Where to Stay in Victoria Map
Overview of the Best Areas to Stay in Victoria

There are many neighborhoods to choose from in Victoria, each offering something a bit different.
Downtown Victoria is compact and walkable, or you can make use of the city’s transit bus network, which is reliable and efficient. However, if you aren’t planning on bringing a vehicle or a rental car, you may find it preferable to stay in the downtown, Inner Harbour, or James Bay areas so you can get around easily. Fairfield is a little quieter and more residential, sitting about a 20–25-minute walk from the city center.
Here is a quick breakdown of the best areas to stay in Victoria and a top hotel choice in each:
- Downtown Victoria – Best for first-time visitors – This is the heart of the city, with easy access to restaurants, shops, Chinatown, Market Square, and the waterfront, all within walking distance. Hotel Rialto is a stylish boutique stay with modern rooms, a lively restaurant and lounge, and a fantastic downtown location.
- Inner Harbour – Best for luxury travelers – This picturesque waterfront area is home to the Parliament Buildings, Fairmont Empress, harbor cruises, and some of the city’s best restaurants and views. Chateau Victoria Hotel & Suites is a longtime local favorite with spacious rooms, a rooftop restaurant overlooking the harbor, and an excellent location near Victoria’s top attractions.
- James Bay – Best for a quiet, local stay – This quiet neighborhood offers charming streets, oceanfront walks, and easy access to Fisherman’s Wharf, Beacon Hill Park, and the Inner Harbour. Oswego Hotel is a peaceful modern stay with kitchen suites, a cozy on-site restaurant, and a great location on a quiet street close to downtown.
- Fairfield – Best for historic charm – Fairfield is a leafy residential neighborhood known for its historic homes, waterfront views, and laid-back atmosphere near Beacon Hill Park. Beaconsfield Bed and Breakfast is a beautiful adult-only stay inside a restored Edwardian mansion with homemade breakfasts and a quiet location near downtown Victoria.
Important Tip
Multiple trips to Victoria have taught us that this city doesn’t reward spontaneity when it comes to planning. The good places get snapped up months in advance, leaving the overpriced and underwhelming options for last-minute travelers.
The sweet spot for booking Victoria accommodations is 3-4 months out—enough time to secure good rates but not so far ahead that you’re locking in plans excessively early.
Where to Stay in Victoria
Downtown Victoria

BEST FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS
Pros
- Incredibly walkable to most major attractions
- Excellent selection of restaurants, cafes, and shops
- Great transport links and easy access to tours
Cons
- Can be the most expensive area
- Can be crowded, especially during the peak summer months
- Less of a quiet, residential neighborhood feel
Downtown Victoria is essentially the heart of the city, with easy access to shops, restaurants, and all the main attractions like Government Street, Market Square, and the oldest Chinatown in Canada (a must-visit!). It’s also super walkable, making it a great place to base yourself from if you’re traveling without a car and need easy access to the bus and ferry.
We always recommend Downtown Victoria to first-time visitors and anyone who loves to be close to the action, because there’s just so much to do. You can spend your morning browsing the boutiques on LoJo (Lower Johnson Street), grab lunch at a cafe in a historic alleyway, and be at the waterfront in minutes. It honestly just makes your entire trip so easy!
Downtown also has the widest range of accommodation options in the city, including luxury waterfront hotels, charming boutique stays, and more affordable chains. While prices can definitely be higher here, the convenience and atmosphere are usually well worth it for shorter trips.
That said, Downtown Victoria can feel busier and more touristy compared to quieter neighborhoods like James Bay or Fairfield. During peak summer months, especially, hotels book up fast, and prices can spike. So it’s definitely worth reserving your accommodation early if you’re visiting between June and September.
Still, for first-time visitors who want to experience the energy of the city and have everything at their fingertips, Downtown Victoria is hard to beat.
Victoria Regent Waterfront Hotel & Suites – $$$

If you’re in the mood to really treat yourself on your Victoria, BC trip, you can’t do much better than the Victoria Regent Waterfront Hotel & Suites.
This hotel offers elegant, condo-style suites right on the famed Inner Harbour. The rooms are incredibly spacious, with floor-to-ceiling windows and fully-equipped kitchens. Many suites even come with private balconies overlooking the water, which is pure magic at sunrise!
Location-wise, you’re perfectly situated at 1234 Wharf Street, which gives you easy access to the city’s most vibrant shops, theaters, and restaurants. The hotel also offers complimentary free underground parking (always a plus!) and exceptional concierge services.
In terms of pricing, you can expect prices to start around $205 CAD per night and climb to $685 CAD+ per night for top suites, depending on the season.
Hotel Rialto – $$

If you’re after something stylish without the full-on luxury price tag, we also recommend Hotel Rialto.
This charming boutique hotel brings a bit of Italian flair to Downtown Victoria. The rooms are modern, spotless, and seriously comfortable, with cozy beds and beautiful bathrooms that feel a little extra luxurious. But honestly, the real star of the show is the hotel’s popular restaurant and lounge, which is known for its lively atmosphere and fantastic cocktails.
In terms of location, you’re right in the heart of downtown and within easy walking distance of Chinatown, so you’ll have plenty of great cafes, bars, and local spots right at your doorstep. Rates typically start from around $165 CAD to $410 CAD+ per night, which is fantastic for such a stylish stay in the city center!
If the Rialto is fully booked, another great mid-range option in the area is the BEST WESTERN PLUS Carlton Plaza Hotel, which offers a range of rooms and suites with full kitchens. It’s located in the Lower Johnson district, which is one of the trendier areas in Downtown Victoria for shopping and nightlife.
Swans Brewery, Pub & Hotel – $

If you’re after something a bit more budget-friendly that doesn’t sacrifice on charm or location, Swans Brewery, Pub & Hotel is definitely worth checking out.
It’s housed in a restored 1913 building at the base of Chinatown, and it offers spacious, individually designed suites with original artwork, exposed brickwork, and full kitchens. You’re also close to the Inner Harbour area, so you’re never too far from the main sightseeing spots.
Plus, there’s an on-site brewery and pub with 58 (yes, 58!) beers on tap, which is always nice for a casual drink before heading out for the evening. Rates for this hotel typically start from around $255 CAD to $465 CAD+ per night, depending on the season and room type.
Inner Harbour

BEST FOR LUXURY TRAVELERS
Pros
- Postcard-worthy waterfront views
- Steps away from iconic landmarks and tours
- Excellent selection of high-end dining and amenities
Cons
- Can be very busy with tourists and cruise ship passengers
- Accommodation tends to be on the pricier side
- Restaurants in the immediate area can be expensive
The Inner Harbour is without a doubt Victoria’s most picturesque area, and it’s home to landmarks like the Fairmont Empress, Parliament Buildings, and the most scenic waterfront walkways. Staying here puts you right in the middle of the very best that this city has to offer, and you’ll have easy access to the most popular attractions like whale watching tours, harbor cruises, and floatplanes.
In our opinion, this area of the city is perfect for couples, luxury travelers, and anyone craving the quintessential Victoria experience. Food lovers will also enjoy staying here, since some of Victoria’s best upscale restaurants and cocktail bars are concentrated around the waterfront. So if you’ve been dreaming of fresh seafood with ocean views, afternoon tea at the Empress, or a romantic dinner overlooking the harbor, you’ll have plenty of fantastic options nearby.
Of course, all of this convenience and scenery does come at a price. Hotels in the Inner Harbour tend to be among the most expensive in Victoria, especially during the busy summer season and when cruise ships are in town. Still, if you’re looking for that classic postcard-perfect Victoria experience, it’s honestly hard to imagine a better place to base yourself.
Fairmont Empress Hotel – $$$

If you want the ultimate luxury experience in Victoria, you absolutely must stay at the Fairmont Empress Hotel.
It’s known as “Canada’s castle on the coast,” and it overlooks the Inner Harbour. The rooms are modern and refined, while the hotel itself is home to a fantastic spa, an upscale restaurant, and the famous traditional Afternoon Tea experience that so many visitors come for.
In terms of location, you’re literally just steps away from downtown and all the major attractions. It’s truly a luxurious retreat that will make you feel like royalty!
You can expect prices at the Fairmont Empress to start around $330 CAD per night and climb well above $760 CAD+ per night, depending on the season, which is to be expected for one of Victoria’s most famous hotels.
If the Fairmont Empress is all booked up, The Magnolia Hotel & Spa is another fantastic luxury option that’s just a 4-minute walk to the Inner Harbour. It has everything you’d want from an upscale stay, including elegant rooms, a relaxing spa, and a fully equipped fitness center.
We’re also big fans of the Victoria Marriott Inner Harbour, which is only a 10-minute walk away from the whale watching tours and waterfront attractions. The hotel itself has a beautiful reception area and terrace space, plus an excellent on-site restaurant for easy dinners after a busy day of being a tourist!
Chateau Victoria Hotel & Suites – $$

For our mid-range pick, we cannot recommend Chateau Victoria Hotel & Suites enough.
This locally owned hotel has been a Victoria favorite for years, thanks to its friendly service, spacious rooms, and fantastic location. One of the biggest highlights is definitely Vista 18, the hotel’s rooftop restaurant, where you can enjoy incredible views over the harbor while having your lunch or dinner. The hotel is also home to Clive’s Classic Lounge, a well-known cocktail bar that’s perfect for drinks after a day of sightseeing.
Location-wise, you’re just a short walk from the Inner Harbour, Parliament Buildings, restaurants, and many of Victoria’s top attractions, making it an excellent base for exploring the city.
Another great mid-range option is the Strathcona Hotel, which is less than a 10-minute walk away from the Inner Harbour. This hotel has loads of personality and lots to see and do, including multiple on-site restaurants and bars, a games room, and even a rooftop sand volleyball court!
Quality Inn Downtown Inner Harbour – $

For a more budget-friendly stay in this premium area, the Quality Inn Downtown Inner Harbour is a fantastic option.
This hotel offers clean, modern rooms with handy amenities like microwaves and mini-fridges, which is perfect if you (like us) like to save a bit of money on meals where you can! The location is also ideal, with easy walking access to the waterfront, numerous restaurants, and major attractions like the Royal BC Museum, which is only a 5-minute walk away.
Rates for this hotel typically start around $275 CAD and climb to $340 CAD+ per night, which isn’t too bad considering the excellent location.
James Bay

BEST FOR A QUIET, LOCAL STAY
Pros
- Peaceful, residential vibe
- Close to beautiful parks and coastal walkways
- Still within walking distance of downtown attractions
Cons
- Fewer dining and nightlife options compared to downtown
- Requires a slightly longer walk to reach the city center
- Can feel very quiet in the evenings
Located just southwest of the Inner Harbour, James Bay offers a quieter and more relaxed side of Victoria, while still keeping you close to many of the city’s biggest attractions. It’s super peaceful and picturesque in its own way, with tree-lined streets, charming heritage homes, and the coziest cafes.
Having stayed in James Bay before, we think this area works really well for travelers who want to stay close enough to the action, without being directly in the middle of the busy downtown crowds. You’ll still be within easy walking distance of popular spots like Fisherman’s Wharf Park, Beacon Hill Park, the Royal BC Museum, and even the Inner Harbour itself, but the overall atmosphere is a lot calmer and more residential.
The waterfront along Dallas Road is another major perk of staying in this area. On a sunny day, it’s the perfect place to walk along the ocean and watch the waves roll in. You’ll often see people biking, jogging, or simply sitting on the grass, enjoying the view with a coffee (or, in my case, usually an ice cream) in hand.
Overall, James Bay strikes a really nice balance between peace and convenience. So if both of these factors are a priority for you, it’s definitely worth exploring your hotel options in the area!
Hotel Grand Pacific – $$$

For a luxury stay in James Bay, the Hotel Grand Pacific is a fantastic option.
This elegant waterfront hotel sits right along the Inner Harbour and has a more classic, upscale feel compared to some of Victoria’s newer properties. The rooms are modern and spacious, and if you can, it’s absolutely worth booking one with a private balcony overlooking the harbor; the views are incredible!
In terms of location, you really can’t ask for much better. You’ll be within easy walking distance of the BC Legislature, Fisherman’s Wharf Park, and many of Victoria’s top attractions, while still enjoying the quieter atmosphere of James Bay.
Rates generally range from around $205 CAD per night to $685 CAD+ for larger harbor-view rooms and suites, which is a bit of a splurge but well worth it!
Another great high-end option nearby is the Coast Victoria Hotel & Marina by APA. It boasts Victoria’s only indoor/outdoor pool and a unique 52-slip marina, plus it’s only about a 20-minute walk away from the Inner Harbour.
Oswego Hotel – $$

For our mid-range pick in James Bay, we highly recommend the Oswego Hotel.
It offers everything you’d ever want from a modern hotel (including a kitchen in every room). But what we really love about this hotel is how peaceful it is. There’s even a small outdoor zen garden to relax in, plus an excellent on-site restaurant if you don’t feel like heading out for dinner.
The location is another huge plus. It sits on a quieter street in James Bay, but you’re still only about a ten-minute walk from the Inner Harbour.
Price-wise, you can expect rates to generally start around $170 CAD per night and can climb to $625 CAD+ for larger suites and peak travel dates.
If the Oswego Hotel is full, the Embassy Inn is another excellent mid-range option located nearby. It offers comfortable rooms, and the hot buffet breakfast is a big hit with visitors.
We also recommend the Days Inn by Wyndham Victoria On The Harbour, which is just a 10-minute walk away from the Inner Harbour. One of the highlights here is the on-site diner, where you can enjoy breakfast or coffee with an incredible harbor view.
Huntingdon Hotel and Suites – $

For our budget-friendly option, the Huntingdon Hotel and Suites is easily one of our favorites in the area!
This particular hotel has a distinctly British, manor-like flair to it, and the rooms are super cozy. There’s also a complimentary (and highly-rated) breakfast buffet available daily, with both continental and full English/Irish-style options available.
Location-wise, you’re ideally situated near the Inner Harbour area and just a 6-minute walk away from the Victoria Clipper Ferry Terminal and Parliament Building.
Prices usually begin at around $155 CAD per night and can go up to $895 CAD+ for higher-end suites or peak dates, which isn’t too bad considering how great the location is.
If you’re looking for another affordable option in the James Bay area, the Best Western PLUS Inner Harbour Hotel is just across the street. Here, you’ll find spacious rooms, an outdoor pool, and a daily full breakfast buffet.

Fairfield & Craigdarroch Castle

BEST FOR HISTORIC CHARM
Pros
- Beautiful, leafy residential streets
- Close to Craigdarroch Castle and Beacon Hill Park
- Very peaceful and removed from tourist crowds
Cons
- Further walk to downtown and the Inner Harbour
- Limited dining and shopping options nearby
- May require a car or transit to reach some attractions
If you’re looking for an even quieter and more local side of Victoria, Fairfield is a fantastic area to stay. This beautiful residential neighborhood is known for its leafy streets, historic homes, and relaxed atmosphere that feels worlds away from the busier Inner Harbour area.
One of the things we love most about Fairfield is that it gives you a chance to experience what everyday life in Victoria is actually like. You’ll have no shortage of small cafes and independent shops to visit, and you’ll always be greeted with a warm, friendly welcome wherever you go.
Fairfield is also an excellent place to stay if you love the outdoors. You’ll not only have easy access to the Dallas Road waterfront, which has some of the best coastal views in the city, but Beacon Hill Park is also nearby. Another major highlight is Craigdarroch Castle, which is one of Victoria’s most impressive historic landmarks, sitting just a 20-minute walk away.
We especially recommend Fairfield for couples, return visitors, and travelers who prefer a peaceful home base over a busy tourist atmosphere. While you’re slightly removed from the heart of downtown, you’re still only a 30-ish-minute walk or 10-minute taxi ride away.
Beaconsfield Bed and Breakfast – $$$

For our luxury pick in Fairfield, we cannot recommend the Beaconsfield Bed and Breakfast enough. This adult-only B&B is set inside a beautifully restored Edwardian mansion, and it definitely has a more traditional feel to it, almost like you’re stepping inside your favorite period drama.
One of the biggest highlights, though, is definitely the homemade breakfasts each morning served in the sunroom (what a lovely way to start the day!). The location is another huge plus, as it’s in a quiet residential part of Fairfield but still within walking distance to Beacon Hill Park, the waterfront, and downtown Victoria.
Rates typically start around $205 CAD per night and can rise to $485 CAD+ depending on the season and room type, which is honestly such great value considering how stunning this property is.
For another high-end option in Fairfield, we also really love Abigail’s Hotel, located just around the corner. Similar to the Beaconsfield Bed and Breakfast, Abigail’s is also adults-only and set inside a gorgeous manor-style house, making it perfect for a romantic getaway or peaceful escape.
Amethyst Inn – $$$

Another absolutely stunning option in the area is the Amethyst Inn. This beautifully restored Victorian mansion honestly looks like something straight out of a movie set. It’s elegant and cozy, and the rooms are beautifully decorated with classic, antique furnishings. What’s unique about this property is that most rooms still have an original working fireplace in them, which is just so cool!
In terms of location, it’s located in a peaceful neighborhood just a 10-minute walk away from Craigdarroch Castle (so romantic!). It’s also just a 35 to 40-ish minute walk or 10-minute drive to the Inner Harbour area. Price-wise, rates typically range from $220 CAD to $410 CAD+ per night.
The Craigmyle Inn – $$

For a more budget-friendly stay near Craigdarroch Castle, The Craigmyle Inn is definitely the one to book.
It’s located literally right beside the castle, with some rooms offering castle views right outside your window. The property itself, especially the gardens and lounge areas, is just as stunning as the two luxury picks in this list, and there’s even a communal kitchen you can use to save a little money on meals.
Rates typically range from around $180 CAD to $340 CAD+ per night, depending on the season and room type, which is such a steal considering how close you are to the castle.

Top Activities to do in Victoria

Once you’ve settled into Victoria, there’s no shortage of incredible ways to explore the city and the surrounding coastline. These tours gave us the perfect mix of history, scenery, wildlife, and fun local experiences.
- Go whale watching in the Salish Sea – Spotting humpback whales and orcas on this whale watching tour was such an unforgettable experience, especially with the expert marine naturalists sharing fun facts along the way. We also loved the semi-covered boat and complimentary photo package, which made the whole experience even more special.
- Taste your way through Victoria – This food and history tour was easily one of our favorite things we did in Victoria, combining local eats with fascinating stories about the city’s past. Between the Public Market, hidden alleyways, chocolate, tea, and spring rolls, we were happily full by the end.
- Visit the famous Butchart Gardens – Exploring the colorful Butchart Gardens on this half-day tour was the perfect mix of nature and sightseeing. We loved having plenty of time to wander through the rose gardens, fountains, and walking paths before finishing with a city tour around Victoria.
- See Victoria from a seaplane – Flying over Victoria and Vancouver Island on this scenic seaplane tour gave us the most incredible perspective of the coastline and harbor. Honestly, taking off and landing on the water was almost as fun as the views themselves.
- Discover Victoria’s haunted history – Victoria gets surprisingly spooky after dark, and this ghost tour was such a fun way to hear the city’s creepiest stories. Between Bastion Square, Market Square, and tales of lingering spirits, it was equal parts entertaining and eerie.

Renting a Car in British Columbia

If you’re arriving in British Columbia via plane, then I can’t recommend getting a rental car enough. British Columbia is a large province, and traveling between the best places to visit in BC requires transport. Although you can use public transport on some occasions, this means your trip will not only require more time but more planning.
Car rental in Canada isn’t relatively cheap, but it’s not that expensive either, especially if you get a budget car. The cheapest car with a pick-up and drop-off in different locations is around $100 CAD per day. The price does vary though, depending on the time of year. For car rentals, I use the website Discover Cars. It’s a search engine with lots of deals with good customer service. In fact, I’ve used Discover Cars all over the world, including in Chile, New Zealand, and Australia. Read my honest review of Discover Cars here for more details!
Another popular option is to rent a campervan or motorhome (only for the brave in winter). Using Motorhome Republic, you can search hundreds of deals across multiple companies to pick a great vehicle and the cheapest price. Having a motorhome is a stunning way to see Canada and you can often camp for free or very cheap in the most beautiful places imaginable! Read my tips on using Motorhome Republic here before you book!
And if you’re planning to visit the Canadian Rockies during your trip, we highly recommend Smile Campervans. Based in Calgary, this local company provides compact campervans fully equipped with everything you need for a comfortable and affordable road trip adventure!
In fact, Smile Campervans has actually given us a special discount code for our readers! Use the code DESTINATIONLESSTRAVEL at checkout to get 5% off your campervan rental! Click here to browse availability, prices, and book with our discount code!
AIRALO e-SIM Up To 15% Off With Code “DTRAVEL15”
What’s an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of buying a little plastic chip and swapping it into your phone, you just download it. It connects your phone to a local network in whatever country you’re visiting — no stores, no waiting, and no fiddling with tiny cards.
In simple terms, it’s the easiest way to get data and stay connected while traveling.
We’ve tested a bunch of eSIMs over the years, and after a few frustrating experiences, we’ve found our favorite — Airalo. It’s fast, reliable, and incredibly easy to use. You can set it up in minutes (even my mom managed it solo on her first try!), and the prices are some of the best out there.
💡 Bonus: We’ve got an exclusive 15% discount for our readers. Use the codes:
