How to Spend THREE DAYS in Charlotte, North Carolina: 3-Day Itinerary

Charlotte, AKA the Queen City, is one of those places that often flies under the radar, but once you visit, you’ll wonder why you didn’t come sooner! It delivers on nearly every front, with seriously good restaurants, a thriving arts and culture scene, and plenty of Southern charm to make you feel right at home. 

However, like many cities across the US, it’s quite spread out, so planning a short visit can be a bit overwhelming. That’s why we’ve put together this 3-day itinerary, bringing together all the key highlights so you can really make the most of your trip!  

Ready? Let’s get to it!

Itinerary Overview

Charlotte is one of the South’s most dynamic cities, perfectly blending tradition with modern vibes. It’s pretty big (spanning approximately 300 square miles/775 square kilometers), and we’ve structured this itinerary so you can easily experience three distinct neighborhoods across your three days. 

You’ll start right in the middle of the action in Uptown for your first day, move northeast to the gritty, creative NoDa arts district on your second day, and then finish up in the eclectic Plaza Midwood neighborhood on your third day before returning to Uptown for a fantastic send-off dinner.

We absolutely love structuring a trip to Charlotte this way, because each area really does have its own distinct personality. Rather than just staying in one place, you’ll get to experience a completely different side of the city each day, so you’ll get a much fuller picture of what Charlotte is all about! 

The best part about this itinerary is that it’s completely walkable within each neighborhood. And when it’s time to move between areas, an Uber or the CityLYNX Gold Line light rail is usually the easiest way to get around. You really don’t need a rental car for this trip, though it might be useful if you plan on venturing out to one or two restaurants that sit slightly outside the main neighborhoods.

Before we get to the details of this Charlotte itinerary, here’s a quick look at what you’ll be up to on each day: 

Day 1: Explore the museums and history of Uptown Charlotte, with options for a Segway tour or a historical cart tour.

Day 2: Immerse yourself in the street art, coffee shops, and craft breweries of the NoDa arts district, with an optional guided brewery tour in the evening.

Day 3: Wander through the vibrant Plaza Midwood neighborhood and Independence Park before a luxurious send-off dinner, and if you’re up for something a little spooky, you can also join this ghost walking tour. 

Day 1

Breakfast – Angeline’s 

For your first breakfast, we’re sending you to Angeline’s. This is one of Uptown’s most welcoming morning stops, and it has a gorgeous dining room with patio seating available if the weather’s nice. 

On the menu, you’ll find espresso drinks, house-made pastries, and classic morning dishes with a thoughtful Italian twist. We tried their eggs Benedict and the chef’s omelet, and both were absolutely fantastic!

Reservations are strongly recommended, even at breakfast and on weekends. It’s also worth mentioning that they’re open nice and early on weekdays from 7 am to 10 am for breakfast, and then on weekends from 8 am to 2 pm.

Option 1: Morning – Explore uptown Charlotte on a Segway

Next, it’s time to explore Uptown, and this small-group Segway tour is such a fun way to cover a lot of ground without tiring yourself out early in the day. It’s equal parts sightseeing and novelty, and riding a Segway is way easier than it looks. 

The meeting point is just a 7-minute walk (or 3-minute drive) from Angeline’s, but make sure to arrive 30 to 45 minutes early for the mandatory safety video, helmet fitting, and individual lesson. While the earliest tour technically starts at 9 am, it’s often sold out, so we recommend booking the 11 am option and arriving between 10:15 and 10:30 am.

The experience starts with a quick training session, where you’ll learn how to balance, turn, and stop. Even total beginners will feel comfortable within minutes, making the whole experience smooth and stress-free.

Once you’re rolling, you’ll glide through Uptown with a friendly local guide sharing stories you’d never hear on your own. The 1.5-hour tour covers highlights like the Bechtler Museum’s Firebird sculpture, the Mint Museum, the Harvey B. Gantt Center, The Green, and the charming Fourth Ward. 

If you go for the 2-hour version, you’ll add in spots like Old Settlers’ Cemetery and Bank of America Stadium, which are definitely worth the extra time. Either way, you’ll finish up around 12:30 or 1 pm feeling like you’ve really gotten to know the city.

This tour has built a strong reputation with plenty of five-star reviews, and it’s easy to see why once you’re out there. It’s fun, efficient, and a great way to experience Uptown from a completely different perspective.

Option 2: Morning – See the city in style on a historical cart tour

If you’d rather skip the Segway and keep things even more relaxed, this award-winning golf cart tour is a fantastic alternative. This way, you can sit back, relax, and let someone else handle the route while you cruise between Uptown, historic neighborhoods, and stadiums on every corner.

The meeting point is about a 16-minute walk (or 3-minute drive) from Angeline’s. There are a few different start times, but the earliest 9 am option is pretty tight after breakfast, so we recommend booking the 10:30 am tour instead. It lasts about 90 minutes, wrapping up right around midday.

What really makes this tour stand out is the storytelling. Instead of just pointing out buildings, your guide brings Charlotte to life with stories you’d never pick up on your own. You’ll hear how the city earned its nickname, dive into its 1700s gold mining roots, and even stop by the surprising spot where Elvis once performed. 

Along the way, there are plenty of quirky local tales mixed in, too, like hidden bootlegger houses from Prohibition days and the legend of a mysterious “medicine man” who once roamed the streets. It’s the kind of commentary that keeps things interesting the entire ride and makes the city feel way more memorable.

Along the way, you’ll pass major landmarks like the NASCAR Hall of Fame, Bank of America Stadium, and Truist Field, before rolling into the charming Fourth Ward with its tree-lined streets and historic homes. It’s an easy, enjoyable way to see a lot without overdoing it!

Lunch – Rooster’s Wood-fired Kitchen Uptown 

After your morning tour, you’ll probably have worked up quite an appetite! Rooster’s Wood-fired Kitchen is just a 4-minute walk from the Segway tour and a 7-minute walk from the golf cart tour, making it a super convenient lunch spot. 

The open kitchen here is centered around a wood-fired grill, rotisserie, and imported Italian oven. And for food, you can expect a mix of Spanish, French, and Italian-influenced American dishes with a Southern flair. We tried the wood-fired BBQ half chicken and the shrimp and grits, and both were absolutely incredible! The porcini mushroom pizza is also a massive hit if you’re looking to share something with someone in your group.

It’s a bit of a treat-yourself spot, with mains mostly in the $20 to $40 USD range and sides under $15 USD. Definitely consider making a reservation if you can; this place fills up, especially with groups. They’re open every day from 11 am, perfect timing after your tour! 

Afternoon – Wander through Charlotte at your own pace

There really is a ton of stuff to do in central Charlotte. So after lunch, we’d like you to wander around and explore the things that interest you the most. 

If you love a museum, Charlotte’s three flagship museums sit within easy walking distance of each other along S Tryon St and Levine Ave of the Arts, including: 

• Mint Museum Uptown – If you’re only picking one museum, this is a great place to start. The craft and design collection is especially impressive, and there’s a solid mix of American and contemporary art, too. Just note it’s closed on Mondays, so you may have to choose a different museum depending on how your itinerary falls during the week. 

• Bechtler Museum of Modern Art – This beautifully designed building houses a bold collection of 20th-century masterpieces, including works by Picasso, Giacometti, and Warhol. Just note that it’s closed on Tuesdays, so this is a natural choice if your day one is on a Monday and the Mint Museum is closed. 

• Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts and Culture – Named after Charlotte’s first Black mayor, this museum focuses on African-American art, history, and culture in a way that feels both local and broader in scope. Plan to go in the afternoon (they’re typically open from 12 pm, except Saturdays when they open from 10 am and Mondays when they’re closed).

If museums aren’t really your thing, head to the South End for a bit of a different vibe. This neighborhood is a lot more trendy than Uptown, and it’s easily accessible from Uptown on the CityLYNX light rail from the Convention Center stop. 

Here are a few things you can do once you’re there: 

• South End Rail Trail – Running through Charlotte’s South End, the South End Rail Trail is a former railway turned lively greenway where art, food, and local culture come together. You’ll pass murals, sculptures, and plenty of breweries and cafes, especially along the photogenic stretch between Bland Street and Atherton Mill.

• Atherton Mill and Market – Set inside a beautifully restored 19th-century cotton mill, this small indoor marketplace in South End is a hub for local goods and crafts. Inside, you’ll find a mix of casual food spots, coffee shops, and boutiques that are perfect for a relaxed wander.

• Local breweries and taprooms – South End has the highest concentration of craft breweries in the city. We always recommend Suffolk Punch and Hi-Wire Brewing; both are super welcoming and ideal for a relaxed mid-afternoon stop. 

Whatever you’ve chosen to do, we recommend wrapping things up by around 5 or 6 pm, so you have plenty of time to freshen up back at your hotel before the evening. 

Dinner – Fin & Fino

For dinner, we’re sticking with the Uptown theme and sending you to Fin & Fino. This is a social seafood house on Levine Ave of the Arts, right at the heart of Uptown’s cultural district. Depending on where you’re staying, you may need to hop back on the light rail to get back here. 

The menu here draws on both American and European seafood traditions, and everything is incredibly fresh. On our trip, we tried the oysters and the house-made pasta, and both were seriously so delicious. You can also create custom cocktails here, known as the ‘call of the clam’, which is a super fun touch!

This place does get very busy, so reservations are essential. It’s also worth noting that they close early-ish (9 pm) on most weekdays and 8 pm on Sundays, so we recommend booking a table for no later than 7 pm so you can get the full experience. You have a bit more wiggle room on a Friday or Saturday, as they close at 10 pm. 

Evening – Take in the city from a new angle

After dinner, we have a couple of options for you here, depending on how you’re feeling after a busy first day.

One option is to go for a gentle stroll through Romare Bearden Park, which is just a 3-minute walk from Fin & Fino. It’s a beautiful green space right in the city, and it’s especially lovely when it’s lit up at night.

Another option is to take a quick 2-minute Uber (or a 12-minute walk) from the restaurant to Fahrenheit. This was Charlotte’s first open-air rooftop bar, and it offers some of the most amazing views of the city skyline. For drinks, they offer creative cocktails and local draft beers, as well as a great wine list. 

If you’re considering Fahrenheit, we recommend making a reservation, even if you’re just going for drinks. It’s also worth noting that this spot is a bit more stylish and upscale when it comes to the dress code, so you’ll want to take that into consideration before heading out for dinner. 

Day 2

Breakfast – Local Loaf 

Day two is all about experiencing the NoDa neighborhood, so for breakfast, we’re sending you to Local Loaf. If you’re staying in Uptown, it should only be about a 10-minute Uber ride away. 

Local Loaf has been a cornerstone of the NoDa neighborhood since 2013, known for its fresh, locally sourced ingredients and elevated takes on classic brunch dishes. We tried ‘The Chicken and the Egg’ (their signature dish made from hand-breaded chicken tenders, a poached egg, and homemade chipotle Cheerwine sauce) and the shrimp and grits, and both were phenomenal. Their seasonal muffins and egg-and-cheese bagels are also fantastic if you want something a bit lighter.

The best part about Local Loaf is that the prices are super reasonable, and you can expect most breakfast dishes to fall between $10 to $16 USD. They don’t do reservations here, but you shouldn’t have trouble finding a table. 

Before you plan your visit, know that they’re only open Wednesday through Friday from 8 am to 9 pm, and on weekends from 3 or 4 pm. So if your second day falls on a day they’re closed, we always recommend Smelly Cat Coffeehouse as a strong alternative. 

Morning – Get to know the NoDa arts district

After breakfast, it’s time to explore the NoDa district for yourself on foot! The area was originally a textile mill village in the early 20th century, but today, it has been completely transformed into a hub of art galleries, street murals, independent boutiques, and some of the city’s most celebrated breweries. 

Here are our favorite ways to spend a casual morning in NoDa:

• Photograph the street murals along N Davidson St – This is the main NoDa strip, and it’s lined with some of the city’s most colorful, eye-catching murals. We recommend really taking your time here to look at the murals and snap a few photos! 

• Grab a coffee at Smelly Cat Coffeehouse – If you didn’t visit for breakfast, this award-winning local roastery is definitely worth a stop if you haven’t had a coffee yet. 

• Treat yourself at Amélie’s French Bakery – This beloved Charlotte bakery serves classic French pastries, macarons, sandwiches, and espresso in a stunning space with a private patio. It’s the perfect place to grab a drink and rest your legs while you’re out exploring. 

• Explore the local galleries: NoDa is home to a rotating collection of independent art spaces. Keep an eye out for Paul Sires’ work; he is widely credited as the creative godfather of NoDa, and his pieces can be found throughout the neighborhood.

By the end of the morning, you’ll have a real feel for NoDa’s creative energy, and probably a full camera roll to prove it! 

Lunch – Haberdish 

When you’re ready to settle down for a bite to eat, we recommend heading to Haberdish. 

This is a Michelin Guide-recommended mill town Southern kitchen right in the heart of NoDa. Here, you’ll find elevated Southern comfort dishes rooted in the Appalachian and piedmont traditions that shaped North Charlotte, all served in a rustic (but trendy) dining room with exposed beams, denim-covered banquettes, and a soapstone bar top sourced from a Virginia quarry.

When we went for lunch, we had the fried chicken, which is legendary amongst locals, and the homemade tater tots. To be completely honest, we’re still dreaming about them! The deviled eggs and banana pudding are also local favorites.  

You won’t need a reservation unless you’re visiting with a larger group. They’re open for lunch most days from 11 am to 3 pm, with later hours on weekends. They’re also closed on Mondays, so if that happens to be your second day, a good alternative is the Goodyear House, which also serves elevated Southern comfort food. 

Afternoon – A little more free time in NoDa

After lunch, you’ve got the entire afternoon to continue exploring NoDa at whatever pace suits you. The neighborhood is compact enough to cover on foot, and it’s dense enough to fill several hours without even trying!

If you’re not sure what to do, we highly recommend visiting one of NoDa’s famous breweries while you’re here. 

NoDa Brewing Company is one of Charlotte’s most awarded craft breweries and a true neighborhood anchor. The taproom is relaxed and welcoming, and they also offer tours if you’re interested in the brewing process. If you prefer a more intimate vibe, Salud Cerveceria is a craft beer bottle shop and bar, with a funkier atmosphere and shuffleboards if you’re up for a game or two. 

You can also spend some time browsing the boutiques and galleries along N Davidson St. The strip really rewards slow walking, with independent shops, vintage finds, and rotating gallery exhibitions lining the street. It’s also the perfect place to pick up a unique souvenir, if you haven’t already. 

After lunch, you should have at least two or three hours to just wander around and see where the afternoon takes you. 

(Optional) Dinner/Evening – Discover Charlotte’s craft beer scene on a guided brewery tour

After an afternoon of brewery hopping in NoDa, this small-group brewery tour is the perfect way to keep the good vibes going. It’s an easy, all-inclusive way to dive deeper into Charlotte’s craft beer scene, without having to plan a thing.

The tour starts at 5:30 pm and is based back in Uptown, so you’ll want to grab the light rail or a quick Uber to get there. From there, you’ll spend about five hours visiting several of Charlotte’s standout breweries, sampling beer flights, and going behind the scenes to learn more bout the grain-to-glass brewing process along the way. It’s a great mix of fun and informative, especially after exploring a few spots on your own earlier in the day.

Along the way, your guide keeps things lively with local insights, recommendations, and plenty of personality. There’s also a stop at Midwood Smokehouse for a full BBQ meal that’s included! So you won’t have to worry about making separate dinner plans, and it really rounds out the experience and keeps you fueled for the evening.

Between the great beer, delicious food, and laid-back group atmosphere, it feels more like a night out with friends than a structured tour. You’ll wrap up around 10:30 pm with a deeper appreciation for Charlotte’s craft scene, and probably a few new favorite breweries to add to your list.

Dinner – Deluxe Fun Dining 

If you’re doing the brewery tour on a Thursday to Sunday evening, you’ll actually have dinner included at Midwood Smokehouse as part of the tour. However, if you’re skipping the tour, Deluxe Fun Dining is our top dinner recommendation for day two. 

This Mediterranean, European, and American-style restaurant is built around the idea that dinner should be an event in itself. And while we don’t want to spoil any of the big surprises, you can expect dishes that arrive via things like popcorn machines, vintage toasters, and handmade display trays, which is super fun! 

We tried the seafood rice and the deluxe lamb chops, and both were cooked to perfection. The Mr. Crab Dip and popcorn shrimp are also fantastic starters. You also absolutely have to try their signature cocktails, like the Diced Pineapple and the Charlotte Tropicana. They’re just as fun to look at as they are to drink!

This place is super popular and fills up quickly, so reservations are strongly recommended. They’re open for dinner most days from around 4:30 pm, with later hours on weekends, but closed on Mondays.

Day 3

Breakfast – Snooze, an A.M. Eatery 

For your final day, head to Snooze in the heart of Plaza Midwood, one of Charlotte’s most walkable neighborhoods. This lively spot has earned a reputation as a beloved destination for breakfast and brunch, and the menu takes familiar brunch classics and twists them into something genuinely memorable.

We tried the pancake flight (which gives you three different pancake varieties on one plate) and the Benny Duo (any two Benedicts from their rotating selection), and both were incredible! Plus, it’s only about a 10-minute Uber ride southeast from most Uptown hotels, so it’s not too hard to get to if that’s where you’re based. 

For timings, Snooze actually opens quite early (from 6:30 am daily), and they stay open until 2:30 pm on weekdays and 4 pm on weekends. However, since you don’t have a morning tour today, there’s no reason to rush to get there that early. Take this as an opportunity to sleep in and linger over breakfast for as long as you like! 

Morning – Wander through Plaza Midwood and Independence Park

Plaza Midwood is hands-down Charlotte’s most eclectic neighborhood, offering a lively stretch of independent restaurants, vintage shops, boutiques, and bars along Central Avenue. The energy is so effortlessly cool, and it honestly feels a world away from the more corporate Uptown. 

Here are our favorite ways to spend a morning in the area: 

• Stroll the Central Avenue strip -The main drag of Plaza Midwood is definitely worth an hour or so of your time on your final day. You can browse the independent boutiques, vintage stores, and coffee shops, just wander around and see what tickles your fancy! 

• Relax in Independence Park – Just a short walk from Central Ave, Independence Park is a beautiful 19-acre green space in the neighboring Elizabeth area. With a reflecting pond, rose garden, walking trails, demonstration gardens, and open lawns, it’s one of Charlotte’s most beloved parks for relaxing and unwinding. 

• Grab a coffee at Undercurrent Coffee – Located right on Central Ave, Undercurrent Coffee is a highly regarded local specialty coffee roaster in Plaza Midwood. Trust us, it is definitely worth a stop for a mid-morning coffee before heading back towards Uptown.

Plan to spend around two to three hours here so you can fully enjoy the neighborhood and the park. 

Afternoon – Free time

We’ve deliberately kept your afternoon free, so you can tick anything else off your list you wanted to do! There really is no wrong choice here; just go with what sounds best for you. 

Here are a few suggestions: 

• Return to a favorite spot – Head back to any museum or neighborhood from earlier in the trip that deserves a second visit. We ended up going back to the NoDa district to pop into a few more galleries we didn’t have time to see yesterday. 

• Visit the Mint Museum Uptown – This is a great option if you didn’t get the chance to visit on day one. Remember, they’re closed on Mondays, so keep that in mind when planning your afternoon.  

• Visit the Museum of Illusions – Back in Uptown Charlotte, this interactive museum is packed with mind-bending exhibits, optical illusions, and fun photo opportunities. It’s a great indoor option if you want something a little different or need a break from the heat.

• Rest and recharge – If you’re feeling a bit rundown from all the walking, just head back to the hotel to relax ahead of your send-off dinner and optional ghost tour. 

Basically, consider this part of the itinerary your permission to do as little (or as much) as you want!

Dinner – Albertine

For a fitting send-off meal, head to one of Charlotte’s finest restaurants, Albertine. This is the Uptown flagship restaurant from Joe Kindred, a five-time James Beard Award semifinalist, and the kitchen that has helped put Charlotte on the national culinary map. 

The menu draws on the flavors and traditions of the Mediterranean and features a mix of shared plates, chilled seafood, seasonal pastas, and wood-fired meats. We tried the quail with a few meze plates to share as a starter, and it was honestly such a treat.

This restaurant definitely has more of a fine-dining vibe, and prices are on the higher end (shared meze plates are around $15 to $20 USD, and mains start from around $30 USD). It can feel like a bit of a splurge, but if you enjoy fine dining experiences, it’s definitely worth it! 

Because this place is so popular with locals and tourists, reservations are absolutely essential. If you’re planning on attending the ghost tour, we recommend aiming to be seated by 5 or 5:30 pm to allow plenty of time for a relaxed dinner. 

If you aren’t going on the ghost tour, you can make a booking for a bit later in the evening and really take your time. 

Optional: Evening – Uncover the haunted history of Uptown on a ghost and pub walking tour (Fri–Sat only)

If your last day in Charlotte is on a Friday or Saturday and you want a truly unique way to cap off your trip, this haunted ghost and pub walking tour is an absolute blast. It kicks off at 7 or 7:30 pm (we recommend the 7:30 pm slot so you don’t have to rush dinner) and lasts for about two hours, wrapping up around 9:30 pm.

We always recommend this tour because it’s part ghost tour, part pub crawl. Your costumed guide will lead you through the streets of Uptown, recounting the sordid history and ghost stories of Charlotte’s past. You’ll visit notoriously haunted landmarks like the historic Dunhill Hotel and the Old Settlers Cemetery, with stops at local pubs like Connolly’s On Fifth along the way to grab a drink and steady your nerves!

The guides are incredibly entertaining and knowledgeable, and because it’s a small group tour (maximum 12 people), it feels very personal and interactive. I promise, it’s not cheesy at all; just a genuinely fun way to learn about the city’s darker history while enjoying a few drinks. The tour meets right in the lobby of The Dunhill Hotel in Uptown, which is just a short 15-minute walk or 6-minute drive away from Albertine. 

If you’re looking for something different from a typical night out, this is a great way to combine local history, ghost stories, and a relaxed pub crawl in one memorable experience.

Where to Stay in Charlotte

The 315 LoSo Hotel Airport Charlotte is a stylish, budget-friendly option in the Lower South End neighborhood that doesn’t sacrifice on style. It offers modern, refreshed rooms that feel more upscale than the price, along with a super convenient location—just 10 minutes from the airport and a short walk to the light rail for easy access to Uptown. Guests love the clean design, free parking, and great overall value.
