Cancun is one of the biggest and most popular resort destinations in Mexico. Attracting millions of visitors from across the globe every year, the city is renowned for its striking turquoise waters, vibrant nightlife, fascinating coral reefs, and numerous resorts. The area also takes pride in its powdery white-sand beaches, which are among the go-to spots for a beach vacation in the country.
If you’re a nature lover and adventure seeker, you’ll have fun in Cancun! The main activities here are watersports, including diving, snorkeling, jet skiing, scuba diving, and parasailing. The city also has something that golf enthusiasts will love—seven different golf courses. What’s also fascinating about this area is all the archeological sites, such as El Meco, El Rey, Cobá, Tulum, San Miguelito, and Muyil, among others.
The Mexican city is also teeming with a variety of shops, from designer boutiques and flea markets to high-end malls. Some of the region’s best restaurants serving authentic Mexican dishes and international cuisine are located here as well.
So if you’re already sold on Cancun, you’ll need to know where to stay!
Resorts are a great choice because they don’t only come with accommodations, but also restaurants, pools, spas, and many other facilities. Sometimes, it’s nice to stay on a spacious and safe property with everything you need in one place.
Plus, Cancun is known for having some amazing resorts. So let’s get right down to it– what are the best resorts in Cancun and where are they?
Don’t have time to read the full article? If you’re in the mood for a resort where all the details are taken care of, we suggest the Occidental Costa Cancún – All Inclusive which has a stunning beach and super helpful staff. For those who can’t wait to get out and explore Cancun, we recommend staying at the Fiesta Americana Cancun Villas which is in a very central location with tons of things to see and do nearby.
Where are the Best Resorts in Cancun?
Set on an offshore sandbar strip in southeast Mexico is the Cancun Hotel Zone, which is also called the “Zona Hotelera.” This narrow peninsula, which is connected to the mainland at both edges, stretches up to 14 miles (22.5 km) and resembles the shape of the number 7.
The area is split into several sub-districts and hosts almost 100 Cancun resorts with their own private beach, where you can enjoy white, powder-like sand and turquoise waters. Many of those hotels offer all-inclusive deals. It’s also really easy to get to if you’re traveling from the Cancun Airport to the Hotel Zone.
It is important to know that staying at Cancun Hotel Zone requires a hefty amount of money, as it is the most expensive area of Cancun (which is in the top 3 most expensive parts of Mexico). You won’t find any Airbnbs, food trucks, or taxis that offer cheap prices in this area. A local market is nowhere to be found as well.
But, the good news is that the place promises a one-of-a-kind experience with its shopping malls and a variety of excellent restaurants. You can also look forward to exciting nightlife thanks to the lively activities and evening entertainment.
What’s more, there are plenty of water sports you can try out here. You can even visit attractions such as the family-friendly Interactive Aquarium Cancun and the Museum of Underwater Art.
Another thing you need to expect is a large crowd everywhere you look. The place is always teeming with tourists, which makes it challenging to enjoy your time off in serenity.
Given that the Hotel Zone is filled with numerous luxury resorts in Cancun and things to do and see, choosing the right place to stay may give you a tough time.
To help plan your upcoming trip to Cancun, I created this blog so you can familiarize yourself with some of the best hotels. Details such as room rates, amenities, location, and more are all included – so you’ll easily find the right resort for your Cancun getaway!
So, let’s check them out below!

All-Inclusive vs. All-Exclusive Resorts in Cancun
In addition to Cancun’s all-inclusive resorts, the Hotel Zone also houses hotels that offer an all-exclusive getaway. It’s best to first learn the differences between the two before deciding where to make reservations, as each type of hotel may not be for everyone.
An all-inclusive resort includes all of your meals and drinks, whereas an all-exclusive resort is only accommodation. Many people love all-inclusive resorts in Cancun because they pay upfront and then are free to indulge as much as they want without paying a penny more!
With that said, the quality of the food and drinks at all-inclusive resorts isn’t typically the best. It’s more about quantity, not quality. So for that reason, some people prefer all-exclusive resorts where they can choose where to eat every day.
Below is a breakdown of the pros of each to help you figure out whether you want an all-inclusive vacation or not.
Why Choose an All-Inclusive Resort in Cancun?
An all-inclusive hotel can provide you with everything you need during a vacation. In a nutshell, you only need to settle a single payment– so you won’t need to worry about pulling out your wallet after every meal. We found this surprisingly freeing, and it helped us enjoy the moment more.
This is an excellent option if you’re first-time travelers or you want to save yourselves from the stressful preparation for the trip and the organization of activities. This is also a good option if you want to spend your vacation in one place.
Below are the pros of staying at Cancun resorts that offer all-inclusive deals:
- Value for money.
- No bill to pay at the end of your stay (unless there are additional fees for certain products or services).
- Can indulge in food and drinks as much as you want.
- Reservations at restaurants.
- Organized activities by the resort.
- No kids; adults only (some resorts).
- Full service from when you arrive at the resort.
- Make new friends.
- Provided with essentials.
- Room service (some resorts offer this for free.)
- Transportation to and from the airport (only some resorts).
Why Choose an All-Exclusive Resort in Cancun?
Opposite to all-inclusive resorts in Cancun, all-exclusive hotels are a great choice for travelers who want to be in control of how their vacation will turn out. If you’ll be spending most days and meals outside the hotel, this might be the way to go.
Below are the pros of staying at an all-exclusive hotel:
- Can be cheaper, especially if you don’t eat or drink a ton on holiday.
- Flexibility (decide what you want to do, when you want to do it, and how to do it).
- Chance to buy better quality food and drinks; venture off the resort and try other restaurants.
- Freedom to create your own itineraries.
- Chance to experience the rich local culture to the utmost.

It’s situated in Punta Nizuc, the most peaceful area of the Cancun Hotel Zone. The nearest airport is just 10 minutes away by car, while the city center is almost half an hour away.
The resort has 247 rooms ranging from luxury suites to private villas. I really liked how the decor is a modern take on the ancient Mayan style. Amenities differ in room types, but typically include air-conditioning, a Nespresso coffee maker, a flat-screen TV, a minibar, a freestanding soaking tub, a free high-speed internet connection, and a spacious bathroom with a rainfall shower.
Some suites/villas have a balcony, a bathtub, and a living area with a sofa, while others have a dining area. If you love privacy while taking a dip, I highly recommend splurging on a room with a plunge pool! During the peak season, room rates start at $650 USD.
Plenty of amenities fill the entire property, such as two swimming pools, a luxurious spa, a pool bar, a fitness center, and a kids’ club. They also have six restaurants and multiple event spaces onsite.
Nizuc Resort and Spa has the classic water sports like swimming, snorkeling, paddle boarding, and kayaking. However, if you’re into more niche activities, try their sushi making and cigar rolling!
Pros of staying at Nizuc Resort & Spa:
- Outstanding service
- Peaceful surroundings
- Great location
- Luxury amentities
Cons of staying at Nizuc Resort & Spa:
- Food/drinks are expensive

The BEST Things to do while you’re in Cancun
Take a day trip to Isla Mujeres – The island paradise of Isla Mujeres is just a 15-minute ferry ride from Cancun and has beautiful beaches, shopping, and a small-town atmosphere. Ferries to Isla Mujeres cost $540 MXN ($32 USD) for a round trip and depart from 3 locations in Cancun, including the Hotel Zone. If you want to join a guided tour from Cancun to Isla Mujeres, we highly recommend this catamaran sailing tour with a buffet lunch. This 7-hour tour is one of the best Cancun catamaran cruises to Isla Mujeres and is only $69 per person and even includes an open bar. You can enjoy several hours of relaxing on the beach once it anchors up, or use the snorkeling mask and fins on deck to admire the sea life below!
Party! – If you love to party, you won’t want to miss the hottest nightspots in Cancun, including Mandala Cancun, Congo Bar, and La Vaquita. You can also catch the live music, acrobatic show, and awesome atmosphere at Coco Bongo. Secure a seat and skip the line by booking tickets in advance– they even come with 15 drinks!
Go on a food tour – To taste the best tacos in Cancun, consider joining a food tour such as this taco and beer tour! They will pick you up at your hotel and take you to the best taquerias in town, along with an English-speaking guide. Alcoholic drinks and Mariachi music are also included. The tacos have an authentically spicy Mexican flavor and juicy meat, so bring your appetite and prepare those tastebuds.
Swim in cenotes – Cenotes are underground chambers or caves with crystal clear water you can swim in! You can rent a car or book a tour that includes visiting one of the many cenotes near Cancun. In this particular tour, you’ll first see the Tulum archeological site before snorkeling in a reef, exploring a cave and jungle, and swimming in Xtun Cavernas Cenote. It costs $109 USD and lasts around 8 hours.
Visit Chichen Itza – Chichen Itza is the most famous Mayan site in Mexico, a UNESCO world heritage site, AND a World Wonder. The entrance fee is 571 MXN ($30 USD) for adults, and the site is open from 8 am to 5 pm, but I’d recommend booking your tickets in advance as the cap on visitors is 3,000 per day. Getting to Chichen Itza is best done either by renting a car in Mexico or an organized tour. I chose this full-day tour because it had great reviews and included a trip to the beautiful Cenotes Sagrado as well.
