Kauai at a Glance

Kauai’s natural beauty, warm culture, and laid-back vibe make it an incredible place to visit! That said, there are a few tips I recommend to keep your trip running smoothly.
Renting a car: To get the best out of your Kauai experience, it’s really best to have your own vehicle to get around the island. Public transportation is limited, and having a car makes it easy to get to everything I have planned for you!
Reserve everything early: I’m sure you’re aware, but Kauai is super popular! Having your ducks in a row for reservations before you arrive is necessary to avoid any sold-out experiences or limited availability.
Embrace the weather: It rains in Kauai often. But temperatures are always comfortable. Bring a light rain jacket along with your flops and beachwear, and you’ll be just fine!

Things to do in Kauai, Hawaii
1. Kayak and hike to Secret Falls

Tour Details
If you’re looking for an active and adventurous way to experience Kauai’s natural beauty, this Secret Falls kayaking and hiking tour is for you!
The adventure begins with a relaxing paddle down the Wailua River in double kayaks. Surrounded by lush greenery and tranquil vibes, our guide, Sam, made the journey so much fun by pointing out fascinating wildlife and sharing intriguing tidbits about Hawaii’s rich history.
And if you’re new to kayaking, no worries – Sam was super helpful and full of great tips. We were paddling like pros in no time!
After the paddle, we traded kayaks for hiking boots and hit a scenic 1.5-mile (2.4-kilometer) trail to Uluwehi Falls (aka Secret Falls). The trail is moderately challenging, with a few muddy patches and uneven terrain, so a basic level of fitness is needed. But trust me, the effort is absolutely worth it when you reach the breathtaking waterfall!
Don’t forget your bathing suit – the refreshing dip in the pool at the base of the falls was the perfect way to cool off after the hike!
This tour is a fantastic option for solo travelers, families, or anyone craving a fun, active day in Kauai’s outdoors. With HUNDREDS of glowing 5-star reviews and limited availability on select days, make sure to book in advance to secure your spot!
2. Attend a Hawaiian Luau

Tour Details
Whenever I visit Hawaii, a luau is a must, and this Luau Kalamaku experience is my top pick. Lonely Planet rated it as the best luau on Kauai and I have to agree!
First off, it takes place at the historic Kilohana Plantation, which already makes it feel a little extra special. I highly recommend upgrading your ticket to include a ride on the Kauai Plantation Railway to see this beautiful place before the show!
The evening begins with a lei greeting, and you’ll also get to see the traditional imu roast, where kalua pork is cooked in an underground oven. Then it’s time for the buffet, which includes a generous spread of my personal Hawaiian favorites like kalua pork, fresh fish, fluffy taro rolls, and haupia (coconut pudding).
After dinner, the main performance tells the story of the first Tahitian explorers who journeyed to Hawaii. You can expect amazing hula dancing and powerful drumming, as well as fire poi ball dancing, which is where performers spin flaming poi balls in rhythmic patterns. It really delivers the wow factor – I was on the edge of my seat!
I also love that Luau Kalamaku takes place under a covered, open-air pavilion, so it’s a great choice even if the weather is a little unpredictable. You can even add hotel pickup to make life easy. This luau is available on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday evenings, so plan ahead for this one to ensure you can fit it into your trip!
3. Explore Na Pali Coast on a raft and snorkel tour

Tour Details
The Na Pali Coast is one of the most stunning places in all of Hawaii, and this snorkel and rafting adventure is the perfect way to experience it up close! If you’re craving dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and plenty of adventure, I know you’ll love this tour.
The tour kicks off with an exhilarating motorized raft ride along the coast. Bouncing over the waves while taking in the towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls was unforgettable. Plus, the small raft allowed us to explore hidden sea caves and secluded beaches – places larger boats can’t access. It felt like we were uncovering secret spots at every turn!
When it came time to snorkel, I couldn’t wait to dive in. The underwater world here is just as beautiful as the coast above, with vibrant coral reefs and colorful fish. We even spotted a sea turtle gliding gracefully through the water – talk about a bucket-list moment!
Our guides were incredible, sharing fascinating stories about the area’s history and pointing out unique landmarks along the way. Their enthusiasm and knowledge added so much to the experience.
Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or just want to soak in the beauty of Kauai, this tour is a must. It’s no wonder it has hundreds of glowing reviews – this adventure is worth every penny!
4. Take a beach day

If you’re visiting Kauai, you absolutely MUST spend some time at the beach! With so many beautiful stretches of coastline to choose from, it can be hard to know where to start.
These are a few of my favorite beaches, with each offering something a little different, whether you’re looking for a relaxing afternoon, dramatic scenery, or a family-friendly spot to cool off.
- Hanalei Beach – Best for a Relaxing Beach Day – Hanalei Beach is one of my favorite places to spend a couple of hours relaxing. The wide stretch of golden sand is backed by Kauai’s dramatic green mountains, and when conditions are calm, the water can be great for wading or a gentle swim. It’s also right by Hanalei Pier and is a fantastic spot to watch the sunset at the end of the day.
- Ha’ena Beach – Best for Scenery – Ha’ena Beach is a beautiful place to slow down and soak up Kauai’s dramatic North Shore scenery. The wide, golden-sand beach is backed by towering cliffs, giving it a rugged and scenic feel. I especially like this one as a quick stop while exploring the North Shore.
- Lydgate Beach Park – Best for Families – Lydgate Beach Park is a popular option for families thanks to its protected swimming areas. Its rock-enclosed pools can provide more sheltered water than many of Kauai’s exposed beaches, making it a nice place to cool off and spend a relaxed afternoon.
- Poipu Beach Park – Best for a Classic Beach Day – Poipu Beach Park is another favorite for an easygoing beach day. Its sheltered areas are popular for swimming and snorkeling, and there’s plenty of room to simply relax on the sand. It’s also conveniently located near many of the restaurants and attractions in Poipu, making it easy to pair with a day exploring the South Shore.
5. Get your adrenaline pumping on a zipline

Tour Details
As someone who loves adventure, ziplining is always at the top of my list, and this zipline tour in Kauai didn’t disappoint – it was the most fun I’ve had in ages! Flying over the island’s lush landscapes, valleys, and streams felt like something straight out of a movie.
The course features eight thrilling lines, and what I loved most was how flexible it was. You can zip the traditional way, go hands-free, or try the “flyin’ Kauaian” style (face-first, like a superhero!). Of course, I had to give it a shot, and wow, it truly felt like I was flying over the jungle!
The guides were incredible. Not only did they make everyone feel safe and confident, but they also shared fun facts about Kauai’s history and unique ecosystem between zips. They kept the vibe light and fun while teaching us how to get the most out of each ride.
Whether it’s your first time ziplining or you’re a pro, this is an experience you won’t forget. The mix of adrenaline and jaw-dropping scenery is unbeatable. And if you’re still on the fence, just read some of the thousands of 5-star reviews – this tour is a crowd favorite for a reason!
6. Enjoy a sunset dinner cruise

Tour Details
There’s nothing quite like experiencing the breathtaking Na Pali Coast at golden hour, and this sunset dinner cruise makes it possible! If you’re looking for a mix of stunning scenery, relaxation, and a touch of romance, this experience is a must.
We set sail in the late afternoon, greeted by a welcoming crew with refreshing drinks. Cruising along the rugged coastline, I was blown away by the sheer cliffs, hidden waterfalls, and lush valleys – all of it even more stunning from the water. It’s a view you really can’t fully appreciate from land.
As the sun began to set, dinner was served. The food was delicious, but honestly, the real highlight was watching the sky light up in shades of orange and pink while sipping on a glass of wine. It was pure bliss!
The catamaran was spacious and comfortable, and the crew made the trip even better by sharing fun facts about Kauai’s history and pointing out wildlife along the way. Whether you’re celebrating something special or just looking to relax in paradise, this cruise is unforgettable.
7. Taste your way around Hanalei

Tour Details
Attention all foodies! If you’re eager to sample delicious Hawaiian specialties while exploring the charming town of Hanalei, this walking food tour is a must-do. It’s the perfect way to uncover the best eats in this iconic Kauai town while diving into its rich history and vibrant culture.
The tour takes you to some of Hanalei’s most beloved eateries, where you’ll taste a variety of local dishes that showcase the island’s diverse culinary influences. Each stop is packed with fresh ingredients and bold flavors – I’m still dreaming about the poke bowl we had! And let’s not forget the sweet treats along the way, which were the perfect ending to this foodie adventure.
What I loved most was how much we learned about Hanalei itself. Strolling through this picturesque town with our guide, we got to hear stories about its history, the local way of life, and even tips for the best-hidden spots to check out later.
Whether you’re a food lover or just looking for a unique way to experience Hanalei, this tour is a must. It’s intimate, highly-rated (just look at the glowing reviews!), and absolutely delicious. Just be sure to bring your appetite – you’ll need it!
8. Go hiking

Kauai offers some of the most stunning views I’ve ever seen in my travels. To hike its trails is a real treat, and there are plenty of options for every skill level.
- Nā Pali Coast Trail – The Nā Pali Coast Trail is a 4-mile (6.4 km) round-trip portion of the longer Kalalau Trail. Unless you’re planning a backpacking trip, this shorter version is a great workout with killer views, ending at Hanakāpīʻai Beach. You’ll need a shuttle permit to access the trail, which you can check out here!
- Poipu Cliffs and Mahaulepu Heritage Trail – This 5.3-mile (8.5 km) route starts and ends at Shipwreck Beach and has coastline views throughout. It also pairs nicely with some beach time afterward.
- Wai Koa Trail – Wai Koa Trail is another good family-friendly option. The 3.9-mile (6.3 km) trail has plenty of shade and great views of Hawaii’s flora.
- Sleeping Giant Trail – Finally, don’t let the short Sleeping Giant Trail fool you. At just 1.8 miles (2.9 km), it’s a spicy climb, but the views at the top are absolutely worth the effort!
9. Get an aerial view of Kauai on a helicopter tour

Tour Details
If there’s one thing you absolutely have to do in Kauai, it’s this epic eco-friendly helicopter tour. Trust me, seeing the island from above is a total game-changer! Kauai’s dramatic landscapes are incredible from the ground, but from the air? They’re breathtaking.
The tour takes you soaring over Kauai’s most iconic sights, like the towering cliffs of the Na Pali Coast, the jaw-dropping Waimea Canyon (aka the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”), and lush waterfalls you can only access by helicopter. From your seat in the helicopter, you’ll get a whole new perspective of Kauai’s mountains, valleys, coastline, and thick green jungle.
My personal favorite? The Jurassic Falls – yes, the one from the movie! Seeing it up close made me feel like I was right on the movie set.
What I love about this tour is how eco-conscious it is. The helicopters are designed with quiet technology to minimize environmental impact, so you can feel good about enjoying this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Plus, the pilots double as incredible guides, sharing fascinating stories and pointing out hidden gems along the way.
With panoramic windows, every seat on the helicopter has unbeatable views. Keep your camera ready because there’s plenty to see as you fly over the island. It’s no wonder this tour has so many glowing reviews – it’s truly unforgettable!

10. Go snorkeling on a luxury catamaran

Tour Details
If you’ve been reading along so far, you already know how much I love the Na Pali Coast – it’s one of the most breathtaking places on Earth! But if you want to experience it in luxury, this half-day catamaran snorkeling cruise is the way to do it.
From the moment we stepped aboard, I could tell this wasn’t your average tour. The sleek, spacious catamaran is designed for comfort, with plenty of room to stretch out and take in the jaw-dropping views of the Na Pali Coast’s towering cliffs and lush green valleys.
But the snorkeling stop was the real highlight for me! The crew took us to a vibrant reef teeming with tropical fish, and the crystal-clear water made it easy to spot marine life. If you’re lucky, you might even see a sea turtle or two!
What really sets this tour apart is the little touches – like the delicious lunch served onboard (the fresh sandwiches were a hit!) and the attentive crew who made sure everyone was having the best time. They even kept the drinks flowing from the open bar, making the ride back feel like a party!
Whether you’re looking to snorkel, soak up the scenery, or simply relax in style, this tour combines luxury and adventure perfectly. It’s a Na Pali Coast experience you won’t forget!

Viator is a trusted online booking system for tours around the world! We almost always book our tours using Viator for a couple of reasons:
11. Go shopping at the Historic Kong Lung Market Center

If you’re looking for a fun place to pick up local products and souvenirs in Kauai, make a stop at the Historic Kong Lung Market Center.
This small shopping center sits inside a beautifully restored sugar plantation building, so there’s a bit of history to take in while you browse. It’s an easy place to wander around for a while, especially if you’re looking for something that feels more local than a typical souvenir shop.
You’ll find everything from local crafts and jewelry to thoughtful art pieces that capture the island’s unique beauty. There’s also a natural foods café tucked away here—perfect for a late-afternoon coffee or a sweet treat. Whether you’re in the mood to shop or just stroll and take it all in, Kong Lung Market Center offers a gentle, authentic taste of Kauai’s community spirit.
While individual shop hours vary, the market grounds are open from 6 am to 9 pm every day and free to visit. After seeing the local goodies, you’ll definitely want to bring something home!
12. Visit a chocolate farm

Tour Details
If you love chocolate as much as I do, heck, even if you don’t, this Kauai chocolate farm and tasting tour is an absolute dream! It’s not every day you get to visit a working cacao farm, learn about the entire chocolate-making process, and indulge in some of the best chocolate I’ve ever tasted.
The tour takes place at a beautiful local chocolate farm. As we strolled through the lush botanical gardens, we sampled fresh fruits while our guide shared fascinating insights about how chocolate is grown and produced. I was amazed to learn about the different cacao varieties and how the unique island climate enhances the flavors.
But of course, the best part was the tasting! We sampled a variety of chocolates, each with its own unique flavor profile. From chocolate-covered macadamia nuts to bold and intense dark chocolate, it was heaven for any chocolate lover. The guide even taught us how to properly savor each bite to experience all the flavors – who knew chocolate tasting could feel so sophisticated?
Whether you’re a chocolate connoisseur or just looking for a unique and delicious experience on Kauai, this tour is a must. It’s fun, educational, and a sweet way to spend your day on the island. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you!
13. Visit Limahuli Garden & Preserve

The lush landscape of Limahuli Garden & Preserve is a peaceful oasis tucked into the base of dramatic cliffs on Kauai’s North Shore. It’s the perfect way to round out an afternoon with a bit of nature and a lot of beauty.
Limahuli Garden offers a self-guided walk through ancient taro terraces and native Hawaiian plants, all set against a backdrop of sweeping ocean views. This isn’t just a garden—it’s a living snapshot of Kauai’s history and cultural heritage. As you stroll the trails, you’ll get a deeper sense of the island’s deep roots and how its natural environment has sustained generations of Hawaiians.
Admission is $30 USD per person, and reservations are strongly recommended (make them here) to guarantee a parking spot. If you’re arriving by shuttle, you can also visit without a reservation between 8:30 am and 2 pm.
I recommend taking your time here! Pause to admire the native ferns and fragrant flowers, soak in the views of the rugged cliffs above, and let the peaceful energy of the place wash over you.
14. Learn how to surf on a private tour

Tour Details
Have you ever dreamed of catching a wave in paradise? Kauai’s beginner-friendly surf lesson is your chance to make it happen! Whether you’re a total newbie (like I was) or just looking to improve your skills, this lesson is an absolute must for anyone visiting the island.
Led by experienced local instructors, the lesson takes place on Hanalei Bay’s calm, sandy-bottomed beaches, making it the ideal spot to learn.
The session kicks off with a quick briefing on land, where you’ll get the basics down – like popping up on your board and the best stance to keep your balance. Once you hit the water, it’s all about practice, and trust me, the guides are amazing at offering personalized tips and encouragement.
By the end of the lesson, I managed to stand up on my board (and stay up!) more times than I thought possible. The feeling of riding that first wave is nothing short of exhilarating – I couldn’t stop smiling! Plus, the private group setting ensures plenty of one-on-one attention, so you’ll feel supported no matter your skill level.
If learning to surf has ever been on your bucket list, this private lesson is the perfect way to check it off. It’s an iconic Hawaiian experience you’ll never forget!
15. Visit the Kilauea Lighthouse

Kīlauea Lighthouse, a beautiful national wildlife refuge perched dramatically above the sea. With sweeping ocean views, rugged cliffs, and the striking white lighthouse standing proudly on the point, it’s a scene straight out of a postcard.
The area is a haven for wildlife lovers – keep your eyes peeled for soaring albatross, swooping seabirds, or even the elusive nenē (Hawaiian goose). There are benches to sit and soak it all in, and rangers on hand to share fun facts and local lore. It’s a peaceful, educational stop that captures the wild spirit of Kauai.
You’ll need to book a reservation online before you go. The refuge is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. You can’t currently go inside the lighthouse, but there’s still plenty to see around the grounds.
Give yourself a little time to wander and enjoy the views. It’s an easy stop to add to a day exploring the north shore and a good place to slow down for a bit.
