We joined the 11:30 am to 3 pm tour, which fit perfectly into our day as a leisurely and delicious lunch.
The tour kicked off at a much-loved local restaurant, where we sampled a delicious spread of charcuterie and cheeses, served with a traditional Pot Lyonnais. From there, we wandered through the cobbled streets of Rue Saint-Jean, admiring medieval architecture while hearing fascinating stories about Lyon’s traboules—secret passageways that reveal the city’s layered history.
No food tour is complete without something sweet, and this one didn’t disappoint. We sampled pink praline brioches and decadent local specialties at a charming chocolatier before settling in at an authentic bouchon for a hearty, flavor-packed meal.

Late Afternoon – See the city from a pedicab
After a big afternoon of eating, the last thing we wanted was more walking or being crammed into a stuffy coach. That’s why this private bike taxi tour was the perfect way to wind down the afternoon without missing out on Lyon’s incredible history.
We chose the 4 pm option, which gave us just enough time to digest and make our way over from the food tour. The meeting point is only about a 17-minute walk (or 10 minutes by public transit), but that later slot gave us buffer time in case the earlier tour ran long.
Riding in the eco-friendly pedicab was such a refreshing change. The vehicle was spotless, comfortable, and came with a canopy that kept us shielded from wind and sun.
Best of all, we had Michael as our guide! He was so knowledgeable and passionate about Lyon and pointed out architectural details and hidden spots we’d completely missed while walking the day before.
We cruised through Vieux Lyon, down the elegant Presqu’île, and along the banks of the Rhône, taking in iconic landmarks like Saint-Jean Cathedral, the Lyon Fresco, and Hôtel Dieu, all with an open-air view that made photos effortless.

Evening – Explore Vieux Lyon
After our scenic ride through the city, we returned to Vieux Lyon, and we’re so glad we did—the Old Town feels completely different at night! The cobblestone streets were quieter, the Renaissance buildings softly lit, and the whole area had a slower, more romantic energy. Without the daytime crowds, we could really take in the architecture, peek into courtyards, and wander the traboules at our own pace.
Before dinner, we paused at Le Bar Bu, a cozy little spot tucked into the heart of the neighborhood. It was the perfect place to sit for a moment, enjoy the setting, and soak in the glow of Old Lyon at night. No big evening plans needed—just being here was the ideal way to wrap up our first full day.
Dinner – Le Cabaretier
Tucked away on a quiet side street in Vieux Lyon, Le Cabaretier is a cozy, family-run bouchon that feels refreshingly local. With its rustic wooden beams and relaxed atmosphere, it’s the kind of place that immediately puts you at ease. The menu focuses on traditional Lyonnaise dishes, like quenelle de brochet, paleron de boeuf, and a classic salade lyonnaise, all served in generous portions and full of rich, comforting flavor.
At just €30–€40 for the fixed-price menu, dinner here is a fantastic value, especially when paired with warm service and thoughtful presentation. Day 2
Morning – Go wine tasting in the Rhône Valley
If you’re craving a day trip that combines gorgeous scenery, charming villages, and unforgettable wine, this Northern Rhône tour is the way to go. We chose the 9 am to 1 pm option, which made for a full and flavorful morning without feeling rushed.
Just a heads-up: this tour doesn’t run on Sundays or Mondays, so if your second day falls on either, you’ll want to swap your itinerary around to make it work.
Our day started in Ampuis, the birthplace of Côte-Rôtie wines. We wandered through the vineyard-covered hills, where our guide, Mathilde, explained how the steep terrain and southern exposure make this the perfect growing region for Syrah and Viognier grapes. The views over the Rhône Valley looked like they were straight out of a painting!
Next, we stepped into a family-run estate with an old-world wine cellar that smelled like oak and earth. We tasted an incredibly aromatic Viognier that was bursting with character, and the whole experience felt so personal, like we were guests, not just visitors.
The final stop was a boutique winery in Condrieu, where we enjoyed another round of tastings and learned to pick out each wine’s subtle characteristics. On the drive back to Lyon, we even got a glimpse of Vienne’s Roman ruins!

After a morning exploring the vineyards of the Northern Rhône, we were ready for a hearty, home-style lunch, and Le Bouchon des Cordeliers hit the spot in every way. This well-loved bouchon, located right in the heart of Lyon, serves up classic regional dishes in a setting that feels both cozy and lively.
We grabbed a table inside the wood-accented dining room, where the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The menu features all the Lyonnaise staples, from salade lyonnaise to andouillette, along with daily specials that highlight seasonal ingredients. The portions were generous, the flavors rich, and the service genuinely friendly without feeling rushed—exactly what you want after a busy morning!
Afternoon – Explore on your own
Spend the afternoon seeing a different side of Lyon, at your own pace. If you’re up for more sightseeing, the Presqu’île area is packed with history and beautiful architecture. Prefer something slower and outdoorsy? Head across the Rhône to relax in the city’s beloved urban park.
- Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon – Often called the “little Louvre,” the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon is the city’s top museum and a must for art lovers. Tips for Renting a Car in France
- Know the local rules: In France, they drive on the right-hand side, and some intersections follow priorité à droite—meaning cars from the right have the right of way, even if you’re on the main road. It’s also mandatory to carry a reflective vest and warning triangle in your car.
