You’ll usually find things like kalua pork, poi, grilled pineapple, chicken, fish, and a coconut or pineapple dessert, so it’s a great way to sample a little bit of everything.

Plus, it’s just a really fun way to spend an evening. You get dinner, dancing, music, and that unmistakable Hawaii atmosphere all in one place. I think it’s especially worth doing if this is your first trip to Hawaii, but to be honest, a good luau can still be a highlight even if you’ve visited before!

This Luau Kalamaku experience is my top pick for luaus in Kauai because it really does give you the full experience in one evening! It takes place at the historic Kilohana Plantation, which already makes it feel a little extra special, and it’s available on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday evenings.

The evening begins with a lei greeting, and you’ll also get to see the traditional imu roast, where kalua pork is cooked in an underground oven. Then it’s time for the buffet, which includes a generous spread of Hawaiian favorites like kalua pork, seasonal fish, vegetable chow mein, steamed jasmine rice, and taro rolls.

And as if all of that weren’t enough to fill you up, there are also salads, fresh fruit, and desserts like pineapple upside-down cake, banana cream tart, and haupia, which is a coconut pudding. Basically, come hungry!

After dinner, the main performance tells the story of the first Tahitian explorers who journeyed to Hawaii. You can expect amazing hula dancing and powerful drumming, as well as fire poi ball dancing, which is where performers spin flaming poi balls in rhythmic patterns. It really delivers the wow factor, which is what I think most visitors are hoping for from a Kauai luau.

It’s available on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings, so it might prove to be a bit easier to fit into your Kauai itinerary.

The evening begins with an arrival lei greeting and a welcome Mai Tai or fruit punch, which is a lovely way to start things off. There’s also a hosted open bar until the main performance begins, so you can enjoy a few drinks along with dinner. Speaking of which, the meal is served buffet-style, with lots of different options to choose from. It changes regularly, which is a good thing as locally sourced Hawaiian ingredients are used wherever possible.

Another thing that makes Luau Ka Hikina stand out is that the hula performance is directed by an award-winning Kumu Hula, which means a master hula teacher – how cool is that? So while it’s still a really fun evening, there’s also a lot of cultural significance behind it. 

The only thing to note is that transportation is not included, so you’ll need to make your own way there. But if you’re staying near Kapaa, this is a super convenient and memorable Kauai luau.

3. Luau Kalamaku with Manor House 4-Course dinner 

This is the upgraded version of Luau Kalamaku, and it’s the one to choose if you want a more upmarket evening! For example, instead of the buffet dinner, you’ll start with a four-course meal at The Plantation House by Gaylord’s Restaurant. So rather than lining up for a buffet, you’ll enjoy a plated dinner in a beautiful plantation house setting, with gourmet options and a Champagne toast. It definitely makes the evening feel extra special!

After dinner, you’ll have time to explore the Kilohana Plantation grounds and browse the shops, or visit the Koloa Rum Company before making your way to the Luau Pavilion. From there, you’ll watch the Luau Kalamaku performance from a premium reserved area close to the stage, which gives you a fantastic view of the dancing, drumming, fire poi balls, and traditional fire knife dancing.

I think this is a great option for couples and special occasions. You still get to watch Kauai’s most iconic luau, but you get a more refined experience with some extra touches to make you feel like a VIP. It’s available on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday evenings, but spots tend to fill up quickly, so don’t hang around!

When should I book my luau? 

I recommend booking your Kauai luau around 4 to 6 weeks in advance, especially if you’re visiting during a busy travel period or have a specific date in mind. Some luaus only run a few nights per week, so it’s worth planning this part of your itinerary early to make sure your preferred evening works with the rest of your trip.

It’s also worth checking the different package options before you book. Some luaus offer upgrades like hotel pickup, a more refined dinner experience, or a premium viewing area, so you’ll want to choose the option that best fits the kind of evening you’re looking for.

That said, you may still find last-minute availability, especially outside peak travel periods. My family and I booked our last luau roughly two months in advance, but there were still places available closer to the date. Still, I wouldn’t rely on that if this is something that you’re really excited to do! 

The main thing is to pay close attention to the available days. Most Kauai luaus don’t run every evening, so I recommend choosing your luau early and building the rest of your plans around it.

Do luaus include transportation? 

It varies! Some luaus on Kauai do include transportation options, but it depends on the specific experience you choose. For example, Luau Kalamaku offers hotel pickup and drop-off as an optional add-on. I usually opt for this rather than hiring a car and paying those exorbitant resort parking fees – yikes.

Transportation is not always included, though, so make sure you double-check beforehand. Luau Ka Hikina, for example, does not provide pickup, so you’ll need to make your own way to the venue in Kapaa.

And if you do have a rental car, driving yourself is usually pretty straightforward. Just make sure to check the location and parking details before confirming your plans.

Where are the luaus usually located?

Most luaus on Kauai are located around the Lihue and Kapaa areas, which are both on the island’s east side. This makes them fairly convenient if you’re staying in Lihue, Kapaa, Wailua, or the nearby resort areas.

Should you go to a luau on Kauai?

Yes, I definitely think a luau is worth adding to your Kauai itinerary! It is one of the more expensive activities you can do on the island, so I think it’s important to choose carefully and pick one that includes great food and a beautiful setting. If you’re going to do it, do it right!

The luaus on this list are all highly rated and offer a full evening experience, with Hawaiian food, hula dancing, fire dancing, music, storytelling, and fun extras like lei greetings and cultural activities.
