Our Top Choice

The tour we loved the most and suggest booking ASAP is this one!
Our personal FAVORITE thing we did was this best of San Antonio sightseeing tour! It combines all the highlights like the Alamo, the Tower of the Americas, and a river cruise. It was a stress-free way to see the city with a small group and a great guide.
San Antonio at a glance

San Antonio is pretty easy to navigate, but a few local tips can make your trip even more enjoyable. After several visits, we found these things especially helpful!
Important Tip: Plan your days to avoid midday heat and use ridesharing!
Beat the heat: San Antonio can get melty hot in the summer, and mid-day temps are not ideal for venturing out on foot. Plan to visit in the shoulder seasons (March to May or September to November) for the most comfortable weather. If you do visit in the heat of summer, plan outdoor activities for mornings or evenings.
Rideshare: Renting a car in San Antonio is easy, but if you’re planning to do most of the historic or downtown sights, you can easily get around with a combination of rideshares and walking. Uber and Lyft are super accessible here!
Try all the food: San Antonio has flavors of all kinds to indulge in. The city is known for being the birthplace of delicious Puffy Tacos at Ray’s Drive Inn (corn masa that’s deep-fried, resulting in an airy, crisp taco shell). You’ll also want to try Tex-Mex, breakfast tacos, and pan dulce!
How I would spend 3 days in San Antonio

San Antonio is full of history, culture, and unique experiences. Cruising along the River Walk, touring missions, tasting Hill Country wine, or even chasing ghosts. With so much to see and do, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed when trying to fit it all in. Here’s how we would spend it if we only had three days in this lively city:
Day 1: Start your time in San Antonio and see all of the city’s best sites on a small-group tour, including the Alamo, Tower of the Americas, and a boat tour. After lunch, explore the River Walk’s many attractions like gardens, murals, and even a Western art museum. To top it all off, head to the Magic Saloon for a western-themed magic show or see a production at the Majestic Theatre.
Day 2: On day two, you’ll head out to the Texas Hill Country and have a choice of how to spend your time. Option one has you wine tasting your way through Fredericksburg, while option two will let you explore the history of Texas Hill Country. Regardless of what you choose, you can look forward to a fancy dinner in San Antonio’s upscale Pearl District.
Day 3: On your final day, you’ll start by shopping at the Mexican Historic Market Square. Afterward, you have a choice of either seeing the Hopscotch Immersive Art Experience, going to the Museum of Art, the Japanese Tea Gardens, or the San Antonio Zoo! To end on a high (and spooky) note, you’ll learn all about San Antonio’s haunted past on a bus tour.

Things to do in San Antonio, Texas
1. Visit San Antonio’s UNESCO-listed Missions

Tour Details
We’ve always been curious about San Antonio’s missions, but didn’t want to just wander around aimlessly reading plaques, so this small-group tour was perfect for us! Not only did we get to see them all in one go, but with only 12 people max, we could ask tons of questions.
Our first stop was Mission Concepcion, where the original 1700s frescos were still visible—faded but impressively detailed! Then came Mission San Jose, with its intricate baroque facade that revealed new details the longer we looked. No wonder they call it the “Queen of the Missions!”
At Mission San Juan, we were fascinated to learn how early settlers used irrigation for farming. It was like stepping into the blueprint of a self-sustaining community. Then we arrived at Mission Espada, the smallest of the four, with a rustic charm that transported us back in time.
We also passed by The Alamo and heard about its role in Texas history. While an Alamo tour isn’t included, you can take a self-guided visit afterward.
Our guide, Alex, made the trip even better! He was hilarious and shared stories you’d never find in a book. He even gave us restaurant recommendations and tips for taking the best photos!
This tour combined history, culture, and local insights without making us feel rushed or overwhelmed. If you want to see San Antonio’s missions without the hassle of big tour groups, this is the way to do it!
2. See San Antonio’s best sights – Riverwalk Boat Cruise and the Alamo

Tour Details
If you want to experience the best of San Antonio without the stress of planning, this driving tour and river cruise is the way to do it! With stops at the Alamo, San Jose Mission, Tower of the Americas, and a River Walk cruise, everything is arranged for you!
What really stood out was how personal it felt. With just seven people in our group, it was almost like a private tour, and our guide, Autumn, brought each stop to life with fascinating stories.
We started at the Alamo, where Autumn pointed out key battle sites and explained the massive 16-pounder cannon. At San Jose Mission, the beautiful stonework and centuries of history made it feel like we’d stepped back in time.
But we found the best views of the city at the Tower of the Americas. It’s totally worth the elevator ride up! And by the time we stepped onto our River Walk cruise, we were ready to just sit back and relax. Floating along the winding waterway, we passed lively restaurants, stone bridges, and historic buildings like the colorful La Villita, one of San Antonio’s oldest neighborhoods.
This tour made exploring San Antonio effortless and fun. But if you’re more of a night owl, there’s also this evening experience.
Instead of visiting Mission San José, you’ll spend time at the trendy Pearl District and get to see the incredible light show at San Fernando Cathedral, where colorful projections bring the city’s history to life right on the church facade. Plus, with cooler temperatures and the River Walk beautifully illuminated after dark, it’s a fantastic way to experience a completely different side of San Antonio!
3. Browse the Pearl Historic District

If you’re looking for an outdoor space to spend a few hours between sightseeing, the Historic Pearl District is the perfect choice. Once a historic brewery, the area is now a walkable district where you can eat, shop, relax, and explore.
Wandering the open courtyards and taking in the restored industrial buildings always makes me appreciate how cool repurposing spaces can be. Every corner is full of history and modern design. I especially love peeking inside Hotel Emma to see how the old brewery spaces were transformed into one of the city’s most beautiful hotels.
Food is a huge part of the surroundings here. In the old bottling building, you’ll find a food hall with five different delicious vendors and outdoor seating. If you visit on the weekend, the Pearl Farmers Market offers local produce, baked goods, handmade items, and a lively atmosphere. Saturdays focus on fresh, local produce, and on Sundays, you can score some unique hand-made goods.
After browsing the Pearl, I like to walk the quieter Museum Reach section of the San Antonio River Walk. It runs just steps away from the district and has shaded paths, public art, and river views that create the perfect setting for an afternoon stroll.
4. Learn about the city’s spooky history on a Haunted Ghost Bus tour

Tour Details
If you don’t put much stock in ghost stories, you just may after this original ghost bus tour in San Antonio! This isn’t just a collection of spooky tales but a journey through the city’s haunted history, led by guides who speak about the spirits like they are old friends.
You’ll start at the Menger Hotel, a place with so many ghost sightings that even the staff has stories of their own eerie encounters. As you step inside, the air feels heavier, and the flickering lights cast just enough shadow to make you question what you see.
Stories are spun about guests who checked in but never checked out, and although there’s plenty of air conditioning to blame this on, it’s enough to make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.
Next, you’ll ride through San Pedro Creek Culture Park, passing what was once the city’s Red Light District and an old jail-turned-Holiday Inn Express. A strange place to sleep, considering its past! The bus eventually stops at one of San Antonio’s oldest cemeteries, where you’ll walk among gravestones dating back centuries.
Between the chilling ghost stories and eerie stops, the whole experience feels like a trip into San Antonio’s supernatural past. For an easy way to explore the city’s most haunted sites, this bus tour will make a believer out of you!
5. Wander El Mercado

Looking for a big celebration of San Antonio’s culture and energy? Head to El Mercado and you’ll find it! Also known as Market Square, this lively area is the kind of place where you show up to browse and end up spending the whole afternoon enjoying the atmosphere.
As you make your way through the market, you’ll be greeted by bright papel picado banners and the smell of sizzling food pulling you in every direction. Each little shop within the market is colorful and friendly. You’ll find handmade goods, Mexican folk art, pottery, fun souvenirs, and jewelry.
I love coming here for authentic tacos and settling into the courtyard to watch people. If you’re lucky enough to be here during a mini fiesta over the weekend or while a festival is going on, you’ll get the full celebration effect with live Tejano music, dancing, and even more food.
More than anything, El Mercado is alive with its colorful, welcoming energy. It’s an excellent spot to soak in San Antonio culture!
6. Go wine tasting in the charming town of Fredericksburg

Tour Details
We never knew Texas had such a solid wine scene until we spent a day sipping our way through Hill Country. With just ten people on this full-day wine-tasting tour, it felt like a relaxed day out—good wine, great conversation, and a guide who knew all the behind-the-scenes details that made each stop even better.
We started at Sister Creek Vineyards, housed in a historic cotton gin from the 1800s. The scent of oak barrels hit the moment we stepped inside, and after a tour of the production room, we sampled a mix of reds and whites. Their Bordeaux-style red? Smooth, bold, and way too easy to drink!
At Texas Wine Collective (the second winery varies by tour), we switched things up with new flavors, learning how the Texas heat gives their wines a distinct character. Each pour felt like a lesson in just how good Texas wine can be!
We had free time to explore Fredericksburg, so we grabbed bratwurst and warm pretzel bites at a cozy German café before wandering through a shop filled with handcrafted leather goods—the kind that smelled like adventure and aged whiskey!
We’ve done wine tours before, but this one was totally different! For a laid-back, well-paced wine tour that skips the crowds but delivers on quality, this one’s a must. Check out the rave reviews here and see why this is an award-winning tour!
7. Stroll La Villita Historic Arts Village

Visiting La Villita Historic Arts Village is a completely different experience from San Antonio’s other shopping spots. Originally one of the city’s first neighborhoods, it now sits right along the busy River Walk, yet everything feels a little quieter, slower, and hidden away.
Brick pathways lead to historic stone and adobe buildings filled with local galleries, artist studios, and small boutiques. I like to take some time to linger inside the Little Studio Gallery to admire local artwork and handcrafted pieces. There are over 25 other village shops and galleries to browse, but Plaza Taxaco (custom silver jewelry) and Capistrano Soap Company (all-natural soaps) stand out as favorites.
Make sure you also check out the Arneson River Theatre overlooking the river. It is a gorgeous outdoor amphitheater that often hosts live music, plays, and performances.
8. Step into San Antonio’s most magical experience

Tour Details
San Antonio has plenty of history, great food, and famous attractions, but sometimes it’s fun to do something a little different! That’s exactly where this magic show comes in. Part immersive experience, part comedy show, and part mind-bending magic performance, this is one of the most unique and family-friendly nights out in the city.
The fun starts before the main show even begins. As you explore the themed saloon, you’ll take part in a scavenger hunt and interactive activities that help set the scene. We love that it’s not a case of simply finding your seat and waiting for the curtain to rise. The experience begins the moment you walk through the door.
Then it’s time for the main event. For around an hour, you’ll be treated to a fast-paced mix of magic, illusion, and comedy that keeps the audience engaged from start to finish. Expect impossible tricks, plenty of laughs, and more than a few moments where you’ll be wondering, “How did they do that?!”
Whether you’re visiting with family, friends, or on a date night, this is a fantastic way to add something a little different to your San Antonio itinerary.
Why We Book Tours with Viator
Viator is a trusted online booking system for tours around the world! We almost always book our tours using Viator for a couple of reasons:
9. Relax at the Japanese Tea Garden

If you’re looking for a peaceful and scenic way to spend the afternoon, head to the Japanese Tea Garden, just an 8-minute drive from downtown. Open daily until 5 pm with free admission, it’s a great stop to combine with other tour activities throughout the day.
Walking in, you’ll notice how quiet everything gets. Instead of city noise, you’ll hear running water and birds chirping. The pathways wind through lush landscaping, koi ponds, and lead you under beautiful stone archways, across little bridges, and past waterfalls tucked into the gardens.
It’s the kind of place where you naturally slow down because of the space’s peaceful nature. You can wander, stop for photos, sit for a while, or just enjoy the scenery. Make sure to wander over to the Sunken Garden Theatre, which hosts concerts year-round.
After a busy day exploring San Antonio, the Japanese Tea Garden is like a reset button: calm, beautiful, and easy to fit into your afternoon.
10. Taste your way around San Antonio

Tour Details
San Antonio has no shortage of incredible food, and if you ask me, one of the best ways to really get to know a city is by walking through it and tasting what the locals love. This food tour gives you the chance to do both at once.
Arrive hungry! San Antonio does not do small portions or hold back on flavor. Along the way, you’ll stop for six different tastings that showcase some of the city’s best food.
You can expect everything from what many locals consider the best burger in town to tacos, smoked turkey, and a sweet gelato treat. Each stop is locally owned or family operated, giving you a much more authentic experience with the city’s food scene than you’d find at chain restaurants.
One of the things that makes this experience stand out is the small group size. Instead of trying to keep up with a huge crowd, you’ll actually have time to enjoy the food, ask questions, and hear the stories behind each stop.
Between tastings, you’ll get to pass some of San Antonio’s most iconic landmarks, including the Alamo, the River Walk, the Kallison Love Lock Bridge, and the Bexar County Courthouse. The guides bring each location to life with local history and insights you likely wouldn’t discover on your own.
It’s a memorable way to experience San Antonio’s culture, one bite at a time. With nearly 200 glowing reviews, we’re not the only ones who think so!
11. Explore underground caverns

Tour Details
Before visiting San Antonio, I assumed we’d mostly be visiting historical landmarks and delicious food in the Texas heat. So, as soon as I heard there were underground caves to explore, I had to join this cavern’s tour to find out more (and escape the sun for a little while).
It begins above ground about 30 minutes north of downtown San Antonio at Natural Bridge Caverns. You’ll be guided about 180 feet (55 meters) underground into the cooler, quieter world of massive cave chambers and passageways. Over the course of about 75 minutes, your guide will lead you through the Discovery Cavern, explaining the science behind how these dramatic rock formations were shaped over thousands of years.
As you move through the LED illuminated underground spaces, expect towering formations, hidden corners, and moments where the sheer scale of the caverns really wows you. It’s truly another world down there! I loved seeing the “fried-egg” stalagmite formations that looked like they were dripping from the ceiling.
After you’re done exploring the underworld of Texas, grab some slow-roasted brisket at the restaurant on-site, along with their bestseller: giant cubes of mixed flavored fudge! To add to the adventure, you can join other activities like zip lines or adventure ropes at an additional cost.
This tour was truly something unique that I didn’t expect when visiting San Antonio; it’s an impressive display of geological magic!
12. Discover local art at Ruby City

Ruby City celebrates contemporary art by artists from every walk of life. Created by philanthropist and artist Linda Pace, it’s located in San Antonio’s Southtown district and feels like a quiet escape from the city.
Before you walk inside, the building itself will grab your attention, standing out with a bold red exterior surrounded by green space and walking paths. It’s meant to be noticed! Inside, the galleries are calm and uncluttered, giving you space to actually take in the artwork instead of feeling overwhelmed.
Some exhibits are colorful and playful, while others are more abstract and reflective. I like that the experience never seems intimidating or stuffy, as some galleries can feel. You can move at your own pace and connect with whatever catches your attention.
The biggest perk of visiting is that admission is free, which makes it easy to pop in without committing your whole day. After exploring the galleries, you can wander the surrounding sculpture garden and pathways for a quieter break from downtown.
13. Catch the big one on Canyon Lake

Tour Details
If you’re looking for a relaxing day on the water with just the right mix of fun and fishing, this private fishing trip on Canyon Lake is a reel treat. Whether you’re brand new to fishing or a seasoned angler, this experience is tailored to meet you at your level and help you land some serious bass.
You’ll head out on a sleek 22-foot Triton TrX Elite boat with your guide, who knows the lake like the back of his hand. Your guide not only supplies all the rods, reels, and gear but also offers helpful coaching to boost your skills along the way!
Canyon Lake is known for its clear waters and healthy population of largemouth bass, and the guide will help you target the best fishing spots. We appreciated the added bonus of hearing about local landmarks and scenic points around the lake as we drifted or cruised between casts.
This four-hour charter is perfect for individuals, couples, or small groups who want a personalized outdoor experience. There’s no pressure, just a great time fishing and soaking up the Texas Hill Country scenery. If you’re craving a peaceful day on the water, with a few fish tales to tell by the end, this one’s a catch!
14. Delve into interactive art at Hopscotch San Antonio

If you’re looking for something a little different, Hopscotch San Antonio is one of the city’s most modern and immersive attractions. It’s an interactive space where you don’t just view the art—you become part of it!
Unlike a traditional art gallery, you’ll actually step inside the artwork itself as you explore more than 20,000 square feet (1,900 square meters) of interactive installations created by artists from around the world. From mesmerizing light displays and optical illusions to larger-than-life projections and colorful exhibits, every room offers something completely unique.
The best part is that this isn’t a “look but don’t touch” kind of place, but you’re meant to jump in and get involved. Bounce into the glowing ball pit, wander through mind-bending mirrored spaces, and snap plenty of photos along the way. Since the installations are self-guided, you can take your time exploring at your own pace and spend anywhere from an hour to a couple of hours here.
Once you’ve finished exploring, head out to the patio bar for a specialty cocktail or local beer before continuing your day downtown. Tickets start at around $25 USD per person, and since entry is timed, it’s a good idea to book online in advance, especially if you’re visiting on a weekend.
15. Get around the city easily on a hop-on, hop-off trolley

Tour Details
San Antonio is full of history, culture, and must-see landmarks, and this hop-on, hop-off trolley tour makes it easy to experience them all. With 12 stops along the way, you can explore the city’s top sights—without exhausting your feet!
From the legendary Alamo to the vibrant Pearl District, you’ll have the freedom to explore at your own pace. And the best part? You get the second consecutive day free, so there was no need to rush through it all in one go!
Start your day at Alamo Plaza, where you can smell the Tex-Mex in the air while being entertained by street performers. After taking in the iconic Alamo, hop back on the trolley for more exploring! The live narration makes the ride even better, sharing details you may miss on your own.
You can stay on board for the full 90-100 minute tour and soak in the sights with commentary, or hop on and off as you please to explore stops like San Fernando Cathedral, the San Antonio Museum of Art, and the Botanical Garden. One of the best is Market Square, where you can wander through colorful shops and sample fresh pan dulce!
You will love the flexibility, spending extra time in spots that spark your interest and simply catching the next trolley when you’re ready. Whether you want to see San Antonio all in one go or take your time over two days, this trolley tour makes it easy!

What’s an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of buying a little plastic chip and swapping it into your phone, you just download it. It connects your phone to a local network in whatever country you’re visiting — no stores, no waiting, and no fiddling with tiny cards.
In simple terms, it’s the easiest way to get data and stay connected while traveling.
We’ve tested a bunch of eSIMs over the years, and after a few frustrating experiences, we’ve found our favorite — Airalo. It’s fast, reliable, and incredibly easy to use. You can set it up in minutes (even my mom managed it solo on her first try!), and the prices are some of the best out there.
