A trip to Athens isn’t complete without visiting the Acropolis, one of the most iconic ancient sites in the world. In fact, if you only do one thing while you’re here, visiting the Acropolis should probably be it. 

Having visited the Acropolis myself, I can tell you that a guided tour is a must to truly appreciate it! With so many options available, the choice can be overwhelming, but don’t worry because I’ve broken down the best Acropolis tours for you here so that you can get the most out of your visit to this amazing historic site.

1. Visit the Acropolis, Parthenon, and Acropolis Museum

Of all the Acropolis tours in Athens, this half-day tour gets my vote! I booked this half-day tour for my very first day in the city, and it was one of the highlights of my entire trip. It’s easily my top pick for anyone wanting to dig into the Acropolis’ history!

Our guide was an archaeologist with 10 years of study behind her, and she was a fountain of knowledge! We learned everything from the rivalry between Athens and Sparta to how the ancient Greeks built the Parthenon in just 8 years (its restoration, meanwhile, has been going on for over 50 years!).

Seeing the Parthenon up close was incredible, but the views over the Odeon of Herodes Atticus were another highlight. It’s a beautiful ancient theater, and our guide really brought the history of the complex to life.

The tour includes the Acropolis Museum, which I found just as fascinating. One of my favorite exhibits showed how ancient Greek statues evolved over time, and I was amazed to learn that conservators use tattoo removal lasers to clean them! There’s a Lego model of the Acropolis, too, and once the guided part ends, you can head downstairs to see the ancient ruins found during the museum’s construction.

I did this tour on my first day in Athens, and I truly couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to the city… and the thousands of glowing reviews suggest I’m not alone!

Athens is basically a pilgrimage site for Greek mythology fans, so if you can’t get enough of gods, battles, and betrayals, you absolutely cannot pass up the chance to explore the city on this top-rated mythology tour! Most Acropolis tours focus on history, but this one weaves in legends and ancient Greek culture, bringing the ruins to life through the stories behind them.

And you won’t just visit the Acropolis, either. Your guide will also take you to the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Ancient Agora to hear the epic stories behind each stop. There’s the battle between Athena and Poseidon for the city (which is how Athens got its name, and it’s a great one to hear on the very rock where it supposedly happened), plus the myth of Hephaestus and the birth of Erichthonius. For me, a story like that makes a site far more memorable than dates and facts alone!

There’s a 2- and 4-hour version of this tour, but I’d definitely recommend the latter. The 2-hour tour will only take you to the Acropolis if you’re short on time, but the stories at the other sites are definitely worth hearing. Plus, it’s a convenient way to tick off three of Athens’ big hitters in one go!

This half-day tour is one of the most popular and best-reviewed Acropolis tours in Athens, and it’s easy to see why. You can customize it to get the experience you want, whether you just want to explore the Acropolis itself with your guide or visit the museum afterwards, too. 

You’ll see the Parthenon, Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Nike and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. In my opinion, the Acropolis is one of those places where a guide really earns their keep! Without one, it’s just a pile of (very impressive) ancient stones, but with someone explaining it all, the history really comes alive.

Pro tip: choose the option that includes entry fees. It’s way more convenient, as ticket lines at the gates can get long, and you get skip-the-line access, which is a huge perk! The queues to get up the hill can be big, and I think a guide makes the whole thing far less overwhelming. You can also upgrade to include the Acropolis Museum, which is well worth it for the incredible statues and artifacts that once belonged to these ancient structures.

The tour doesn’t include lunch or hotel pick-up, which is exactly how it keeps the price down. If you want a well-paced, informative, and affordable way to see the Acropolis, this is a fantastic choice, and with thousands of 5-star reviews, it’s clear that I’m not the only one who thinks so!

4. Private Athens city tour, including the Acropolis

If you want to explore the Acropolis without being tied to a big group, this full-day private tour is a fantastic option! Having a private driver means you can enjoy Athens’ incredible ancient sites at your own pace, without worrying about keeping up with a group or figuring out how to get between attractions. And trust me, Athens can get pretty hectic, so having someone take care of the logistics is a huge bonus!

I did the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum in one go, and let me tell you, it’s a LOT to take in! I was pretty exhausted by the end, so I think this shorter tour is also a great option if you’re looking for a more relaxed sightseeing experience.

What really sets this tour apart is that it’s led by a licensed archaeologist, making it perfect for history buffs who want more than just surface-level information. As you explore the Parthenon, Propylaia, Temple of Athena Nike, and Erechtheion, you’ll learn all about Greek architecture, mythology, and the significance of each structure.

You’ll also hear about the Acropolis’ role in ancient Athenian society, how it survived wars and looting over the centuries, and the ongoing restoration efforts. There’s so much history packed into this one site, and having an expert explain it all makes a huge difference!

You can also choose to include skip-the-line entry tickets when booking, which I’d definitely recommend. The queues can get pretty long, so having your tickets sorted in advance makes things much smoother.

Looking for more fun things to do in Athens? There’s plenty to keep you busy beyond the Acropolis! I was pretty history-ed out after exploring the Acropolis and its museum, so I definitely recommend mixing up your sightseeing with some different activities. Here are a few more ways to make the most of your time in Athens!

• Go on a food tour – Greek food is AMAZING, and a food tour is one of the best ways to discover the local cuisine. I had the best time gorging myself on Greek specialties on this food tour at spots I would otherwise have walked straight past. Just make sure you arrive hungry!

• Spend a day on the islands – You don’t have to travel all the way to Santorini or Mykonos to enjoy some Greek island magic! This full-day cruise takes you to Agistri, Moni, and Aegina, where you can swap the busy streets of Athens for turquoise waters and beautiful island scenery. What a way to spend a day!

• See the Temple of Poseidon at sunset – If you thought the Acropolis was impressive, wait until you see another ancient Greek temple perched above the sea! This sunset tour takes you to Cape Sounion to see the Temple of Poseidon at golden hour. It was one of the most incredible sunsets I’ve ever seen, so get ready for your jaw to hit the floor.

• Take a scenic bike tour of Athens – If you’re short on time, this guided bike tour is a fun way to cover more ground while still enjoying some open-air exploration. You can choose a regular bike or save your energy with an e-bike as you cycle past Athens’ famous landmarks.

• Take a day trip to Meteora – For something completely different, this full-day tour takes you from Athens to the incredible monasteries of Meteora, which sit atop enormous rock pillars. You’ll visit three monasteries, see the historic hermit caves, and stop for lunch in a local village. It’s a long day, but the scenery looks absolutely unreal!

Luxury – $$$

If you’re looking for a luxury stay, Electra Metropolis is the best option. Located in central Athens, you’re meters from the top city and historic sights. The hotel provides the finest quality, from the rooftop infinity pool to its atrium and fresh food restaurants. You can expect the same high-class luxuries in the rooms, whether you have a classic double room or an Acropolis view suite.

You don’t have to break the bank to get stunning views from your bed! The Elia Ermou Athens Hotel is a moderately priced option with modern and comfortable rooms and a fantastic location. Budget – $

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly stay that still feels fun and central, YellowSquare Athens is a great choice. It has a social feel without being a full-on party hostel, and there’s a big lounge downstairs with beanbags, a co-working space, and a yoga/workout studio, but the best part was definitely the rooftop bar, which had amazing views of the Acropolis!
