Crystal River At A Glance

Crystal River is one of Florida’s most unique destinations, especially if you love wildlife and outdoor adventures! But a few things are worth knowing before you arrive, so here are our top tips for planning your visit.
Important tip: Rent a car! Downtown Crystal River is small and walkable, but attractions like Homosassa and Inverness are spread out. Having your own wheels will give you much more freedom to explore the surrounding Nature Coast.
Visit during manatee season if you can: Manatees live in Crystal River year-round, but the best time to see them is November through March, especially in December, January, and February. This is when hundreds of manatees gather in the warm springs to escape the chilly Gulf waters!
Be mindful of the manatees: Crystal River is one of the few places where you can legally swim with wild manatees, but strict rules apply to protect them. You’ll need to observe them passively, which means no chasing, grabbing, or disturbing the animals.
Three Sisters Springs has different access rules: The boardwalk is a great way to see manatees without getting wet, but you can’t enter the water directly from the refuge. Kayaks also aren’t permitted inside the springs during manatee season, although you can still explore the surrounding waterways on a guided tour.
Book your manatee experiences in advance: Swimming and kayaking tours are some of the biggest attractions in Crystal River, especially in winter. We recommend booking ahead to secure your preferred date and departure time.

🐊 Day 3: Wildlife Encounters, Airboat Adventures & Waterfront Drinks
Head to Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park to see Florida’s native wildlife, then enjoy an exciting airboat adventure through the coastal waterways. Grab some waterfront drinks at Crump’s Landing before heading back to Crystal River for your final dinner.

Things to do in Crystal River
1. Kayak around Three Sisters Springs with manatees

Tour Details
If you’re visiting Crystal River, getting out on the water is an absolute must! And we think this clear kayak tour of Three Sisters Springs is one of the best ways to do it. You’ll paddle in a completely transparent kayak, so you can see what’s swimming beneath you. How cool is that?!
The tour lasts for two hours and takes you around Kings Bay, where you’ll explore the beautiful spring-fed waterways with a local guide. And of course, you’ll be keeping your eyes peeled for manatees!
If you visit between November and March, you’ll have a fantastic chance of spotting these gentle giants, as they gather around the warm springs to escape the colder Gulf waters. If you’re lucky, you might even see a manatee swimming directly underneath your clear kayak, which is a true bucket list moment if you ask us.
One thing worth knowing is that kayaks aren’t allowed inside Three Sisters Springs during winter manatee season. However, if you’re visiting during the warmer months, you can paddle into the springs and even enjoy a swim in the gorgeous turquoise water.
We also love that groups are limited to just 10 people, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to ask your guide questions about the manatees and other local wildlife. And don’t worry if you’re new to kayaking, as your guide will show you the ropes before setting off. With over 2,000 fantastic reviews, it’s definitely popular and worth booking in advance!
2. Swim with manatees

Tour Details
If there’s ONE thing you absolutely have to do in Crystal River, it’s swim with the manatees! Seriously, how often do you get the chance to share the water with these adorable gentle giants? And this three-hour snorkeling tour lets you see them in their natural habitat, which we think is a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
You’ll start by meeting your guide and getting kitted out with a wetsuit, mask, and snorkel, all included in the price. Then it’s time to board the boat and head out into Crystal River in search of wild manatees.
Once your captain spots some, you’ll slip into the water alongside your guide and quietly float as the manatees swim, feed, and go about their day. You might even be lucky enough to have one swim right past you! Of course, you’re not allowed to chase or touch them, so this is all about observing these incredible animals respectfully – and that’s how it should be.
We recommend visiting between November and March, when manatees gather in the warm springs in much larger numbers. While sightings are possible year-round, winter gives you the best chance of spotting these gentle giants! Although with over 3,100 glowing reviews, it’s clear this tour is a hit with visitors no matter the season.
We also love the fact that groups are limited to 12 people, so it’s a calm experience that won’t overwhelm the manatees. You’ll even be able to purchase professional underwater photos afterward – what an amazing souvenir!
3. Visit the Crystal River State Archaeological Site

Crystal River might be best known for its manatees, but did you know people have lived in this area for thousands of years? If you’re interested in discovering more about Florida’s fascinating past, we’d highly recommend visiting Crystal River Archaeological State Park.
This 61-acre (25-hectare) historic site was once an important ceremonial center for Native Americans, who traveled here from far and wide to trade, hold ceremonies, and bury their dead. In fact, some of the ancient burial mounds date back almost 2,000 years!
Today, you can explore the site on foot, following paved pathways past the historic mounds while learning about the people who built them. One highlight is Temple Mound A, where you can climb 51 steps to the top for beautiful views over Crystal River. Just imagine how different the landscape must have looked all those centuries ago!
There’s also a small archaeological museum displaying artifacts and exhibits about the site’s history. We’d definitely recommend popping inside if it’s open, as it helps bring everything you’ve seen outdoors to life.
And another bonus? Visiting is incredibly affordable! The park is open daily from 8 am until sunset, and admission costs just $3 USD per vehicle. The museum has slightly different opening hours, so do be sure to check those before heading over.
4. Take a thrilling airboat ride in Homosassa

Tour Details
If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous, we think this airboat tour in Homosassa is an absolute must! It’s a fantastic way to explore Florida’s wild coastline, and let’s face it, speeding across the water in an airboat sounds like SO much fun!
The tour lasts for 90 minutes and takes you along the Homosassa River and out toward the Gulf of Mexico. You’ll race across shallow waters and weave through mangroves, discovering remote areas that ordinary boats can’t easily reach.
But for us, the best part is the wildlife you’ll see along the way! Dolphins are a particular highlight, but you might also spot manatees, sea turtles, ospreys, and other coastal birds. Sometimes, dolphins even pop up to say “hi” and swim alongside the boat.
Don’t worry, though, because it’s not all high-speed thrills. Your captain will slow down whenever there’s wildlife to see, giving you time to take photos and learn about the local ecosystem. You’ll also hear some interesting stories about the area’s history along the way.
We especially love that groups are limited to just six people, so it’s a much more personal experience than a big boat tour. Hearing protection is provided, although we’d recommend bringing a jacket, as it can get pretty windy once you’re out on the water!
5. Spot manatees from a cruise

Tour Details
Want to see Crystal River’s famous manatees without getting wet? This manatee-viewing cruise is for you! You’ll spend 90 minutes cruising around Kings Bay in search of these adorable gentle giants, and it’s a fantastic alternative to snorkeling if you’d rather stay dry.
You’ll board a boat with an experienced local captain who knows exactly where manatees like to hang out. As you cruise through the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, you’ll keep your eyes peeled for manatees swimming beneath the surface and coming up for air. You might even see mother manatees swimming alongside their calves, which is beyond adorable.
And manatees aren’t the only animals you could encounter! The waterways are home to all sorts of wildlife, including turtles, birds, and even the occasional dolphin or alligator. Your captain will also share lots of interesting facts about the animals and their habitat, so it’s a great opportunity to learn more about all of these fascinating creatures.
We think this is a great choice for families or anyone who isn’t comfortable swimming. You still get to experience Crystal River’s incredible wildlife without putting on a wetsuit!
Our top tip for this experience is to bring polarized sunglasses, if you have them, because they make it easier to spot manatees beneath the water’s surface. We also recommend visiting in winter, if you can, because that is when larger numbers of manatees gather in the warm springs.
6. Visit Inverness

If you’ve got a spare afternoon in Crystal River, we highly recommend taking a short trip to Inverness! This charming small town is only about a 20-minute drive away, and it’s a lovely place to spend a few hours exploring.
We suggest starting at the Old Courthouse Heritage Museum, housed in a beautiful courthouse dating back to 1912. It’s completely free to visit, and the exhibits offer a fascinating look at Citrus County’s history. You can even see the restored courtroom where scenes from Elvis Presley’s 1961 movie Follow That Dream were filmed!
Then spend some time wandering around the historic downtown, where you’ll find cute shops, restaurants, and the beautiful Valerie Theatre. This historic theater dates back to the 1920s and now hosts everything from plays and comedy shows to concerts and occasional movie screenings. It’s definitely worth checking what’s on during your visit.
If you want to stretch your legs, Inverness is also a great place to access the Withlacoochee State Trail. This 47-mile paved trail follows an old railroad route through some gorgeous Florida countryside, and you can walk or cycle as much or as little of it as you like.
And before heading back to Crystal River, why not stop at Twysted Vyne for a glass of wine? We love this downtown wine bar, and it offers wine flights, delicious food, and regular live music. Sounds like a pretty good way to end an afternoon to us!
7. Relax on a sunset cruise in Kings Bay

Tour Details
We absolutely LOVE a sunset cruise, and Crystal River is a beautiful place to enjoy one! This 90-minute sunset cruise around Kings Bay combines gorgeous scenery with wildlife spotting, so it’s a fantastic way to round off a day of exploring.
You’ll head out onto the water with a knowledgeable local captain, cruising through Kings Bay and the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge. Along the way, you’ll search for manatees, dolphins, ospreys, and other wildlife that call this area home. And yes, you may spot manatees before the sun goes down!
Your captain will also share stories about the area’s history and wildlife as you cruise around. In fact, the captains are renowned for their knowledge and sense of humor, which we think makes a tour even better.
Then, as the evening draws to a close, you’ll head toward the salt marshes to watch the sun sink below the horizon. With all that beautiful scenery, we’d definitely recommend bringing your camera!
We think this would be especially lovely for couples, but it’s also a great choice for families and wildlife lovers. Just remember to bring a light jacket, as it can get a little chilly on the water once the sun starts going down.
Why We Book Tours with Viator
Viator is a trusted online booking system for tours around the world! We almost always book our tours using Viator for a couple of reasons:
8. Explore the Three Sisters Springs Boardwalk

If you want to admire Crystal River’s beautiful springs without getting into the water, the Three Sisters Springs Boardwalk is the perfect place to visit! It’s one of the best spots in Florida to see wild manatees from dry land, especially during the winter months.
The wooden boardwalk winds around the springs, with several viewing platforms where you can look down into the gorgeous turquoise water. And if you’re visiting between November and March, you might be in for a real treat! Hundreds of manatees can gather in these warm waters during particularly cold weather, and watching them from above is pretty magical.
There’s more to explore here than just the boardwalk, too. The surrounding 57-acre (23-hectare) refuge has over 2 miles of walking trails that take you through beautiful wetlands and past other natural springs. Keep your eyes peeled for birds and other wildlife along the way!
We think this is a fantastic option for families, photographers, or anyone who’d rather admire the manatees without putting on a wetsuit. The boardwalk is wheelchair accessible, too!
The refuge is generally open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with last admission at 3:30 pm. Adult tickets cost $20 USD in winter and $12.50 USD in summer and include a shuttle from the Three Sisters Springs Center.
We recommend visiting on a chilly winter morning for the best chance of seeing lots of manatees. Oh, and don’t forget your camera!
9. Go on a private fishing charter

Tour Details
Did you know that Crystal River is also an amazing destination for fishing? The surrounding waters are home to all sorts of fish, and this private fishing charter is a fantastic way to get out there and try your luck!
You’ll spend between 4 and 6 hours exploring the beautiful waterways around Crystal River with an experienced local captain. Depending on the weather and conditions, you might head into the shallow flats, explore the backcountry, or venture out toward the Gulf of Mexico.
And there’s plenty to catch! Depending on the season, you could reel in anything from redfish and spotted seatrout to snook, grouper, and snapper. Your captain knows the best fishing spots and will adapt the trip to give you the best chance of making some exciting catches.
We especially like that this is a completely private experience, so you’ll have the captain’s undivided attention. It’s ideal if you’re new to fishing and want some expert guidance, but experienced anglers will enjoy it too!
All of your fishing equipment, safety gear, and fishing licenses are included, so you won’t need to worry about organizing any of that yourself. Just bring along some snacks, drinks, and plenty of sunscreen!
And even when you’re not fishing, you’ll enjoy gorgeous scenery along the way. You might even spot dolphins or other wildlife as you explore the river. We think this is a great activity for families, couples, or groups of friends who want to spend a few hours on the water.
10. Explore downtown Crystal River

There’s more to Crystal River than just manatees, you know! We definitely recommend setting aside a few hours to explore the charming downtown area, where you’ll find colorful murals and independent boutiques. We also love coming here to eat our way through the fantastic local restaurants.
Start by wandering along Citrus Avenue, the main street through downtown. It’s so nice to come here, grab a coffee, then walk around admiring the street art and popping into little shops whenever you feel like it. Be sure to keep an eye out for the murals celebrating Florida’s wildlife, as there are some really impressive ones!
Then head to Hunter Springs Park, which is just a short walk from downtown. This beautiful waterfront park has a small sandy beach and a designated swimming area, where you can cool off in the spring-fed water. There’s also a boardwalk where you can take in the scenery and possibly even spot a manatee swimming by!
And when you get hungry, we’d highly recommend stopping at The Crab Plant for some fresh seafood. This family-run waterfront restaurant serves everything from crab and shrimp to locally caught grouper, and it even has its own seafood market. You really can’t get much fresher than that. Just remember that it’s cash-only and closes on Sundays and Mondays, so plan accordingly.
We think exploring downtown is the perfect way to spend a chilled-out afternoon between all those exciting wildlife adventures. And best of all, you don’t need to book anything in advance, so you can slot it in whenever suits you!

You’ll be close to plenty of tour departure points and the beautiful waterfront, so you’ll have everything you need.

It’s perfect for relaxing after a busy day of kayaking or sightseeing, and you can enjoy it even during the cooler winter months.
The hotel also offers a complimentary breakfast buffet, a fitness center, and free Wi-Fi. Rooms typically range from $110–$215 USD per night, making this a great mid-range option with plenty of perks! Check availability and book your stay at Holiday Inn Express Crystal River here!
