Jam Cafe is a laid-back local favorite that’s all about hearty comfort food and good vibes—perfect for kicking off a day of exploring. Just a short stroll from the city’s main attractions, it opens at 8:00 am and fills up fast, so arriving early is a smart move. The coffee is rich and smooth, and the menu leans into indulgent comfort. Think pulled pork pancakes, fried chicken French toast, or a classic eggs benny done right.
Morning – Explore Downtown Victoria
After breakfast, you’re just a short 5-minute walk away from the heart of Victoria—downtown! This walkable district is the city’s cultural and historic hub, brimming with beautiful architecture, iconic landmarks, and cozy side streets that are perfect for a relaxed morning stroll.
Start your exploration on Government Street, a lively stretch lined with boutiques, cafés, and local shops. It’s easy to spend time here browsing artisan goods, grabbing a local coffee, or just soaking up the city’s charm. From there, it’s a quick stroll to the grand Fairmont Empress Hotel and the nearby Royal BC Museum—two local icons you won’t want to miss.
Don’t forget to stop by the British Columbia Parliament Buildings for a free 40-minute guided tour. It’s a great way to learn about BC’s political history while exploring one of the city’s most beautiful buildings. Lunch – Eat at the Parliamentary Dining Room
Once you’ve worked up a good appetite, stop at the Parliamentary Dining Room for lunch. Given how popular the Legislative Building is, you might be surprised that it’s a bit of a hidden gem that lots of visitors miss. However, it’s something we tell everyone to check out, and you might be surprised to learn why.
This is a cozy and charming restaurant where politicians regularly grab a quick bite, but it’s open to the public, too. It’s tucked away inside the basement of the Legislative Building. It offers not-for-profit fine dining, which is certainly not something that you come across every day! You can get a fine dining experience for $15–$20 CAD per person, which is an insane value.
The menu is seasonal, so you can expect things like roasted lamb and wild salmon, depending on when you visit. We ordered two soups, seafood linguine, steak, and a pot of tea, and our bill came to a grand total of $40 CAD for both of us. We couldn’t believe it!
While tourists often overlook it, locals know it well, so it fills up fast. Especially in summer, reservations can book out weeks ahead. As soon as you know you’re visiting Victoria, we recommend reserving a table by calling 250-387-3959. You won’t regret it!
Afternoon – Go whale watching
Just a six-minute walk from lunch, this half-day whale watching tour is the perfect way to spend your afternoon in Victoria. The 12:30 pm departure suits this itinerary best, and the tour lasts about three hours, wrapping up around 4 pm—just in time for a pre-dinner break!
You’ll cruise through the Strait of Juan de Fuca on a semi-covered boat, with the option to enjoy the open-air decks or stay cozy in the heated indoor cabin. Onboard marine naturalists make the experience even better by sharing fascinating facts and stories as you search for orcas, humpbacks, and other marine life.
And if you don’t see any whales? You’ll get a free pass to come back on a different day. Another standout perk is the complimentary photo package, which includes shots of the whales you spot and fun family photos, so you can relive the experience long after your trip.

Breakfast – Cora Breakfast
Since you can set the pickup point for the morning tour to the Empress Hotel—and it’s just a quick 5-minute walk from Cora Breakfast—it’s the perfect excuse to start your day here. Opening bright and early at 6 am, this cheerful, family-friendly spot serves up fresh fruit-topped waffles, hearty egg dishes, and endless coffee refills. Whether you’re in the mood for something sweet or savory, the massive menu has you covered.
Even if your hotel isn’t right nearby, planning around this breakfast stop is super easy. With your tour meeting point so close, you’ll have plenty of time to relax and enjoy a full breakfast before setting off on your next adventure at Butchart Gardens.
Morning – Visit the famous Butchart Gardens
Even if you’re not big on gardening, this Butchart Gardens tour is an experience you won’t want to miss. With over 900 plant varieties spread across multiple themed gardens, there’s something breathtaking around every corner.
Whether you’re strolling through the sunken garden, admiring the rose garden, or snapping photos by the fountains, it’s a feast for the senses—no matter the season. This half-day guided tour is hands-down the best way to experience it.
Kicking off at 10 am and wrapping up around 3 pm, it includes a visit to the gardens plus a city tour afterward, giving you the perfect mix of nature and local insight. You’ll have 2.5 hours to explore the gardens at your own pace, with plenty of time to walk the pathways, relax by the ponds, and even enjoy a tea at the on-site restaurant or grab a scoop of gelato from the Gelateria.
One of the coolest things we learned on this tour? The Butchart Gardens are still owned by the same family that created them over a century ago. It all started when Jennie Butchart transformed a limestone quarry into the now-famous sunken garden—talk about a glow-up! Today, the space also features a carousel and seasonal events like concerts in the park.

After returning from Butchart Gardens around 3 pm, it’s time to indulge in one of Victoria’s most iconic experiences—Tea at The Empress Hotel. This grand and historic hotel has been serving afternoon tea for over a century, and the tradition is just as elegant and delightful today.
Reservations are highly recommended, and you can book easily via OpenTable here. A 3:30 pm time slot is ideal, giving you a bit of breathing room after the garden tour. The experience lasts about 2 hours, offering plenty of time to soak in every detail, from the fine china and crisp white linens to the tiered trays of finger sandwiches, scones, and delicate pastries.
The tea menu is extensive, but the signature Empress blend is a standout. Everything is prepared fresh, with locally sourced ingredients, and the view from the Lobby Lounge overlooking the Inner Harbour adds even more charm to the occasion.
It’s a luxurious and relaxing way to wind down the afternoon before your evening plans begin.
Dinner – Fisherman’s Wharf
After tea, take some time to explore the historic Fairmont Empress Hotel a bit more—this landmark is just as stunning inside as it is from the outside. Wander through the grand halls, admire the classic architecture, and maybe pop into the shops or the beautiful inner courtyard before heading out for the evening.
From there, enjoy a scenic waterfront walk to Fisherman’s Wharf. It’s a leisurely 15-minute stroll along the Inner Harbour and the perfect way to walk off tea while soaking in the golden hour views. As the sun starts to set, this area really comes alive with colorful houseboats, sea air, and the occasional harbor seal popping up to say hello.
When you arrive at Fisherman’s Wharf, grab a casual and delicious dinner at The Fish Store – Seafood Restaurant. This laid-back spot is known for its super fresh, sustainably sourced seafood. Think fish and chips, crab cakes, and wild Pacific salmon served right on the dock—it doesn’t get much more “Victoria” than that. With its relaxed vibe and waterfront views, it’s a fantastic way to wind down your day.
Day 3
Breakfast – Good Earth Coffeehouse
Start your morning with something light from Good Earth Coffeehouse, a cozy and modern café conveniently located downtown. Since today’s all about tasting your way through Victoria, skip the big breakfast—we suggest grabbing a coffee and maybe a light pastry to go instead. It’s the perfect way to ease into the morning, especially knowing there’s plenty of food coming your way soon.
Morning – Explore Beacon Hill Park
With coffee in hand, head over to Beacon Hill Park. This sprawling urban park is one of Victoria’s gems—lush, serene, and full of charming walking paths, ponds, and gardens. Depending on how early you’re up, you can spend anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours here just wandering and soaking up the greenery.
It’s a great way to ease into the morning before your next activity, and there’s something especially calming about watching the ducks glide across the water or spotting the resident peacocks strutting around.
Once you’re ready to move on, it’s time to make your way toward Chinatown, where your food tour begins. It’s about a 5-minute drive, 18 minutes by public transit, or 30 minutes on foot—so you’ve got options depending on your mood and energy level. Either way, the journey gives you a little buffer before the tastiest part of your day begins!
Mid-morning – Taste your way around Chinatown
Chinatown is one of our favorite areas in Victoria—and as the oldest Chinatown in Canada, it’s packed with fascinating history, hidden alleyways, and seriously good food. You could explore independently, but this walking food tour introduces you to local eateries and stories you’d likely miss on your own. Plus, it runs from 11 am to 1:30 pm, so it doubles perfectly as lunch!
The tour begins at MAiiZ Nixtamal with authentic Mexican tacos served on homemade tortillas—a fantastic start, if you ask us! From there, your guide leads you through Chinatown, sharing stories about its architecture, cultural landmarks, and colorful past between tastings.
You’ll also explore Fan Tan Alley, famously known as Canada’s narrowest street. Once associated with gambling halls and opium dens, this tiny passageway is now filled with quirky shops and makes one of the coolest photo stops in Victoria.
The tastings are wonderfully varied and may include South Indian dishes, Thai-style dumplings, a Cantonese BBQ pork bun, vegetarian cuisine, and a Filipino ube cream-filled bun. Trust us, you’ll want to arrive hungry!
The tour continues through Old Town and Market Square before finishing at Block Kitchen and Bar with a local craft beer, cider, or non-alcoholic drink. Exact tastings can change depending on availability, but with hundreds of glowing five-star reviews, it’s clear this is one of the tastiest ways to experience Victoria!
Afternoon – Craigdarroch Castle or BC Royal Museum

If you’re into grand architecture and historic homes, head to Craigdarroch Castle, a stunning Victorian-era mansion filled with intricate woodwork, stained glass, and fascinating stories from the 1890s. Touring this castle feels like stepping back in time and gives you a real glimpse into the opulence of the city’s early elite.
Prefer something a little more immersive? The Royal BC Museum is Victoria’s top-rated museum, offering exhibits on everything from Indigenous cultures and natural history to BC’s colonial past. It’s a great way to dig deeper into the stories and heritage of the region.
Both sites are easily accessible from Chinatown—about a 7-minute drive or a 15-minute ride by public transit—so getting there is a breeze. Whether you choose one or squeeze in both, your afternoon will be well spent diving into Victoria’s fascinating past.
Tour the Craigdarroch Castle
If your visit falls on a Wednesday through Sunday, be sure to include a stop at Craigdarroch Castle, one of Victoria’s most impressive historic landmarks. This elaborate, 19th-century mansion was built by coal baron Robert Dunsmuir and offers a fascinating look into the lives of British Columbia’s wealthy elite during the Victorian era.
The castle opens at 10 am and is best explored at your own pace with a self-guided tour, which takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. Inside, you’ll find beautifully preserved rooms, intricate woodwork, stained glass windows, and sweeping views from the tower—every corner of this place has a story to tell.
Admission is $24.50 CAD for adults, and it’s worth every penny for the deep dive into architecture, history, and the Dunsmuir family legacy. Just keep in mind that the castle is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so if this stop is a must for you, be sure to adjust your itinerary accordingly.

This hotel is so beautiful, we simply had to mention it! Coming here, it will be no surprise that staying at the Fairmont Empress Hotel is one of the top things to do in Victoria. It’s one of those grand railway hotels built across Canada that looks more like a castle than a hotel!
The rooms here are elegant and luxurious – you’ll see why this is where royalty stays when visiting Victoria. Grab afternoon tea, book a spa treatment, or just wander around the gardens. Staying here is an experience! Rooms here start around $350- $400 CAD per night, and you can check availability online here.
The Embassy Inn – $$
Stay in the heart of Victoria’s harbor at The Embassy Inn. If you’re taking the ferry here, this hotel is so convenient with its location right near the docks. You can easily walk around to see the sights nearby and grab the included breakfast before you head out every morning. Rooms here are around $170 CAD and you can check availability and book on Booking.com.
Helm’s Inn – $
For a budget-friendly hotel with space to spare, Helm’s Inn has you covered. This all-suite hotel means you have plenty of space with kitchenettes so you can cook up a quick meal before heading out to explore. Some of the best sights are SO close with Beacon Hill Park across the street and the Legislature and Royal BC Museum only a stone’s throw away. Renting a Car in British Columbia
If you’re arriving in British Columbia via plane, then I can’t recommend getting a rental car enough. British Columbia is a large province, and traveling between the best places to visit in BC requires transport. Although you can use public transport on some occasions, this means your trip will not only require more time but more planning.
Car rental in Canada isn’t relatively cheap, but it’s not that expensive either, especially if you get a budget car. The cheapest car with a pick-up and drop-off in different locations is around $100 CAD per day. The price does vary though, depending on the time of year. For car rentals, I use the website Discover Cars. It’s a search engine with lots of deals with good customer service. Another popular option is to rent a campervan or motorhome (only for the brave in winter).
