Planning a trip to Tahiti and wondering where to stay? You’re in for a real treat! 

Tahiti is often just seen as a quick stopover island before heading to Bora Bora or Moorea, but it’s actually a stunning destination in its own right with dramatic volcanic peaks, lush waterfalls, and black sand beaches (my fave!). 

In our opinion, it’s definitely worth spending a few days here if you’re looking to experience a more authentic side of French Polynesia. But if you’re not sure where to base yourself, don’t worry. We’ve put together this guide to the two best areas in Tahiti, plus top hotels worth checking out.

Overview of the Best Areas to Stay in Tahiti

Tahiti is a fairly large and spread-out island, so choosing the right area to stay can actually make a big difference for your trip. 

For most people, the two best bases are the West Coast around Punaauia and Fa’a’ā, and the North Coast around Papeete and Pīra’e. 

If you’re picturing more relaxed, scenic vibes with lagoon views, sunsets over Moorea, and easy access to the beach, the West Coast is usually your best bet. It also has the advantage of being conveniently close to the airport, making it a great option for first-time visitors and shorter stays. 

Your other option is the North Coast, which tends to be the best fit for travelers who want to be closer to the local markets, restaurants, shops, and the ferry terminal. 

One thing to keep in mind is that Tahiti isn’t very walkable outside of central Papeete. Major sights, beaches, and viewpoints are spread out around the island, so you’ll have to rely on taxis, hotel transfers, tours, or rental cars to get around if you want to explore lots of different waterfalls, beaches, and attractions. This won’t necessarily be a problem; it’s just something to think about as you choose your accommodation. 

Before we get into the specific hotels we love, here’s a quick breakdown of both areas and our top hotel in each: 

• The West Coast (Punaauia & Fa’a’ā) – Best for first-time visitors – This area offers resort-style vibes and easy access to the airport. Our top pick here is Ninamu Pearl Guest House, an elegant hillside retreat with lagoon views that will genuinely take your breath away.

• The North Coast (Papeete & Pīra’e) – Best for shops & restaurants – This is the busier side of the island, perfect if you want to be close to city conveniences and the ferry terminal. Our top pick here is Maitai Express Tahiti, a modern city hotel just steps from the Port de Papeete.

The West Coast (Punaauia & Fa’a’ā)

BEST FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS

Pros

• Stunning sunset views over the lagoon and Moorea

• Very close and convenient to Faa’a International Airport

• You will need a taxi or rental car to reach Papeete’s markets and restaurants
• Fewer dining options within walking distance compared to the North Coast

If you’re visiting Tahiti for the first time, the West Coast, especially around Punaauia and Fa’a’ā, is usually the easiest and most enjoyable place to stay. It gives you that classic tropical-island feel, but it’s still close enough to Papeete if you want to do some exploring. 

This part of the island feels noticeably calmer and more relaxed than staying in Papeete. It’s also one of the most convenient areas to stay on the island if you’re arriving late or only staying a few nights, since the airport is just a short drive away.

When it comes to accommodation, the West Coast is home to some of Tahiti’s best resorts, and it’s easy to see why. The water here is calm, and there are plenty of places where you can sit outside with fresh seafood or a cocktail and watch the light change over Moorea at sunset. 

One thing to keep in mind is that this area is pretty spread out, so you probably won’t be able to walk to many places. If you want lots of restaurants, markets, and nightlife right outside your door, Papeete may be a better option. However, if you just want a place where you can jump off the plane, drop your bags, and feel like you’re officially in a tropical oasis straight away, this is the place to do it.

InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa – $$$

Our number one luxury pick on the West Coast is the InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa. 

This is the largest luxury resort on the island, and the views and vibes here are nothing short of incredible. The property itself is just a 5-minute drive from the airport, and when you go to book, you’ll have a choice between traditional hotel-style rooms and overwater bungalows (the dream!). 

Once you’re all checked in, you’ll have access to a diving center and open-air aquarium, as well as two freshwater infinity pools and a swim-up bar. The InterContinental is also known for hosting one of the most popular traditional Tahitian dance shows on the island, and you definitely do not want to miss it!

In terms of pricing, you can expect prices to start around $350 USD per night and climb to $700+ USD per night. 

If the InterContinental is fully booked, Tahiti Lagoon Resort is an excellent backup. It’s located a bit further north on the coast (about a 5-minute walk away from Toaroto Beach), but it’s just as gorgeous as the InterContinental and also offers overwater bungalows. 

Ninamu Pearl Guest House – $$

Next up is the Ninamu Pearl Guest House, and it’s actually our top pick on the West Coast! 

This particular hotel feels much more intimate and relaxed compared to the larger resorts. And because it’s perched in the hills, the views over the lagoon and across to Moorea are seriously impressive, especially around sunset. Many of the suites also come with their own private plunge pool or terrace, which makes those sunset views even better!  

Location-wise, it’s only about a 15-minute drive to the airport and a 5-minute drive to Toaroto Beach. And in terms of pricing, rates typically start from around $150 to $250+ USD per night, which is incredible value for such a gorgeous location.

Kahea Ragni – $

For an even more budget-friendly stay on Tahiti’s West Coast, we recommend Kahea Ragni. This is an elegant, adults-only bed and breakfast that’s just a 10-minute drive from the airport. 

The property has a lovely swimming pool with incredible views of the sea, a lush tropical garden, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it easy to unwind after a long flight or a full day exploring. Breakfast is, of course, included, which is always a nice bonus in Tahiti, and there’s also a shared kitchen space if you want to save a little money by preparing some of your afternoon or evening meals yourself. 

Price-wise, you can expect rates to typically start around $115 USD and range to $160+ USD per night, depending on the room type and season. 

The North Coast (Papeete & Pīra’e)

BEST FOR SHOPS & RESTAURANTS

Pros

• Walking distance to Papeete Market, shops, and local dining
• Extremely convenient for catching the ferry to Moorea
• Great for short stopovers or pre/post-cruise nights

Cons

• Lacks the relaxed, resort-style beach vibe of the West Coast
• Can feel busy and commercial compared to other parts of the island

If you want to stay somewhere a bit more lively and convenient, the North Coast is usually your best bet. Staying around Papeete or nearby Pīra’e puts you close to dozens of restaurants, shops, markets, and ferry connections, making it a practical choice for shorter stays and anyone who prefers to be closer to the action. 

Papeete itself is well worth spending some time in, even if you don’t stay on the North Coast. The city definitely has a buzz, but it’s not overwhelming, and there’s enough going on to fill a day or two between island hopping or flights. One of the highlights is the Papeete Market (Le Marché), where you can find lots of tasty snacks, handmade crafts, black pearls, and colorful clothing. 

In the evenings, the waterfront comes alive with “roulottes,” which are open-air food trucks serving fresh seafood, crepes, and local comforts. Honestly, it is one of the best places on the island to eat some seriously good food without spending a fortune, and the atmosphere feels a lot more local and authentic compared to resort dining.

Another big advantage is the location. The ferry terminal to Moorea is right here, which makes early departures or overnight trips a piece of cake! 

This part of Tahiti is definitely more practical than it is picturesque, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing if you’re looking to stay somewhere super convenient. 

Hilton Hotel Tahiti – $$$

For our top luxury pick near Papeete, we cannot recommend the Hilton Hotel Tahiti enough! It strikes the perfect balance between feeling polished and comfortable, while still being practical for ferry trips or nights before a flight. 

If you’re staying for a couple of days, you’ll have plenty to do, as there’s a large outdoor pool with private cabanas, three restaurants, and two cocktail bars to enjoy. Some rooms also include kitchenettes, which are super handy for preparing a packed beach lunch or keeping snacks and drinks on hand.

As far as location goes, you’re ideally situated just a 7-minute drive to the airport, a 5-minute drive to the Papeete Ferry Terminal (depending on traffic), and a 20-minute walk to Hokule’a beach. Price-wise, you can expect rates to typically start around $520 USD per night and climb to $760+ USD per night.

Another fabulous option is the Tahiti Pearl Beach Resort. This is an oceanfront hotel known for its stunning black sand beach on Matavai Bay, and it’s only about a 10 to 15-minute drive to downtown Papeete. 

If you’re looking for something as close to the ferry terminal as possible, we recommend checking out Boutique Hotel Kon Tiki Tahiti. This is a modern, eco-friendly hotel with one of the best rooftop bars in the city! 

Maitai Express Tahiti – $$

For our mid-range pick near Papeete, we always recommend Maitai Express Tahiti. The hotel makes a really convenient base for exploring Papeete, especially if you want shops, restaurants, and cultural sites within easy reach. 

It’s particularly handy if you’re only staying a night or two before heading to Moorea or another island, since you’re literally steps from the Port de Papeete. You’re also only a 2-minute walk to the Papeete Market, meaning you can roll out of bed and start browsing the stalls within minutes (dangerous, but fun!).

Prices usually begin at around $180 USD per night and can go up to $560+ USD for peak dates.

If you need another option, Hotel Reva Tahiti is also one of our favorite modern, mid-range picks! Like Maitai Express, Hotel Reva is also just a short walk to Papeete Market and the ferry terminal. 

We also really love the Royal Tahitien. It’s a bit further away from the ferry terminal (about a 10-minute drive), but it’s well worth it for the private black sand beach! 

Mahana Lodge – $

If you’re looking to do Tahiti on a budget, Mahana Lodge is definitely worth checking out! It’s located within walking distance of Papeete city center, the ferry terminal, and Hokule’a beach, so you’ll have most of what you need within easy reach.

The vibe here is much more social than your typical hotel. It’s closer to a hostel-style stay, with both private and shared rooms available. This makes it a great option for solo travelers, backpackers, or anyone hoping to meet other people on their travels. 

Prices here are very reasonable for Tahiti, starting from around $80 USD per night for a bed in a shared dorm, while private rooms typically start at around $250+ USD per night, depending on the season and room type.
