Wondering where to stay in Athens? You’re in the right place!
Athens is such an exciting city, where ancient ruins sit next to lively neighborhoods, and there’s history everywhere you look! But since most travelers only stay here for a few days, you’ll want a central and convenient base to ensure that you make the most of your time.
Whether you want to stay right by the Acropolis or be close to the foodie hotspots, Athens has no shortage of dynamic areas to enjoy. So with that in mind, I’ve broken down the best areas to stay in the Greek capital, including who each one is best for and hotel picks for different budgets. Let’s get into it!
Don’t miss out!
MY Top Choice

This is the hotel and area I loved the most and suggest booking ASAP!
My personal FAVORITE area to stay in Athens is the Plaka neighborhood! This area is charming, historic, and puts you within walking distance of Athens’ top sights.
I recommend staying at Hotel Adonis Athens. It offers luxury without breaking the bank, and the location can’t be beat!

Overview of the Best Areas To Stay in Athens

Athens is a big city, but it’s very walkable. In fact, from the key neighborhoods outlined on the map, most major sights are a 20-minute stroll at most – and often a lot closer!
For longer journeys, the metro is clean and easy to use, or you can use the Freenow app to hail a local taxi. However, I ended up walking just about everywhere as I stayed in the Psyri neighborhood, which was super central.
Here’s a quick look at my favorite neighborhoods:
- Plaka – Best for first-time visitors – This is the most popular place to stay in Athens, and it’s easy to see why! It’s a very pretty area just a 5-minute walk from top sights like the Acropolis and the Ancient Agora. Hotel Adonis Athens offers a cozy stay and stunning rooftop views.
- Monastiraki – Best for markets & street life – This is a very lively area with a more urban feel than Plaka, with great shopping and lots of rooftop bars, as well as many of Athens’ top archaeological sites. Athens Icon Collection is a sleek and quiet stay just steps from the action and major landmarks.
- Makrygianni – Best for Acropolis access – This polished neighborhood is right next to the Acropolis, and I think it’s a good choice if you want a quieter alternative to Plaka. Airotel Parthenon is a peaceful and centrally located gem just minutes from the Acropolis Museum.
- Psyri – Best for food & nightlife – Psyri is a slightly edgier area known for its buzzing bar scene, but it’s also home to a lot of Athens’ best bakeries and local restaurants, and it’s where I stayed in Athens! Pallada Athens boutique rooms & apartments is a stylish stay offering comfort and a killer location.
- Syntagma – Best for transport & central location – Syntagma offers excellent metro connections and historic monuments, including the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where you can watch the famous Changing of the Guard Ceremony. Astor Hotel Athens is a standout option here, known for its rooftop breakfast with Acropolis views and an unbeatable location on the famous Ermou Street.
- Koukaki – Best for a local vibe – About a 15-minute walk south of the Acropolis, this relaxed, local neighborhood is perfect if you want to escape the tourist crowds and enjoy some fantastic wine bars. Acropolis Select offers spacious rooms, friendly service, and a rooftop bar with stunning Parthenon views.
- City Center – Best for shopping & value stays – Also known as the “Commercial Triangle,” this neighborhood sits just north of Athens’ historic core and offers a more lived-in vibe, but it’s still just a short walk from hubs like Monastiraki Square. Evripides Hotel is my favorite stay here as it offers great value for money and a fantastic rooftop bar!
Important Tip
Multiple Athens trips have taught me that this city doesn’t reward spontaneity when it comes to planning. The good places get snapped up months in advance, leaving the overpriced and underwhelming options for last-minute travelers.
The sweet spot for booking Athens accommodations is 3-4 months out—enough time to secure good rates but not so far ahead that you’re locking in plans excessively early.
Where to Stay in Athens
Plaka

BEST FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS
Pros
- Pretty area with lots of traditional architecture
- Within walking distance of all the major ancient landmarks
- Lively vibe with lots of shops, restaurants, and happy hour deals
- Perfect for first-time visitors to Athens
Cons
- Busy and touristy area
- Accommodation prices tend to be higher
Plaka is Athens’ oldest and most picturesque neighborhood, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll fall in love with it straight away! It sits right beneath the Acropolis, so it’s super central, and its pastel-colored buildings are always strewn with bougainvillea during the warmer months. It’s also very pedestrian-friendly, with relatively few vehicles around and several streets that are totally car-free.
And sure, Plaka is touristy, but it’s popular for a reason! All around, there are street musicians playing traditional Greek songs and cute al fresco bars offering very competitive happy hour deals. It’s also the best place in Athens to shop for souvenirs, as you’ll spot little stores selling handmade jewelry and local crafts pretty much everywhere. And if you want to taste some ouzo or raki while in Athens, Brettos Bar is THE place to do it.
My favorite thing about Plaka, though, is that it’s home to Anafiotika. This is a picture-perfect enclave perched just above the neighborhood, built into the slopes of the Acropolis. I found it by heading up the Mnisikleous Street Stairs, and once I got up there, I really felt like I was in a small Cycladic village rather than the center of Athens!
Plaka is also just a 10-minute walk from other major neighborhoods like Psyri and Monastiraki, so you couldn’t ask for a more central spot. It does get busy, but personally, I loved the buzz of this area.
Electra Palace Athens – $$$

Electra Palace Athens is a five-star stunner right in the heart of Plaka – and honestly, it doesn’t get much better location-wise. From here, you’re just a short walk to the Acropolis, Syntagma Square, and a ton of must-see ancient sites. Plus, you get breathtaking views, especially from the rooftop pool and bar, where the Acropolis feels like it’s close enough to reach out and touch!
The rooms are luxurious and elegant, quiet, and tastefully designed, with soundproofed windows and blackout curtains to ensure a restful night’s sleep, even right in the heart of the city. There’s also a full-service spa, an indoor pool, and a Mediterranean restaurant with a dreamy terrace view. Breakfast on the rooftop is included, and trust me, it will definitely start your day in Athens on the right note.
Prices typically start at €350+ per night during the busier months. Free cancellation options are available on many rooms, which is always a plus!
If Electra Palace Athens is sold out, AthensWas Design Hotel is another standout right in the heart of Plaka, just steps from the Acropolis Museum and the pedestrian street leading up to the Acropolis. This sleek boutique hotel pairs minimalist design with an unbeatable location, and its rooftop restaurant offers incredible Acropolis views.
Hotel Adonis Athens – $$

Hotel Adonis Athens is a cozy gem tucked into the heart of Plaka. It’s hard to beat this location as you’ll be just a short walk from the Acropolis, Monastiraki Station, and all the charming laneways that make this neighborhood so special. The real showstopper, though, is the rooftop terrace, where you can enjoy your morning coffee or evening drink with one of the best Acropolis views in town!
The rooms are clean and comfortable, with private balconies and nice touches like soundproofing and blackout curtains. While the decor is simple, this place has everything you need for a comfortable and relaxing stay, and the staff go above and beyond to ensure you have a great experience in Athens.
Rooms typically range from €125 to €220 per night, and many options include free cancellation and breakfast with a view. It’s a fantastic pick if you want to stay somewhere central and scenic without breaking the bank.
Another nearby option is Cityzoe Athens Suites, tucked along one of Plaka’s quieter little streets. The suites feel modern and spacious, and the location makes it incredibly easy to walk to the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum, and Monastiraki Square in just a few minutes.
For something a little more boutique, Karma Athens is also a lovely pick in the area. This small, stylish hotel pairs thoughtfully designed rooms with a relaxed courtyard restaurant, giving you a peaceful place to unwind while still being steps from Athens’ most famous ancient landmarks.
Athos Hotel – $

I think that Athos Hotel is a fantastic choice for travelers who want location, comfort, and value all rolled into one. Set in the historic Plaka district, this charming hotel is just a short stroll from major attractions like the Acropolis and Monastiraki Square, with plenty of cafes, tavernas, and shops nearby.
Despite its central location, the atmosphere is peaceful and perfect after a long day of sightseeing. The rooms are clean, air-conditioned, and recently renovated, with handy extras like a minibar and soundproofing. If you’ve got room in your budget, you can also upgrade to a superior room with a balcony for partial or direct Acropolis views!
The rooftop terrace is also a lovely spot to sip a drink and take in the Athens skyline. Rates can start as low as €70 per night, making this an excellent budget option without compromising on location or comfort.
Phaedra Hotel is another well-located stay in Plaka, set along a quiet pedestrian street just steps from the Acropolis Museum. The rooms are comfortable and affordable, and some even have balconies with direct Acropolis views, which is pretty incredible for the price.
Travelers looking for an even more budget-friendly stay should also consider Dioskouros Hostel, located right near the Acropolis and the peaceful National Gardens. It has a laid-back, social vibe with dorms and private rooms available, plus a leafy courtyard where it’s easy to meet fellow travelers.
Monastiraki

BEST FOR MARKETS & STREET LIFE
Pros
- Central location with excellent metro access
- Walking distance to top historic sites
- Amazing food and shopping scene
- Lots of great rooftop bars
Cons
- Noisy, especially at night
- Busy with crowds and traffic
- Not as pretty as Plaka
Monastiraki is one of the liveliest and most central areas of Athens to stay in! While Plaka feels like a pretty village, Monastiraki has real big city energy. That means a lot more traffic, but it also means rooftop bars, street food, markets, and big-name stores rather than just souvenir shops – hello, Sephora!
I think that this is a fantastic area if you want to be right in the middle of everything. Monastiraki Square is always buzzing, and lots of Athens tours meet around here, which makes it a really convenient base if you’ve got a packed itinerary. You’re also close to some major historic sights, including Hadrian’s Library and the Ancient Agora, and the Acropolis is within walking distance too.
The area around Monastiraki Square is also where you’ll find many of Athens’ best rooftop bars. I caught a gorgeous sunset from Attic Urban Rooftop, but Elysium and Moment are also top-rated options!
I really enjoyed the energy of Monastiraki, but it’s very busy and urban, so it’s not where I’d stay if you like quiet evenings. However, if you love being surrounded by energy and trendy bars and restaurants, it’s the perfect choice.
Altar Suites – $$$

Altar Suites is a sleek, modern boutique hotel set in a prime corner of Monastiraki, with excellent Acropolis views. This place is all about location and comfort. You’re just steps from the Ancient Agora, less than 10 minutes from the Acropolis, and right near vibrant cafés, vintage shops, and the metro, so you couldn’t ask for a more central spot.
Each suite is bright and well-equipped, with walk-in showers and chic minimalist décor, plus private balconies or terraces. I also love the fact that you can enjoy breakfast up on the rooftop with a sweeping view of the city – talk about an ideal way to start the day! I think this is perfect if you’re seeking a peaceful retreat right in the heart of the action.
Rooms typically range from €200 to €500 per night, depending on size and view.
Right around the corner from Altar Suites is Esse Athens, a boutique hotel that blends contemporary design with a fantastic Monastiraki location. It’s just a short walk from the square and metro station, and the sleek rooms and rooftop terrace with Acropolis views make it a great choice if you want something modern in the middle of the action.
Those who enjoy a smaller, more intimate hotel might also like Nine Athens Hotel, located just a few minutes away near the edge of Monastiraki and Plaka. The spacious suites and leafy courtyard restaurant offer a welcome break from the busy streets, despite being within walking distance of Athens’ top sights.
Athens Icon Collection – $$

Athens Icon Collection blends modern comfort with unbeatable convenience, making it a great pick for travelers who want style without the luxury price tag. Located just steps from Monastiraki Square and metro station, this sleek hotel puts you within walking distance of the Acropolis, Ancient Agora, and Athens’ trendiest dining spots.
The rooms are fresh and contemporary, with clean lines and calming tones. It’s also very quiet at night, even with its super central location. Meanwhile, the staff are friendly and responsive, and are happy to help with everything from taxis to local recommendations.
Rates typically fall between €90 and €230 per night, depending on room type. It’s a smart, stylish choice for being in the heart of the action, but without the noise!
If your dates don’t line up for Athens Icon Collection, 360 Degrees is a stylish boutique hotel, right on Monastiraki Square, that really leans into its incredible location. The highlight here is the rooftop restaurant and bar, where you can sip a cocktail while staring straight at the Acropolis – in fact, it’s one of the best dinner views in Athens!
Or my favorite choice in this area for apartment-style stays is 24K Athena Suites, which sits just a short walk from the square and feels a bit more relaxed and residential. The suites are spacious and modern with kitchenettes and balconies, making it a great option if you want a little extra room to spread out while still being just steps away from all of the big-ticket sites.
Metis Athens Suites – $

Metis Athens Suites offers excellent value in one of the best locations in Athens. Just a short walk from Monastiraki Square, the Acropolis, and the Ancient Agora, this apartment-style stay is ideal for travelers who want space and convenience at an affordable price point.
The suites are clean and modern, with kitchenettes and recently updated bathrooms. Some units even come with balconies or rooftop views of the Acropolis, which is a major bonus! I think it’s a really great choice if you’re staying in Athens for more than just a few nights and want a self-catering setup with plenty of amenities.
Rates usually start as low as €85 per night, depending on the room and season. It’s one of the best picks around Monastiraki for comfort on a budget.
Another nearby stay worth checking out is Adrian Hotel, a long-time favorite set along a quiet street just a few minutes from Monastiraki Square. The highlight here is the rooftop terrace, where you can enjoy breakfast or a drink with clear views of the Acropolis rising above the surrounding rooftops.
Beautiful City Suites is also a great backup if things don’t work out at Metis Athens Suites. The suites are bright, stylish, and well-equipped, and the location makes it incredibly easy to wander between Monastiraki, Plaka, and the Acropolis on foot.
Makrygianni

BEST FOR ACROPOLIS ACCESS
Pros
- Steps from the Acropolis and the museum
- Polished and upscale area
- Walkable with excellent public transport
Cons
- Limited nightlife and late-night dining
- Fewer budget options
- Can be pricier due to proximity to landmarks
Makrygianni is one of the most elegant and convenient areas to stay in Athens, especially if sightseeing is your main priority. This neighborhood sits right by the Acropolis Museum, so you’re just a short walk from the Acropolis, the Theatre of Dionysus, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. Basically, if you want to wake up and be moments from some of Athens’ biggest historic sights, this is a fantastic base!
The area also feels much more polished and high-end than places like Monastiraki or Psyri. In fact, my tour guide told me that Makrygianni is one of the most expensive areas to live in all of Greece, which didn’t surprise me at all! It has leafy streets, smart apartment buildings, boutique hotels, and some lovely cafés and restaurants, all with the Acropolis right there in the background.
I really liked that Makrygianni still feels central without being quite as hectic as some of the busier neighborhoods. Dionysiou Areopagitou, the pedestrian walkway that runs below the Acropolis, is right here too, and it’s such a beautiful place for a stroll, especially later in the day.
This isn’t the area I’d choose for nightlife, but for museums and ancient sites, this refined part of Athens is hard to beat!
The Athens Gate Hotel – $$$

The Athens Gate Hotel is all about location and views. It directly faces the Temple of Olympian Zeus and is just a few minutes’ walk from the Acropolis and Plaka!
Rooms are stylish and modern, and many come with balconies that offer a direct view of the Acropolis or across Athens’ skyline. One of the highlights is the rooftop restaurant and bar, both of which are perfect for breakfast with a view or a romantic dinner as the Parthenon lights up at night.
The staff are known for their warmth and attention to detail, and the included breakfast gets consistently high praise. Rates usually range from €200 to €300 per night, with several flexible booking options and free cancellation available.
If upscale is your thing, Coco-mat Athens BC is a stylish five-star stay located just across from the Acropolis Museum with stunning views and a sleek, modern design. The rooms focus on natural materials and ultra-comfortable Coco-mat beds, and the rooftop pool and restaurant offer fantastic views of the Acropolis.
A stay we also really like in this neighborhood is Herodion Hotel, set just steps from the Acropolis Museum and the scenic Dionysiou Areopagitou promenade. The highlight here is the rooftop terrace with hot tubs and close-up views of the Parthenon.
Airotel Parthenon – $$

Airotel Parthenon is a well-loved mid-range hotel with an unbeatable location, just steps from the Acropolis Museum and less than a 5-minute walk to the Parthenon itself. Tucked on a quiet street in Makrygianni, it offers the perfect mix of central access and peaceful surroundings.
The rooms are simple yet comfortable, featuring balconies, minibars, and air conditioning. The friendly staff here really stand out, too, as they’re always ready to help with directions, transport, and local tips.
Rates usually fall between €100 and €260 per night, depending on the room type and season. With breakfast, a highly rated location, and reliable amenities, it’s a solid pick for travelers who want to stay close to the action without paying luxury prices.
Just around the corner, Athens Studios is another popular place to stay in Makrygianni, especially for travelers who like a social atmosphere. It offers a mix of private rooms and apartment-style studios, plus an on-site bar and restaurant, all just a short walk from the Acropolis Museum and Akropoli metro station.
For something a bit more upscale, AD Athens Luxury Rooms & Suites is a fantastic boutique option right near the Acropolis Museum. The rooms feel sleek and modern with large windows, plush beds, and thoughtful touches, and the location makes it incredibly easy to walk to the Acropolis, Plaka, and the scenic promenade nearby.
Great Living Apartments – $

Great Living Apartments is an ideal choice for budget-conscious travelers who don’t want to compromise on style or location. Just around the corner from the Acropolis Museum and less than five minutes from the metro, this spot puts you in the heart of Makrygianni with top sights, restaurants, and cafés all within walking distance.
The apartments are bright, modern, and thoughtfully designed with sleek bathrooms, parquet floors, and floor-to-ceiling windows. Each unit includes a kitchenette, espresso machine, and air conditioning, making it a perfect fit for stays or anyone who likes a bit more independence while traveling. Some even offer views over the city!
Prices generally start around €120 per night, with flexible booking options available. For a clean, contemporary stay in an unbeatable location, it’s hard to find better value in Athens.
Another reliable option in the neighborhood is Philippos Hotel, a long-standing favorite located just a short walk from the Acropolis Museum and the pedestrian promenade. The rooms are simple but comfortable, and the welcoming staff and excellent breakfast make it a great base for exploring Athens’ historic sights.
Those looking for something a bit more social might enjoy Athens Backpackers, which sits right by the Acropolis metro station and has one of the most famous rooftop bars in the area. With dorms, private rooms, and a lively atmosphere, it’s a fun and affordable choice for meeting other travelers while still being steps from the Acropolis.

Psyri

BEST FOR NIGHTLIFE
Pros
- Great nightlife and live music
- Creative, artsy atmosphere
- Central location near major attractions
Cons
- Can be noisy, especially on weekends
- Some streets are less polished than others
- Fewer luxury hotel options
Psyri is one of the coolest areas to stay in Athens if you want somewhere central and full of personality. I stayed here during my Athens trip and really loved it. It’s definitely a bit rough around the edges, but in a way that I found charming, and some streets are actually quite picturesque! There’s lots of colorful graffiti around, too, and a creative feel that makes this area a lot of fun to explore.
This is also one of the best areas in Athens for food. There are lots of locally loved spots around here, and I actually did an amazing food tour that focused mainly on Psyri, which really gave me a better feel for the neighborhood. I loved the mix of traditional tavernas, street food, and beloved local bakeries!
Psyri is also home to Little Kook, one of Athens’ most famous themed cafés, and even if you don’t stop for coffee, it’s worth walking past for photos. And of course, it’s known for its buzzing bar scene, with cool spots like The Artist Rooftop and the punk-themed Bad Tooth located here.
I also found Psyri really convenient. It was easy to walk around Athens from here, and I could reach pretty much all of the major sites on foot! It’s ideal for younger travelers, and I would definitely stay here again.
NLH MONASTIRAKI – $$$

NLH MONASTIRAKI – Neighborhood Lifestyle Hotels blends sleek modern style with an unbeatable location in the heart of creative and eclectic Psyri. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from Monastiraki Square and the metro, so it’s perfect for exploring the city’s ancient landmarks by day and then enjoying its trendy rooftops and quirky bars at night.
The rooms here are soundproofed, so you won’t need to worry about Psyri’s street noise, and I love their minimalist decor. There’s also a small gym on site and an excellent daily breakfast, although there are also plenty of awesome bakeries and cafes nearby if you prefer to eat out. It’s refined but welcoming, and I think it’s ideal if you want a chic stay in one of Athens’ coolest areas.
Rooms generally range from €100 to €300 per night, depending on the season and room type.
Tucked along a quieter street in the heart of Psyri, Philia Boutique Hotel is another boutique stay that I really like in this area. The design is stylish but cozy, and the rooftop terrace with Acropolis views makes it a great spot to unwind after exploring the neighborhood.
Or if you want to stay right in the middle of the action, A for Athens is also a fantastic pick overlooking Monastiraki Square. The rooms are modern and comfortable, but the real highlight is the rooftop bar, where you can sip cocktails with one of the most iconic Acropolis views in the city.
Pallada Athens boutique rooms & apartments – $$

Pallada Athens boutique rooms & apartments is a charming mid-range stay located just a few minutes’ walk from Monastiraki Square, right in the lively core of Psyri. This hotel is ideal for travelers who want plush touches but don’t want to splurge on a full-on luxury stay. Oh, and it’s soundproof, which is definitely a plus!
I like that this place has both rooms and apartments on offer. It’s ideal if you’re staying in Athens for more than just a couple of nights and want the option to self-cater, although there is a complimentary breakfast each morning, which definitely makes life easier – and who doesn’t love free pastries?
Expect rates to fall between €120 and €170 per night, depending on the room type and season.
If Pallada Athens is booked and you like modern boutique hotels, I recommend checking out Athens21 instead! It’s located just a short stroll from Monastiraki Square, with sleek rooms and large windows, and amazing Acropolis views!
Another excellent pick nearby is 14 Reasons Why Hotel Athens, a small boutique stay that blends comfort with a bit of playful personality. The rooms are bright with a fun, artsy design, and the hotel sits right in the middle of Psyri’s lively streets, so you’ll have some of Athens’ best nightlife and dining spots right on your doorstep.
YellowSquare Athens – $

For a budget-friendly stay that still feels fun and central, YellowSquare Athens is a great choice. I stayed here in a private room, which was clean and comfortable, with great AC. I also loved the surrounding Psyri neighborhood, as there were tons of cool restaurants nearby and I was only a short walk from Monastiraki Square and Plaka!
YellowSquare has a social feel without being a full-on party hostel, and there were people of all ages staying here. There’s a big lounge downstairs with beanbags, a co-working space, and a yoga/workout studio, but the best part was definitely the rooftop bar, which had amazing views of the Acropolis!
Dorm beds start from around €25 per night and private rooms start from €100.
Living Yard Thissio is a lovely boutique-style stay set on a quieter street near the edge of Psyri and close to the Ancient Agora. The rooms feel bright and modern with clean design and comfortable beds, and the location makes it easy to walk to most of Athens’ most famous landmarks.
Those wanting a little extra relaxation during their trip might prefer Mariet Athens Boutique Spa, which adds a wellness element to your stay in the heart of the city, without costing a lot. The rooms are plush and stylish, with spa-inspired bathrooms, and there’s a full spa on site where guests can choose from a range of pampering treatments.

Syntagma

BEST FOR TRANSPORT & CENTRAL LOCATION
Pros
- Extremely central and walkable
- Easy access to the metro, buses, and airport transport
- Close to shopping, gardens, and top landmarks
Cons
- Busy and tourist-heavy during the day
- Limited nightlife compared to other neighborhoods
- More practical than charming
Syntagma is one of the most practical areas to stay in Athens, especially if you want somewhere central and well-connected. This is the civic heart of the city, home to the Greek Parliament and the famous Evzones guards, so there’s always a lot going on around the square.
I passed through Syntagma a few times during my trip – it’s pretty much impossible not to when exploring Athens! There’s a major metro station right here, and airport buses stop nearby, so getting around is simple. And of course, you can walk to so many of Athens’ main sights from here, including the famous Lycabettus Hill.
Plaka and Monastiraki are both very close by, and the National Garden sits right on the edge of the square. I also walked to the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Panathenaic Stadium from here, and of course, I watched the famous Changing of the Guard Ceremony at the Monument to the Unknown Soldier. That happens on the hour, every hour, right in Syntagma Square!
The area definitely feels quite busy and commercial, and it wouldn’t be my top pick if you want loads of nightlife right on your doorstep. It doesn’t have the charm of Plaka or the quirkiness of Psyri, but it’s super convenient and close to everything. And if you plan on using a lot of public transport to get around Athens, you couldn’t ask for a better base!
Athens Capital Center Hotel – $$$

Few places balance sophistication and convenience quite like Athens Capital Center Hotel – MGallery Collection. This is a five-star stay set steps from Syntagma Square, and it blends sleek, contemporary design with curated artwork and exceptional service. In short, it’s ideal for travelers who want a luxurious base right in the city center!
Rooms are stylish and soundproofed with luxe beds, rainfall showers, and espresso machines. One of the standout features is the rooftop pool and Mappemonde Lounge Bar, which offers panoramic views of the Acropolis and Lycabettus Hill – what more could you ask for?
You’ve also got the highly rated MFlavours restaurant on site, plus the elegant Gallerie Café. Then, everything from high-end shopping to ancient landmarks is just a short stroll away.
Rates typically range from €300 to €1,000+ per night, depending on the room type and season.
Electra Metropolis is another standout luxury stay right near Syntagma Square, especially if you love a hotel with a view. Its rooftop restaurant and infinity pool overlook the Acropolis, and the stylish rooms plus full-service spa make it a wonderful place to unwind after a day exploring Athens.
Just across from Syntagma Square, NJV Athens Plaza is also a fantastic option if you want to stay in the very center of it all. Many rooms look directly over the square toward the Parliament building, and the hotel’s classic style and spacious rooms make it a comfortable base for sightseeing and shopping, and you’ve also got super quick metro access.
Astor Hotel Athens – $$

Astor Hotel Athens sits just off Syntagma Square, offering one of the best rooftop restaurant views in the city! As you can probably gather by now, there are lots of great rooftops in Athens, but from here, the Acropolis almost looks close enough to reach out and touch!
The rooms are simple and clean with air-conditioning, soundproofing, and mini-fridges, and some even come with balconies or direct Parthenon views. The property is nestled on the famous Ermou Street, which is one of Athens’ best pedestrian shopping streets, so you’ll be surrounded by plenty of entertainment options. It’s also super easy to walk to other areas like Plaka and Monastiraki from here, as well as to reach sites like the Panathenaic Stadium (which is my favorite ancient site in Athens, just FYI!)
While it’s not ultra-modern, the hotel’s welcoming atmosphere and prime address make it a reliable mid-range pick. Prices generally range from €120 to €300 per night, depending on your room selection.
Not far from here, Hotel Adonis Athens is another well-located stay that travelers often love for its charm and value. The rooftop terrace offers fantastic Acropolis views, and the location in nearby Plaka makes it easy to wander Athens’ historic streets while still being close to Syntagma.
If you’re looking for a stay that feels a bit more boutique, check out InnAthens, which is right beside the peaceful National Garden. The leafy courtyard, stylish rooms, and excellent breakfast make it feel quiet and secluded, even though it’s right in the middle of Athens!
Pan Hotel – $

Right around the corner from Syntagma Square, Pan Hotel delivers comfort and unbeatable convenience on a budget. I love the fact that this place has been family-run since the 1960s!
This is a simple but very welcoming stay that offers tidy rooms with air-conditioning, minibars, soundproofing, and free Wi-Fi. A buffet breakfast is included, and the staff is super friendly and helpful. While rooms are on the smaller side, the value is excellent for the location: you’re just a few minutes from Ermou Street, Plaka, the National Garden, and direct airport transport via the nearby X95 bus stop.
Whether you’re catching an early flight or planning to walk the city, it’s hard to beat this spot for convenience! Rates typically start around €110 per night, making it a top pick for travelers on a budget who still want to stay in the center of it all.
Another nearby option worth considering is Amazon Hotel, which sits just a short walk from Syntagma Square and the start of Plaka. The rooms are bright and modern, and guests love the location for being close to Athens’ biggest sights while still feeling tucked away from the busiest streets.
For something a bit more boutique, ASTIKON Xenofontos Suites offers spacious, stylish accommodations in a beautifully restored historic building. The suites feel more like private apartments, making them a great pick if you want extra room to spread out while staying right in the heart of Athens.
Koukaki

BEST FOR A LOCAL VIBE
Pros
- Local, non-touristy atmosphere
- Walking distance to the Acropolis and major sites
- Excellent cafés and wine bars
Cons
- Fewer luxury hotel choices
- Less central than Syntagma or Monastiraki
Koukaki is a laid-back residential neighborhood just south of the Acropolis, and it’s also one of Athens’ prettiest areas! It has a lot of local charm and accommodation prices here are quite reasonable, but the trade-off is that it’s a bit further out.
I’m not talking miles and miles here – you can walk to the Acropolis and Plaka in around 20 minutes, while it’s just under 30 minutes’ walk to Monastiraki Square. My itinerary also didn’t naturally take me to this area, so it’s not as convenient as the other neighborhoods I’ve mentioned.
But Koukaki does involve a bit more walking (or greater reliance on public transport and taxis), I think it could still be a great base! This is especially true for younger travelers or those who have been to Athens before and already ticked off the main sights. Personally, I would be keen to come and stay here on my next visit to the city!
The area is known for independent cafés, bakeries, tavernas, and wine bars, especially around streets like Georgaki Olympiou. In fact, even if you don’t stay here, I think it’s still worth making your way over for a glass of wine one evening.

These stylish, well-equipped apartments offer the comforts of home, but with perks like private balconies, a rooftop terrace, and views of the Acropolis. Now, that never gets old!
I love the decor of these apartments. They’re both cozy and classy, and that fits the vibe of the Koukaki neighborhood very well! And with full kitchens and washing machines, these units are absolutely ideal for longer stays.
Rates for a one-bedroom apartment typically range from €200 to €300 per night. The reviews are incredible, too – read them here!

The suites are spacious and well-equipped with kitchens and comfortable living areas, making them a great option if you want a bit more room while staying within easy walking distance of the Acropolis and the museum.
For something a little more upscale, Neoma is a stylish boutique hotel set on a quiet hillside just above Koukaki. The design is sleek and contemporary, and the rooftop restaurant and pool offer incredible Acropolis views that make returning to the hotel after a day of exploring feel like a real treat.
Acropolis Select – $$

Acropolis Select is nestled between Koukaki and Plaka, and it’s just a 5-minute walk from the Acropolis Museum, so you really get the best of both worlds here! On one side, you’ve got Athens’ picture-perfect tourist hub and ancient sites, and on the other, you’ve got a hip and trendy local neighborhood brimming with gems that most tourists miss. What’s not to love?
Rooms are simple but stylish, with Italian furnishings and spacious layouts, while the rooftop restaurant is perfect for sunset drinks with Acropolis views. You’ve got plenty of restaurants and shops right on your doorsteps, and you get welcome drinks when you arrive – cheers!

The suites are bright, spacious, and well-equipped with kitchenettes and balconies, and the location right by the Syngrou-Fix metro station makes it easy to get around Athens!
Travelers wanting something smaller and more low-key might enjoy Neratzia Rooms, a cozy guesthouse tucked into a quiet corner of Koukaki. The rooms are simple, clean, and welcoming, and the surrounding streets are full of local cafés and bakeries while still being within easy walking distance of the Acropolis and museum.
Ilissos – $

Ilissos is a solid budget-friendly hotel option in Koukaki that offers more comfort than you might expect at this price point. While it’s technically a 4-star property, it delivers relaxed, no-frills hospitality, although there’s still a rooftop bar with Acropolis views. That’s basically a must in Athens!
Rooms are spacious, soundproofed, and come with minibars, while the on-site restaurant serves up a well-liked Mediterranean breakfast buffet. Its location makes sightseeing easy—just a 10-minute walk to the Syngrou Fix metro and about 20 minutes on foot to the Acropolis and Plaka.
Though the style is slightly dated, this place is still a clean and pleasant base for exploring Athens on a budget. Standard nightly rates typically range from €60 to €100, making it one of the best value stays in the city!
Marble House is another good-value option in the same Koukaki area, especially if you like the idea of a smaller, family-run stay. The rooms are simple but comfortable, and the quiet residential setting plus leafy courtyard garden make it a peaceful base after a busy day exploring Athens.
If you want a bit more personality, Art Gallery Hotel is a fun boutique-style stay that reflects Athens’ creative side. Colorful artwork brightens the rooms, and the location keeps you within easy walking distance of the Acropolis Museum, Filopappou Hill, and many of Koukaki’s best cafés.
City Center

BEST FOR SHOPPING & VALUE STAYS
Pros
- Excellent transport connections
- Walkable to many major sights
- Affordable hotel and food options
Cons
- Can be noisy and crowded
- Certain areas show their age more than others
- Limited boutique or upscale hotel choices
Athens City Center is a good choice if you want to stay central without paying quite as much as you might in Plaka, Monastiraki, or Psyrri. And I’ll be honest, this part of the city doesn’t feel as fun and interesting as those areas, but it’s affordable and in a great location. Plus, you can still walk to Monastiraki Square in about 5 minutes and get to Plaka in under 15 minutes, so it’s easy to enjoy the best of the city from here without relying on transport all the time.
I think this area is best suited to travelers who want a convenient base and good value, rather than somewhere with loads of character. If you’re planning to spend most of your time out sightseeing, eating, and exploring anyway, Athens City Center makes a lot of sense!
It’s a particularly good option if you find a hotel you like at a much better price than in the more popular neighborhoods nearby. You’ll still be central, you’ll still be able to walk to most major sights, and you can put the money you save towards rooftop drinks, food tours, or another plate of Greek food, which is never a bad idea.
Hotel Fresh – $$$

Hotel Fresh lives up to its name with a sleek, contemporary design, as well as a sauna and a fitness center on site. Oh, and a rooftop pool with views of the Acropolis – don’t forget about that!
The rooms are very modern with designer furnishings and bold pops of color, not to mention plush bedding and soundproofing. There’s also the chic Air Lounge up on the roof, which offers Mediterranean dishes and panoramic views of the city. It definitely offers vacation vibes!
And as if all that weren’t enough, guests can enjoy a complimentary breakfast buffet each morning with yummy items like Greek yogurt parfait, fresh fruit, and cooked options.
Nightly rates generally start at around €200 during peak season, which I think is a bargain for a hotel this nice!
A nearby stay with a similar modern feel is NYX Esperia Palace Hotel Athens by Leonardo Hotels, located just a short walk from Syntagma and the heart of the city center. The hotel leans into a bold, art-forward style with colorful rooms, a rooftop bar with Acropolis views, and a lively atmosphere that makes it especially popular with younger travelers.
Those looking for something a bit more boutique might enjoy The Residence Aiolou Hotel & Spa, tucked along one of the central streets connecting Omonia and Monastiraki. The rooms feel stylish and refined, and the on-site spa adds a relaxing touch after a long day exploring Athens’ markets, museums, and historic landmarks nearby.
Evripides Hotel – $$

Evripides Hotel is a great-value stay in a really walkable part of Athens, tucked between the Central Market and Monastiraki. It’s a simple, comfortable mid-range hotel, but the real highlight is the rooftop terrace, which has amazing views of the Acropolis.
The rooms are bright and modern, with everything you need for a short city stay, including balconies in some rooms. Breakfast is served on the 7th floor, so you can start the day with Acropolis views, and there’s also an evening bar if you fancy coming back for a drink after a day of exploring. There’s even a small gym and sauna, which is a nice bonus at this price point.
Location-wise, it’s super convenient. You’re within easy walking distance of Psyrri, Monastiraki, Plaka, and the metro, so it’s ideal if you want to explore Athens mostly on foot. Nightly rates usually start at around €70 to €120, including breakfast, which makes this a really solid pick for the city center.
Athens Manor Houses is a great nearby option for travelers who want apartment-style accommodation in the heart of the city. The suites are spacious and modern with kitchens and living areas, making them especially convenient for longer stays while still being within walking distance of popular areas like Monastiraki and Psyri.
Just a few streets away, ATHINAIDOS QUARTERS by K&K offers a small collection of stylish apartments tucked along a lively pedestrian street. The design feels fresh and contemporary, and the location places you right between the city center’s markets and historic sights.
Economy Hotel – $

Economy Hotel offers one of the best value-for-money stays in central Athens. I think it’s ideal for budget-conscious travelers who don’t want to compromise on location. It’s set just a short walk from both the Omonia and Monastiraki metro stations, making it easy to get around Athens from here!
The rooms are simple but comfortable, with balconies and soundproofing for a peaceful night’s rest. And it wouldn’t be an Athens hotel without a rooftop terrace now, would it? Despite its wallet-friendly price tag, this hotel still offers a rooftop terrace with fantastic views of the city and Lycabettus Hill.
Rates here start at around €90 during peak summer, including breakfast, so I think it’s excellent value for money!
If you’re looking for something affordable but with a slightly more boutique feel in this area, Noma Hotel is a stylish option set along a lively pedestrian street. The rooms feature modern design and comfortable beds, while the location keeps you within an easy walk of Monastiraki, Psiri, and Athens’ buzzing food scene.
A stay that leans more toward upscale apartment living is The Vault Athens, which is housed in a beautifully restored historic building. The suites are spacious and elegantly designed with high ceilings and luxurious finishes, offering a comfortable retreat while still placing you right in the middle of Athens’ vibrant downtown streets.
Other Activities to do While in Athens

Now that you have found the best area to stay and booked your preferred hotel, you can start planning your trip! Here are a few of the best things that I did in Athens, although the list could go on and on! I recommend booking these activities early, as they often sell out weeks (or months) in advance. Personally, I reserved my tours about 3 months in advance.
- Explore the Acropolis – Visiting the Acropolis is easily the most popular thing to do in Athens! I booked this guided tour so we could learn all the history of this ancient site, and it was so worth it. I went for the morning session, which meant that I missed the worst of the crowds as well!
- Go on a food tour – I LOVE Greek food, so joining this food tour was high on my Athens bucket list, and it didn’t disappoint! My guide led me around the vibrant Psyri neighborhood and introduced me to everything from traditional coffee and spoon sweets to keftedes and the most amazing feta and honey pie! I was stuffed by the end – but that’s what you want in a food tour, right?
- Spend a day on the islands – If you’re not heading to the islands after your time in Athens, you can still experience their beauty on this full day cruise. You’ll sail around the Agistri, Moni, Aegina islands while enjoying delicious food and unlimited drinks – opa!
- See the Temple of Poseidon at sunset – I am SO glad that I did this sunset tour of the Temple of Poseidon! It was absolutely incredible. Watching the sunset over this beautifully preserved ancient temple (and the gorgeous surrounding coastline) was truly an experience that I will never forget. Plus, having transportation and a local guide made visiting super easy, and we even stopped at a local beach club on the way there!
- Take a scenic bike tour of Athens – If you’re short on time in Athens, this bike tour is the perfect way to cover a lot of ground in just a few hours. You’ll visit ancient sites like the Panathenaic Stadium and the Roman Agora, and you can opt to include the Acropolis as well! It’s such a fun and efficient way to see Athens.

Renting a Car in Europe

Exploring Europe by car is a fantastic way to uncover hidden gems—think charming villages, scenic countryside, and off-the-beaten-path spots that trains and buses might miss. Driving here is generally straightforward, but it’s good to be prepared for some regional quirks.
We always use Discover Cars to book our rentals and can’t recommend them enough. It’s super easy to compare prices, check company ratings, find automatic cars (which can be tricky in Europe!), and add affordable full coverage insurance. If you want a full breakdown, check out our Discover Cars review here.

AIRALO e-SIM Up To 15% Off With Code “DTRAVEL15”
What’s an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of buying a little plastic chip and swapping it into your phone, you just download it. It connects your phone to a local network in whatever country you’re visiting — no stores, no waiting, and no fiddling with tiny cards.
In simple terms, it’s the easiest way to get data and stay connected while traveling.
We’ve tested a bunch of eSIMs over the years, and after a few frustrating experiences, we’ve found our favorite — Airalo. It’s fast, reliable, and incredibly easy to use. You can set it up in minutes (even my mom managed it solo on her first try!), and the prices are some of the best out there.
