Where to Stay on the San Juan Islands: 2 Best Areas & Hotels

Planning a trip to the San Juan Islands but not sure where to stay? Look no further!

There are several islands to choose from, but Friday Harbor and Eastsound are the two bases we recommend most. In our experience, Friday Harbor is the busier and more convenient option, while Eastsound is quieter and closer to incredible hiking and scenery.

Your choice really comes down to the kind of trip you want. So to help you make that decision, we’ve put together the following guide to the best areas to stay on the San Juan Islands, plus our favorite hotels in each. Ready? Let’s get to it!

Overview of the Best Areas to Stay on the San Juan Islands

The San Juan Islands are fairly spread out, so choosing the right base can make a big difference to your trip. For most first-time visitors, we recommend Friday Harbor, especially if you’re only staying a few days or traveling without a car. Eastsound on Orcas Island is another great option if you prefer a quieter, more outdoorsy escape.

If you stay on Orcas Island, we definitely recommend bringing a car, as the ferry terminal, hiking trails, beaches, and viewpoints are spread out. A car isn’t essential in Friday Harbor, but it’s handy if you want to explore more of San Juan Island.

Whichever you choose, book your accommodation early during peak season. And if you’re bringing a vehicle, reserve your ferry crossing in advance too, as summer and holiday sailings can get very busy!

Here’s a quick overview of the two best areas to stay on the San Juan Islands:

• Friday Harbor – Best for first-time visitors – This walkable waterfront town puts the ferry terminal, whale-watching tours, shops, and restaurants within easy reach. Our top pick is Island Inn at 123 West, which is just a 5-minute walk from the ferry and offers maritime-inspired rooms, fireplaces in select suites, and a fantastic location for a car-free stay.

• Eastsound – Best for outdoor adventures and scenery – Orcas Island’s main village offers waterfront views, galleries, great restaurants, and easy access to Moran State Park and Mount Constitution. Our favorite stay here is The Landmark Inn on Orcas Island, located steps from Waterfront Park with full kitchens, spacious balconies, and plenty of room to settle in for a few days.

Friday Harbor

BEST FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS

Pros

• Ferry terminal, waterfront, boat tours, restaurants, and shops are all within walking distance
• Easiest base for a car-free weekend or a first trip to the San Juan Islands
• Excellent choice of whale-watching and kayaking tours departing nearby

Cons

• Central hotels can be expensive and fill up quickly during summer
• You’ll need a car, moped, or seasonal shuttle to reach attractions outside town

If you’re visiting the San Juan Islands for the very first time, Friday Harbor is hands down the best place to stay. 

We love Friday Harbor for first-timers because it has several hotels, restaurants, galleries, and whale-watching tours all clustered around the ferry terminal, so you can catch the ferry as a walk-on passenger and start enjoying the town straight away. 

Because the area is so compact, you can easily spend the day mooching around coffee shops and restaurants. You can also visit the San Juan Historical Museum, watch the ferries come and go, or join a boat tour right from the harbor. 

The main downside is that Friday Harbor gets very busy during summer, and its convenient location often comes with higher hotel rates. You’ll also need some form of transportation if you want to see more of San Juan Island. For example, Lime Kiln Point State Park is around 9 miles (14.5 kilometers) away, while South Beach, American Camp, and Roche Harbor are also outside town, so you’ll need a car, taxi, bike, or seasonal shuttle to reach them. 

All in all, though, Friday Harbor ticks all the boxes for a classic San Juan Islands stay. It’s lively, walkable, and incredibly convenient for an easygoing coastal getaway. 

Friday Harbor Grand – $$$

If you’re looking to treat yourself on your trip, Friday Harbor Grand should definitely be on your radar! 

We absolutely adore this historic B&B with its vaulted suites, soaking tubs, private decks, and a parlor complete with a Steinway Grand piano. The property itself was originally built in the 1880s as a home for a county judge, and it still has all the warmth and character of a private home. 

The location here also couldn’t be better. The ferry terminal, waterfront, and whale-watching departures are less than a 10-minute walk away, so you’ll have the best of Friday Harbor right on your doorstep. 

With prices ranging from around $225 to $350+ per night, we think it’s worth the splurge for a special occasion trip or a slower two-night stay, especially if you appreciate a relaxed, hosted atmosphere rather than a large hotel. 

If Friday Harbor Grand is fully booked, Friday Harbor House is another romantic option just five minutes from the ferry and waterfront. It sits on a bluff overlooking the marina, and many of the rooms come with private balconies, gas fireplaces, and oversized spa tubs.

We also really love The KirkHouse Bed & Breakfast, a charming historic property with a wraparound veranda and gourmet breakfast. It’s around a 10-minute walk from the ferry terminal and less than a 5-minute walk from the San Juan Historical Museum.

Island Inn – $$

If you’re traveling without a car, it’s hard to find a more convenient option than the Island Inn. This boutique hotel is only one block from the ferry terminal, so you can step off the boat and be in your room a few minutes later! 

We love this hotel because there’s a good mix of rooms to choose from, including more compact rooms for travelers who only need the basics and larger penthouses with kitchens, gas fireplaces, and steam showers. Some rooms also give you access to a shared communal living area where you can hang out between activities.

Rooms generally range from $175 to $450 USD per night, depending on the room type and time of year, which is excellent value for such a central location. 

If you need a backup, the Bird Rock Hotel is another lovely option just a few blocks from the ferry. The building dates back to 1891, and there’s a variety of rooms to choose from, including simple options with shared bathrooms and spacious suites overlooking the sea. 

Friday Harbor Suites – $

If you’re traveling with kids or simply want a bit more room to spread out, Friday Harbor Suites is a practical, budget-friendly choice worth considering. 

Every room here is a suite with a fireplace, microwave, refrigerator, and private balcony or patio. There’s also an outdoor hot tub, game room, and mini movie theater, so you have plenty to keep everyone entertained. The on-site cafe is another handy perk when it’s open from March to November. 

In terms of location, the ferry terminal and waterfront are around a 10- to 15-minute walk away, so the hotel isn’t quite as central as Island Inn. However, the San Juan Historical Museum is only half a block away, and we think the extra space is well worth the slightly longer walk if you’re staying with family. 

You can expect suites to typically cost between $160 and $350+ USD per night, making it an affordable alternative to booking multiple hotel rooms. 

Eastsound

BEST FOR OUTDOOR ADVENTURE AND SCENERY

Pros

• Beautiful waterfront setting with a relaxed village atmosphere
• Easy driving access to Moran State Park, Mount Constitution, beaches, and hiking trails
• Good selection of independent restaurants, galleries, and shops

Cons

• A car is essential for reaching the ferry terminal and most island attractions
• Fewer hotels than Friday Harbor, so the best options fill up quickly

If hiking, scenic drives, and lazy afternoons by the water sound like your kind of trip, we think you’ll absolutely love Eastsound. It’s the main village on Orcas Island, with a handful of fantastic restaurants, galleries, and shops clustered around the waterfront. There’s enough here to make your stay easy, but it still feels peaceful and far removed from the bustle of Friday Harbor.

Another huge advantage of staying in Eastsound is its proximity to Moran State Park. The park is home to several lakes, miles of forested trails, and Mount Constitution, the highest point in the San Juan Islands, so you can easily fill your days with hikes, lake visits, and scenic drives.  

One thing to keep in mind about staying in Eastsound is that you’ll definitely need a car. The ferry terminal is around a 15- to 20-minute drive from the town center, and the island’s beaches, trailheads, and scenic viewpoints are also pretty spread out, so a car definitely makes things a lot easier. 

For us, Eastsound is all about slowing down. You can grab breakfast in the village, head out for a hike, and return for dinner by the water, making it a fantastic choice for couples, outdoor lovers, and anyone craving a quieter island escape. Just make sure to book early, as accommodation is limited and the most popular stays get snapped up quickly! 

Outlook Inn on Orcas Island – $$$

For our top luxury pick in Eastsound, we cannot recommend Outlook Inn on Orcas Island enough! 

Rooms here are spread across the historic main building, East Wing, Bay View, and Water’s Edge. If you’re celebrating something special, we’d definitely choose a Water’s Edge suite for the private balcony, soaking tub, fireplace, and gorgeous views! 

Location-wise, you’ll be just steps from the town center and Waterfront Park. However, Moran State Park is around 4.5 miles (7.2 kilometers) away, while the ferry terminal is roughly 9.5 miles (15.3 kilometers) from the property, so you’ll definitely need a car to make the most of your stay. 

As for pricing, you can expect rooms here to generally range from $125 to $450+ USD per night depending on the season and room type. 

The Landmark Inn – $$

If you’d like more space and the option to cook, the Landmark Inn is an excellent mid-range option in Eastsound. 

This property has 15 condo-style units with full kitchens, large balconies, and smart TVs. There’s also an outdoor area with a fire pit and BBQs, which is perfect for an easy evening at home. Even better, the hotel is just a short stroll to the town center, so you won’t need to drive every time you want to head out.

Apartments here usually range from $125 to $450 USD per night. In our opinion, this is a great deal for families and groups, especially since you can save money by cooking a few meals yourself.

If the Landmark Inn is all booked up on your preferred dates, Kangaroo House Bed & Breakfast is another lovely option on the north side of town. This historic inn was built in 1907 and serves up a seriously delicious scratch-made organic breakfast every morning. 

Top Activities on the San Juan Islands

The San Juan Islands are all about getting outdoors, and some of the best experiences here take you right into that incredible scenery! From paddling alongside wildlife to climbing high above the forest, there are so many fun ways to explore. Here are a few activities we’d definitely prioritize while you’re here.

• Kayak through the San Juan Islands – If you want to experience the islands from the water, this full-day kayaking tour is hard to beat! You’ll paddle along Haro Strait looking for seals, porpoises, bald eagles, and maybe even orcas before stopping for lunch on a quiet beach. You’ll also visit Lime Kiln Point State Park, and no previous kayaking experience is needed!

• Go whale watching from Friday Harbor – This four-hour whale-watching cruise was our FAVORITE thing we did in the San Juans! You’ll cruise across the Salish Sea searching for orcas, humpbacks, sea lions, porpoises, bald eagles, and more. We loved the excitement of never knowing what might pop up next, and there’s a heated cabin when you need to warm up.

• Climb into the treetops on Lopez Island – For something completely different, this canopy climbing adventure takes you up into trees that can reach 200 feet (61 meters) tall! Professional guides teach you how to use ropes and ascenders before you climb into the canopy for an incredible perspective over the forest. With just six travelers per group, it feels like a real adventure!

• Go rock climbing on Mount Erie – If you want to add a bigger challenge to your trip, this full-day climbing experience near Anacortes looks epic! A professional guide will teach you skills like knot tying, belaying, and rappelling before helping you tackle routes suited to your experience level. Plus, the views over the Salish Sea are pretty hard to beat!

• Look for whales at Lime Kiln Point State Park – You don’t necessarily need a boat to search for whales! Nicknamed “Whale Watch Park,” Lime Kiln Point State Park is one of our favorite places to scan Haro Strait for whales, seals, and porpoises from shore. Even if nothing swims past, the historic lighthouse and rocky coastline make this spot well worth visiting.
