We’ve explored a few luaus across Hawaii over the years, and while Kona has a smaller selection than places like Oahu, the experiences here do feel a bit more relaxed and authentic. In this guide, we’ll walk you through our top picks and what to expect, so that you can decide which luau is best for you. 

Why Attend a Luau in Kona?

A luau is a classic part of Hawaiian culture, so experiencing one while you’re in Kona is something that we highly recommend! It’s a great way to learn about Hawaii’s history through music and dancing, from traditional hula to high-energy fire performances. At many luaus, you’ll also get the chance to watch or take part in cultural activities like headband weaving or traditional cooking, which adds a fun, hands-on element to the night.

And we can’t forget about the food! Dinner is usually served buffet-style, so you can try a bit of everything and go back for your favorites. You’ll almost always find Hawaiian staples like kalua pork, poi, and grilled pineapple, along with chicken and fish dishes. Then, dessert is usually a coconut or pineapple-based affair to finish things off on a sweet note.

Luaus are always so much fun – I mean, who doesn’t love great food and great performances? Attending a luau is especially worth doing if it’s your first time in Hawaii, but we’ve been to several, and they’re always a blast.

3 Best Hawaiian Luaus In Kona

1. Voyagers of the Pacific Luau

We’ve been to a few luaus across Hawaii, and this one at the Royal Kona Resort is easily our top pick in Kona. It just gets everything right, from the setting to the food and the atmosphere, so it ended up being one of our favorite evenings of the whole trip!

The location is a big part of what makes this one so special. It’s set right on the edge of Kailua Bay in Kona, and the views as the sun goes down are incredible. This is the kind of thing we came to Hawaii for in the first place! Plus, this luau is available Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, which also makes it a bit easier to fit into your itinerary compared to some of the other options.

The food was another highlight. It was a buffet with plenty of Hawaiian staples, so we got to try a bit of everything and then go back for our favorites – mine was the lomi lomi salmon! Everything we had was fresh and flavorful, and there was more than enough variety to keep everyone happy.

And the performance itself was sensational! It weaved together stories, music, and dances from across Polynesia. It was so engaging, and our jaws were on the floor when it was time for the fire knife finale. If you’re only going to do one luau in Kona, this is the one we’d recommend!

2. Island Breeze Luau 

If you’re looking for a luau that really brings together a bit of everything, this oceanfront luau is a great option. The Island Breeze Luau has been around for years, and we can see why it’s so popular! It’s located right by Kamakahonu Bay, which gives it a beautiful oceanfront setting with views of the water and even Hualālai in the distance.

One thing that really stands out about this luau is how much variety there is throughout the evening. The stories told take you across Polynesia, with high-energy dances from Fiji and New Zealand to traditional Hawaiian hula. This one really does have it all! We love how it keeps things interesting the whole way through and gives you a broader look at different cultures, rather than focusing on just one.

There’s also a fun sense of occasion here. The royal procession, where King Kamehameha arrives by canoe, is a really memorable moment and adds something a bit different compared to other luaus! It felt a bit more theatrical in a good way, without losing that cultural focus.

The food is another highlight. There’s a large buffet with plenty of choices, so you can try lots of different Hawaiian dishes and figure out your favorites. The drinks are included too, which makes it easy to relax and enjoy the evening without thinking about anything else. This luau is available on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday, and since it’s located right in Kona, it’s super convenient if you’re staying nearby.

3. Hawai‘iloa Lū‘au

While this luau isn’t technically in Kona, it’s a straightforward 40-minute drive, and we think it’s worth making the top three list. The Hawai‘iloa Lū‘au takes place in Waikoloa, and it’s available on Wednesday and Saturday, so it can fit nicely into your itinerary if the Kona-based luaus don’t line up with your dates!

One of the standout things here is the setting. It’s held at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott, right by the ocean, and the whole evening has a relaxed, open feel with plenty of space to move around. It’s also a great pick if you’re traveling with family, as there’s a large grassy area and a more laid-back atmosphere that makes it easy for kids to enjoy the experience too.

The evening focuses on the story of Hawai‘i Loa and the discovery of the Hawaiian Islands, which gives it a slightly different angle compared to other luaus. We like that it really leans into storytelling, with traditional music and dance helping to bring that history to life in a fun and exciting way.

Food-wise, you’ve got a generous buffet with lots of delicious options, including kalua pork and fresh seafood – yum! Drinks are included as well, which of course makes the whole night even better! 

Overall, we think this is a great option if you’re looking for a well-rounded luau. It’s a great choice for families, and we love the beautiful setting away from the busier Kona area.

When should I book my luau?

We usually recommend booking your luau around 4-6 weeks in advance to make sure you get the date and package you want! Many luaus offer different options, so booking earlier gives you a bit more choice.

For our last trip, we booked about two months ahead. There were still a few last-minute spots available closer to the date, but the better options were definitely more limited.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that luaus in Kona don’t run every day. Each one operates on specific days of the week, so it’s important to check availability and plan for it early. 

Do luaus include transportation?

Most luaus in Kona don’t include transportation, but that’s usually not a problem! Since most visitors stay in this area, getting to your luau is typically quick and easy.

There are also a couple of great options up in Waikoloa, which is about a 40-minute drive north of Kona. If you’re staying in that area, you’ll have a luau nearby, and if not, it’s still a pretty straightforward drive.

Where are the luaus usually located?

Luckily, some of the best luaus on the Big Island are located right here in Kona, with a couple of great options up in the Waikoloa area as well. These luaus are typically smaller and set right along the coast, which gives them that beachfront vacation feel! You won’t find many in Hilo, so if you’re staying there for a few days, plan to attend a luau while you’re in Kona.

While some islands are known for larger, more theatrical luaus, they’re a bit more low-key on Big Island. The oceanfront setting does a lot of the talking, which we love! These luaus feel more intimate and a bit more connected to the surroundings, which really adds to the experience.

Should you go to a luau in Kona?

Yes, for sure! It’s a more expensive activity, though, which is why it’s important to do your research and pick a quality one. The luaus we’ve talked about in this blog are all highly rated, and they include fantastic food and an amazing performance. It’s such a fun way to spend an evening, and a must-do Hawaii experience as far as we’re concerned!

Kona isn’t the kind of place where you do just one activity and call it a day! These tours gave us some of our favorite memories, from epic snorkeling spots to once-in-a-lifetime nighttime experiences. Just be sure to book ahead—these fill up fast!

Dolphin sightings are common on the ride out, and the calm conditions make it one of the best places to get in the water on the island.
