Day 1
Breakfast – Sara’s Diner

We’re kicking off our Crystal River itinerary with a hearty breakfast at Sara’s Diner! This cozy, old-school diner serves all the American breakfast classics, from pancakes and omelets to biscuits and gravy.
Our favorite dish here is definitely Sara’s Special, which comes with eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes or grits, and toast or a biscuit. That should keep you going until lunchtime!
We suggest arriving around 8:30 am, so you have plenty of time to enjoy breakfast before your manatee snorkeling tour at 10 am. The tour’s meeting point is just a short drive away, making it a convenient first stop this morning.
Morning – Swim with manatees

It’s time for one of the most epic experiences in Crystal River: swimming with manatees! This is a true bucket-list activity, and we think that this three-hour snorkeling tour is the ultimate way to do it.
We recommend booking the 10 am tour, which finishes around 1 pm. The meeting point is right in downtown Crystal River, and you’ll need to arrive at least 15 minutes beforehand.
Once you’ve met your guide, you’ll get kitted out with a wetsuit, mask, and snorkel before heading out onto the water in search of wild manatees. Then, when your captain spots some, you’ll slip into the water with your guide and quietly float as these gentle giants swim around you. How amazing is that?!
The experience is all about observing the manatees respectfully, so you can’t chase or touch them. We absolutely love that ethos! For that reason, groups are also limited to 12 people so these beautiful creatures don’t get overwhelmed. You’ll also be able to purchase professional underwater photos afterward, which is probably the most incredible souvenir you could ever take home from Crystal River.
We recommend visiting between November and March for the best chance of spotting manatees, although sightings are possible year-round. And with over 3,000 glowing reviews, this is definitely one to consider booking in advance!
Lunch – Cappo’s Italian Deli

After your morning swimming with manatees, it’s time for a well-deserved lunch! We recommend heading to Cappo’s Italian Deli, a casual little spot known for its HUGE sandwiches and friendly service.
The Italian subs are the stars of the show here, especially the Scarface grinder, which is absolutely loaded with meat and cheese. You’ll also find hot Italian dishes, homemade salads, and delicious cannoli if you’ve got room for dessert!
It’s a great place to grab a filling lunch before heading off to explore Three Sisters Springs. Note that Cappo’s is closed on Sundays, but if your first day falls on a Sunday, you could always head to nearby Cajun Jimmy’s Seafood instead.
Afternoon – Walk along the Three Sisters Springs Boardwalk

After lunch, head over to the Three Sisters Springs Boardwalk for another chance to spot Crystal River’s famous manatees! The wooden boardwalk winds around the gorgeous turquoise springs, with viewing platforms where you can look down into the water. If you’re visiting during winter, you might even see dozens of manatees gathered below!
We recommend allowing about 1.5 hours, as there’s more to explore than just the boardwalk. The surrounding refuge has several lovely walking trails, so you can wander around, enjoy the scenery, and keep an eye out for other wildlife, especially birds.
The refuge is generally open daily from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, though admission fees vary by season. We recommend checking the latest prices and visitor information before you go!
Late Afternoon – Explore downtown Crystal River

After exploring Three Sisters Springs, head into downtown Crystal River for a wander! There’s so much more to this town than just manatees, and we think it’s well worth spending a little time exploring the historic center.
We’d recommend starting along Citrus Avenue, where you’ll find colorful murals, cute independent boutiques, and plenty of local restaurants and cafés. It’s a lovely area to explore on foot, so take your time browsing the shops and admiring the street art.
You don’t need to plan anything too specific here. Just enjoy wandering around and getting a feel for this charming little Florida town. Then, as sunset approaches, head to nearby Hunter Springs Park for beautiful waterfront views!
Sunset – Hunter Springs Park

As the afternoon draws to a close, make your way to Hunter Springs Park for lovely waterfront views! This beautiful little park sits right on Kings Bay and has a sandy beach, grassy picnic areas, and a boardwalk where you can admire the scenery.
It’s a great place to relax after a busy day of exploring, and you might even spot a manatee swimming past! We’d recommend finding a nice spot by the water to enjoy the late-afternoon sunshine and, if the park is open late enough, watch the sunset. Just check the seasonal opening hours before visiting, as the park closes earlier in winter.
Dinner – The Crab Plant

For dinner tonight, we’re heading to The Crab Plant, a fantastic waterfront seafood restaurant in Crystal River! This family-run restaurant serves some seriously fresh seafood, including locally caught grouper, shrimp, and several varieties of crab. It even has its own seafood market next door, so you know you’re getting the real deal.
We love that it’s a casual, no-frills place, with water views and plenty of delicious seafood to choose from. It’s a great spot to finish your first day in Crystal River!
Just remember that The Crab Plant is cash-only and closes on Sundays and Mondays. It’s open until 8:30 pm on other days, so make sure to arrive in time for dinner.
Day 2
Breakfast – Cattle Dog Coffee Roasters

We’re kicking off day two with breakfast at Cattle Dog Coffee Roasters, a lovely little coffee shop in downtown Crystal River!
As the name suggests, these guys take their coffee seriously, with a fantastic selection of locally roasted blends. But there’s plenty to eat here, too, including breakfast sandwiches, bagels, and freshly baked pastries. We’d definitely recommend grabbing something filling, as you’ve got a busy morning ahead.
The café opens at 7 am Monday through Saturday, so we suggest arriving around 7:45–8 am. It’s only about a three-minute drive from your kayaking tour’s meeting point, giving you plenty of time to enjoy breakfast before your 9 am departure.
Morning – Kayak around Three Sisters Springs with manatees

It’s time for another amazing wildlife adventure – don’t say we don’t spoil you! This morning, we’re heading out on this clear kayak tour of Three Sisters Springs, where you’ll explore Crystal River’s beautiful waterways in a completely transparent kayak. How cool is that?!
We recommend booking the 9 am tour, which lasts for two hours and finishes around 11 am, leaving you plenty of time for lunch afterward. During the tour, you’ll paddle around Kings Bay with a knowledgeable local guide, take in the gorgeous spring-fed waterways, and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife.
And if you’re visiting between November and March, you’ve got a fantastic chance of spotting manatees! You might even see one swimming directly underneath your kayak, which would be pretty unforgettable.
With that said, during the warmer months, you still have a decent chance of sightings. Plus, in the spring and summer, this tour will take you inside the Three Sisters Springs for a swim, which is an exciting bonus!
We also love that groups are limited to just 10 people, so it’s a nice, personal experience. And with over 2,000 fantastic reviews, it’s clearly popular, so take advantage of Viator’s free cancellation policy and book your spot in advance.
Why We Book Tours with Viator
Viator is a trusted online booking system for tours around the world! We almost always book our tours using Viator for a couple of reasons:
Lunch – St. Johns Tavern

After your morning kayaking adventure, head back into downtown Crystal River for lunch at St. Johns Tavern! This cozy, old-school tavern is a great place to refuel, with exposed brick walls and a welcoming atmosphere. Oh, and plenty of hearty American food!
The menu is packed with pub classics, including juicy smash burgers, Reuben sandwiches, and hot dogs. The giant Bavarian pretzel with beer cheese is probably our favorite, though, and it’s definitely worth ordering if you’re feeling hungry.
There’s also a great selection of craft beers and cocktails if you fancy a drink. The tavern opens at 11 am daily, so the timing works perfectly after your kayaking tour finishes. Then, once you’ve eaten, it’s time to discover some of Crystal River’s fascinating history!
Afternoon – Visit the Crystal River State Archaeological Site

After lunch, it’s time to discover another side of Crystal River’s history! Just a 10-minute drive from downtown, you’ll find Crystal River Archaeological State Park, a fascinating 61-acre (25-hectare) historic site that’s home to Native American burial mounds dating back almost 2,000 years.
We recommend allowing around 1.5 hours to explore the park. You can follow the walking paths past the ancient mounds and learn about the people who once gathered here for ceremonies and trading. Be sure to check out Temple Mound A, where you can climb to the top for some beautiful views over Crystal River!
There’s also a small archaeological museum that’s worth visiting if it’s open, as it provides more insight into the site’s fascinating history. The park is open daily from 8 am until sunset, and admission costs just $3 USD per vehicle. We think it’s a fantastic and affordable way to spend an afternoon!
Late Afternoon/Sunset – Fort Island Beach

After exploring the archaeological park, we’re heading to the beach! Fort Island Beach is about a 20-minute drive away, and it’s a beautiful spot for a late-afternoon visit.
This little beach sits right on the Gulf Coast, with soft white sand and lovely water views. It’s much quieter than Florida’s big resort beaches, which is exactly why we think it’s worth visiting!
We’d recommend arriving with plenty of time to relax, perhaps taking a stroll along the sand or simply finding a nice spot to watch the sunset. The views here are gorgeous, especially as the sun starts dipping towards the horizon.
There aren’t many facilities out here, so bring some drinks and snacks to enjoy while you wait for sunset. Temporary restrooms are available, but don’t expect many beach bars or restaurants nearby.
Dinner – Kane’s Cattle Co.

After sunset, head back to Crystal River for dinner! We recommend Kane’s Cattle Co., a popular steakhouse located along Citrus Avenue, about a 15-minute drive from Fort Island Beach.
If you’re craving a good steak after a busy day, this is the place to go! The menu features classic steakhouse favorites, including ribeye and filet mignon—yum. There’s also plenty of seafood on offer if you fancy something a little lighter.
We love that it’s a casual restaurant, so you can enjoy a proper sit-down dinner without needing to get too dressed up after your beach adventure. Hours vary throughout the week, so be sure to check hours online before you go, especially if you’re planning to stay at the beach until sunset!
Day 3
Breakfast – Grannie’s Country Cookin’ Restaurant

We’re kicking off our final day in Crystal River with a hearty breakfast at Grannie’s Country Cookin’ Restaurant! This cozy, old-school diner is known for generous portions and classic Southern comfort food, so come hungry!
You’ll find all the breakfast favorites here, including fluffy pancakes, omelets, biscuits and gravy, and country-fried steak with eggs. It’s the perfect place to fuel up before another busy day of exploring.
Grannie’s opens at 6 am daily and sits right along Highway 19, making it a convenient stop on your way to Homosassa. We recommend arriving around 8:30 am for a relaxed breakfast before heading to the wildlife park, as you’ll want plenty of time to explore today.
Morning – Visit Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park

After breakfast, head to Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, just a short drive south of Crystal River. This fascinating wildlife park is home to all sorts of Florida’s native animals, including manatees, alligators, black bears, Florida panthers, and beautiful birds! Many of the resident animals were rescued or can’t survive in the wild, so the park is also a great place to learn about wildlife conservation.
One highlight is the underwater observatory, known as the Fish Bowl, where you can look beneath the spring’s surface and watch fish and manatees swimming around. We think that’s pretty amazing!
We recommend arriving around 10 am and allowing 1.5-2 hours to explore. The park opens at 9 am daily, and there’s even a manatee educational program at 11 am that’s well worth catching.
A few restaurants are around Homosassa if you’re hungry afterward, but we suggest having a big breakfast and bringing snacks. That way, you can save your appetite for drinks and appetizers at Crump’s Landing after your afternoon airboat adventure!
Afternoon – Take a thrilling airboat ride in Homosassa

If you’re ready for something a little more adventurous, it’s time for this exciting airboat tour in Homosassa! We recommend booking the 1:30 pm tour, which lasts for 90 minutes and finishes around 3 pm.
You’ll meet your captain at Crumps’ Landing, then head out along the Homosassa River toward the Gulf of Mexico. What we love about this tour is that it takes you through remote areas that ordinary boats can’t reach, so get ready to speed across shallow waters and weave through mangroves. It’s SO much fun!
But for us, the best part is the wildlife! Dolphins are a particular highlight, and you might also spot manatees, sea turtles, ospreys, and other coastal birds. If you’re lucky, you could even have dolphins popping up alongside the boat to say hello—pretty cool, right?
And don’t worry, because it’s not all high-speed thrills. Your captain will slow down whenever there’s wildlife to see, giving you time to take photos and learn about the local ecosystem.
Groups are limited to just six people, so it’s a nice, personal experience. Hearing protection is also provided, although we’d recommend bringing a jacket because it can get pretty windy out on the water!
Late afternoon – Enjoy waterfront drinks at Crump’s Landing

After your airboat adventure, there’s no need to rush off! You’re already at Crumps’ Landing, where your tour departed, so we recommend sticking around for some drinks and appetizers.
This laid-back waterfront restaurant has a fun tiki bar and plenty of outdoor seating, so you can enjoy beautiful views over the Homosassa River as you sip on a refreshing cocktail. From some tables, you can even see the famous Monkey Island!
We loved the peel-and-eat shrimp here, partly because eating it felt like such a quintessentially Floridian experience. The smoked fish dip was really yummy, too. There’s often live entertainment here as well, so it’s a really fun place to spend the afternoon unwinding after all of your adventures today. Just keep in mind Crump’s Landing is closed on Mondays, so plan ahead.
Dinner – Waterfront Social

For your final dinner in Crystal River, we recommend Waterfront Social, a lovely restaurant overlooking Kings Bay. After a day exploring Homosassa, head back to your hotel to freshen up before heading here for the evening.
The restaurant specializes in Southern coastal cuisine, with plenty of fresh seafood, delicious appetizers, and creative cocktails. There’s both indoor and outdoor seating, but we definitely recommend requesting a waterfront table if you can!
And the views are a HUGE selling point. The restaurant’s tiki bar overlooks Kings Bay, making it a fantastic place to catch one last Florida sunset while enjoying your dinner. What a lovely way to round off three unforgettable days in Crystal River!

What’s an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of buying a little plastic chip and swapping it into your phone, you just download it. It connects your phone to a local network in whatever country you’re visiting — no stores, no waiting, and no fiddling with tiny cards.
In simple terms, it’s the easiest way to get data and stay connected while traveling.
We’ve tested a bunch of eSIMs over the years, and after a few frustrating experiences, we’ve found our favorite — Airalo. It’s fast, reliable, and incredibly easy to use. You can set it up in minutes (even my mom managed it solo on her first try!), and the prices are some of the best out there.
