After all, a luau is a traditional feast involving food, music, and hula dancing, so it’s a super fun way to spend an afternoon or evening here! But not all luaus are created equal, and picking the right one can make a big difference to your overall experience.

We’ve been to a fair few luaus in Maui over the years, and some have really stood out to us! In this guide, we’ll share our top picks and what to expect to help you decide which luau is right for your trip.

Why Attend a Luau in Maui? 

A luau is a quintessential part of Hawaiian culture, so experiencing one of these iconic celebrations is a must-do while you’re in Maui! In fact, Maui is known for its authentic luau experiences, so as far as we’re concerned, it’s the best place in Hawaii to attend one. 

One of our favorite things about luaus in Maui is that they’re often set right by the beach. Perhaps for this very reason, we’ve also found that the performances here tend to feel a bit less staged. The focus is more on authentic Hawaiian traditions than big production value – I mean, when you’ve got an ocean backdrop, you don’t really need all of the bells and whistles! 

But attending a luau isn’t just about the performance. It’s an awesome way to learn about Hawaii’s history through impressive demonstrations, from hula dancing to high-energy fire displays. We’ve also had the chance to try things like headband weaving and watch traditional cooking demonstrations before dinner, which adds an interactive element to the whole experience. 

And then there’s the food. Dinner is usually served buffet-style, so you can try a bit of everything and go back for your favorites. You’ll almost always find kalua pork, poi, and grilled pineapple, along with chicken and fish dishes. And don’t skip dessert, because there’s usually something coconut or pineapple-based to finish things off – yum!

1. Te Au Moana Luau 

We’ve been to a few luaus in Hawaii over the years, and this one in Wailea is easily our top pick in Maui! It’s a step above the rest in many ways, and we thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. The venue itself is beautiful, with a big open outdoor space right by the beach, and we were immediately impressed by the setting. 

The food here was a real standout, too. Instead of the usual buffet, this is a three-course, family-style meal, which makes the whole experience feel more personal and high-end. It also ended up being a really nice way to chat with the people at our table. And to be honest, I just appreciated being able to try a bit of everything without constantly getting up! 

As for the performance, it totally blew us away. The MC was great and kept the energy high throughout, while still giving some really interesting historical context along the way. The storytelling was so powerful, and the traditional music and dancing brought Polynesian history to life in a way that felt really authentic and meaningful. The dancers were seriously impressive, and the fire knife finale at the end really cemented this luau as our favorite one in Maui – you just have to go and see it for yourself!

As far as we’re concerned, this is the one to beat. It’s located in Wailea in South Maui, and while parking can be a bit expensive, we just grabbed an Uber, which made things super easy. 2. Gilligan’s Island Luau

If you’re looking for a luau that feels a bit more relaxed and personal, this one in Kihei is a great option! One of the biggest things that sets Gilligan’s Island Luau apart is its size. It’s much smaller than many of the other luaus on Maui, which makes the whole experience feel more intimate and easygoing.

Another thing we really like about this luau is the focus on different Polynesian cultures. In addition to featuring Hawaiian traditions, the performances also highlight stories and dances from places like New Zealand and Tahiti. It adds more variety to the evening and gives you a broader look at Polynesian history through music, storytelling, and some seriously impressive dancing.

The setting is simple, but we like that, because it matches the kind of authentic, stripped-back experience they’re going for. It doesn’t have the same big resort backdrop as some other luaus, but that’s the whole point! It’s located in Kihei in South Maui, and parking here is definitely more affordable than it is at big resort luaus.

You’ll also get a buffet-style dinner with plenty of Hawaiian favorites, plus drinks included, so everything is taken care of for the evening. The staff is super friendly and welcoming, too. If you like the idea of a smaller crowd and a more authentic cultural experience, Gilligan’s Island luau definitely fits the bill! 

3. Wailele Luau 

If you’re staying in North Maui, this Wailele Luau is one of the most convenient and well-rounded luaus you can book. It takes place right on Kā‘anapali Beach in Lahaina, and the oceanfront setting really delivers that classic Hawaii evening you’re probably picturing! It’s held at the Westin, so the whole setup feels polished and well-organized from start to finish, although again, we suggest taking an Uber to avoid those pesky parking fees.

One thing to note is that this luau isn’t available on Mondays or Saturdays, but we actually found it had better availability than some of the other popular options on the island. So if your dates are a bit tight, this is a great alternative that still delivers a fantastic experience.

The evening kicks off with music and a generous buffet dinner, and there’s plenty of variety here. You’ve got everything from traditional Hawaiian dishes to more familiar options, plus desserts and tropical drinks included.

However, the performance itself is where this luau really shines. It focuses on Hawaiian mythology, telling the story of the demigod Maui through traditional dance, music, and costumes. It feels a bit more theatrical than some of the smaller luaus, but in a good way! 

Everything builds up to a fire knife finale, which, naturally, is a real crowd-pleaser. If you’re looking for a beachfront luau with a strong cultural display and a bit more production value, this one really delivers. When should I book my luau? 

We usually recommend booking your luau around 4-6 weeks in advance to make sure you get the date and location you want. Most luaus offer different packages and tiers, so booking earlier gives you a better chance of securing the best spots.

For our last trip, we actually booked about two months in advance. There were still a few last-minute spots available closer to the date, but the better options were definitely more limited. If you’re traveling during peak seasons or have your heart set on a specific luau, it’s definitely worth locking it in early.

Do luaus include transportation?

Most luaus on Maui don’t include transportation, but to be honest, it’s not usually a big issue. Most travelers stay along the west coast, and the drive from one end to the other is only around 45 minutes. For that reason, it’s pretty easy to just pick a luau close to where you’re staying, whether that’s in North or South Maui. And if you don’t feel like driving, Uber is widely available and makes getting there and back really straightforward.

Where are the luaus usually located?

In Maui, luaus usually take place on the beach! They’re generally smaller affairs than luaus in other parts of Hawaii, but we love that about coming here. We’ve been to huge luaus that could almost fill stadiums, and while they’re impressive in their own right, you really can’t beat an intimate beachfront one! 

If you’re staying in the northern area of Maui, you’ll find options near Lahaina. Meanwhile, South Maui luaus tend to take place near Kihei or Wailea. Most travelers stay in these three main areas anyway, so you shouldn’t have to travel far to find a great luau!

Should you Attend a luau on Maui?

Yes! A luau is a must-do Hawaii experience, and the authentic beachfront performances in Maui are really special.

However, attending a luau is definitely a more expensive activity, which is why it’s so important to book a great one – and that’s exactly why we wrote this post! We explored a historic plantation, sampled Maui Gold pineapples at different stages, and even got to take a whole one home. It’s fun, hands-on, and surprisingly interesting!

• Go whale watching – This whale-watching tour from Lahaina was one of the most magical experiences we had in Maui. The small eco-raft lets you get closer to the whales, and we spotted multiple humpbacks, including a calf, within minutes. It’s an absolute must during whale season!

• Drive the Road to Hana – If you only do one thing in Maui, make it this Road to Hana tour! This was hands-down our favorite experience, with stops at black sand beaches, waterfalls, and local villages. Having a local driver made it stress-free, and the scenery was unreal from start to finish.

• Watch the sunrise at Haleakala – This sunrise tour made seeing Haleakala at dawn completely stress-free. Watching the sky light up above the clouds was unforgettable, and having transport, coffee, and breakfast included made it even better.

• Snorkel Molokini Crater – This snorkeling tour took us to Molokini Crater, where the water clarity is unreal, and the marine life is incredible. We also swam with sea turtles at Turtle Town, which was such a highlight. Everything from gear to meals was included, so it felt super easy.
