The Best Luaus in Hawaii: Which One To Pick

Planning a trip to Hawaii and wondering which luau is actually worth booking? You’re in the right place!

I’ve attended quite a few luaus across Hawaii over the years, and I can tell you that choosing the right one makes a huge difference! The best experiences combine incredible Polynesian performances with delicious Hawaiian food, and they’re also a great way to learn about the islands’ traditions and history.

You’ll find fantastic luaus on Oahu, Maui, the Big Island, and Kauai, but each island offers something a bit different. In this guide, I’ll share my favorite options across Hawaii and help you decide which island offers the right luau experience for your trip. Let’s get into it!

Why Attend a Luau?

If you’re reading this blog, you probably already know that luaus are a cornerstone of Hawaiian culture. And, having attended quite a few of them myself by this point, I can tell you that they’re so much fun! You get dinner and a show, with delicious food and lots of culture mixed in. 

Speaking of which, the primary reason to attend a luau is to learn about Hawaii’s history. You’ll watch super talented dancers perform both hula and fire dancing, which is amazing to watch. A lot of luaus often give you the chance to take part in activities like headband weaving, hand-painted tattoos, and watching traditional cooking demonstrations. I usually attend luaus with my kids, and it’s really something the whole family can enjoy together.

If it’s your first time visiting Hawaii, going to a luau is a must! I mean, you can’t go home and tell your friends and family that you missed out on the chance to attend one. It’s an awesome introduction to Hawaiian culture, but it’s also really enjoyable as a repeat visitor – and I should know, because I attend a luau pretty much every time I’m in Hawaii!

Oahu

Mauka Warriors Luau

I’ve attended several luaus on Oahu over the years, and the Mauka Warriors Luau firmly remains my top pick. It’s the best luau I have been to anywhere in Hawaii because it just felt so immersive and interactive. 

You can opt to include transport from Waikiki, which is what I did to make life nice and easy since we were traveling with kids. On the bus there, our guide even taught us a few Hawaiian words and kept us entertained for the drive! 

Then, when we arrived, we got to participate in lots of cultural activities before dinner. It was so much fun walking around and trying different experiences! We got hand-painted Polynesian tattoos, learned how to weave coconut leaf headbands, and watched the traditional cooking demonstration in an underground oven. This is what really set this experience apart for me, and I think it’s such a great choice for families. 

The buffet was also excellent! But the real standout was definitely the show itself. The performances were incredible, with world-class dancing and storytelling. This was the best fire dancing I’ve ever seen, and my jaw was on the floor when the performers set fire to the ground! 

Seriously, I cannot recommend this luau experience enough. It really does check all of the boxes, and the THOUSANDS of 5-star reviews definitely back me up on this.

Maui

Te Au Moana Luau 

Maui has some fantastic luaus, but this Wailea experience really stood out to me. It’s a step above the rest in many ways, and I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. The venue itself is beautiful, with a big open outdoor space right by the beach, and I was immediately impressed by the setting. 

The food here was a real standout, too. Instead of the usual buffet, this is a three-course, family-style meal, which makes the whole experience feel more personal and high-end. It also ended up being a really nice way to chat with the people at our table. And to be honest, I just appreciated being able to try a bit of everything without constantly getting up! 

As for the performance, it totally blew us away. The MC was great and kept the energy high throughout, while still giving some really interesting historical context along the way. The storytelling was so powerful, and the traditional music and dancing brought Polynesian history to life in a way that felt really authentic and meaningful. The dancers were seriously impressive, and the fire knife finale at the end really cemented this luau as my favorite one in Maui – you just have to go and see it for yourself!

As far as I’m concerned, this is the one to beat. It’s located in Wailea in South Maui, and while parking can be a bit expensive, we just grabbed an Uber, which made things super easy. Big Island

Voyagers of the Pacific Luau

This Royal Kona Resort luau had all the ingredients for an amazing night and is easily my top pick in Kona! It just gets everything right, from the setting to the food and the atmosphere, so it ended up being one of my favorite evenings of the whole trip!

The location is a big part of what makes this one so special. It’s set right on the edge of Kailua Bay in Kona, and the views as the sun goes down are incredible. This is the kind of thing we came to Hawaii for in the first place! Plus, this luau is available Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, which also makes it a bit easier to fit into your itinerary compared to some of the other options.

The food was another highlight. It was a buffet with plenty of Hawaiian staples, so we got to try a bit of everything and then go back for our favorites – mine was the lomi lomi salmon! Everything I had was fresh and flavorful, and there was more than enough variety to keep everyone happy.

The entertainment tied the whole experience together. Between the cultural storytelling, lively dances, and impressive fire knife performance, I was hooked the entire time. If you’re only going to do one luau in Kona, this is the one I’d recommend!

Kauai 

Luau Kalamaku Luau with buffet dinner 

This Luau Kalamaku experience is my top pick for luaus in Kauai because it really does give you the full experience in one evening! It takes place at the historic Kilohana Plantation, which already makes it feel a little extra special, and it’s available on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday evenings.

The evening begins with a lei greeting, and you’ll also get to see the traditional imu roast, where kalua pork is cooked in an underground oven. Then it’s time for the buffet, which includes a generous spread of Hawaiian favorites like kalua pork, seasonal fish, vegetable chow mein, steamed jasmine rice, and taro rolls.

And as if all of that weren’t enough to fill you up, there are also salads, fresh fruit, and desserts like pineapple upside-down cake, banana cream tart, and haupia, which is a coconut pudding. Basically, come hungry!

After dinner, the main performance tells the story of the first Tahitian explorers who journeyed to Hawaii. You can expect amazing hula dancing and powerful drumming, as well as fire poi ball dancing, which is where performers spin flaming poi balls in rhythmic patterns. It really delivers the wow factor, which is what I think most visitors are hoping for from a Kauai luau.

I also love that Luau Kalamaku takes place under a covered, open-air pavilion, so it’s a great choice even if the weather is a little unpredictable. You can even add hotel pickup to make life easy or upgrade to include a ride on the Kauai Plantation Railway.

Which Island is Best for Luaus?

It depends on you! I know that’s a wishy-washy answer, so if I had to pick one place, I’d say Oahu. It has some of the most impressive luaus, so this is where you’ll get dramatic performances with big production value. It’s also a very popular place to attend a luau, so they really know how to do it here! If you want the best food and cocktails, and jaw-dropping performances, Oahu is the place to go. The Mauka Warriors Luau is my personal favorite and a great example of this!

However, if you’re looking for a romantic experience, I’d recommend Maui. There are some excellent beachfront luaus here, and there’s a big focus on culture and history. That’s why the Te Au Moana Luau in Wailea is my top pick and has a gorgeous oceanfront setting. It’s a bit more of an intimate and personal experience, which is great for couples.

Then you’ve got the Big Island, which I think of as the cultural heart of the islands. Luaus here tend to incorporate more traditional elements that some of the other islands miss out on, so it’s great if you’re looking for a more authentic experience. A lot of the performances focus on history, which makes it a nice way to connect to the islands’ past. The Voyagers of the Pacific Luau in Kona is a great choice for this, with lots of storytelling centered around Hawaiian legends and Polynesian heritage.

Last but not least, we have Kauai. This island is more laid-back than the others in every way, so the luaus tend to be less over-the-top and less commercial. They also tend to take place in beautiful natural settings, like botanical gardens or pretty beaches. Luau Kalamaku is my favorite here, and its setting at the historic Kilohana Plantation gives it a totally different feel from the beachfront luaus.

When should I book my luau?

I usually recommend booking 4-6 weeks in advance to make sure you get the experience you want! Some luaus offer multiple packages with different inclusions, so I recommend locking in early to get the best experience. 

Last time my family and I attended a luau in Hawaii, we booked it about two months in advance to be safe. I checked a few days before, and there were last-minute spots available, so all is not lost if you’ve left it a bit late, although the best packages were sold out. 

I always book our luaus through Viator, and most options offer free cancellation and the option to pay later, so there’s nothing to lose by reserving your experience early. Plus, they price match – even better! 

Do luaus include transportation?

It really depends on which luau you’re attending, but generally the answer is “no”. However, Oahu is split. Some luaus offer transport, and others don’t. I prefer to have transport included so that I don’t need to rent a car, and it’s also a lot easier when traveling with kids! Fortunately, my favorite luau includes transportation. 

In Maui, luaus do not include transportation. You’ll need to either drive to your luau or use Uber. If you choose the latter, my tip would be to reserve your ride home in advance, as competition for a car can be fierce at the end of the night! 

Most luaus on the Big Island don’t include transportation, although it’s not usually an issue since most of them are located in Kona. This is where most travelers stay, so getting there by yourself is easy. 

As for Kauai, you usually have the option to add transportation to your tour. For example, Luau Kalamaku offers optional hotel pickup and drop-off, which makes getting there nice and easy. This way, you’ve got the option available, and then you can decide what you want to do. If you need transport, be sure to message the tour operator after booking and let them know.

Where are luaus usually located?

Luaus vary a lot by size and location. You typically get big, theatrical productions that take place in large hotel resorts, as well as more intimate performances right on the beach. It’s worth checking the venue before booking so you can choose the type of experience that best suits your trip.

Should you book a luau for your trip to Hawaii?

Yes, you totally should! This is a must-do Hawaii experience in my opinion.

However, it is a more expensive activity, so do your research and make sure you book a great one. But if you’ve made it this far in the blog, you’re already doing that. All of the ones I’ve listed are highly rated, with fantastic food and fun cultural activities, so you’ll be in good hands.
