As wildlife lovers, we couldn’t pass up the chance to cruise along Madeira’s southern coast on this dolphin and whale-watching cruise! We loved that it’s eco-friendly, using a silent catamaran to minimize disturbance to marine life—better for the ecosystem and better for spotting wildlife!
Lounging on the deck, we soaked in the ocean breeze while the crew shared fascinating insights about the region’s rich marine life. Not long after setting sail, we spotted a pod of playful bottlenose dolphins gliding through the waves.
Then came the real highlight—a group of majestic pilot whales cruising alongside us. Seeing them up close was unforgettable!
Beyond the wildlife, the scenery was just as spectacular. We sailed past Cabo Girão, the world’s second-tallest sea cliff, and even stopped for a quick swim in the crystal-clear waters below. Then, we cruised past the charming fishing village of Câmara de Lobos, where we spotted colorful boats bobbing in the scenic bay. It was a scene straight out of a postcard!
As we sailed back towards Funchal, we passed the iconic Reid’s Hotel, where a ton of famous politicians, royals, and celebrities have stayed, including Winston Churchill. We didn’t want the cruise to end, but we left with big smiles on our faces and memories of an incredible morning on the water. It’s definitely a must while in Madeira!

Our first stop was São Vicente, a charming town famous for its vineyards and volcanic caves. Then, we visited the Veu da Noiva viewpoint, where we saw the famous waterfall that resembles a bride’s veil!

This small-group canyoning tour gave us some of our best memories in Madeira! It’s the ideal activity for adventurous travelers who want to get to the heart of the island’s rugged beauty.
Everything was made so easy for us. All of the gear was provided, and we were picked up from Funchal. Our guides made us feel safe and comfortable throughout the tour, so there’s no need to worry if this is your first time canyoning. The adventure kicked off with a short hike through the lush forest before we reached our first descent. It was a stunning waterfall, so we definitely headed out on a high note! We can’t say enough good things about this walking food tour of Madeira’s capital city, Funchal. Not everyone speaks English in Madeira, especially at the more authentic local eateries, so it was definitely worth having a guide to translate and help us order.
This food tour pushed us out of our comfort zone and introduced us to local specialties we’d never have found on our own. We kicked things off with a spread of local cheeses and charcuterie before diving into hidden, family-run eateries off the tourist path. The highlight? Bolo do caco—a warm, garlicky bread so addictive we couldn’t stop eating it!
One of my favorite parts of the tour was trying scabbardfish with banana. I never would have chosen to order this for myself, but I ended up absolutely loving it! We were picked up from our hotel in Funchal and driven up to Pico do Arieiro, where we were met with breathtaking views above the clouds. It was a real pinch-me moment!
From there, we ventured into the Laurissilva Forest, which isn’t just any old forest, FYI. It’s a 20 million-year-old subtropical rainforest, and we loved stepping back in time to explore its lush forest pathways and viewpoints. Our guide, Marco, was super friendly and shared so many insights as we explored.
Next, we headed to Santana for lunch. We instantly fell in love with its red-and-white triangular thatched houses and went to a local restaurant where we could order lunch on our own account. The food was fresh and flavorful, and a great chance to slow down and soak in the island’s charm.

Madeira is full of incredible hiking trails, but the Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo route is the island’s most beloved—though at 10 kilometers (6 miles) and quite challenging, hiking it out and back isn’t ideal. Watching the sunrise from Pico do Arieiro was absolutely magical and so worth the early start. We love diving, so we had to try out this scuba diving tour while we were in Madeira! Often, scuba tours are only for PADI-certified divers, but the great thing about this one is that you don’t need any diving experience to join in the fun. The dive itself lasted around 40 minutes, and I couldn’t believe how much we saw in that time. I lost count of how many parrotfish and rays there were, and I even spotted a barracuda. The visibility was crystal clear, and throughout the dive, our instructor continuously checked in with us, ensuring we were comfortable and enjoying the adventure.

We started with the cable car ride to Monte, which gave us gorgeous views as we glided over Funchal’s old town, not to mention the ocean and mountains. We also got to visit Cabo Girão and experience the jaw-dropping skywalk before finishing with a final stop in the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos. Both are super scenic, but the cable car and toboggan rides were truly what set this private tour apart for us.
