Fiji is classed as a single destination, but in reality, it’s made up of hundreds of islands, so deciding where to stay can be really overwhelming! But never fear, because we’ve been to Fiji several times – and even got married here! – so we’re here to help. 

The great thing about having so much choice is that there’s truly something for everyone. You can opt for an easy resort stay closer to the airport or head further out to more remote islands for that classic castaway experience! We’ve narrowed it down to our top five picks to help you find your perfect base in this beautiful archipelago.

Overview of the Best Areas to Stay in Fiji 

Fiji is an archipelago made up of hundreds of different islands, so where you stay really matters! 

Regardless of where you end up, your trip will start at Nadi International Airport on the main island of Viti Levu, which is the gateway for pretty much every Fiji beach holiday. From there, you can either stay on the mainland or head straight out to the islands – the choice is yours! Nadi itself is more of a practical stopover town, so it can make sense to spend a night or two here if you have a late arrival or early departure.

As for the islands, Denarau is the easiest option, as it’s just 15 minutes from the airport. It’s home to nine major resorts and hotels. The port here is the main hub for island transfers, so chances are you’ll at least pass through! You’ve also got the Coral Coast, which sits around 45 minutes to an hour away and offers a quieter and slightly more local feel. 

Then, there are the outer islands, where you go for that remote Fiji experience. The Mamanucas are known for their white sand and clear water, and they can be reached by ferry or speedboat in as little as 15 minutes. The Yasawas are further north, requiring a longer catamaran journey of 2-5 hours, but if you’ve got the time, then these remote, untouched islands are definitely worth the trip.

As for getting around, well, that really depends on where you stay! A rental car is useful on Viti Levu, especially along the Coral Coast. As for getting between the islands, everything is handled by boat or seaplane. It’s always best to book these transfers in advance. Sometimes, resorts will help you do this or even handle it for you, but it’s not generally included in the price of your accommodation, so bear that in mind when budgeting!

• Coral Coast – Best for couples & honeymooners – A quieter stretch of coastline with a more local feel and lots of stunning beaches. Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort is a beautiful beachfront stay with a traditional Fijian style and great facilities.

• Mamanuca Islands – Best for beach lovers & snorkeling – This is where you’ll find that classic Fiji scenery with white sand and crystal-clear water, while still enjoying easy access from the mainland. Denarau Island 

BEST FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS

Denarau Island is easily the most convenient place to stay in Fiji, especially if it’s your first visit. It’s just a 15-minute drive from Nadi International Airport, which means you can go from plane to pool in no time, and the island boasts a strong tourist infrastructure. If you’ve never been to Fiji before and want a stress-free start to your trip, we definitely recommend Denarau Island!

This is where you’ll find some of Fiji’s biggest and most well-known resorts, including the  Radisson Blu, Sofitel, and Hilton. Plus, you’ve got Port Denarau, aka the main marina for island transfers, so it’s incredibly easy to hop on a boat for a day trip or head out to the Mamanuca or Yasawa Islands. This way, you can explore the best of Fiji, and then return to the comfort of a full-service resort at the end of the day – bliss!

The biggest downside of Denarau is that it doesn’t quite have the same castaway feel as the outer islands. It’s more commercial, with less of a local vibe, but if you’re looking for a relaxing and convenient vacation, it’s hard to beat – and it’s definitely our top choice for families.

Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort – $$$ 

Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort is a gorgeous upscale resort in Denarau! It’s set right on the beachfront, with four huge swimming pools, three restaurants, and a swim-up bar. Nothing says “vacation” like cocktails in the pool, am I right?

The resort is just a short drive from Port Denarau, so it’s well located for tours and island transfers. If you stay here, you also get access to a golf course and shared facilities with nearby sister resorts, which gives you even more choice during your stay.

It’s a great pick if you want a well-rounded, hassle-free resort experience! Rooms here usually start at around $350 USD per night during peak season.

If Sheraton is fully booked, Radisson Blu Resort Fiji is another fantastic option nearby, set along the beachfront and close to Port Denarau. It has a more family-friendly feel, with lagoon-style pools and plenty of activities, plus spacious rooms that work well for longer stays.

Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa is also a standout right by the marina, so you’re perfectly placed for island transfers. It’s modern and stylish with a beachfront pool, great dining options, and a lovely spa for a more relaxing stay.

Hilton Fiji Beach Resort and Spa – $$ 

Hilton Fiji Beach Resort and Spa is one of the best mid-range options in Denarau, and it strikes a really nice balance between comfort, space, and value. It’s located right on the beach, with easy access to Port Denarau and the rest of the island.

What we love most about this place is the apartment-style setup. The rooms are spacious, and many come with kitchens and separate living areas, which is ideal if you’re staying for a few nights or just want a bit more room to spread out.

There are also multiple pools, a few restaurants, and a relaxed, easygoing atmosphere that makes it a great all-rounder. Rooms here usually start at around $300 USD per night.

The Palms Denarau Fiji – $

The Palms Denarau Fiji is a great budget-friendly option if you want to stay in this area without paying resort prices. It’s not beachfront, but it’s located right by Port Denarau, which makes it super convenient for tours and island transfers. There are lots of restaurants nearby, too!

The setup here is simple but really practical, with apartment-style units that give you more space and the option to self-cater. There’s also a small pool on site, and the overall feel is relaxed and low-key.

It’s not a luxury stay, but it works really well as a comfortable base, especially if you’re planning to spend most of your time out exploring. Apartments here usually start at around $200 USD per night.

Nadi 

BEST FOR BUDGET TRAVEL & STOPOVERS

Pros

• Super close to the airport
• Great for short stays and catching island transfers

Cons

• Not a beach destination
• Busy and less scenic than other areas

Nadi is the main gateway to Fiji, and chances are you’ll pass through here at some point during your trip. It’s just a few minutes from Nadi International Airport, and it’s also where you’ll catch boats and seaplanes out to the outer islands, so it’s a really practical place to stay.

That said, this isn’t where you come for a classic Fiji beach experience. Nadi is more of a bustling town, and it can feel a bit hectic compared to the peaceful resorts and islands. We think it works best as a stopover, especially if you’re arriving late, or have an early departure or transfer the next day. 

There are still a few things worth seeing here if you’ve got some time. The Sri Siva Subramaniya Temple is a highlight, with its bright colors and intricate design, and the local markets are a great place to get a feel for everyday life in Fiji. You’ll also find plenty of shops, restaurants, and bars around town. 

Overall, Nadi isn’t the most exciting place to stay, but it’s incredibly convenient, and it gives you a small glimpse into local life before heading off to the islands.

Ramada Suites by Wyndham – $$$

Ramada Suites by Wyndham is one of the most upscale places to stay in Nadi, and you can definitely feel that as soon as you arrive. It’s located right on Wailoaloa Beach, with a rooftop restaurant and bar that’s perfect for sunset drinks. It’s the ideal spot for a relaxed evening after a long travel day!

What makes this hotel stand out is the apartment-style setup. All rooms come with full kitchens, including a fridge, stove, dishwasher, and even a washing machine and dryer, so it’s ideal if you want a bit more space or you’re staying for a few nights. You can choose from studios up to two-bedroom apartments, which also makes it a great option for families.

It’s just a 15-minute drive from the airport, so a lot of people stay here before or after a flight, or ahead of heading out to the islands. It’s comfortable, convenient, and feels a step up from most options in this area. Rooms here usually start at around $220 USD per night.

If Ramada is sold out for your travel dates, Crowne Plaza Fiji Nadi Bay Resort & Spa is another great option nearby, set right along the beachfront at Wailoaloa. It has a modern resort feel, with multiple pools, restaurants, and plenty of space to relax before or after your island travels.

Wyndham Garden – $$

Wyndham Garden is a great option in Nadi, especially if you want something modern and convenient. It’s located just a short drive from the airport, which makes it a really easy choice for a quick stopover.

The hotel has a clean, contemporary feel, with comfortable rooms and a small pool area to relax by. There’s also an on-site restaurant, and the overall setup is simple but reliable, which is exactly what you want for a short stay. It’s not a luxury experience, but it’s a very pleasant, stress-free stay! Rooms here usually start at around $160 USD per night.

A top stay if you want to be near the airport, Tanoa International Hotel is set within lush tropical gardens. It has a more traditional resort feel, with a large pool and tennis courts on offer.

Hibiscus Suites And Residences is another good alternative, a little further from the airport, but closer to shops and restaurants. It offers spacious, apartment-style rooms with kitchens, which is ideal if you want a bit more flexibility during your stay.

Fiji Gateway Hotel – $

Fiji Gateway Hotel is one of the most convenient places to stay in Nadi, especially if you’ve got an early flight or a late arrival. It’s located directly opposite the airport, so you can literally walk there – how easy is that?

The hotel has a relaxed, slightly retro feel, with simple but comfortable rooms. There are also two pools, a restaurant, and even a waterslide, which is a fun touch if you’re traveling with kids. It’s not fancy, but it does exactly what you need it to do, and it’s great value for money. Rooms here usually start at around $90 USD per night.

If Fiji Gateway Hotel is fully booked, we also love Smugglers Cove Beach Resort & Hotel. It’s just a short drive away, on Wailoaloa Beach, and it has a fun social vibe with an awesome beachfront bar and restaurant.

Or to be closer to the airport, Tokatoka Resort Hotel is another fun place to stay with waterslides that kids will love. It also offers a free airport shuttle, which is always a bonus!

Coral Coast 

BEST FOR COUPLES & HONEYMOONERS

Pros

• Quieter and more relaxed than Denarau
• Beautiful scenery with beaches and lush greenery
• Amazing marine life

• Further from the airport (around 45–60 minutes)
• Fewer resort and dining options than Denarau

The Coral Coast is a beautiful stretch of coastline on the southern side of Viti Levu, and it’s a great choice if you’re looking for a slower and more relaxed stay in Fiji. It sits about 45 minutes to an hour from Nadi, so it’s still easy to reach, but it feels a world away from the busier resort areas.

This part of Fiji is known for its mix of mid-range and luxury resorts, many of which are set right on the beach with incredible views. But what we really like about the Coral Coast is that it feels a bit more authentic! As you explore, you’ll get to pass through small villages and glimpse local life along the roadside. It really gave us a better sense of the island beyond the big resorts!  

There’s also plenty to do if you want to get out and explore. You’ve got access to coral reefs for snorkeling, plus nearby attractions like Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park and the Sigatoka River, where you can take boat tours inland. All in all, we think the Coral Coast is perfect for couples or honeymooners who want a more peaceful, scenic base without heading too far off the grid.

Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay – $$$ 

Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay is one of the most beautiful resorts on the Coral Coast, and it’s perfect if you’re after something a bit more special. It’s set around a stunning lagoon rather than directly on the ocean, which gives it a really unique and peaceful feel.

This resort is well known for its overwater bures, which truly elevate it to bucket-list status. We love how this place is super polished, but still incorporates lots of nods to authentic Fijian culture. There are six restaurants on site and fun activities like yoga classes and water sports, plus a spa and multiple swimming pools. Basically, it has everything you could want – and more! 

Rooms here usually start at around $450 USD per night during peak season.

If the Marriott is fully booked, the Shangri-La Yanuca Island is another fantastic option nearby, set on its own private island along the Coral Coast. It has a traditional resort feel, with multiple beaches, restaurants, and activities that make it a great all-rounder.

InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa is another standout for honeymooners in a stunning beachfront location along Natadola Bay. It offers a luxurious, contemporary feel, with beautiful rooms, a large infinity pool, and one of the best beaches on the main island.

Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort – $$ 

Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort is a fantastic choice if you want that Fiji beach feel without heading out to the outer islands. It’s set right along the Coral Coast, so you can get here easily by road while still enjoying a beautiful stretch of beach.

There’s loads going on here, which makes it a really fun place to stay. You’ve got two great pools, multiple restaurants, sunset bars, and even a kids’ club if you’re traveling as a family. One of our favorite things was the snorkeling right in front of the resort, as it was such an easy way to experience Fiji’s marine life without needing to book a tour! 

Another bonus is the location. You’re not completely cut off, as you might be if on a private island, and there are a few local restaurants nearby if you want to mix things up. Rooms here usually start at around $220 USD per night.

If Outrigger isn’t available for your dates, The Warwick Fiji is another great option nearby, set right on the beachfront with a similar resort-style feel. It has multiple restaurants, pools, and activities – what more could you need?

The Naviti Resort is also a good backup along the Coral Coast, with a more laid-back atmosphere and all-inclusive options available. It offers a wide range of activities, spacious rooms, and easy beach access.

Bedarra Beach Inn – $ 

Bedarra Beach Inn is a lovely little hidden gem on the Coral Coast, and it’s perfect if you’re after something more relaxed and personal. It’s set right across from the beach, so you’ve got easy access to the water without the big resort crowds.

This place has a much more intimate, boutique feel, with friendly service that really stands out. There’s a small pool, a restaurant on site, and a really laid-back atmosphere that makes it easy to switch off. It’s not flashy, but it’s charming and comfortable, not to mention great value for money! Rooms here usually start at around $160 USD per night.

Set on a small private island just off the Coral Coast, Likuri Island Resort Fiji is another great option nearby. It offers a more rustic, back-to-nature experience, with beachfront bures and an unplugged vibe.

Fiji Hideaway Resort & Spa is also a solid and affordable alternative right along the Coral Coast, with a beachfront setting and easy access to snorkeling on the nearby reef. It has a more traditional resort setup, with multiple pools, restaurants, and plenty of space to unwind!

Mamanuca Islands 

BEST FOR BEACH LOVERS & SNORKELING

The Mamanuca Islands are what most people picture when they think of Fiji. We’re talking white sand beaches, turquoise water, and palm trees swaying in the breeze. They’re a group of around 20 islands just off the coast from Port Denarau, and you can get here by ferry or speedboat in as little as 15 minutes.

What we love about the Mamanucas is how easy they are to reach without sacrificing that “tropical island” feel. You can be sipping a cocktail on the beach not long after landing, which is pretty hard to beat! The water here is incredibly clear, which makes it one of the best spots in Fiji for snorkeling. There are so many coral reefs just offshore, which are teeming with marine life, and we’ve had so much fun exploring them over the years.

There’s also a good mix of resorts across the islands, from more social, budget-friendly stays to upscale, private escapes. Some islands are home to just one resort, which gives them a more exclusive feel! We really think that the Mamanucas are perfect if you want that classic Fiji experience without spending hours getting there.

Sheraton Resort & Spa – $$$

Sheraton Resort & Spa is a fantastic luxury option in the Mamanuca Islands, especially if you want that classic Fiji experience with a bit of extra comfort. It’s set right on the beachfront, with the white sand and crystal-clear water that these islands are known for.

The resort is just gorgeous, with spacious rooms, multiple restaurants, and a great pool area to unwind in. There are also plenty of activities on offer, from snorkeling to cultural experiences, so it’s easy to fill your days without even leaving the resort.

Plus, you’ve got the option to go all-inclusive, which we love on vacation! Rooms here usually start at around $400 USD per night.

If Sheraton isn’t your style, Mana Island Resort & Spa is another great option nearby, set on a private island with multiple beaches and easy access to snorkeling spots. It offers a more traditional island feel, with beachfront bures and a wide range of activities.

Meanwhile, Lomani Island Resort & Spa is a lovely adults-only alternative, perfect for couples looking for something quieter. It has a more intimate, boutique feel, with beachfront villas, a peaceful atmosphere, and a strong focus on relaxation, so we think it’s an ideal honeymoon destination!

Beachcomber Island Resort – $$ 

Beachcomber Island Resort is one of the most popular stays in the Mamanuca Islands, and it’s a great choice if you want a fun, social island experience with that classic Fiji backdrop. It’s located on its own little island within a marine sanctuary, so the snorkeling here is next level! You’ve got super clear water and plenty of marine life right off the beach.

There’s a really lively atmosphere here compared to some of the more secluded resorts, with activities like kayaking, windsurfing, and even traditional Fijian shows in the evenings. It’s so much fun, and you can get here via the Yasawa Flyer ferry from Port Denarau, which takes around 2 hours, so it’s still fairly easy to reach. Rooms here usually start at around $200 USD per night.

Funky Fish Beach & Surf Resort – $

Funky Fish Beach & Surf Resort is one of the most budget-friendly options in the Mamanuca Islands, and we love it because it delivers that classic island experience without costing a fortune. It’s set right on the beach, so you’ve got direct access to the sand and some really good snorkeling spots just offshore.

The vibe here is super relaxed and a bit more rustic compared to the bigger resorts, which we actually think adds to the charm. There’s a small pool, a beachfront restaurant, and a laid-back, social atmosphere that makes it easy to meet other travelers.

It’s not luxury, but it’s fun and friendly, and it truly feels like a remote island escape. Rooms here usually start at around $190 USD per night.

Yasawa Islands

BEST FOR AN OFF-THE-BEATEN-TRACK ADVENTURE

• Incredibly scenic
• Amazing snorkeling and diving

• Longer travel time to reach (2–5 hours)
• Fewer luxury options and limited infrastructure

The Yasawa Islands are where you go if you want to experience a more raw and untouched side of Fiji! This chain of volcanic islands stretches north of the Mamanucas, and getting here does take a bit more effort. The catamaran journey from Port Denarau takes anywhere between 2 and 5 hours, but the fact that these islands are so remote is what keeps them feeling so special. We definitely think it’s worth the extra time, as long as you’re not pinched for time in Fiji.

What we love about the Yasawas is how unspoiled everything feels. You won’t find big resort chains here. Instead, the islands are home to smaller properties and quieter beaches, which means a much slower pace of life. We loved coming here and being able to properly switch off. 

There’s plenty to explore, too, so although this place is quiet, you can certainly keep yourself busy! There are lots of vibrant coral reefs and plenty of pristine beaches where you’ll hardly see another soul! And of course, visiting the famous Sawa-i-Lau caves is a must. We really enjoyed visiting local villages, too, because it was so cool to get a glimpse into traditional Fijian life.

Navutu Stars Resort – $$$ 

Navutu Stars Resort is one of the most special places to stay in the Yasawa Islands – and therefore all of Fiji! It’s a dream come true for honeymooners, as this place epitomizes peace and romance. It’s set on a remote island and only has nine beachfront bures, so the whole experience feels very secluded! 

Every bungalow sits right by the water, so you’re never far from the beach, and there are plenty of complimentary activities to keep you busy if you feel like doing more than just lounging around. There’s also a beautiful pool, a great on-site restaurant, and a spa, of course! 

One of the standout experiences here is the option to have dinner served on your private patio, complete with candlelight. It’s a bit of a splurge, but definitely worth doing at least once! Bures here usually start at around $350 USD per night, including breakfast.

If Navutu Stars is all booked up, Coconut Beach Resort is another great option nearby, set on a quiet stretch of beach with a similarly intimate feel. It offers beachfront bures and personalized service, with plenty of privacy. 

Blue Lagoon Beach Resort is also a fantastic location in the Yasawas, known for its stunning location and excellent snorkeling. It has a slightly more social vibe, so it works well if you want a luxury stay but prefer to have group activities on offer and like to meet new people.

Octopus Resort – $$

Octopus Resort is one of the best options in the Yasawa Islands, and it’s a great pick if you want that Robinson Crusoe feel without going too basic. It’s set right on a stunning stretch of beach, with soft white sand and some of the best snorkeling in the area just offshore.

What we love about this place is the balance. It still feels relaxed and a bit off-the-grid, but you’ve got comfortable villas and bungalows and beachfront dining. There are also plenty of activities on offer, from snorkeling trips to cultural experiences, so you can do as much or as little as you like.

Plus, the hotel can arrange transfers to and from the airport for you, which makes life much easier! Rooms here usually start at around $200 USD per night.

We also think that Paradise Cove Resort is a fantastic option if you’re looking for a backup. It feels modern and well-maintained with lots of classic Fijian touches, plus two restaurants and a spa on site.

Barefoot Manta Island Resort is another great alternative, especially if you’re keen on snorkeling or diving! It’s known for its manta ray encounters (in season), and has a more rustic, eco-friendly vibe that fits the Yasawa Islands very well. 

Mantaray Island Resort – $ 

Mantaray Island Resort is one of the best-value stays in the Yasawa Islands, and we love it because it offers a remote island experience for less! It boasts a sleek infinity pool perched over the ocean, and Boho chic treehouse bures that are both adorable and very well-maintained. This may be our budget pick but make no mistake, it doesn’t skimp on comfort! 

And if you want to save even more money, there are dorm beds available, so it’s an amazing option for solo travelers and groups of friends. What really makes this place stand out, though, is the snorkeling and diving. There are dozens of dive sites nearby, and the resort is especially famous for its manta ray encounters (hence its name!), which you’ve got a good chance of experiencing in season.

Treehouse bures here usually start at around $130 USD per night in peak season, while a bunk in a dorm costs around $70 USD.

Top Activities to do in Fiji

While it’s sooo tempting to sit back and spend all of your time relaxing at the beach, there’s actually a ton of other fun things to do in Fiji as well! Taking part can be an amazing way to get to know more about the culture and have a blast while you’re doing so.

Here are a few of our personal favorite activities in Fiji that never fail to put a smile on our faces:

• Take an authentic Fijian day cruise – This authentic Fijian day cruise is easily one of the most fun and well-rounded experiences you can have in Fiji! You’ll head out to remote islands where you can snorkel in crystal-clear water, relax on quiet beaches, and take part in traditional Fijian activities along the way. It’s such a great mix of culture and adventure!

• Try Kava – Now, Kava isn’t exactly a drink you try for the taste, but as a way of getting to learn more about Fijian culture, you can’t beat going to a Kava ceremony! It’s made from a ground-up plant root and is generally a substitute for alcohol (which is super expensive in Fiji). Some hotels and resorts occasionally put on a Kava ceremony, but if that’s not the case, you can also pay to go on a village tour and try Kava there.

• Go snorkeling – A trip to Fiji wouldn’t be complete without also exploring its incredible underwater world. In fact, Fiji is world-renowned for scuba diving and snorkeling! From the brightly colored coral to the beautiful fish and sharks (yup, sharks!), there’s so much to see and explore down in the big blue. This day cruise to Nadi Tivua Island includes tons of chances to snorkel, with round-trip transfers from hotels in Nadi, Denarau, or the Coral Coast.

• Visit the mud pools – If you’re like me, when you hear of an all-natural day spa, you think of three words – “Sign me up!” The Sabeto Mud Pools and Hot Springs are located just on the outskirts of Nadi and are the best place to give yourself a mud bath that you totally didn’t know you needed. Entry is about $20 FJD (about $9 USD) per person, or you can book yourself onto a multi-stop sightseeing tour that stops off here.

• Experience Fiji after dark – Whether you’re enjoying a traditional Fijian Kava ceremony, watching a fire show, or simply stargazing from the shore, the nights here are nothing short of enchanting! This magical 4-hour Fiji night tour includes fire dances, a Meke performance, as well as a visit to a local village to take part in a Kava ceremony.
