Overview of the Best Areas to Stay in Galveston

Galveston is a long, narrow island rather than a compact beach town, so staying close to your favorite activities can make your days a lot easier.
Once you’re in an area, exploring on foot is pretty straightforward, especially around The Strand and Pleasure Pier. Getting between the main sightseeing spots takes more planning, though, so having a car makes things much easier if you’re hoping to see a bit of everything!
If you’d rather leave the car parked, the Galveston Trolley can also come in handy. Its Seawall route connects Stewart Beach with Moody Gardens, with a transfer to the Downtown loop at 21st Street and Seawall Boulevard. Just make sure to check the current timetable before planning your day around it, as service frequency and operating days vary by season.
Before we get into the details, here’s a quick overview of our four favorite areas and our top hotel pick in each:
- Central Seawall – Best for first-time visitors – Stay here for beachfront hotels, plenty of restaurants, and easy drives to Pleasure Pier and Downtown. Holiday Inn Resort Galveston is our top pick here for its family-friendly facilities and handy central location.
- Pleasure Pier and East Seawall – Best for entertainment and exploring without driving – Choose this area for beach days, amusement rides, bike rentals, and places to eat within easy walking distance. We love Gaido’s Seaside Inn for its large pool, free breakfast, and convenient location next to the famous Gaido’s seafood restaurant.
- Downtown Galveston – Best for history, dining & nightlife – Base yourself here to explore The Strand, Pier 21, museums, and beautiful historic streets, with the cruise terminals nearby. The Tremont House is our favorite hotel here for its historic charm and rooftop bar.
- Moody Gardens and Central Island – Best for families & major attractions – Stay here for easy access to Moody Gardens and Schlitterbahn Waterpark. We recommend Best Western Plus Galveston Suites for its spacious rooms, balconies, and handy location for family days out.
Important Tip
Multiple Galveston trips have taught us that this city doesn’t reward spontaneity when it comes to planning. The good places get snapped up months in advance, leaving the overpriced and underwhelming options for last-minute travelers.
The sweet spot for booking Galveston accommodations is 3-4 months out—enough time to secure good rates but not so far ahead that you’re locking in plans excessively early.
Where to Stay in Galveston
Central Seawall

BEST FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS
Pros
- Widest choice of beach hotels, restaurants, and everyday conveniences.
- Pleasure Pier, Moody Gardens, Downtown, and the cruise terminals are all a short drive away.
- The area suits several travel styles, including family vacations, convention trips, and quick beach weekends.
Cons
- You usually need to cross busy Seawall Boulevard to reach the beach.
- Streets can get congested on summer weekends and during major events.
- It lacks the historic architecture and walkable evening atmosphere found Downtown.
If this is your very first time in Galveston, we definitely recommend looking at Central Seawall. It’s a handy all-around base, especially if you’re hoping to fit beach time, sightseeing, and family attractions into the same trip!
A perfect day here might look like spending the morning by the water, popping back to your hotel to freshen up, and then heading out for an early dinner without making a big outing of it. The 61st Street Fishing Pier and Galveston Island Convention Center are also nearby, making this area convenient for fishing trips and events.
When you’re ready to explore farther afield, Moody Gardens and Schlitterbahn are a short drive inland, while Pleasure Pier and Downtown are farther east. That variety is especially handy when you’re traveling with kids and want to mix beach days with other adventures.
The main trade-off is the setting. Central Seawall feels more modern and commercial than Downtown, so you won’t find the same charming historic streets here. Most hotels also sit across busy Seawall Boulevard from the sand, and traffic can get heavy on summer weekends.
Still, for a first visit with a little bit of everything on the itinerary, we think Central Seawall is hard to beat!
The San Luis Resort Spa & Conference Center – $$$

For our luxury pick along the Seawall, we absolutely love The San Luis Resort Spa & Conference Center!
The massive outdoor pool is a definite highlight here, especially with a swim-up bar for those lazy vacation afternoons! The resort also has a spa, several onsite restaurants, tennis courts, a fitness center, and a children’s pool, so everyone has plenty to enjoy between outings.
Location-wise, the beach is directly across Seawall Boulevard, and the Galveston Island Convention Center is just down the road. It’s a handy choice for an event, but we think it’s equally tempting for a seaside splurge!
As for pricing, you can expect rates around $300 to $500+ USD per night, with summer and holiday stays typically costing more.
Another nearby option we love is Hilton Galveston Island Resort. With a Gulf-facing pool, swim-up bar, and easy access to the beach and convention center, it’s a handy alternative if The San Luis is all booked up.
Holiday Inn Resort Galveston – $$

For our mid-range pick in Central Seawall, we always recommend Holiday Inn Resort Galveston. This hotel is ideal for families, with an outdoor pool, a separate children’s pool, and an arcade to keep the kids entertained between beach outings. They also offer organized activities during busier periods!
We love that most rooms have a balcony with at least a partial Gulf view. You’ll also have a mini-fridge and microwave to keep drinks cold and heat up snacks, plus an on-site restaurant for evenings when you’d rather stay close to your room. The beach is directly across the road, so you won’t have far to go for some time on the sand.
As for pricing, you can expect nightly rates starting around $120 to $350+ USD depending on the room and season.
If you’d like a little more space to spread out, we’d also check out Home2 Suites Galveston. The kitchenettes are super handy for families and longer stays, and the beach is just a short walk away!
Baymont by Wyndham Galveston – $

For our budget-friendly pick, you can’t go wrong with Baymont by Wyndham Galveston. The beach is only a few minutes away on foot, and free parking is a welcome perk if you’re driving around the island!
The rooms here are simple but comfortable, with a microwave and mini-fridge for heating up leftovers and keeping beach snacks on hand. Breakfast is included, too, so that’s one less thing to budget for each morning. There’s also a seasonal outdoor pool, a fitness room, and laundry facilities, which are especially useful on longer trips.
You won’t find the resort-style extras of our pricier picks, but if you’re planning to spend most of your time out exploring, we think this hotel fits the bill perfectly. As for pricing, rates often start around $60 to $200+ USD per night, leaving more room in your budget for activities and meals out!
If Baymont is all booked up on your preferred dates, we’d also check out La Quinta Inn & Suites. Its location near the 61st Street Fishing Pier makes it a super convenient base for spending time along the waterfront.
Another budget-friendly option we like to recommend is Hampton Inn & Suites Galveston, located right on Central City Boulevard. With free breakfast, a fridge in every room, and an outdoor pool, it’s an easy pick if you want a few extras without stretching your budget.
Pleasure Pier / East Seawall

BEST FOR ENTERTAINMENT & EXPLORING WITHOUT DRIVING
Pros
- Pleasure Pier, the beach, restaurants, and bike rentals are all within walking distance.
- The area has a lively vacation atmosphere that suits families and short weekend trips.
- Several standout historic and boutique hotels line this stretch.
Cons
- Crowds and traffic peak on summer weekends and during school breaks.
- Noise from Seawall Boulevard and Pleasure Pier can carry into nearby rooms.
- Most hotels are separated from the sand by the boulevard, so you’ll have to cross the road.
If your ideal Galveston trip includes beach days, amusement rides, and plenty of ice cream stops, you’ll love staying near Pleasure Pier!
The main attraction is Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, where rides and games stretch out over the Gulf. We love that you can spend a few hours on the beach, head back to your hotel for a break, and then wander over to the pier for an evening of entertainment. Seafood restaurants, bike rentals, and places to grab a sweet treat keep you busy nearby, too.
Your hotel’s location makes a difference here, so we recommend checking how far it is from the pier before booking. Staying close means you can walk to meals and evening outings, although you’ll still want transportation for trips to Moody Gardens or other parts of the island. For a stay with a little extra character, this stretch also has historic hotels such as Grand Galvez.
The main drawback is how busy it gets. Summer weekends and school breaks bring crowds, and nearby rooms can pick up noise from traffic and the pier. Most hotels also require crossing Seawall Boulevard to reach the sand.
That said, if you enjoy a lively setting and having plenty to do nearby, this area is a fantastic choice!
Grand Galvez Resort, Autograph Collection – $$$

For a luxury stay with a ton of charm, we absolutely love Grand Galvez Resort! This Galveston landmark has welcomed guests since 1911, and its grand lobby and beautifully manicured grounds make arrival feel like a special occasion.
The heated saline pool is another highlight, with a swim-up bar for those afternoons when sightseeing can wait! The property also offers a hot tub, spa, and fitness center, plus an on-site bar and restaurant.
When you’re ready to head out, you can borrow a bicycle to explore the Seawall or walk to Pleasure Pier, which is around half a mile (800 meters) away. The Strand is also a short drive inland, so you can easily mix beach time with exploring Galveston’s historic streets.
As for pricing, you can expect rates around $190 to $400+ USD per night. Parking and other fees can add to the total, but for a special occasion, this hotel would definitely be high on our shortlist!
Gaido’s Seaside Inn – $$

For our mid-range option (and top pick for the Pleasure Pier / East Seawall area), it’s Gaido’s Seaside Inn.
This family-owned property sits directly across from the beach, with the iconic Gaido’s Seafood Restaurant next door, so dinner is easy after a day in the sun! Back at the hotel, we love the huge outdoor pool, separate children’s pool, and hot tub for a little downtime between outings. Breakfast and parking are included, too, which is always a plus in our book.
The rooms have a traditional motel-style feel, but we think that’s part of the charm! As for pricing, rates usually start around $60 USD per night on quieter dates, although weekends and summer stays can climb above $150+.
For something a little more stylish near Porretto Beach, we’d check out Hotel Lucine. You can cool off in the courtyard pool, enjoy dinner on-site, and finish the evening with a drink overlooking the Gulf from the rooftop bar!
Holiday Inn Express & Suites – $

Honestly, you just can’t beat a stay at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Galveston Beach with its modern rooms, free breakfast, and decent-sized outdoor pool. For this Holiday Inn specifically, we also love that many of the rooms have balconies and views of the Gulf!
Location-wise, Pleasure Pier is only around a 12-minute walk away, so getting to the rides couldn’t be easier. And if you’re combining your visit with a cruise, the terminals are a short drive from the hotel, too.
When it comes to pricing, you can expect rates to start around $90 to $120+ USD per night on quieter dates, with holidays and summer weekends often rising to $200+ USD.
Another affordable option worth checking out is the Seabreeze Hotel. It’s just 400 meters (0.25 miles) from Pleasure Pier, and every room has a fridge for keeping drinks and beach snacks cold.

Booking.com is a trusted online booking platform for hotels, guesthouses, apartments, and boutique stays around the world. We’ve been using Booking.com to reserve our accommodations for over a decade, and we keep coming back for a few key reasons:
Downtown Galveston

BEST FOR HISTORY, DINING AND NIGHTLIFE
Pros
- The Strand, Pier 21, museums, restaurants, and nightlife are clustered within a walkable district.
- It has the island’s richest historic atmosphere and most distinctive architecture.
- The cruise terminals are close, making pre- and post-cruise stays simple.
Cons
- The beach and major family attractions require a drive or rideshare.
- Weekend nightlife and cruise-day traffic can make the area noisy and busy.
- Hotels often rely on valet, paid lots, or limited street parking.
If beautiful old buildings, cute shops, and dinner spots are high on your wish list, you’ll definitely want to consider staying in Downtown Galveston!
Much of the action centers on The Strand, where beautiful 19th-century buildings now house restaurants, galleries, shops, and cocktail bars. History fans will have plenty to explore, too. The Galveston Railroad Museum and the Grand 1894 Opera House are nearby, while Pier 21 adds harbor views, museums, and dolphin cruises.
Downtown Galveston is also a handy base if you’re spending a night or two on the island before or after a cruise. Just make sure to check which terminal your ship uses before planning how to get there, and compare hotel shuttle and parking packages to see what works best for your trip.
The main downside to staying Downtown is beach access. Downtown Galveston is set along the harbor rather than the beachfront, so you’ll have to plan on driving or taking a rideshare for beach days and trips to Pleasure Pier or Moody Gardens. Parking can also get expensive in this area, and weekend nightlife can make rooms near the bars a little noisy.
Still, if historic surroundings, dinners out, and lively evenings sound like your kind of trip, we think you’ll absolutely love staying downtown!
The George Manor – $$$

For our top luxury pick in Downtown, we just can’t get enough of The George Manor. This property is located in Galveston’s East End Historic District, and it feels more like an elegant private home than a hotel.
We love that you can linger over a generous breakfast spread before heading out for the day. And with a dining room and bar on-site, you’ll have a tempting option for dinner and drinks, too!
Location-wise, The Strand is around 0.6 miles (1 kilometer) away, so you’ll be close to the shops and restaurants while staying on a quieter residential street. The port is nearby, too, and cruise transfers can also be arranged.
You can expect rooms here to generally range from around $200 to 350+ USD per night, which is well worth it for such a gorgeous stay.
If The George Manor is fully booked, The Pink Room is another lovely option worth checking out. The rooms are so cute, and the hotel is conveniently located for exploring Downtown.
The Tremont House, Galveston, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel – $$

Next up is The Tremont House, a gorgeous historic property just off The Strand.
We absolutely love the high ceilings and exposed brick throughout this property, and the rooftop bar has some of the best views of the city! There’s also a fitness center and valet parking, plus pet-friendly rooms if your four-legged travel buddy is traveling with you.
Best of all, you’ll be close to The Grand 1894 Opera House and plenty of Downtown’s shops and restaurants, making it easy to explore downtown Galveston on foot.
Rates for this hotel typically range from $150 to $300+ USD per night, which is very reasonable for such a stylish, central stay. Just keep in mind that valet parking costs extra if you’re bringing a car.
Another mid-range hotel we love Downtown is Harbor House Hotel and Marina. This hotel is also near The Strand, and some of the rooms here have some seriously incredible harbor views!
Lotus Galveston – $

For a simple, budget-friendly stay Downtown, we like to recommend Lotus Galveston. This is an adults-only boutique guesthouse, and in our opinion, it’s perfect for couples or solo travelers who’d rather save their budget for meals out and adventures around Galveston!
The rooms here are compact but have all the essentials. Shared kitchen facilities are also available, which are handy for making a quick snack before heading out.
Location-wise, The Grand 1894 Opera House is about a five-minute walk away, while The Strand is roughly half a mile (800 meters) from the property. You’ll also be a short rideshare trip away from the cruise terminal.
Basic rooms start around $50 USD per night, with other options reaching upwards of $100+ USD. There’s no pool or included breakfast, but overall, it’s a fantastic base if you’re planning on spending most of your time exploring.
Moody Gardens and Central Island

BEST FOR FAMILIES & MAJOR ATTRACTIONS
Pros
- Moody Gardens and Schlitterbahn are minutes away.
- Hotels often have larger pools, easier parking, and facilities designed for families.
- The atmosphere is quieter than Pleasure Pier and the busiest parts of the Seawall.
Cons
- A car is needed for most meals, beach outings, and trips Downtown.
- There are fewer restaurants, bars, and shops within walking distance.
- The Strand, cruise terminals, and East End sights are farther away.
If your Galveston plans revolve around family attractions, we definitely recommend looking at Moody Gardens and Central Island. Staying nearby means less time driving back and forth, leaving more of the day for the activities everyone’s excited about!
Moody Gardens and Schlitterbahn are the biggest draws here, so this area works especially well if you’re planning repeat visits or full days at either attraction. We also love being able to head back to the hotel for a break when the kids need some downtime. A swim and a little rest can make all the difference before heading out again!
The hotels are more spread out here than around Pleasure Pier, and many offer pools, convenient parking, and space for families to settle in. Some properties sit closer to the western Seawall, so you can still work beach time into your vacation. Just check the hotel’s exact location, as staying near the attractions doesn’t always mean you’ll be near the beach.
The main downside to staying in this area is that you’ll rely more on your car. Restaurants and shops are spread out, and Downtown is several miles east, so dinner and evening outings take a little more planning.
However, if you’re happy driving and want a calmer base close to the family attractions, this area is well worth considering!
Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa and Convention Center – $$$

For our top luxury pick near Moody Gardens, we can’t recommend Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa and Convention Center enough! Staying within the attraction complex puts you close to the aquarium and rainforest pyramids, discovery museum, and seasonal Palm Beach water area, making family days out that much easier.
There’s plenty to enjoy back at the hotel, too, including a large tropical outdoor pool, indoor lap pool, hot tub, spa, and fitness center. You’ll also have several on-site restaurants to choose from, so you won’t have to pile everyone into the car for dinner!
Rates typically start around $150 USD per night, climbing to $350+ during events and school holidays.
Best Western Plus Galveston Suites – $$

Best Western Plus Galveston Suites sits along the western Seawall, and most suites have a balcony with at least a partial ocean view, which is such a nice perk! Hot breakfast is also included, and there’s an outdoor pool, hot tub, and fitness center to enjoy during your stay.
Location-wise, Moody Gardens and Schlitterbahn are both a short drive away, making this a convenient base for visiting the family attractions. Downtown is farther away, though, with The Strand roughly 4 to 5 miles (6.4 to 8 kilometers) east.
Rates typically range from $85 to $250+ USD per night, which is very reasonable for a spacious suite with a sea view!
Another mid-range option we like to recommend on the western Seawall is Courtyard by Marriott Galveston Island. We love this hotel because it has a resort-style pool with cabanas, plus an on-site bistro!
Holiday Inn Express & Suites – $

For a budget-friendly base near Galveston’s family attractions, we recommend Holiday Inn Express & Suites Galveston West-Seawall. This hotel sits along the western Seawall, with Moody Gardens nearby and a choice of rooms and suites, including options overlooking the Gulf!
We especially love that hot breakfast and parking are included, and there’s also a seasonal outdoor pool and fitness center, plus self-service laundry facilities if your beach clothes need a refresh.
As for pricing, you can expect rooms to range from a very reasonable $70 to $150 USD per night, depending on the season and room type.
Another budget-friendly option worth checking out is Days Inn & Suites by Wyndham. It’s just steps away from the Seawall Urban Park, and every room has a mini fridge and microwave!

The Best Things to Do in Galveston

Galveston’s beaches could easily fill your vacation, but we definitely recommend making time for the island’s history and wildlife, too! If you’re still planning your itinerary, here are four of our favorite ways to explore:
- Look for dolphins in Galveston Harbor – Head out on the water with this 45-minute dolphin tour. You’ll cruise through the harbor while keeping an eye out for dolphins and hearing stories about Galveston’s maritime history. We love this option for a short outing between sightseeing stops around Pier 21
- Hear the island’s haunted stories – For a little spooky sightseeing, join the Historic Galveston Ghost Tour. This guided walk takes you past historic landmarks while sharing the haunted tales connected to them. You’ll stay outside the buildings, but there are plenty of stories to keep your imagination busy!
- Explore Galveston by e-bike – If you’d rather sightsee on two wheels, this private e-bike adventure is a fun way to see historic homes, the Seawall, and other island landmarks. Bikes and helmets are included, and the electric assistance makes covering more ground a little easier. It’s a great choice if you enjoy being outdoors but fancy a break from walking!
- Roll through the island’s history – Try something a little different with this history Segway tour. You’ll follow a guide between landmarks, picking up local history along the way. There’s a safety briefing before setting off, so don’t worry if it’s your first time on a Segway!

An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of buying a little plastic chip and swapping it into your phone, you just download it. It connects your phone to a local network in whatever country you’re visiting — no stores, no waiting, and no fiddling with tiny cards.
In simple terms, it’s the easiest way to get data and stay connected while traveling.
We’ve tested a bunch of eSIMs over the years, and after a few frustrating experiences, we’ve found our favorite — Airalo. It’s fast, reliable, and incredibly easy to use. You can set it up in minutes (even my mom managed it solo on her first try!), and the prices are some of the best out there.
