rooms here usually start at around $180 USD per night.

If East Austin Hotel is booked up, Hampton Inn by Hilton Austin East Side 5th Street is another reliable option nearby, close to restaurants and bars along East 6th. It has modern rooms, free breakfast, and a pool, which adds great value for the area.

Sentral East Austin at 1630 E Sixth is another strong alternative if you want more of an apartment-style stay. It offers spacious units with kitchens, plus a pool and fitness center, making it ideal for longer stays.

DoubleTree by Hilton Austin-University Area – $ 

DoubleTree by Hilton Austin-University Area is a solid budget-friendly option if you want to stay near East Austin without paying boutique hotel prices. It’s located closer to the University of Texas and the Moody Center, so it’s especially handy if you’re in town for an event or want easy access to both Downtown and East Austin.

The hotel itself is straightforward but contemporary, with clean rooms, a pool, and an on-site restaurant. It’s not the most character-filled stay, but it’s reliable and practical, which can be exactly what you need when you’re trying to keep costs down while staying comfy. Rooms here usually start at around $140 USD per night.

If DoubleTree is fully booked, The Cabins at East Austin Hotel are another fun option if you want something with more personality. You can opt for rooms with shared bathrooms to save money, and you still enjoy access to the hotel’s pool and restaurants, all in a super central East Austin location!

South Congress (SoCo) 

BEST FOR A TRENDY BUT RELAXED STAY

• Stylish, walkable area with boutiques, murals, and restaurants
• More relaxed than Downtown but still close to the action

Cons

• Hotels can be pricey in the best locations
• You’ll likely need Uber or a car for wider sightseeing

South Congress, or SoCo, is one of Austin’s most iconic areas to stay. This is where the cool kids hang out! It’s colorful and creative, with personality in spades. We love spending time here because it offers great food, lots of live music, and lots of quirky independent shops that are really fun to browse.

The main stretch along South Congress Avenue is where you’ll find the action. There are local boutiques, vintage stores, coffee shops, and plenty of restaurants, so it’s a great place to spend an afternoon wandering around. This is also where you’ll find some of Austin’s most famous photo spots, including the “I love you so much” mural, which is basically a rite of passage at this point!

What we like about SoCo is that it feels stylish without being as hectic as Downtown. You’re still only a short ride from the city center, but the area itself has a more relaxed, artsy feel. It’s perfect if you want somewhere with lots to do, but don’t necessarily want nightlife right outside your hotel. It’s a fun and trendy base, and we’d be lying if we said we haven’t dreamt about moving here! 

Austin Marriott South – $$$

Austin Marriott South is a polished, full-service hotel within a short drive of South Congress. It’s not right on the main SoCo strip, but it’s worth the trade-off if you have a car or don’t mind using Uber to get around.

The hotel has a classic Marriott feel, with spacious rooms, a restaurant, and a fitness center, which is always a nice bonus. It’s not the most boutique or “Austin” hotel on this list, but it’s comfortable, and it makes a solid pick if you want a more traditional stay with good amenities.

It also offers easy access to South Congress, Downtown, and the airport. Rooms here usually start at around $180 USD per night.

If Austin Marriott South is fully booked, Sonesta Simply Suites Austin South is another practical option nearby with easy access to South Congress by car. It offers apartment-style rooms with kitchens, which is handy if you’re staying a bit longer or want to self-cater.

Staybridge Suites Austin South Interstate – $$ 

Staybridge Suites Austin South Interstate is a great option if you want more space and good value near South Congress. Like the Marriott, it’s set a short drive from the main SoCo area, so you won’t be right in the middle of the action, but you’ll have easy access by car or Uber.

The setup here is apartment-style, which we love for longer stays. Rooms come with kitchens, sitting areas, and plenty of space to spread out, so it feels more comfortable than a standard hotel room. Breakfast is included, and there’s also a pool and fitness center on site.

It’s more practical than trendy, but if you want comfort and value for money, it’s a very strong choice. Rooms here usually start at around $145 USD per night.

If Staybridge Suites is booked up, Aloft Austin South is another great option nearby, but it’s more funky and colorful, with a fun lobby bar. It’s also just a couple of minutes’ drive to SoCo, and it offers free parking on-site, so it’s a great choice if you’re renting a car.

TownePlace Suites Austin South – $ 

TownePlace Suites Austin South is a solid budget-friendly option if you want something clean, modern, and practical near SoCo. Like many hotels in this part of Austin, it’s not right on South Congress Avenue itself, but it’s a short drive away and works well if you’re planning to Uber or rent a car.

The rooms here are simple but really useful, with kitchenettes, workspaces, and enough room to feel comfortable for a few nights. Breakfast is included too, which helps keep costs down, and there’s a fitness center if you want to stay active during your trip. It’s not a flashy stay, but it’s reliable and good value for the area. Rooms here usually start at around $130 USD per night.

If TownePlace Suites is fully booked, Holiday Inn Express & Suites Austin South by IHG is another good budget-friendly option nearby. It offers clean rooms, free breakfast, and a pool, making it an easy, no-fuss base for exploring South Austin.

Rainey Street 

BEST FOR NIGHTLIFE

Pros

• Fun nightlife scene with unique bungalow-style bars
• Close to Lady Bird Lake and within walking distance of Downtown

Cons

• Can be noisy at night
• Not the best fit if you want a calm, low-key stay

Rainey Street is one of the most fun places to stay in Austin if nightlife is high on your priority list! This area is famous for its old bungalow-style houses that have been transformed into bars, patios, and cocktail spots, which gives it a really unique feel compared to your typical nightlife district. That’s the Austin difference! 

We think Rainey Street is especially good if you want somewhere social and lively without being right on Sixth Street. There are tons of places to grab drinks, listen to music, and hang out outdoors, so it’s a great choice for groups and anyone who wants Austin’s nightlife right on their doorstep.

The location is also a big bonus. You’re just southeast of Downtown, so you can still walk to lots of central attractions. Lady Bird Lake is close by, too, which is perfect if you want to balance your nights out with a morning walk, bike ride, or paddleboarding session.

That said, this is definitely not the quietest area. But if you want a fun, energetic stay with plenty going on, Rainey Street is a brilliant choice!

Hotel Van Zandt – $$$

Hotel Van Zandt is one of the best places to stay near Rainey Street if you want something stylish, social, and just a little bit fancy. It’s located right by the action, so you can easily walk to Rainey Street’s famous bungalow bars, as well as Lady Bird Lake and Downtown.

The hotel has a cool, music-inspired feel that fits Austin perfectly. Rooms are sleek and comfortable, and there’s a gorgeous rooftop pool with city views, which is a huge highlight. There’s also a great restaurant and bar on site, so you don’t have to go far for a fun night out.

It’s definitely a splurge, but if you want nightlife on your doorstep with a polished hotel experience, this is a fantastic pick. Rooms here usually start at around $350 USD per night.

If Hotel Van Zandt is fully booked, ROOST Rainey is another excellent option right in the area, perfect for bar-hopping and Lady Bird Lake. It’s a new property with a fresh, apartment-style setup with modern interiors, full kitchens, and more space than a standard hotel room.

Cambria Hotel Austin Downtown – $$

Cambria Hotel Austin Downtown is a great mid-range option if you want to stay close to Rainey Street without paying full luxury prices. It’s located right near the entertainment district, so you can walk to the bars and restaurants, but you’re also close to Lady Bird Lake and Downtown.

The hotel feels modern and fresh, with bright rooms and a stylish setup that works well for a city break. There’s also a rooftop pool and bar, which is perfect for pre-drinks before heading out, or for recovering the next day!

We think it’s a great choice if you want comfort, convenience, and a fun location without going all-out on price. Rooms here usually start at around $220 USD per night.

If Cambria Hotel is booked up, Fairfield Inn & Suites Austin Downtown is another solid option nearby, close to Rainey Street and the convention center. It has clean, modern rooms, free breakfast, and a pool, which makes it an excellent base for a short stay. 

Homewood Suites by Hilton Austin Downtown – $

Homewood Suites by Hilton Austin Downtown is a great budget-friendly option for staying near Rainey Street, especially if you want a bit more space. It’s just a short walk from the nightlife, so you can enjoy the bars to the fullest without needing to worry about getting home afterward! 

The rooms here are suite-style, with kitchens and separate living areas, which makes it a really practical choice for longer stays or group trips. Breakfast is included too, which helps keep costs down, and there’s also a small pool and fitness center on site.

It’s not the most glamorous hotel in the area, but it’s comfortable, convenient, and great value for the location. Rooms here usually start at around $150 USD per night.

Top Activities to do in Austin

With your Austin stay sorted, it’s time to dive into everything this city does best. Between kayaking at sunset, eating way too many tacos, and discovering the city’s quirky history, these tours ended up being some of the highlights of our trip.

• Explore Austin on an e-bike – Austin is bigger than it looks, so this small-group e-bike tour was the perfect way to see a ton without getting exhausted. Cruising past the Capitol, Sixth Street, and Lady Bird Lake while hearing fun local stories made this one of our favorite ways to explore the city.

• See Austin’s highlights in one tour – Short on time? This sightseeing tour packs Austin’s best spots into one fun experience. Between the Texas State Capitol, South Congress, murals, food trucks, and lively Sixth Street, it’s an easy way to get a real feel for the city.

• Taste your way through Austin – BBQ brisket, breakfast tacos, sliders, cheesecake… this food tour seriously delivered. We loved how it mixed Austin’s food scene with local history, and the secret dish at the end was such a fun surprise.

• Watch the bats from a kayak – Watching thousands of bats fly out from under Congress Avenue Bridge on this sunset tour is such a classic Austin experience. Seeing it from a kayak on Lady Bird Lake made it even cooler, especially with the skyline glowing around us.

• Discover Austin’s haunted side – Austin gets surprisingly spooky after dark, and this ghost tour was such a fun way to experience the city differently. Between haunted hotels, eerie theaters, and creepy stories along Sixth Street, it had just the right mix of history and chills.
