But it’s also quite spread out, so choosing the right area upfront makes a big difference.

Overview of the Best Areas to Stay in Portland 

Portland is split in half by the Willamette River, and each side of the city has a very different feel. On the west side, you’ve got Downtown and the Pearl District, which have a more polished feel and are very convenient for first-time visitors, as this is where many of the main attractions are located. 

Across the river, the east side feels more local and creative. Areas like Hawthorne, Belmont, and Southeast Portland are known for their independent shops and vintage stores, and they boast an exciting food scene! It’s a bit less touristy, and we really liked the more laid-back neighborhood feel here.

Portland is quite spread out, so getting around usually means driving or using Uber or Lyft. There is public transport, but it’s not always the most efficient way to get between areas. I also don’t really recommend walking around a lot at night. 

• Downtown Portland –Best for first-time visitors – The most central and convenient area, with easy access to top sights and the waterfront. The Mark Spencer Hotel is a refined but reasonably priced option with a super walkable location.

• Pearl District –Best for upscale travelers – A trendy and polished neighborhood known for its galleries, boutiques, and excellent dining scene. Hampton Inn And Suites is a reliable and stylish stay with modern rooms and a great location near Powell’s City of Books.

• Northwest/Nob Hill –Best for great restaurants & green spaces – A charming, walkable area filled with local boutiques and cafés, offering easy access to parks. Silver Cloud Hotel is a solid pick with comfortable rooms and a convenient spot near NW 23rd Avenue.

• Southeast – Best for local culture – A creative, slightly edgy part of the city with vintage shops and food carts, creating a strong local vibe. Tiny Digs – Hotel of Tiny Houses is a unique and fun stay with individually themed tiny homes, and it’s in a great location for exploring the area.

Downtown Portland

BEST FOR FIRST TIME VISITORS

Downtown Portland is the most convenient place to stay if it’s your first time visiting. This is where we stayed because we wanted to have the city’s main attractions on our doorstep. It made exploring really straightforward, and it’s definitely a smart choice if you’re short on time.

We liked how easy it was to get around from here. You’ve got spots like Pioneer Courthouse Square right in the center, along with the Portland Art Museum, Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, and Tom McCall Waterfront Park, just a short stroll away. The waterfront is also a great place for a walk, especially on a clear day, and it’s a nice way to break up time in the city.

There are plenty of restaurants, coffee shops, and stores nearby, so you’re never short on options. That said, this area does feel a bit more commercial and less charming than other parts of Portland, and we found it was a bit quieter in the evenings. 

Still, we think Downtown is a great base if you want to be close to everything and keep things simple. It’s especially well-suited to first-time visitors or anyone only in the city for a short stay.

The Ritz-Carlton, Portland – $$$ 

The Ritz-Carlton is easily one of the most luxurious places to stay in Portland, and it’s perfect if you want a high-end experience right in the heart of Downtown. The location is ideal, with easy access to many of Portland’s top attractions!

The hotel has a sleek, modern feel, with beautifully designed rooms and incredible views over the city from the higher floors. There’s also a full-service spa, a stunning indoor pool, and a few great dining options on site.

It’s a great choice if you’re looking to treat yourself to something special. Rooms here usually start at around $450 USD per night.

Another top choice, The Nines, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Portland is a standout right in the center, set above Pioneer Courthouse Square. It offers elegant rooms, a rooftop restaurant, and a more classic luxury feel.

Kimpton Hotel Vintage Portland by IHG is also a great backup nearby, located in a central downtown spot close to shops and restaurants. It has a fun, wine-themed concept with daily tastings available – how cool is that?

The Mark Spencer Hotel – $$

The Mark Spencer Hotel is comfortable and full of character. It sits right on the edge of Downtown and the Pearl District, so it’s in a top-notch location within walking distance of some of the best shops, restaurants, and attractions in the city.

The hotel has a classic, elegant feel, with spacious rooms and a welcoming atmosphere. We especially like the little extras here, like the complimentary afternoon tea and cookies, which give it a more personal touch!

It’s a really solid choice if you want a reliable stay in a great location without spending too much. Rooms here usually start at around $200 USD per night.

If The Mark Spencer is booked up, Dossier is another great option in the downtown core, close to shopping and public transit. It offers stylish rooms with a modern feel and an awesome seasonal restaurant on site, plus it’s pet-friendly! 

Hotel Lucia is also a lovely alternative nearby, located in a central historic building just steps from Powell’s City of Books. It has a cozy, boutique feel, and it’s decorated with photography from the famous Oregonian photographer David Hume Kennedy. 

Courtyard by Marriott Portland City Center – $ 

Courtyard by Marriott is a great budget-friendly option if you want something modern and central. It’s located right in Downtown, so you’re within walking distance of plenty of restaurants, shops, and attractions.

The hotel has a clean, contemporary feel, with comfortable rooms and everything you need for a short stay. There’s also a small fitness center and an on-site café for quick meals or coffee in the morning.

It’s not the most unique place to stay, but it’s reliable, well-priced, and very convenient, so you can’t really go wrong! Rooms here usually start at around $140 USD per night.

Heathman Hotel is another great option nearby, located just a short walk from the Portland Art Museum. It’s a clean and modern lifestyle hotel, and it’s actually well-known for its library-themed lobby, so we think it’s a great spot for book lovers.

If you want to be close to music venues and nightlife, McMenamins Crystal Hotel is a fun and quirky alternative in the heart of downtown. It has a really unique vibe, with themed rooms, a soaking pool, and live entertainment on site.

Pearl District 

BEST FOR UPSCALE TRAVELERS

The Pearl District is one of the most stylish areas to stay in Portland, and it’s a great choice if you want something a bit more polished. This former warehouse district has been completely transformed into a hub of galleries and boutiques, and many of the city’s best restaurants can be found here.

We really liked how walkable this area is. You can easily spend your days browsing independent shops, stopping for coffee, and trying out different restaurants without needing to go far. One of the standout attractions here is Powell’s City of Books, which is famous for being one of the world’s largest independent bookstores. It’s definitely worth a visit, even if you’re only popping in for a quick look, although bookworms could easily spend hundreds of dollars here!

There’s also a strong food and drink scene here, with plenty of trendy breweries and wine bars, as well as upscale dining spots. It feels a bit more refined than other parts of Portland, but still keeps that creative, laid-back edge the city is known for. All in all, we think the Pearl District is a great pick if you want a central, walkable base with a slightly more upscale feel.

Residence Inn by Marriott Portland Downtown/Pearl District – $$$ 

Residence Inn is a great choice if you’re looking for something upscale and spacious, and it just so happens to be located right in the heart of one of the city’s best neighborhoods! Staying here puts you within easy walking distance of the Pearl District’s best shops and restaurants, not to mention famous spots like Powell’s City of Books.

The hotel has a modern, apartment-style setup, which makes it ideal if you’re staying for a few nights or just want a bit more room to spread out. You’ve got a full kitchen and a comfortable living area, and access to amenities like a swanky indoor pool and fitness center.

Breakfast is also included, which is always a nice bonus. Rooms here usually start at around $350 USD per night.

Cambria Hotel Portland – Pearl District is another great option nearby, close to restaurants and breweries. It has a modern feel, with stylish rooms and a rooftop bar that’s perfect for unwinding in the evening.

Renu Suites at The Burlington Portland – $$

Renu Suites at The Burlington Portland is a great budget-friendly option if you want to stay in the Pearl District without spending too much. The location is a big highlight, as you’re within walking distance of many of the area’s top spots, as well as Union Station.

The setup here is more apartment-style, which gives you a bit more space and the option to self-cater easily. The units are nothing super fancy, but they’re clean, homey, and well-maintained, so we think this is an ideal option if you want a central base at a lower price point. Apartments here usually start at around $200 USD per night.

If Renu Suites at The Burlington is booked up, The Hoxton, Portland is another great option, just a short walk away, located on the edge of the Pearl District. It has a trendy, boutique feel, with stylish interiors and a lively rooftop bar.

Canopy by Hilton Portland Pearl District is also an excellent alternative in a central location, close to Powell’s City of Books and local restaurants. It offers modern rooms and free bikes for guests – Portland is one of the most cycle-friendly cities in the US, so this means you’ll be able to get around like a true local! 

Hampton Inn And Suites – $

We think that Hampton Inn And Suites offers amazing value for money in the Pearl District! It’s not super stylish, but it’s modern, and it boasts a great location, right in the heart of the neighborhood. Staying here means you’ve got many of the area’s trendiest cafes and restaurants right on your doorstep, including the famous Voodoo Donuts, which is a huge bonus for anyone with a sweet tooth (like me!)

The hotel has a clean, modern feel, with spacious rooms and a reliable setup that works well for most types of travelers. There’s also a small indoor pool and a really well-equipped fitness center that’s definitely a step up from most hotel gyms. Rooms here usually start at around $130 USD per night.

If Hampton Inn And Suites is sold out for your travel dates, Harlow Hotel is another great alternative nearby in a central location within the Pearl District. It offers a boutique-style stay for less, and a generous cancellation policy to help you stay flexible.

Northwest/Nob Hill

BEST FOR GREAT RESTAURANTS & GREEN SPACES

Northwest Portland, often called Nob Hill or the Alphabet District, is a charming and walkable area that feels a bit more relaxed than Downtown and the Pearl District. It actually sits just outside Downtown, so staying here means you’ll be close to the action without being right in the thick of it. It makes for a really nice balance!

The heart of the area is NW 23rd Avenue, which is lined with boutiques, coffee shops, and some of the city’s best restaurants. We really liked wandering around here and stopping for coffee, as it was a great way to soak up the local atmosphere and get a taste of what it might be like to live in Portland! It feels more residential than Downtown, but there’s still plenty going on, especially in the evenings when the restaurants fill up.

Another big draw is how easy it is to get outside. Washington Park is just a short distance away, and it’s home to the International Rose Test Garden, scenic viewpoints, and plenty of walking trails. It’s a great place to take a break from the city without having to travel far.

Inn at Northrup Station – $$$

Inn at Northrup Station is easily one of the most unique places to stay in Northwest Portland. It really stands out thanks to its bold, colorful design, and it’s located right by the streetcar line and just a short walk from NW 23rd Avenue, which makes exploring the city a breeze!

You’ve also got great restaurants right on your doorstep, and four parks less than a mile away. The hotel offers spacious, apartment-style suites, which makes it a great option if you’re staying for a few nights or just want a bit more room.

You’ll get a full kitchen and separate living area, plus perks like complimentary breakfast and parking, which is a big bonus in this part of the city. Rooms here usually start at around $250 USD per night, which we think is great value for a place like this.

Silver Cloud Hotel – $$

Silver Cloud Hotel is a top-rated option in Nob Hill, and it’s an especially great choice if location is your top priority. It’s set just steps from NW 23rd Avenue, so you’re within easy walking distance of some of Portland’s best shops and restaurants. 

The hotel has a clean, modern feel, with spacious rooms and super-friendly staff that make this place feel like a true home away from home! There’s also an on-site restaurant and fitness center, so you’ve got everything you need. Rooms here usually start at around $160 USD per night.

Another favorite choice, Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Portland-Northwest Downtown by IHG is a great option nearby, close to Nob Hill and downtown. The decor is slightly dated, but it’s super clean and comfortable, and the included breakfast gets rave reviews.

For something a bit more glamorous, Hotel DeLuxe is another affordable option, a little closer to downtown. It boasts a vintage-inspired design and a fine-dining restaurant on site! 

Park Lane Suites & Inn – $

Park Lane Suites & Inn is a great budget-friendly option if you want more space without stretching your budget too far. It’s located right on the edge of Nob Hill, so you’re within walking distance of NW 23rd Avenue, while also being close to Washington Park.

The rooms here are larger than average, with many offering separate living areas and kitchenettes, which makes it a great choice for longer stays. The style is fairly simple, but the units are clean and practical, so we think that Park Lane is a great option if you want a base that’s quiet and spacious, but still central. Rooms here usually start at around $140 USD per night.

If Park Lane Suites is unavailable, Portland International Guesthouse is another great option nearby, close to Washington Park and lots of restaurants. It’s set on a quiet, residential street with a more homely, shared-house feel. 

Failing that, Northwest Portland Hostel is a fun, budget-friendly alternative close to NW 23rd. It offers both private rooms and dorms, and the social atmosphere here is great for meeting other travelers.

Southeast Portland 

BEST FOR LOCAL CULTURE

• Authentic, local area that really shows off Portland’s famous quirkiness

• Further from major tourist attractions
• Fewer hotels

Southeast Portland is where you’ll really get a feel for the city’s creative, slightly offbeat personality. If you’ve heard the phrase “Keep Portland Weird,” this is exactly the kind of place it’s talking about! It’s a little less polished than areas like the Pearl District or Nob Hill, but that’s part of the appeal.

The heart of Southeast is along streets like Hawthorne and Belmont, where you’ll find vintage shops, indie bookstores, record stores, and a constantly changing lineup of food trucks. We had so much fun wandering around here and checking out all of the unique shops – the hours just flew by! Southeast Portland also boasts an amazing food scene, with street carts everywhere, so a lot of the best food we had in the city was around here.

This area is best suited to travelers who want a more local, lived-in experience rather than a typical tourist stay. In fact, we think it’s a great choice if you’ve been to Portland before and want to explore beyond the main sights this time around. It’s especially popular with younger travelers and creatives thanks to its energetic, alternative vibe. 

It’s worth noting that you’ll need to rely on Uber or a car to reach downtown and other parts of the city. Still, if you’re happy with that trade-off, Southeast is easily one of the most interesting places to stay in Portland!

Jupiter NEXT – $$$ 

Jupiter NEXT is one of the coolest places to stay in Southeast Portland, and it perfectly matches the neighborhood’s creative, edgy vibe. It’s located right on East Burnside, so you’re within easy reach of some great bars and live music venues.

The hotel itself is really lovely. It’s housed in a historic building, but the rooms are sleek and modern, and many boast floor-to-ceiling windows to give you great views over the city.

There’s freshly brewed coffee for guests in the lobby each morning, and the on-site bar and restaurant is also really cozy, with an interesting mix of greenery and industrial-chic design. Rooms here usually start at around $250 USD per night.

Tiny Digs – Hotel of Tiny Houses – $$

Tiny Digs – Hotel of Tiny Houses is easily one of the most unique stays in Portland, and it’s such a fun option if you’re looking for something a little different! Instead of traditional rooms, you’ll be staying in your own fully self-contained tiny house, each with its own theme and personality. A quirky stay like this is just perfect for a quirky city like Portland!

The location is great too, set in Southeast Portland within easy reach of Hawthorne and Belmont, so you’ll have plenty of shops and food spots nearby. Despite the size, the tiny houses are surprisingly well-designed, with clever use of space and everything you need for a comfortable stay. Homes here usually start at around $175 USD per night.

KEX Hotel is a great alternative nearby, located in the Central Eastside with easy access to bars and restaurants. It’s a cross between a boutique hotel and a hostel, and it features a sauna and fitness center, as well as stylish rooms and a lively, communal atmosphere – in short, it’s very Portland! 

Hotel Grand Stark – $

Hotel Grand Stark is a great budget-friendly option if you still want something stylish and well-located in Southeast Portland. It sits in the Central Eastside, which puts you within walking distance of plenty of great food and coffee spots, and tons of fun bars.

Despite its modest price tag, the hotel has a boutique feel, with nicely decorated rooms that balance comfort and style without pushing the price too high. There’s also a family-friendly Italian restaurant on site, which is handy if you don’t feel like heading out again after a long day of exploring. Rooms here usually start at around $140 USD per night.

Top Activities to do in Portland 

Now that you’ve picked the perfect place to stay in Portland, it’s time to dive into the experiences that make this city so fun to explore. From chasing waterfalls and cruising along the coast to sampling local treats and seeing the skyline from above, there’s no shortage of memorable things to do here. These are the tours and activities that we genuinely loved and would recommend adding to your itinerary!

• See Multnomah Falls – Multnomah Falls is one of the most iconic sights in Oregon, and it’s an easy day trip from Portland. We loved visiting because it’s such a dramatic waterfall, with a scenic bridge halfway up that gives you an incredible view. If you don’t have a car, this guided tour is a really easy way to get there and explore the wider Columbia River Gorge.

• Take a scenic flight over Portland – Seeing Portland from above is such a cool experience, especially on a clear day when you can spot Mount Hood in the distance. This scenic flight gives you a completely different perspective of the city, flying over the Willamette River and downtown, as well as the surrounding landscapes. It’s definitely a bit of a splurge, but we think it’s worth it for something memorable.

• Visit Cannon Beach – Cannon Beach is one of the most beautiful spots on the Oregon coast, and it’s famous for Haystack Rock and its wide, sandy shoreline. We loved how wild and rugged it feels compared to the city. This day tour made it super easy to visit, and we really appreciated how much time we had to explore all of the coastal stops.

• Taste Portland’s famous donuts – Portland is known for its quirky donut scene, and trying a few is basically a must while you’re here. A guided donut tour is a fun way to sample the best spots without having to plan it all yourself, and you’ll get a mix of classic flavors and more unusual creations along the way – yum! 

• Bike your way around the city – Portland is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the US, so exploring on two wheels just makes sense! We loved this guided bike tour because it took us through different neighborhoods and along the river to see some of the city’s top sights, all while giving us a feel for local life here.
