Madeira at a Glance

Madeira is a lush, volcanic Portuguese island in the Atlantic Ocean. It’s actually known as the “Hawaii of Europe” thanks to its dramatic landscape, so it’s a dream destination if you love to hike and spend time outdoors. And don’t worry, there’s also plenty of amazing food and wine to enjoy!
Here are a few things you should know before visiting:
Stay in Funchal: I based myself in the island’s capital city and loved it. It’s a super charming area, and it’s so easy to explore Madeira from here. Plus, it’s where all of the best restaurants are!
How long to stay: I would recommend at least 5 days in Madeira, or a week if you can swing it! I’ve actually put together an ideal 5-day itinerary based on my trip that covers all of the island’s highlights.
Getting around: Let’s just say I didn’t love driving in Madeira! If you’re staying in Funchal, you can explore the capital’s top sights on foot and then use organized tours to explore the rest of the island. Not having to deal with those steep, winding roads makes life so much easier and ensures you don’t miss out on anything!
Bring layers: Madeira has a mild climate year-round (they call it an eternal spring), but the weather varies dramatically across the island. There are tons of different microclimates here, and sometimes you’ll drive through a tunnel and emerge into completely different weather on the other side. For that reason, layers are your friend here!
Bring some cash: Most places accept credit cards (although not Amex!), but you will need cash every now and then, especially at smaller cafes and for tips. I withdrew cash when I arrived on the island, and €100 was enough for the week. Just avoid Euronet ATMs – they charge the highest fees and offer poor exchange rates.
How I’d Spend 5 Days in Madeira

I think five days is the perfect amount of time to experience what this beautiful island has to offer! From lush mountains and dramatic coastlines to incredible food and wine, there’s SO much to see and do here. I’ve put together this five-day itinerary based on my own trip, which covers all of the highlights without needing to rent a car.
🥘Day 1: There’s only one way to start a trip to Madeira, and that’s with a ride on the cable car up to Monte to explore its famous tropical gardens. Later, join this fantastic walking food tour to try traditional Madeiran dishes and get your bearings around the city.
⛰️Day 2: Spend the day exploring Madeira’s spectacular northwest coast on this epic 4×4 tour. I had the best time visiting the island’s most jaw-dropping highlights!
🐬Day 3: Begin your morning with a dolphin and whale-watching cruise and then spend the afternoon exploring Funchal’s Old Town before sunset drinks and dinner in the resort area of São Marthinhao.
🌅Day 4: Get up bright and early for a sunrise hike in Madeira’s mountains! Take the afternoon easy and then end your day with this amazing sunset cruise.
🏡Day 5: Spend your final day exploring Madeira’s east coast on this full-day sightseeing tour. It includes the famous Pico do Arieiro viewpoint and the famous traditional cottages in Santana, so it’s the perfect way to wrap up your trip.
This is exactly how I spent my time in Madeira, and I had the BEST trip! For more details, check out my full 5-day Madeira itinerary, where I go in-depth and share all of my favorite restaurants, tours, and tips from my visit.
Insider tip: Madeira’s mountain weather can be unpredictable, so I’d recommend keeping your sunrise hike flexible. You might need to swap a couple of days around to get the best conditions!
Things to do in Madeira
1. Hike Pico Ruivo at sunrise (with transfers!)

Tour Details
One thing I learned in Madeira is that the mountain weather doesn’t always cooperate! I went on this sunrise hike, and as you can see from my photos, I didn’t have much luck with the views. Still, it was a really fun experience, and our group actually laughed a lot about our bad luck!
The tour starts bright and early (and I mean EARLY!) with hotel pickup at around 4 am. You’ll then head into the mountains with your guide, who provides torches for the 2.5-kilometer (1.5-mile) hike to the summit in the dark. You’ll head to Pico Ruivo, the highest point on the island, for what will hopefully be a spectacular sunrise!
The uphill walk takes around 1.5 hours, with breaks along the way, so you’ll need a reasonable level of fitness, but you don’t need to be a super experienced hiker or anything. And imagine reaching the summit just as the sun rises over those incredible mountain peaks! It’s definitely worth the early alarm, and when I come back to Madeira, I will definitely book this tour again so I can see a proper sunrise.
I also love that this is a small-group experience, with a maximum of six people, and all transportation is included. Trust me, you don’t want to tackle Madeira’s narrow mountain roads in the dark!
2. 4×4 tour of Madeira’s best sights: Porto Monix, Fanal Forest, and Cabo Girão Skywalk

Tour Details
Hands down, this tour was my FAVORITE thing I did in Madeira! I’ve been on plenty of sightseeing tours before, but this 4×4 adventure was one of the most fun tours I’ve ever done.
Our guide, Pedro, picked us up in his beloved Land Rover Defender, named Manu, and off we went! Pedro knew all of the island’s shortcuts and took us down tiny, winding roads that I wouldn’t have dared tackle in a rental car.
We visited some incredible places, including the glass-bottomed Cabo Girão Skywalk, Seixal’s black-sand beach, and the volcanic swimming pools at Porto Moniz. Then there was Fanal Forest, which was so foggy that I accidentally walked in a circle without realizing! The ancient trees looked like something straight out of a ghost movie.

But my favorite part came after lunch, when Pedro took us off-roading through the mountains. We stood up through the roof of the Land Rover with the music blasting as we bounced along the tracks. It was SO much fun! Then, we finished the day in sunny Ponta do Sol, a gorgeous little beach town that I immediately wanted to revisit.
I also loved how sociable this tour was. Pedro was an amazing guide, and I met some lovely people along the way. It was perfect for a solo traveler like me, but I would recommend it to anyone because it’s such a fun way to explore Madeira. And I’m not the only one who loved it – you can read THOUSANDS of 5-star reviews here!
3. Spot dolphins and whales on a cruise

Tour Details
Did you know that Madeira is one of the best destinations in Europe for spotting dolphins and whales? Yup, it’s true! So booking this dolphin and whale-watching cruise from Funchal was a no-brainer for me.
Now, full disclaimer: I didn’t see any dolphins. But what I did see a TON of was pilot whales! I had never seen them before, so I was more than happy with that trade-off.
Our captain told us pilot whales live around Madeira all year and don’t migrate. We saw the first group of them about 15 minutes into the boat ride, and we kept on finding them throughout the trip. The crew cut the engine whenever we got close, too, so we could watch without disturbing them. They came so close to the boat, which was just amazing.
Later on, we spotted a rare Mediterranean monk seal. Monk seals are the rarest seal and sea lion species in the world, so I literally could not believe my luck!
There was also a swimming stop beneath the towering cliffs of Cabo Girão. I hadn’t realized that beforehand, so I didn’t pack a swimsuit, and I was gutted. The water looked amazing, so don’t make my mistake!
This was easily one of my favorite things I did in Madeira, and I’d recommend it to anyone who loves wildlife! Seeing pilot whales and a monk seal was a dream come true, and I’m really grateful that I got to have this experience.
4. Dive into Madeira’s food and wine culture

Tour Details
One of my favorite things about Madeira was the food, and this walking food tour of Funchal was the perfect introduction. I did it on my first day, which proved to be a great choice because I got to try loads of local dishes and get my bearings around the city.
Our guide, Mara, was born and raised in Madeira, and she was an absolute wealth of knowledge. The tour started with a visit to the famous Mercado dos Lavradores, where we enjoyed fruit and chocolate tastings. Here, Mara also taught us how to avoid getting scammed at the market, which was actually very useful, as later on my trip I met a woman who’d been charged €94 for some figs that weren’t even from Madeira!
Then came the food and wine! We visited a historic bar to sample Madeira wine, followed by a tapas spot where we enjoyed local cheeses and cured meats, plus a generous glass of wine from the Douro Valley.
We also stopped at a bakery for traditional cakes and cookies before sitting down to a delicious meal of flaming chorizo, tempura black scabbard fish with banana (a Madeira classic!), and fresh tuna ceviche. Finally, we visited a poncha bar to learn about Madeira’s famous local drink, and try some for ourselves, of course!
If you appreciate good food and wine, I think you’ll love this tour. I really enjoyed it, and it was a great way to learn what to order throughout the rest of my trip.
5. Spend a Beach Day in Sunny Calheta

If you’re craving a proper beach day in Madeira, head to Calheta! It’s only about a 30-minute drive from Funchal, but it feels totally different.
For starters, Calheta has two man-made beaches with golden sand, rather than Madeira’s usual volcanic black stuff. Fun fact: it’s actually imported from Morocco!
The water is lovely and clear, and the bay is framed by dramatic cliffs and palm trees. And best of all, this area tends to have far better weather than the rest of the island. It was pretty grey when I left Funchal, but when I arrived in Calheta, it was all blue skies and sunshine.
This area definitely has a resort feel, and you’ve got the huge Calheta Beach Savoy Signature hotel right on the water’s edge. I think this would be a great place to stay if you fancy a couple of beach days, but you can also just buy a day pass for €70 and enjoy the pool and spa.
Other than that, there are a few beach bars for lunch or a cold brisa (my favorite!) but other than that, there’s not a huge amount to do around here. But that’s the idea – you come to Calheta to relax in the sun!
There’s plenty of parking along the beach, and it’s reasonably priced, although most of the spots fill up by midday. If you’re staying in Funchal, you can also get here by Bolt, and there are lots of taxis waiting by the Savoy and the Pingo Doce supermarket to take you back again later on.
6. Watch the Sunset from Pico do Arieiro and Hike the Stairway to Heaven

Tour Details
Pico do Arieiro is one of Madeira’s most famous landmarks, and for good reason! At 1,818 meters (5,965 feet), it’s the island’s third-highest peak, with incredible views of the surrounding mountains. On a clear day, you can even find yourself standing above the clouds!
It’s also home to the famous PR1 hiking trail, which connects Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest peak. You’ve probably seen photos of the iconic Stairway to Heaven, where stone steps wind along a dramatic mountain ridge. Well, this guided sunset tour lets you experience this famous section of the trail without tackling the entire hike!
The tour includes hotel pickup from Funchal, so you won’t have to navigate those winding mountain roads yourself. Once you arrive, you’ll hike around 1.2 kilometers (0.7 miles) each way, stopping at the beautiful Ninho da Manta viewpoint and the Stairway to Heaven.
Then it’s time to enjoy the sunset! The views from up here can be absolutely spectacular, especially when the mountains are surrounded by a sea of clouds.
Just bear in mind that Madeira’s mountain weather is notoriously unpredictable. I certainly learned that during my trip! Bring warm layers and a rain jacket, even if it’s sunny down in Funchal, and keep your plans flexible in case the weather doesn’t cooperate.
7. Spend a day exploring Madeira’s east coast

Tour Details
A big part of Madeira’s appeal is just how different the landscapes are across the island. And on this full-day tour of Madeira’s east coast, I definitely got to see that for myself!
I was picked up right on time, and our first stop was the Terreiro da Luta viewpoint, before heading up to Pico do Arieiro, Madeira’s third-highest (and arguably most famous) peak. The mountain scenery was incredible, but it was COLD up there! Luckily, there’s a cafe, so I grabbed a hot chocolate to warm up.
We also visited Ribeiro Frio, home to the beautiful Laurissilva Forest and a trout farm, before continuing to Santana to see Madeira’s famous colorful A-frame cottages. You’ll recognize these from pretty much every postcard and fridge magnet on the island!

Now, I’ll be honest, the main cluster of cottages is very touristy. But if you wander a little further into town, you’ll find more traditional houses away from the crowds. We had an hour and a half here, so there’s plenty of time to explore.
Finally, we visited the rugged coastline around Ponta de São Lourenço. The landscape here was so dry and almost barren that I could hardly believe I was on the same island!
I highly recommend this tour if you want to see more of Madeira without renting a car. Just remember to bring layers, because the weather varies dramatically between stops. I wore a top, cardigan, and light rain jacket, which worked perfectly!

8. Enjoy a traditional farm-to-table dinner

Tour Details
If you love food experiences that go beyond your typical restaurant meal, this farm-to-table dinner is definitely worth checking out! I absolutely love experiences like this, and after seeing the incredible reviews, I’m gutted I didn’t manage to squeeze it into my Madeira itinerary.
Re-Canto is a family-run farm in the hills above Funchal, with gorgeous views over the city and out to the Atlantic Ocean. And rather than simply turning up for dinner, you’ll actually get to see where your food comes from!
The evening starts with a welcome poncha (Madeira’s famous rum-based drink), followed by a guided tour of the farm. You’ll learn about the different fruits and vegetables grown here before sitting down to a delicious four-course dinner.
The menu changes with the seasons, but the star of the show is espetada, a traditional Madeiran dish of meat cooked on skewers. Much of the produce comes straight from the farm, so it doesn’t get much fresher than this! Vegetarian and vegan options are available, too.
And did I mention the views? You’ll watch the sunset over Funchal as you eat, which, if you ask me, always makes a meal taste better.
The experience lasts around three hours, and the glowing reviews rave about the welcoming hosts and friendly atmosphere. Believe me when I say I will definitely be booking this one on my next trip to Madeira!
9. Explore Funchal’s Quirky Museums

Madeira is about more than mountains and beaches! There are some really fun museums in Funchal, and they’re perfect for wet weather or when you just need a more low-key activity.
I visited the Immersive Museum of Madeira (IMOM) on the day I arrived in Madeira, and it was totally unlike any museum I’ve been to before! The first room was an immersive cinema experience, with a film showcasing Madeira’s incredible landscapes projected onto the walls and all around you. It really conveys how multi-faceted the island is!
Then I headed into a second room full of interactive exhibits, including a piano wall, stepping stones, and even a slide! It’s a really fun and playful experience, and it made me feel a bit like a kid again.
Another option is the 3D Fun Art Museum, which is full of optical illusions and interactive artwork. You can pose inside 3D paintings, explore an upside-down room, and take some hilarious photos. I think that this would be especially fun with kids!
And if you’re interested in history, check out the Madeira Photography Museum. It’s housed in a historic 19th-century photography studio and displays old cameras and photographs. I didn’t get a chance to go inside, but it’s definitely on my list for next time!
All three museums are in central Funchal, so they’re super easy to fit into your sightseeing plans. They’re also good activities to have in your back pocket for a rainy afternoon.
10. Spot dolphins on a sunset cruise

Tour Details
Is there anything better than watching the sunset from a boat? Short answer: no!
If you’re visiting Madeira with friends, I think that this private sunset cruise is the way to go.
You’ll have the whole boat to yourselves as you sail along Madeira’s beautiful coastline, passing the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos and the towering cliffs of Cabo Girão. Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, too, as they’re often spotted in these waters!
The cruise lasts around 2.5 hours, and you’ll have sparkling wine and snacks to enjoy as you watch the sun go down over the Atlantic. Not a bad way to spend an evening, right?
Since this is a private tour, you won’t have to share the experience with a bunch of strangers. I think it would be especially lovely for a romantic evening or a special occasion, although it’s also a great option for a group of friends or a family trip!
And with such fantastic reviews (read them here!), it’s easy to see why this cruise is so popular! If you’re looking to treat yourself to something special in Madeira, this would be high on my list.
Alternative for solo travelers

Now, I actually visited Madeira solo, so rather than booking a private boat, I opted for this shared sunset catamaran cruise instead, and I had a lovely time!
We sailed along the coast towards Cabo Girão, and the scenery was absolutely gorgeous. The crew were SO funny and had us laughing throughout the trip, which made the whole experience even better.
Unfortunately, I didn’t spot any dolphins this time, but the company offered me another cruise for free because we hadn’t seen any. I thought that was a really nice touch!
I’d definitely recommend this option if you’re traveling solo or looking for something more budget-friendly. You still get to enjoy Madeira’s gorgeous coastline at sunset, just without having to book an entire boat!
11. Get your adrenaline pumping on a beginner-friendly canyoning adventure

Tour Details
If you’re anything like me and love a bit of adventure, then canyoning in Madeira is definitely one for your bucket list! I didn’t manage to squeeze it into my trip, but I’ll definitely be giving this beginner-friendly canyoning tour a go next time.
Jumping into natural pools and sliding down rocks sounds like so much fun, and a great way to enjoy Madeira’s natural beauty!
This small-group tour takes place in Funchal’s Ecological Park, where you’ll explore Madeira’s rugged landscape in a totally different way. And don’t worry if you’ve never tried canyoning before, because this is a Level 1 experience designed with beginners in mind.
You’ll have two certified guides to show you the ropes (quite literally!), and all of the equipment is provided, including wetsuits, helmets, and proper canyoning boots. Hotel pickup from Funchal is included, so you don’t need to worry about transportation, either.
The whole experience lasts around five hours, with roughly 2.5 hours spent canyoning. They even take photos throughout the adventure, which you get for free afterward. I love that!
If you fancy getting out of your comfort zone and seeing Madeira’s wild side, I think this would be SO much fun – and the 1,400+ glowing reviews definitely back that up! It’s definitely going on my itinerary next time!
Already tried canyoning? Step it up with a Level 2 tour

If you’ve been canyoning before and fancy a bit more of a challenge, then this Level 2 canyoning adventure might be right up your street!
This tour takes you into the beautiful Curral das Freiras valley, where you’ll tackle a more challenging canyoning route through Madeira’s rugged mountain scenery. You’ll abseil down waterfalls and slide through natural rock formations as you go – sounds like a blast to me! It’s definitely a step up from the beginner experience, so I’d recommend this one if you already have some canyoning experience and are craving something more adventurous!
The experience lasts around 3.5 hours, with professional guides to help you navigate the route safely. For adventure travelers visiting Madeira, this one’s a no-brainer in my eyes.
Why We Book Tours with Viator
Viator is a trusted online booking system for tours around the world! We almost always book our tours using Viator for a couple of reasons:
12. Try Poncha!

Madeira might be famous for its wine, but there’s another local drink you absolutely have to try while you’re here: poncha!
It’s a traditional Madeiran cocktail made with sugarcane rum, honey, and citrus juice. It comes in lots of different flavors, and I can confirm that it’s delicious, especially the passion fruit flavor. But be warned, it’s also VERY strong!
I first tried poncha on the food tour that I did, but I encountered it several more times throughout my trip. I especially loved visiting Rei da Poncha, a lively little street bar tucked away in Funchal’s Old Town. It’s an informal, cash-only spot and it’s buzzing almost every night of the week (except for Sundays when it’s closed).
My advice with poncha would definitely be to start with one and see how you go. It’s strong stuff! And if you get a taste for it, Bar Number Two and Madeira Rum House are two more popular spots to check out around town.
13. Go scuba diving

Tour Details
One thing I’m a little sad I didn’t get to do in Madeira was scuba diving! The island has some incredible marine life, and after seeing so many pilot whales on my boat trip, I would have loved the chance to explore beneath the surface, too.
And I’m not PADI certified (yet, anyway!), so this introductory scuba diving experience really would have been perfect for me. You don’t need any previous diving experience or certifications to join, so it’s a great way to give scuba a go for the first time.
Everything is taken care of, including your equipment and a qualified instructor to guide you through the experience. You’ll start with a short theory lesson at the dive center, followed by a practice session in the pool to help you get comfortable with the equipment.
Then comes the exciting part: heading out into the ocean for a real dive! You’ll spend around 40 minutes underwater, with the chance to spot all sorts of marine life, including colorful parrotfish, rays, and maybe even a barracuda!
If you’ve always wanted to try diving, this is an ideal opportunity. It has hundreds of 5-star reviews that praise the guides’ patience and skill. It’s also a small-group experience, so you’ll have their undivided attention and support as you learn a new skill. Who knows, you might even come back from your trip with a new favorite hobby!
14. Ride the Funchal Cable Car and toboggan at the botanical gardens

Tour Details
Of course, you can’t miss Funchal’s famous cable car and gardens while you’re in Madeira, and I think this guided sightseeing tour is a fantastic way to do it! There’s SO much to see up in Monte that I actually got a bit overwhelmed by it all, so having a local guide to take you through it is a huge bonus and ensures you won’t miss out on any gems.
The tour starts with a cable car ride above Funchal, with beautiful views of the city and ocean as you climb into the mountains. Then it’s time to explore the gorgeous gardens!

I was absolutely blown away by Monte Palace Tropical Garden. I couldn’t believe how much there was to see, from Japanese gardens, two art museums, a waterfall, flamingos, and a collection of precious stones. And that’s just off the top of my head!
And of course, no trip up to Monte would be complete without the famous toboggan ride. This is one of Madeira’s quirkiest traditions, where two men dressed in white uniforms and straw hats steer you down the steep streets in a traditional wicker sled.
What I love about this tour is that it takes care of the transportation, tickets, and planning, so you can focus on enjoying the experience. This is also a great option for cruise passengers, too, as the cable car is close to the marina and the tour includes dock pickup!
15. Visit the Ronaldo Museum

Did you know that the world-famous footballer, Christano Ronaldo, hails from Madeira?
I’m not into football myself, so I only realized this when I noticed that the island’s airport is actually named after him!
You’ll see tributes to Ronaldo all over the island, and there’s even a museum dedicated to him along Funchal’s waterfront. I know I talked about museums earlier in this post, but I think this one deserves its own section!
So if you are into the beautiful game, I think the CR7 Museum in Funchal is well worth checking out. It’s dedicated to Ronaldo’s exceptional career, from his early days playing football in Madeira to becoming one of the biggest sporting stars in the world.
Inside, you’ll find over 100 trophies, including his five Ballon d’Or awards and four Golden Boots, along with football shirts, photographs, and other memorabilia. There’s even an augmented reality experience where you can take a virtual photo with Ronaldo himself!
But don’t leave without checking out the bronze statue of Ronaldo outside. If you look closely, you’ll notice that a certain part of his anatomy is much shinier than the rest. It seems that tourists can’t resist giving it a rub for good luck!
There’s also a merchandise store a few minutes’ walk away with a slightly creepy waxwork of Ronaldo you can check out as well. Every time I walked past the storefront, someone was posing next to him.

Where to Stay in Madeira, Portugal

Now that you’ve discovered all the amazing things to do in Madeira, it’s time to find the perfect place to stay! I highly recommend staying in Funchal, especially if it’s your first visit. It’s a charming city, and you can walk to lots of the top attractions (like the cable car). Most tours will pick you up from here, too, and it’s where all of the best restaurants are.
I’ve listed my top three hotel picks in Funchal below, including the hotel that I stayed at myself. Each of these makes a great base for exploring Madeira, no matter your budget or travel style.

Prices vary depending on the season and room type but typically range from €300 – €500 per night. Check all the options and book your luxury escape on Booking.com!
Mid-range – $$
In terms of location, Barceló Funchal Oldtown is hard to beat, but it offers more than just convenience! It’s a sleek and stylish hotel with a gorgeous rooftop pool, and you can enjoy the views over Funchal and the ocean from the comfort of a glamorous private cabana. Dreamy!
And hotels really don’t get more central than this one. It’s located on one of Funchal’s main pedestrian streets, and all of the best restaurants are just a short walk away – sometimes, mere steps, even! I walked past this hotel multiple times per day when I was staying in Funchal, so staying here really will put you at the heart of the action.
Prices start from around €200 per night. Find the best deals over at Booking.com!
Budget – $
For a budget-friendly stay in Madeira, Apartamentos Turísticos Atlantida is a fantastic choice – and I should know, because I stayed here! I showed up expecting a pretty small space, but I got a large room and bathroom, a separate living area, a fully equipped kitchen, and a cute little balcony to boot.
I really enjoyed my stay here as the hotel was very quiet, despite being in a super central location. I was able to walk everywhere in Funchal from here, and tour pickup was super easy. Plus, there was a chocolate shop right next door!
Prices start at around €90 per night, making it an excellent value for money. Read the great reviews and book your stay on Booking.com!

Renting a Car in Europe

Exploring Europe by car is a fantastic way to uncover hidden gems—think charming villages, scenic countryside, and off-the-beaten-path spots that trains and buses might miss. Driving here is generally straightforward, but it’s good to be prepared for some regional quirks.
We always use Discover Cars to book our rentals and can’t recommend them enough. It’s super easy to compare prices, check company ratings, find automatic cars (which can be tricky in Europe!), and add affordable full coverage insurance. What’s an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of buying a little plastic chip and swapping it into your phone, you just download it. It connects your phone to a local network in whatever country you’re visiting — no stores, no waiting, and no fiddling with tiny cards.
In simple terms, it’s the easiest way to get data and stay connected while traveling.
We’ve tested a bunch of eSIMs over the years, and after a few frustrating experiences, we’ve found our favorite — Airalo. It’s fast, reliable, and incredibly easy to use. You can set it up in minutes (even my mom managed it solo on her first try!), and the prices are some of the best out there.
