A lot of first-time visitors don’t realize that my home city is made up of very diverse neighborhoods. From lively nightlife districts to laid-back beachy suburbs, each one has its own personality, so I’m here to break them all down for you.

Perth is compact and easy to navigate, with reliable public transport, but where you stay can completely shape the feel of your trip. So no matter your travel style, we’re here to help you find your perfect spot.

Trying to decide where to stay in Perth? Don’t worry—it doesn’t have to feel overwhelming! I was born in this city and lived here for the first 20 or so years of my life, so I can help simplify things. 

The good news is that Perth is very well-connected by public transport, and it’s super easy to navigate. Staying in one area won’t stop you from exploring others, but I do recommend choosing an area that puts you nice and central, and matches your personality.

Below is a quick overview of Perth’s top areas to help you get started. Then, I’ll do a deep dive into each one later on in the blog, so have a quick read now and see which parts of the city interest you the most! 

• Perth City Centre / CBD – The bustling heart of the city, filled with shopping malls, restaurants, and easy public transport links. Novotel Perth Murray Street is a modern hotel offering comfort and convenience right in the city centre.

• Northbridge – Perth’s cultural and nightlife hub is always buzzing with bars, street food, and art spaces. Alex Hotel provides stylish and central accommodations for those who want to be close to the action.

• East Perth / Burswood – This is a family-friendly, riverside area with parks, the Perth Mint, and easy access to Optus Stadium and Crown Perth. Crown Promenade Perth is a solid contemporary hotel with river views and modern amenities.

Where to Stay in Perth

Perth City Centre (CBD)

Perth’s CBD is the city’s energetic hub. I’d say it’s the perfect base if it’s your first time here! Skyscrapers and sleek architecture dominate the skyline, but if you wander just a little, you’ll quickly stumble across historic arcades, heritage buildings, and hidden laneways packed with street art and quirky cafés.

That contrast is what I love about the CBD—one minute, you’re looking up at modern glass towers and the next you’re sipping coffee in a century-old building. 

Shopping is one of the major draws to the CBD. Murray and Hay Street Malls offer everything from global fashion to home-grown Australian labels. Whenever I’m back in Perth, I always come to the city center to browse and people-watch, because it’s always buzzing. 

Culture lovers will want to check out the Art Gallery of Western Australia and the nearby Perth Cultural Centre. Meanwhile, foodies are spoiled for choice with everything from laneway bars to fine dining. 

Elizabeth Quay is just a short walk away and has become one of our favorite evening spots, especially for riverside drinks while the city lights sparkle. Getting around is also a breeze because free CAT buses loop through the city, and trains and ferries make it easy to explore further afield.

QT Perth – $$$

QT Perth is a bold boutique hotel right in the heart of the CBD. The decor exudes old-world charm, and the rooftop bar and pool offer stunning city views. Both are perfect for sunset drinks after a day of sightseeing, and I don’t know about you, but that’s always something that I enjoy! 

Despite its urban setting, the hotel maintains a personal feel with attentive service and unique interior touches. QT Perth is ideal for travelers looking for a sophisticated, trendy stay in the middle of the action. Expect rates from $300 to $500 AUD per night, depending on the season.

Novotel Perth Murray Street – $$

Novotel Perth Murray Street is a comfortable and reliable hotel right in the CBD. The rooms are spacious and modern, and the hotel offers a gym, an on-site restaurant, and a relaxed vibe. Thanks to its central location, it’s pretty popular with business travelers, but tourists are just as welcome! 

There’s a sheltered pool area and a spa, so it’s a nice place to relax in between your Perth adventures. Its location puts you within walking distance of shopping centers, cafés, and Perth’s top attractions like Elizabeth Quay and the Perth Mint.

Pensione Hotel Perth – $

Pensione Hotel Perth is a budget-friendly, boutique-style hotel in the CBD. The rooms are simple but stylish, with thoughtful touches that made us feel right at home! Plus, it’s within easy walking distance of key attractions, restaurants, and public transport links.

The hotel’s friendly staff and cozy atmosphere make it a great pick for solo travelers or couples, but family rooms are also available. In short, I think that this hotel is a great pick for just about anyone seeking a practical yet charming base in the city centre. Rates usually start around $175 to $275 AUD per night.

Northbridge

Northbridge sits just across the railway line from the CBD. It’s Perth’s cultural and nightlife hotspot, and it puts you right in the middle of the action. This neighborhood is packed with restaurants, bars, and clubs, and when we stayed here, we found ourselves spoiled for choice. One night it was a casual pub meal, the next it was drinks and late-night dumplings.

During the day, Northbridge has a more relaxed feel. We loved starting mornings in its indie coffee shops and wandering through boutique stores and galleries. The Perth Cultural Centre is right in the middle of it all, home to the WA Museum Boola Bardip and the Art Gallery of WA, both absolutely worth a visit. There’s a ton of street art here, too, which adds to the creative vibe, with colorful murals tucked down laneways.

Come evening, the whole neighborhood transforms into Perth’s nightlife capital! The streets buzz with energy, live music spills out of venues, and there’s always somewhere new to discover. Despite its lively side, you’ll also find heritage architecture, small green spaces, and quieter corners if you need a breather. With easy train and bus connections, getting around is simple, but honestly, you might not want to leave!

Alex Hotel – $$

Alex Hotel is a stylish, minimalist option in the heart of Northbridge. There’s a rooftop terrace, which is perfect for drinks or relaxing after exploring the area. But what really makes this hotel special is the friendly staff and their attention to detail. They really go out of their way! 

The hotel is within walking distance of top restaurants, bars, and the Perth Cultural Centre, making it a great base for those who want to be at the center of the action. I think it strikes a perfect balance between comfort, style, and location. Rooms here usually cost between $200 and $400 AUD per night.

Doubletree By Hilton Perth Northbridge – $$

Doubletree By Hilton Perth Northbridge offers a modern stay with all of the conveniences you would expect. It’s not super flashy, but there’s a fantastic rooftop pool and a lovely bar that serves killer drinks. I think the best thing, though, is the location. Staying here puts you right in the heart of Northbridge without breaking the bank! 

Another detail I should mention is that the rooms have panoramic city views, so you can wake up to views of Perth’s skyline and admire the city lights at night before you go to sleep. There’s also a gym, and the friendly staff are always on hand to help you out. Rooms here cost between $250 and $550 per night.

Attika Hotel – $

Attika Hotel is a budget-friendly aparthotel in Northbridge that doesn’t compromise on style. The units are clean, modern, and compact, so they make a practical base. Its central location means you’re steps from cafés, bars, and nightlife, while public transport options make it easy to reach the CBD and surrounding areas. 

The apartments are well-equipped, featuring full kitchens and washing machines, making them ideal for long-term travelers or those who prefer self-catering. This property is perfect for travelers who prefer location and practicality over a luxurious stay. A one-bedroom apartment starts at around $200 AUD per night.

East Perth / Burswood

East Perth and Burswood are two of Perth’s best riverside spots. They sit just east of the CBD and boast heritage buildings and lots of open green space, so it’s a great area if you’re looking for a more relaxed environment.  

Burswood is all about entertainment. It’s home to the famous Crown Perth complex, which means casinos, theaters, fine dining, and buzzing nightlife all in one place. The two areas connect along the Swan River foreshore, which we love for walking or cycling at sunset.

This part of the city is a great fit if you want to balance sightseeing with downtime. All the parks and riverfront paths make it a great choice for families or couples looking to enjoy a romantic getaway together. 

Another thing we like about this area is its history. East Perth was once an industrial hub, and you can still spot historic warehouses and railway buildings mixed in with sleek apartments. 

It’s also really convenient to get into the CBD and Northbridge from here. You can even ride the Yellow CAT bus into the city center for free! When we stayed here, we loved how easy it was to pop into the city but still feel like we had our own little riverside escape.

• Gets very busy during stadium events and concerts
• Less of a “local” vibe compared to staying right in the city center

Crown Towers Perth – $$$

Crown Towers Perth is hands-down the most luxurious hotel in the city. As a local, I can tell you that it’s actually pretty famous around here! Its tall, sleek silhouette is a well-known landmark, and from inside, you get incredible panoramic views of the Swan River and Perth’s skyline. Just waking up here is a treat! 

There’s a huge, lagoon-style pool dotted with private cabanas that boast plasma TVs and mini bars inside. The gym is enormous too—one of the biggest hotel gyms we’ve ever seen! Best of all, staying here gives you direct access to the entire Crown complex, so Michelin-starred dining, world-class bars, and the casino are all right on your doorstep.

If you love a beautifully decorated, resort-style stay, the Crown Towers will really make your trip extra special. Rooms and suites here typically cost between $400 and $2,000 AUD per night.

Crown Promenade Perth – $$

If Crown Towers is the glamorous older sibling, Crown Promenade Perth is the stylish but low-key younger sibling. The rooms are modern and comfortable, and you’re still right in the middle of the entertainment precinct. We think it’s a great choice if you want the convenience of restaurants, bars, and shows just steps away, but don’t feel like splurging on top-tier luxury.

The hotel has its own pool and gym, plus a casual restaurant that works well for families or anyone who just wants a quick, easy meal. When we stayed here, we liked that it felt relaxed yet still polished. It’s perfect for exploring both Burswood and East Perth. Rooms and suites typically range between $270 and $700 AUD per night.

Residence on Langley Park – $

Residence on Langley Park is our top pick for budget-friendly stays in the East Perth / Burswood area. These self-contained suites, studios, and apartments sit right across from Langley Park, so you’ve got river views, green space, and plenty of room to stretch out.

The kitchens are a huge plus if you’re planning a longer trip or just like the option of cooking a few meals. What’s impressive about this place is that the rooms and apartments are still very aesthetically pleasing, and you get more space for your money compared to a traditional hotel room.

The property is walking distance to cafes, buses, and even Crown Perth, so you won’t feel far from the action. It’s stylish, practical, and a great value if you’d rather spend your money on experiences around Perth. Fremantle (Freo)

Fremantle, or “Freo”, as locals call it, has a character all its own. This historic port city sits about 30 minutes from central Perth, but it feels like a world away! For that reason, it’s a really desirable place to live. After all, who doesn’t love heritage buildings, lively markets, and a laid-back seaside vibe?

We really appreciate the mix of history and creativity here. You can wander through old shipping warehouses that now house microbreweries, hop between trendy cafés, and then go explore landmarks like Fremantle Prison. Freo is perfect if you want more than just a city stay. It offers a slice of that laidback Aussie lifestyle! Foodies in particular will be in heaven thanks to the Fremantle Markets, boutique restaurants, and some of Perth’s best craft brews. Meanwhile, South Beach and Bathers Beach are just a short walk from town. It really does have something for everyone! 

I love the slower pace compared to the CBD, and Freo is probably where I’ll end up living if I ever move back to Perth permanently! It’s a bit further from Perth’s main attractions, but if you want history, culture, and a strong local vibe, Fremantle is the place to be.

Be. Fremantle – $$$

Be. Fremantle offers spacious, self-contained apartments right on the waterfront. The views are absolutely unbeatable! We could spend hours just watching the boats drift in and out of Fishing Boat Harbour. Each apartment has a kitchen and living space, which makes it feel more like a home than a hotel, especially for longer stays.

We think this is an excellent choice for families or couples who want space, comfort, and direct access to Fremantle’s best attractions. You’re a short walk from Bathers Beach, the markets, and all the restaurants and breweries around the harbour.

It feels relaxed yet upscale, with that perfect mix of convenience and luxury. Rates usually range between $350 and $600 AUD per night.

Garde and Warders Hotel – $$

Garde and Warders Hotel is a boutique hotel with such a cool story! It’s set in beautifully restored heritage buildings that were once warders’ cottages from the 1850s. Inside, though, it’s all modern comfort with stylish rooms, a great onsite restaurant, and a warm, intimate atmosphere.

We loved that it feels distinctly “Freo,” with the kind of character that you just don’t get in a big chain hotel. The location is fantastic too. It’s right near Fremantle Markets, the prison, and plenty of bars and restaurants.

It’s perfect for couples or anyone who wants a more unique stay with personality and history baked in. Rooms, apartments, and cottages range between $220 and $900 AUD per night, depending on dates.

Quest Fremantle – $$

Quest Fremantle is a stylish four-star aparthotel. It’s perfect for those who want to self-cater, since the studios and apartments come with kitchenettes or full kitchens, plus laundry facilities, which are very handy if you’re on the road for a long time!

The decor is modern and inviting, and the location couldn’t be better. Quest is right in the heart of Fremantle, so you can walk to cafés, shops, and Bathers Beach in minutes. It’s not as boutique or charming as some of the heritage hotels in town, but if you want comfort, space, and a great base for exploring, it really delivers.

West Perth / Subiaco

West Perth and Subiaco (or “Subi” as locals call it) sit just west of the CBD. These neighborhoods are known for being leafy, stylish, and full of character. 

West Perth is a business and residential district, and Kings Park sits right on its doorstep. It’s actually one of the largest inner-city parks in the world, and a place we never get tired of walking through!

Neighboring Subiaco is trendier and has a real “village” feel. Over the past decade or so, it has become one of Perth’s coolest areas. We enjoy spending time here because there are so many boutique shops, great cafés, and lively pubs, plus a strong arts and theatre scene. Subiaco also has some of Perth’s best boutique shopping, plus the famous Subi Farmers Market on Saturdays, which is a definite must-visit! 

When we stayed in this area, we loved how easy it was to head into the CBD for sightseeing but come back to a quieter, more laid-back neighborhood at the end of the day. If you’re after a base that feels central but local and livable, we’re confident you’ll love this part of Perth.

• Not as many big tourist attractions are within walking distance
• Can be pricier for dining and shopping compared to other areas

Vibe Hotel Subiaco Perth – $$

Vibe Hotel Subiaco Perth is sleek, modern, and right in the heart of Subi. We loved the rooftop pool and bar, which gives you fantastic views over the city. It was perfect for sunset swims and drinks! 

The rooms are contemporary and comfortable, with everything you’d expect for a city stay, and the location puts you within walking distance of Subiaco’s shops, cafés, and restaurants. We think that this hotel is ideal for couples or solo travelers who want a stylish base in one of Perth’s trendiest neighborhoods.

It feels more boutique than corporate, with a lively atmosphere that fits the Subi vibe. Rooms usually cost between $180 and $500 AUD per night.

Holiday Inn West Perth by IHG – $$

We think that the Holiday Inn West Perth strikes a nice balance between comfort and convenience. It’s set in a beautiful heritage-listed building on Hay Street, but updated with modern, spacious rooms that work well for both business and leisure stays. We really like the on-site restaurant, Julio’s, which serves Italian food in a charming, historic setting.

The location is great, too. It’s just a short stroll from Kings Park, and only a quick bus or drive into the CBD. It’s perfect if you want easy city access but prefer staying somewhere a little quieter. Rooms typically range between $200 and $400 AUD per night.

Tribe Perth Kings Park – $

Tribe Perth Kings Park is a boutique but budget-friendly hotel with a cool, modern design. The rooms are compact but smartly laid out, with lots of plush and creative touches. We love the communal lounge area and café downstairs because it has a trendy, social feel that makes it stand out from more traditional hotels.

The big highlight here is the location! You’re right next to Kings Park, which means morning walks or evening picnics with gorgeous city views are basically on your doorstep. It’s a fantastic option for anyone who wants to stay close to nature while still being near the city.

Rates usually run between $150 and $350 AUD per night, with a generous cancellation policy and the option to include breakfast.

South Perth

South Perth is one of the city’s most scenic spots! It sits directly across the river from the CBD, and what makes it special is the uninterrupted skyline views. Honestly, it’s the best vantage point in Perth! This is especially true at sunset when the city lights start to sparkle across the water. 

The South Perth Foreshore is the star attraction here, with long walking and cycling paths and picnic spots. The area is also home to Perth Zoo, as well as plenty of green space and playgrounds for kids to enjoy, so we think it’s especially suitable for families.

In short, this area is ideal if you want peace and quiet without feeling isolated from the city. There’s a ferry that can get you across to Elizabeth Quay in just a few minutes, so it’s easy to hop over to the CBD for sightseeing. Buses can also get you to the city center in about half an hour.

Granted, it’s not as convenient as staying right in the CBD or Northbridge, but if you’re looking to escape the buzzy nightlife and crowds in the center, the trade-off may well be worth it.

Pagoda Resort & Spa – $$

Pagoda Resort & Spa is a South Perth classic! It’s set in a heritage-style building with a bit of old-world charm and all of the amenities you’ll need. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, but the standout is the lagoon-style pool area, which feels like a little oasis away from the city. Kids are guaranteed to love it! 

We also love that this hotel has a full fitness center and sauna, which is not something you always find at this price point. The location puts you close to the foreshore, and it’s an easy drive or quick ferry into the CBD. It’s a great choice for families or couples who want resort-style facilities without breaking the bank. Rooms generally cost between $200 and $350 AUD per night.

Quest South Perth Foreshore – $$

Quest South Perth Foreshore is a fantastic option if you want self-contained convenience in a prime location. The modern studios and apartments come with kitchenettes or full kitchens, which we think is a huge plus for those who like to self-cater rather than dine out all the time. 

The units boast clean, minimalist decor and lots of natural light. Plus, you’re literally across the street from the foreshore, so the views and walking paths are right at your doorstep. It’s also incredibly easy to catch the ferry to Elizabeth Quay, making it a smart choice if you want peaceful South Perth living with quick CBD access.

Rates start at $275 AUD for a studio apartment and range up to $1,000 AUD per night for a three-bedroom apartment that sleeps up to six people.

Metro Hotel Perth – $

Metro Hotel Perth may be a budget-friendly hotel, but it’s still sleek and modern! Many rooms offer fantastic views of the river and city skyline, which is not something you usually get at this price range! We think that’s what makes it stand out compared to other budget hotels in the city.

There’s a small gym, a bar and restaurant, and free parking on site, so you’ve got everything you need for a comfortable and convenient stay. You’re a 10-minute drive from Perth Zoo and 5 minutes from Kings Park, so it’s in a great location for families! Rates usually run between $150 and $215 AUD per night.

Scarborough

Scarborough is Perth’s ultimate beachside playground, so if you’re dreaming of a coastal getaway, this is the perfect place to stay. It’s all about sun, surfing, and a laid-back lifestyle here. Plus, it’s just a 20-minute drive or Uber ride to the CBD, so you’re not a million miles away from sightseeing and nightlife!

Hiring a car will definitely make it easier to explore the city if you’re staying here, but Scarborough itself is very walkable. The best thing about Scarborough is its beautiful beach. It’s wide and white with calm, bright blue water that’s perfect for swimming or surfing. This is also one of my favorite sunset spots in Perth. 

Scarborough has had a big revamp in recent years, with new bars, cafés, and public spaces that give it a fresh, vibrant feel. It’s perfect if you want a classic Aussie beach holiday without straying too far from the city. 

Families will love the beachside playgrounds and open spaces, while couples and groups of friends can dive into the buzzing food and nightlife scene that kicks off once the sun goes down. There’s also a great weekend market vibe, and during summer, the Scarborough Sunset Markets are a must. If you’re all about the coast, Scarborough delivers in spades!

Rendezvous Hotel Perth Scarborough – $$

Rendezvous Hotel is Scarborough’s most iconic beachfront hotel! You really can’t miss its tall white tower overlooking the ocean. The views from the rooms are incredible, especially if you grab a higher floor with a balcony. We love the resort-style pool area, complete with sun loungers and a bar, because it gives off true holiday vibes! 

The location couldn’t be better: step outside and you’re right on the beach, with Scarborough’s restaurants and nightlife just a short walk away. If you want that true beachfront experience, the Rendezvous delivers. Rooms usually cost between $200 and $500 AUD per night, depending on the room category you choose.

Ramada by Wyndham VetroBlu – $$

Ramada by Wyndham VetroBlu is a sleek and modern aparthotel just a short stroll from Scarborough Beach. The apartments come with full kitchens and laundry facilities, which we think is perfect for families, groups, or longer stays. The modern design gives it a clean, fresh feel, and the extra space compared to a standard hotel room is a big win.

You’ll be close to all the action at Scarborough, but with the flexibility to cook your own meals or just spread out a bit more. It’s not directly on the sand like Rendezvous, but we think that it offers excellent value for money. Rates usually run between $200 and $500 AUD per night.

Indian Ocean Hotel – $

The Indian Ocean Hotel—affectionately nicknamed “the Indi”—is a bit of a Scarborough institution. It’s a budget-friendly option with retro charm, a lively bar, and a social atmosphere that makes it popular with younger travelers and anyone looking for a fun stay by the beach. We liked the pool area and the fact that it often hosts live music and events, adding to that laid-back coastal vibe.

Kings Park / Mounts Bay

The Kings Park and Mounts Bay area is where nature meets the city. Kings Park is one of the largest inner-city parks in the world, and it has always been one of my favorite spots in Perth. The views of the skyline and Swan River from here are unbeatable, especially at sunset, and the Botanic Garden is stunning year-round.

The park is also packed with walking trails, picnic areas, and playgrounds, so it’s just as good for families as it is for couples on a romantic stroll.

Meanwhile, the Mounts Bay area sits just below Kings Park, closer to the river. It offers a quieter, greener base just a 15-minute bus ride from the CBD, so it’s perfect if you want easy access to the city while still enjoying a little more tranquility. When we stayed here, we loved waking up surrounded by trees, taking a morning walk through Kings Park, and then being able to head straight into the city!

This area is best for travelers who value peace and nature but still want city convenience. The only downside is that nightlife and dining are limited right on your doorstep, so you’ll probably want to head into the CBD for more options.

Aurea Hotel Perth Kings Park – $$

Aurea Hotel Perth Kings Park is a cozy and modern hotel that sits right across from Kings Park itself. It’s wonderful to be able to just cross the street and then dive straight into walking trails or head up to the Botanic Garden! The rooms are clean, comfortable, and have everything you need for a short or mid-length stay.

We like the funky pool area, and although it’s not a super flashy property, the location does make it feel special. If you’re into nature and want to start your mornings with a walk and incredible views, you’ll love this hotel. Rooms usually cost between $250 and $400 AUD per night.

Nesuto Mounts Bay – $$

Nesuto Mounts Bay offers spacious two-bedroom apartments in a modern building that’s tucked into a leafy pocket right below Kings Park. The apartments come with kitchens and laundry facilities, which is ideal for longer stays or trips where you don’t want to eat out every night.

The space and practicality make it an excellent option for families and groups. And the location is a big plus, too. The property is close to both Kings Park and the CBD, so you get the best of both worlds: green surroundings and easy city access!

It feels more like a residential stay than a hotel, which we think adds to the charm. However, you still get a delicious breakfast included in the price. Two-bedroom apartments typically cost between $250 and $750 AUD per night.

Quest Mounts Bay Road – $

Quest Mounts Bay Road is a budget-friendly aparthotel that doesn’t skimp on comfort. The studios and apartments are modern and practical, with kitchenettes or full kitchens that make self-catering simple. We like the bright, clean design and the fact that it’s set up for both short and extended stays.

The location is great if you want to be close to Kings Park but also within easy reach of the CBD—in fact, it’s only about a 7-minute bus ride into the city from here! It’s not flashy, but it’s smart, comfortable, and offers excellent value for money. 

Studio apartments cost around $235 AUD per night, while a two-bedroom apartment will set you back around $500 AUD.
