After a leisurely morning of wine and olive oil tastings, it’s time to make your way to Heraklion, the bustling capital of Crete. The drive from Chania to Heraklion takes about 2 hours, winding through narrow, often twisty roads that offer spectacular views of the island’s rugged landscape.
If you don’t have a rental car, no worries, the bus is a solid alternative, taking about three hours to cover the same distance. Whichever way you choose to get there, you’ll arrive in Heraklion with plenty of time to check in to your hotel and get ready for dinner.
Dinner – Peskesi
Once you’ve settled into Heraklion, make your way to Old Town for a well-earned dinner at Peskesi. This highly rated spot is the perfect place to dive into Cretan cuisine in a warm, inviting setting.

Full day – Visit the Cave of Zeus and the Lasithi Plateau on a Land Rover safari
If you’re craving a real off-the-beaten-path adventure, day four is the day to dive in! We joined this small-group Land Rover safari, which turned out to be one of the most thrilling experiences of our trip to Crete. The tour departs from Heraklion at 8 am and includes hotel pickup, so you can just sit back and enjoy the ride.
The adventure began at the Aposelemis Basin Reservoir, a scenic lake and dam supplying water to northern Crete. From there, we explored the eerie village of Sfendili, known as “the forgotten village,” where buildings slowly disappear beneath the rising waters. It was an unforgettable sight!
Next, we climbed into the mountains and sped toward the Lassithi Plateau, home to breathtaking views and an eco-park. We got to meet local shepherds, feed the goats, and even watch a traditional cheese-making demonstration—one of the most authentic glimpses into rural Cretan life we’ve ever had.
Later, we tackled the steep steps of Dikteon Cave, the legendary birthplace of Zeus. After the climb, we were more than ready for a feast, and the timing couldn’t have been better.
At a cozy local tavern, we dug into a delicious three-course Greek lunch, complete with wine and, of course, a final shot of raki!
