About Chichen Itza
There are few Mayan archeological sites that are as important or accessible as Chichen Itza. In fact, an astounding 2 million people visit the Chichen Itza ruins annually! It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of the World, so we can see why so many people make the trip to visit.
The ruins’ popularity has grown as tourism on the Yucatan Peninsula has also grown. Chichen Itza is rather close to Tulum, only a 2-hour (149 km/92 miles) drive. Cancun is about a 2.5 hour (196 km/122 miles) drive and Valladolid is a short 30-minute drive away.
Chichen Itza was built around 550 AD, which is an impressive 1,500 years ago! At its peak, Chichen Itza was home to 30,000 residents and one of the largest and most important Mayan cities. The city itself was rather modern, there were houses, roads, temples, and more. During their heyday, the Mayans ruled most of Mexico and Central America, years before European settlers arrived.
No one really knows what happened to the Mayan society. Some theories say that the elite class was overthrown during a civil war, somewhere around the 12th century. When the Spanish reached the ruins in the 16th century, the residents of Chichen Itza were long gone and the structures were covered in jungle overgrowth.
Since the 1800s, archeologists have been meticulously excavating and restoring the ruins. New discoveries are always being made, such as a small pyramid being discovered inside El Castillo in 2016! Every new discovery is like unearthing a clue as to how the Mayans lived so many years ago.
The Chichen Itza site today is still huge, it covers 3.2 square kilometers (2 square miles). The largest structure, El Castillo, a Mayan ball court, and even a sacred cenote have all been discovered within the city limits.
The astoundingly large pyramid structure you most likely recognize from photos is El Castillo. It stands at an impressive height of 30 meters (98 feet) tall. You’ve probably heard that the Mayans created the calendar. It just so happens that El Castillo IS the giant calendar. The temple has 4 sides that each contain 91 stairs, which equals 364, and the temple at the top makes for a total of 365– the same as the number of days in a year! These structures serve as an example of the Mayans’ understanding of the Earth, the planets, and the universe itself!
Mexico has a rich and diverse history, and Chichen Itza is certainly a testament to it! It is a must-see when you’re visiting Tulum!
Why Book a Tour to Chichen Itza?
It is certainly possible to visit Chichen Itza without a guide, many do and love it! But to really understand everything this UNESCO heritage site has to offer, booking a tour with a knowledgeable guide is a fantastic idea. Only then will you get the chance to learn the stories of the people who once called this place home!
The tour gives you an incredible chance to go deeper into Mayan culture and daily life at Chichen Itza. You will hear how they constructed the impressively large structures so many years ago, without the help of modern equipment! There are many carvings, paintings, and murals all around, and having a guide ensures you understand the deep meaning of these pieces.
We also love guided tours because the guides are locals and can offer a unique perspective on the area, and they are usually personable and funny! I’ve visited Chichen Itza once on a tour and once without. I must say, I preferred my guided tour so much that nearly every historical site I visit now, I have to book a guide!
Booking a tour of Chichen Itza is an easy decision, and it really makes it convenient if you’re staying in the nearby tourist cities of Tulum, Playa del Carmen, or Cancun. There are so many tours in Tulum that offer a variety of activities suited to every budget!
So if you’re planning your Tulum itinerary, keep reading to add a Chichen Itza tour to that list!

For $70 USD, you’ll visit Chichen Itza, Cenote Saamal to swim, and visit the lesser-visited Mayan ruins of Coba. The Coba Ruins actually hold the tallest pyramid in the region, which is also named El Castillo.
We really love this tour because it goes to two significant Mayan ruins. You will truly learn so much about the history and culture of the Mayan civilization on this tour!
You will be provided breakfast and lunch, as well as complimentary water throughout the day. This is great because both ruins can get very hot. Keep in mind that the Yucatan state tax for both ruins is an additional $36 USD fee per person and can be paid when you check-in. The $3 USD lifejacket fee is also not included in case you’re planning on swimming.

The next best tour to Chichen Itza from Tulum takes you to Chichen Itza, Ek Balam, and Cenote Hubiku! This 12-hour tour is unlike many on this list because it includes stops at two very different Mayan archeological sites. Chichen Itza is well-known and rather touristy, and Ek Balam is often referred to as a hidden gem!
What is really unique for tourists at Ek Balam is that you can actually climb to the top of some of the structures! This is rarely allowed at ruins sites these days. At the top of the Acropolis, you can see the jungle from a bird eye view, it’s pretty incredible! There are also murals, carvings, and many structures that tell a story about the Mayans who lived there.
This tour will give you 3 hours at Chichen Itza, 2 hours at Cenote Hubiku for a swim, and another 2 hours guided tour of Ek Balam! It’s also a great tour because it is limited to just ten travelers, which gives you a much more intimate experience!

6. Private Chichen Itza Tour
While group tours are great for keeping the price low, sometimes a private tour is the best way to see Chichen Itza! This private tour is only for your group, making this a personalized experience. I love private tours because you get to really know your guide and ask questions about the historic site you’re exploring.
You’ll spend about 2 hours at Chichen Itza, lead around by your knowledgeable guide, and also have some time to explore by yourself. You’ll then head to Cenote Saamal for an hour to relax and refresh after being out in the hot sun at the ruins. Finally, you will go to Valladolid for a full hour of exploring this colorful city. Many tours have only brief stops in Valladolid, so we love that this tour gives you plenty of time here!
All entrance fees, round trip transportation to Tulum, lunch, and your amazing guide are included in the price of $290 per adult. This private experience can be booked online here!

8. Chichen Itza Early Access, Cenote, Tequila, and Traditional Lunch
On this Chichen Itza tour from Tulum, you’ll have the opportunity to experience the ruins with no one else there! This crowd-free tour gives you a new look at the historic site. Your day will also include swimming in a cenote, lunch at a historic hotel, and a tequila tasting!
This tour is for die-hard explorers, as it starts at 4 am! You’ll enter Chichen Itza before the gates open to the public, which is a huge perk as this site can get extremely crowded. This is also a great time to visit, as Chichen Itza gets very hot very quickly! So going early in the morning not only allows you to beat the crowd but also the heat. Your guide will lead you around the ruins for 2.5 hours, giving you plenty of time to learn and explore.
After your morning of exploring Chichen Itza, you will head to Hotel Real del Mayab for a traditional buffet lunch. This hotel is gorgeous and such a unique stop! Your final stop will be at Cenote Saamal for an hour of swimming and tequila tasting! It’s not a real Mexican experience if there isn’t a tequila tasting involved!
This tour includes roundtrip transportation from your Tulum hotel, lunch, tequila, and your guide! You will need to pay the Chichen Itza tax of $35 USD per adult and $5 USD per child, as well as the $3 USD lifejacket rental at the cenote.

You will have a full hour at the cenote before going to Valladolid. You’ll have about 20 minutes to explore the quaint downtown and then have the opportunity to join in the ancient Mayan purification ceremony led by a shaman, called Temazcal. This is such a unique opportunity!

Experience Chichen Itza like you own the place on this private VIP tour. We love that this Chichen Itza tour from Tulum offers a private driver and is just for your small group. That way, you can really control your timeline and see as much as Chichen Itza, Cenote San Lorenzo Oxman, and Valladolid as you’d like!
This tour offers 3 hours at Chichen Itza– much longer than any other tour listed. You’ll arrive early to beat the crowds and have an intimate experience in this magical place. Afterward, you’ll head to Cenote San Lorenzo Oxman, another experience only offered on this tour. This cenote is strikingly beautiful with jungle vines hanging into the swimming hole. You can even swing off of them into the water!
You’ll then head to Valladolid for an authentic a la carte lunch from local vendors in the city square. In total, you’ll have 2 hours in Valladolid. Some of your time will be with your guide, but you’ll also have the chance to explore the adorable shops and cafes.

11. Chichen Itza Night Show
This experience is like none other on this list! The late-night light show of Chichen Itza is truly one of the coolest things I’ve seen in Mexico. The structures are lit up in an array of colors using special projectors, making this already magical place a bit more enchanting.
This light show happens every night, except for Mondays. Chichen Itza truly comes alive with the main event being a 30-minute light show with accompanying sounds. This is projected onto the large Pyramid of Kulkulkan and will go deep into the history of Mayan civilization. Even though the presentation is in Spanish, you can still follow the story and learn so much from the images even if you don’t speak the language.
Tickets are available for purchase before the show from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm, at the entrance gates. Tickets are 630 MXN ($32 USD), and if you make it on a Sunday you can get a discounted price of 300 MXN ($15 USD). The show will begin with a guided tour of the ruins, then as the sun goes down, the lights go up and you can wander through the ruins as you’d like!
You can also book a guided tour that includes a sunset visit to Valladolid, a ticket for the Chichen Itza Night show, and a private cave tour of Nuevo Xcan, plus dinner! That way you don’t have to worry about transportation and get more out of your night.
Note that this tour can provide transportation from Tulum but it is an extra $15 because it is out of the typical pickup range. Otherwise, the price is $381 USD and includes the guided tour of Chichen Itza at night, dinner, caving and safety equipment, and transportation (for a fee).
This is definitely one of the most unique experiences in Mexico. If your plans work out, this is a bucket-list experience!
12. Chichen Itza Total Experience
We love this Chichen Itza Total Experience because you really do get to experience the best of the Yucatan! This tour is private, which means you can travel at your own pace as you explore Chichen Itza, Cenote Xkeken, Valladolid, and Mayapan Traditional Agave Distillery. The slogan for this tour is “live the experience of living in Mexico as a traveler, not just a tourist.”
Your tour begins by exploring Chichen Itza. This is another early start tour, which means you will have fewer people and it won’t be as hot, making the day more enjoyable for everyone. Your local guide will take you on a personalized tour of the ruins, and you’ll have the liberty to ask questions and talk at your leisure on this private tour.
This tour also differs from the others because you’ll be stopping at Cenote Xkeken, which is truly a hidden gem. This was once a hacienda hidden in the jungle, which is where Cenote Oxman is located and it is quite beautiful! You’ll stay here for a traditional a la carte lunch and swimming before heading off to Valladolid. You will have about 40 minutes in Valladolid to check out the historic catholic cathedral or visit some of the quaint shops.
Finally, your last stop will be at Mayapan Traditional Agave Distillery where you will learn about making this agave-based drink and have a tasting. Fun fact: this is pretty much the exact same as tequila, but because it isn’t made in the state of Jalisco, it can’t legally be called tequila! So it is simply an agave drink… that tastes a lot like tequila.
This tour costs $341 USD and includes transportation from Tulum, entrance fees, lunch, and agave tasting! For a jam-packed day of fun, be sure to book this tour in advance!
13. Chichen Itza Deluxe Tour
The final tour to Chichen Itza from Tulum is adequately named the “deluxe tour” as it is quite inclusive! You’ll stop at a typical Mayan village and experience performances and ceremonies with ancient historic roots, in addition to seeing Chichen Itza, Cenote Saamal, and Valladolid!
The first stop is truly unique to this tour alone. You’ll go to Xocenpich, the traditional Mayan village, and be greeted by a shaman-led welcome ceremony. Here, you’ll have lunch and watch a folkloric ballet performance as you dine, then have some time to explore the shops with handmade crafts.
After an hour in the Mayan village, you’ll head to Chichen Itza for a 2.5 guided tour of the impressive archeological site. Your day will end by swimming at Cenote Saamal and visiting Valladolid. In Valladolid, you can attend a shaman healing ceremony if you are a believer in energy and mysticism.
This tour is truly deluxe! Roundtrip transportation from your hotel in Tulum is included, as well as lunch, snacks on the bus, unlimited drinks, entrance fees, and your guide! This is one of the best value tours to Chichen Itza from Tulum at $105 USD.
You can book this deluxe tour here and enjoy your day at Chichen Itza!

Where to Stay in Tulum
Tulum has become such a great vacation spot, and that is largely due to the great places to stay! With so much to do in Tulum, you’ll need a great accommodation to rest up and keep adventuring. There are plenty of options ranging from hip budget-friendly hostels, resort vibes, or anything in between.
For budget travelers, my favorite hostel is Che Hostel. This hostel is just steps from downtown Tulum and has a tropical vibe with gardens surrounding the property. There are lots of events that happen here, including salsa dancing and pool parties! You can get a dorm room here for as low as $20 USD, which is truly a steal considering how nice this hostel really is! They also offer gorgeous private rooms. This can be booked on Hostelworld.com or Booking.com.
XscapeTulum is a moderately priced hotel, that’s super comfortable with huge rooms! It has a great location only a few minutes away from the city center, but it’s off of the main road, so it’s quieter at night. Plus, it has a beautiful pool and garden that feels like an oasis in Tulum! It’s great for couples and families as you can even rent an entire apartment. Prices are really good starting at only $60 USD a night – even in the peak season! But to take advantage of this awesome deal, you’ll want to book online well in advance!
Finally, if you’re looking to make your vacation a luxurious trip, there are plenty of good options in Tulum! Hotel Boutique TerraNova is a top-rated boutique hotel that truly makes your stay like paradise. All the rooms are spacious and have a garden patio, and there is an outdoor pool as well! You can expect to pay at least $300 USD per night for a deluxe queen room.
Another luxury option is Kan Tulum. This hotel is actually built around its own private cenote! These rooms have a unique jungle treehouse design, with gorgeous terraces to see the sunset. You are well located right next to beaches and nightlife. Rooms cost around $300-$400, but will certainly be a memorable experience!
Other Activities to do while in Tulum
- Visit the Tulum Ruins. If you’re reading this blog, you’re likely interested in visiting Mayan ruins. The great part about staying in Tulum is that there are some incredible ruins right at your fingertips! This archeological site sits right on the edge of a cliff overlooking the ocean and was likely a large port town. The largest structure, El Castillo, was a lighthouse guiding those coming in on the shore. Accessing the Tulum ruins is a quick 5-minute drive from downtown Tulum and isn’t quite as crowded as Chichen Itza. You can also book this tour of the ruins for more insight with a local guide and a stress-free visit, as they take care of all the planning – it’s one of the best tours of the Tulum Ruins.
- Rent a bike and explore the city – Renting a bike is a fun and convenient way to explore Tulum. You can see the murals, cute shops, hit a brewery, and even the beach in just a few hours! Renting a bike in Tulum is really simple and very affordable. My favorite bike rental shop is Ola Bike Tulum where you can get a bike for $11 a day! You can even do multi-day bike rentals without returning the bike, making it easy to have transportation the whole time you’re in Tulum.
- Visit Cozumel – Cozumel is a small island off the coast making it a great day trip from Tulum! Cozumel is well known for its white sand beaches and clear water. This is one of the best places in Mexico for scuba diving and snorkeling. Cozumel has the second-largest coral reef in the world, only behind the Great Barrier Reef! There are also more Mayan ruins and villages all around Cozumel that you can explore. To get to Cozumel, you’ll need to catch the ferry from Playa del Carmen. The 45-minute ferry ride is about $20 USD.
- Food tour – While visiting Mexico, a food tour is a must. Not only do they have some of the best food in the world (in my personal opinion), but it is also a great way to experience the tradition and culture of the country! This walking food tour of Tulum will take you to all of the best restaurants and local spots in the city. You’ll experience traditional Mexican dishes, such as tacos, tamales, mole, and dessert! Not only will you get to taste some delicious food, but get to meet a local guide who will teach you all about Tulum!
- Have a beach day – With all the adventuring and exploring you’ll likely be doing in Tulum, a lazy beach day is a perfect activity to relax! Many people come to Tulum for the amazing beaches, as they are some of the best beaches in Mexico. The closest beach to Tulum is Paradise Beach, and the name speaks for itself. You can rent lounge chairs here for $10 and enjoy the nearby restaurants. You can easily get to Paradise Beach by walking, biking, or a quick taxi ride.
Renting a Car in Mexico
Undoubtedly, one of the best ways to get around Mexico is in a rental car.
I struggled to get around by bus and taxi for the longest time. But after renting a car in Cancun in 2023, I never looked back. It allowed me to explore the country without worrying about tours or taxis. It was why I fell in love with Mexico and eventually decided to live here periodically.
I refuse to use local services whenever I rent a car in Mexico. The truth is they sometimes can’t be trusted or come with hidden fees (or costly insurance that doesn’t make sense.) There are even rental car scams! So instead, I use Discover Cars, the company most experienced travelers or ex-pats in Mexico recommend. Read my honest review of Discover Cars here for more details!
The rates on Discover Cars are cheap, too, with the average rental costing around $25 USD per day. Full coverage insurance can be added for an extra $10 USD a day too.
Driving in Mexico also only requires a driver’s license using the Roman alphabet. If yours uses another like Japan and China, you simply need an international driving permit.
Insurance is required, but if you book with Discover Cars and get the full coverage, that’s all you need! Oh, and being over 18 is required, and if you’re over 25, your rental will be much cheaper!
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance!
If you’re looking to save money on travel insurance, we currently use and recommend SafetyWing. We’ve been using their coverage since 2018 and they’ve had our backs when we needed emergency flights and got sick overseas.
SafetyWing is one of the cheapest providers out there and covers everything from medical costs to lost luggage, travel delays, and emergency flights. A huge difference we’ve found between them and other companies is that they let you take out a policy AFTER leaving your home country. We’ve also found it handy that it’s a monthly payment rather than a lump sum, and you can get a refund for unused time.
SafetyWing has helped us out in some scary situations before and their affordable coverage has given us peace of mind. You can read our honest review of SafetyWing for all the pros and cons.
