We picked this tour because we didn’t want to drive. Now, we’re both confident drivers, but even we were nervous about dealing with the blind corners and constant hairpin turns, so we decided to leave it to a local, and it made all the difference! To those who grew up here, driving the Road to Hana is no big deal, but it’s a pretty exhausting drive if you don’t know it well. 

Speaking of our local guide, he was just fantastic – he knew the road inside out and shared so many fun local stories along the way. Meanwhile, we got to just sit back and enjoy the scenery instead of gripping the steering wheel.

And the stops were absolutely amazing! Waiʻanapanapa State Park was a huge highlight with its black sand beach and volcanic coastline, and we loved getting to swim at Puaʻa Kaʻa State Park. Keʻanae was another favorite, especially watching the waves crash against the lava rocks.

Ho‘okipa Beach Park was another fun stop because we got to see massive sea turtles relaxing on the sand, and the Rainbow Eucalyptus trees along the drive were so cool to see in person.

You can definitely rent a car and drive the Road to Hana yourself, and plenty of people do! But personally, we think that a tour is the way to go. 

For starters, there are so many little stops and hidden gems along the way that are easy to miss if you don’t know what you’re looking for. Having a guide also makes the day feel much more immersive, because you get to hear stories about the places you’re visiting, rather than just seeing them. 

Plus, driving the Road to Hana is a little tricky, to say the least. It’s narrow and busy, with lots of blind corners and one-lane bridges. Driving it can be pretty stressful, and if you’re the driver, you’ll probably be more focused on safety than views!
