Lecce, located near the southern tip of Puglia’s Salento Peninsula, is widely regarded as the “Florence of the South,” for its beautifully preserved historic center and some of the finest Baroque architecture in Italy.

What we love most about the city is that it’s incredibly walkable. And while a lot of travelers rent a car to explore the wider Puglia region, you definitely won’t need one to get around Lecce. In fact, driving can be more of a hassle than a help, especially around the historic center and Piazza Mazzini, where parking is limited, and streets can be tricky to navigate. We typically recommend exploring the city on foot instead, although bikes and scooters are also popular. 

For first-time visitors, the historic center is usually the best place to stay. This is where you’ll find many of the city’s top attractions, all within easy walking distance. However, if you’re open to a slightly more modern atmosphere, the area around Piazza Mazzini is another excellent place to stay.  

You’ll also find some fantastic accommodation options just outside the city. The countryside masserias are among the most unique places to stay in Puglia, offering a peaceful escape surrounded by olive groves and farmland. While they’re located outside Lecce itself, most are only a short drive from the city center, making them a great option if you’re looking for a more relaxing stay.

Lecce’s historic center is where you’ll find many of the city’s most famous landmarks, including the Basilica di Santa Croce, Piazza Duomo, and the Roman Amphitheater, all within easy walking distance of one another.

If you choose to stay here, you’ll be completely immersed in the side of Lecce that has earned it the nickname “Florence of the South.” You can spend your mornings wandering through historic streets, stop for a pasticciotto and espresso at a local cafe, and end the day with a sunset aperitivo at a piazza. There are also countless restaurants, wine bars, and gelaterias tucked away throughout the neighborhood, so you’ll never be short of places to explore.

Of course, staying in the historic center does come with a few trade-offs. The narrow streets weren’t designed for modern traffic, so driving and parking can be super frustrating. The area also gets quite busy during peak season, with bars and restaurants staying lively well into the evening. 

That said, if it’s your first time in Lecce and you’d like to be within walking distance of the city’s top attractions, restaurants, and cultural sights, it’s hard to find a better place to stay! 

Tivoli Palazzo 1880 Lecce Hotel – $$$

If you’re really looking to splurge on your trip to Lecce, Tivoli Palazzo 1880 Lecce Hotel is definitely worth checking out! This is a luxurious 5-star boutique hotel housed in a restored 16th-century palazzo, and it’s just steps away from Piazza Duomo and the Basilica di Santa Croce. 

What we love most about this hotel, though, is its panoramic rooftop terrace and restaurant, which offers some of the most breathtaking views of the city! 

In terms of pricing, you can expect rates to start around €300 per night and climb to €490+ per night, depending on the room and season.

If Tivoli Palazzo 1880 is all booked up on your preferred dates, Lu Leccio is another fabulous option. This hotel also has a stunning rooftop terrace, and it’s just a 7-minute walk to Piazza del Duomo. 

Palazzo Sant’Anna Lecce is a standout luxury option in Lecce’s historic center. Housed in a beautifully restored historic building, it combines elegant, atmospheric interiors with standout amenities like a spa and rooftop terrace, all just steps from the city’s main sights.

Arryvo Hotel – $$

Next up is the Arryvo Hotel. This 3-star hotel is stylish, modern, and has a ton of personality, and it’s actually our top pick in the area! 

Like other hotels in the historic center, there’s a gorgeous sun terrace, but there’s also a games room and a bar/lounge with evening entertainment (so fun!). Location-wise, you’re only about a 5-minute walk from Porta Napoli and Piazza Sant’Oronzo, so you’ll be perfectly placed to explore everything the historic center has to offer. 

As far as cost goes, rates typically start from around €100 to €250+ per night, which is fantastic value for the location.

Another mid-range hotel we adore is Roiss Haus Suites. This is more of a traditional hotel housed in a 17th-century palazzo, and it’s just a 2-minute walk to Piazza Duomo. 

Oronti Accommodations is also a fabulous hotel in the area. This modern hotel is located right on the Piazza Sant’Oronzo, and they even offer a paid shuttle service to the airport. 

Grand Hotel Di Lecce – $

For our budget-friendly pick, we always like to recommend the Grand Hotel Di Lecce. This hotel is a bit further out compared to other options near the historic center, but it more than makes up for it with its elegant Art Nouveau architecture, grand interiors, and outdoor swimming pool (which isn’t always easy to find with hotels in this price range). 

Rates typically start from around €120 to €250+ per night, depending on the season, which is excellent value for central Lecce. 

Another budget-friendly option we love is Dimora I Santi Patroni. This hotel is less than a 5-minute walk from the Piazza Duomo and offers larger apartment-style rooms and suites. 

Piazza Mazzini

BEST FOR SHOPPING & MODERN STAYS

Pros

• Excellent shopping with lots of different Italian boutiques and modern stores
• Easier parking and driving access compared to the historic center
• A more contemporary, local vibe with great cafes and restaurants

Cons

• Lacks the immediate historic charm and Baroque architecture of the old town
• You will need to walk 10-15 minutes to reach the main historical sights

Located just outside Lecce’s historic center, Piazza Mazzini offers a more modern side of the city, with wide boulevards, popular shopping streets, contemporary hotels, and plenty of cafes and restaurants. This is one of Lecce’s main commercial districts, and you’ll find everything from local boutiques to well-known Italian brands along nearby streets like Via Trinchese.

If you choose to stay here, you’ll get the best of both worlds. During the day, you can enjoy the area’s shops and cafes, while the city’s famous Baroque landmarks remain just a short walk away. In fact, most of the historic center can be reached in less than 15 minutes on foot from Piazza Mazzini, making it incredibly easy to dip in and out whenever you feel like sightseeing.

In our experience, Piazza Mazzini works particularly well for travelers arriving by car. The streets are easier to navigate, parking is generally less stressful, and you’ll have quick access to the wider Salento region for day trips along the coast.

That said, if you’re dreaming of stepping outside your hotel directly into Lecce’s maze of historic streets and piazzas, the historic center will be a better fit. However, if you’d prefer more modern accommodation and a slightly more local feel while still staying close to the action, Piazza Mazzini is an excellent choice.

Palazzo Giusti Lecce – $$$

For our first pick near Piazza Mazzini, we cannot recommend Palazzo Giusti Lecce enough! 

This stylish boutique hotel offers just 11 suites, giving it a much more intimate feel compared to the larger hotels in Lecce. The real highlight, though, is the rooftop bar and heated hydro-massage pool in the solarium, which makes it feel like a true city retreat. 

Rates typically start from around €200 to €900+ per night, depending on the room type and season, which is an incredible value for such an elegant stay just a 2-minute walk from Piazza Mazzini. 

Mercure Hotel President Lecce – $$

For our mid-range pick in the area, we always like to recommend Mercure Hotel President Lecce.

This 4-star hotel is just a 5-minute walk from Piazza Mazzini, and it offers everything you’d ever want from a modern city center stay, including an on-site bar and restaurant, room service, and an airport shuttle service for an additional fee. There’s even private parking on-site if you need it! 

Price-wise, you can expect rates to begin at around €90 per night (such a steal!). However, they can exceed €300+ on peak dates.

Another mid-range option worth considering is Torre del Parco. This hotel is housed in a 15th-century medieval fortress, and it’s only about a 10-minute walk to Piazza Mazzini.

Glass House – Smart Rooms & Parking – $

For a budget-friendly stay near Piazza Mazzini, you can’t go wrong with Glass House – Smart Rooms & Parking. The vibe here is modern and minimalist, with private check-in and check-out available through your smartphone. 

What we really love about this hotel is that many of the rooms come with a spa bath, and there’s also a hot tub, which feels like a real luxury at this price point. Location-wise, you’re just a 10-minute walk from both Piazza Mazzini and the Basilica di Santa Croce, so you’ll have easy access to both the shopping district and Lecce’s beautiful historic center.

Rooms typically go for around €60 to €220+ per night, depending on the room and season. 

Another budget-friendly hotel we love near Piazza Mazzini is Living u HomeSuites. This hotel offers apartment-style stays with fully equipped kitchenettes, which is ideal for keeping snacks, drinks, and breakfast essentials on hand during your trip.

San Pio

BEST FOR BUDGET TRAVELERS

Pros

• More affordable accommodation options compared to the city center
• A quiet, authentic residential atmosphere away from the tourist crowds
• Easier street parking for those traveling with a rental car

Cons

• A longer walk (15-20+ minutes) to reach the main historical attractions
• Fewer dining and nightlife options in the immediate vicinity

Located west of Lecce’s historic center, San Pio is a peaceful residential neighborhood that offers some of the best value accommodation in the city. 

While it doesn’t have the grand Baroque landmarks or bustling piazzas of the old town, it makes up for it with a more authentic local atmosphere, easier parking, and generally lower hotel prices. It’s also still close enough to walk to many of Lecce’s main attractions, including Piazza Sant’Oronzo and the Basilica di Santa Croce.

In our experience, San Pio works especially well for travelers who plan to spend most of their days exploring Lecce and the wider Salento region. Accommodation here often offers more space for your money, and you’ll get a glimpse of everyday life in the city beyond the tourist hotspots. There are also plenty of local cafes, bakeries, and neighborhood trattorias dotted throughout the area, so you definitely won’t go hungry! 

Of course, staying in San Pio means you won’t have the historic center’s famous Baroque architecture around every corner, and evenings tend to be much quieter. You’ll also need to factor in a 15 to 20-minute walk whenever you want to visit the city’s main sights and attractions.

However, if you’re looking to keep accommodation costs down, have a rental car, or simply prefer a quieter and more local experience, San Pio is an excellent option that’s often overlooked by a lot of travelers. 

Palazzo Dei Dondoli – $$$

If you love the idea of staying in a historic residence, you absolutely have to check out Palazzo Dei Dondoli. 

This is a beautifully restored early 20th-century mansion that provides such a peaceful escape from the city with its modern rooms, lush courtyard garden, and sun terrace. It’s also just a 5-minute walk from the city center, so sightseeing is a breeze! 

Room prices typically start around €150 per night and climb to €200+ per night, depending on the season, which is excellent value considering how gorgeous this property is (and parking is included, too!). 

Ada Suites & Spa – $$

Next up is Ada Suites & Spa, which is actually our top pick for San Pio! We always recommend this hotel because it offers excellent value for money, with modern rooms and a location that’s still only around a 10-minute walk from the historic center. 

What we really love, though, is the wellness center, complete with a sauna, Jacuzzi, and massage room, plus a small rooftop terrace that’s perfect for unwinding after a day of sightseeing. Rates for this hotel typically start from around €110 to €160+ per night, which is such a steal for the area!

Last Minute Rooms Lecce – $

For our budget-friendly pick in San Pio, we always recommend Last Minute Rooms Lecce. This charming bed and breakfast is just a 3-minute walk to Porta Rudiae and around 10 minutes to Duomo Square. But what we really love about this property is the relaxed, home-away-from-home vibes. 

There’s a lovely sun terrace, outdoor seating area, and a shared lounge where you can get to know fellow travelers. You’ll also have access to a shared kitchen, which is so handy for preparing simple meals and snacks before you head out to explore.  

Price-wise, you can expect rates to typically start from around €60 to €120+ per night, depending on the room and season.

Countryside Masserias

BEST FOR A LUXURY & UNIQUE STAY

Pros

• Stunning, historic properties offering a truly unique and luxurious experience
• Peaceful rural settings surrounded by olive groves and vineyards

• You absolutely must have a rental car to stay here
• You are not in Lecce city, so you cannot easily walk to urban attractions or nightlife

The countryside surrounding Lecce is home to some of the most beautiful masserias in all of Puglia. These historic fortified farmhouses have been beautifully restored into boutique hotels and luxury retreats, with many offering large swimming pools, spas, lush gardens, and exceptional farm-to-table restaurants. 

While these properties aren’t located in Lecce itself, most are only a short drive from the city center, so you’ll still be well-positioned for plenty of sightseeing and shopping in the city! 

In our opinion, staying in a masseria is one of the best ways to experience southern Italy. There’s just something special about waking up in the countryside, enjoying a leisurely homemade breakfast and a coffee, and spending the afternoon by the pool surrounded by centuries-old olive groves before heading into town for an aperitivo. Many properties also offer on-site cooking classes and wine tastings, which are just so fun! 

Before you book, just know that you’ll definitely need a rental car to get around, and spontaneous walks to restaurants, attractions, or nightlife simply aren’t an option. However, if you’re celebrating something special, planning a romantic getaway, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, a countryside masseria is without a doubt worth considering! 

Masseria Stali – $$$

If you’re really looking to treat yourself, Masseria Stali is an excellent choice! This masseria is nestled in the countryside just 12 km (7.5 miles) southeast of Lecce, and it offers a truly exceptional experience. 

The property even produces its own olive oil and wine, and there’s an excellent restaurant that serves delicious organic dishes made with local produce. Add in two swimming pools and plenty of peaceful outdoor space, and you have all the ingredients for a relaxing countryside escape!

In terms of pricing, you can expect rates to typically start from around €110 and climb to €260+ per night during peak season. 

If Masseria Stali is all booked up on your preferred dates, Masseria Lilei is also worth checking out! This historic masseria is a bit closer to Lecce, and it has a truly stunning outdoor infinity pool along with indoor spa facilities. 

Masseria Trapanà is another luxury option we love. This beautifully restored 16th-century masseria features a one-of-a-kind subterranean spa, and best of all, it’s just a 20-minute drive from Lecce.

Masseria & Spa LuciaGiovanni – $$

For our mid-range pick, we always recommend Masseria & Spa LuciaGiovanni. This unique 4-star resort combines traditional Salento architecture with Moroccan-inspired design, so it has a bit of a different vibe compared to anything else you’ll typically find near Lecce. 

You’ll have access to beautiful spa facilities, a swimming pool, and special discounts at a few private beaches nearby, which is such a nice perk! 

Despite its peaceful setting, you’re only about a 5-minute drive from Lecce’s historic center, so it’s easy to dip in and out of the city as you wish. Price-wise, you can expect rates to usually begin at around €170 per night, but they can go up to €270+ for peak dates.

If you’d like some alternatives, we also recommend Masseria Rifisa AgriResort. This is another gorgeous property near Lecce set on a former 18th-century tobacco farm, and it offers a spa, heated outdoor pool, and yoga classes. 

Masseria Paralupi is also a brilliant choice for a peaceful countryside stay. We absolutely love this property not only because it’s gorgeous, but because it’s very close to Lecce (only about 3 km or 1.8 mi from Piazza Mazzini), so you get all the peace and quiet of a countryside retreat without feeling disconnected from the city.

Masseria San Polo – $

Last but not least, our budget-friendly pick in the countryside is Masseria San Polo. 

Although there isn’t a spa like some of the luxury and mid-range picks, there’s still a beautiful outdoor pool and gardens you can enjoy during your stay, plus a rooftop sun terrace. It’s also worth mentioning that the breakfast here is out of this world, with a range of continental, American, and Italian options available each morning.

The location is great too! You’re only about a 20-minute drive to Lecce’s historic center, and in terms of pricing, you can expect rates to range from €160 to €185+ per night. 

Top Activities to Do in Lecce

Now that you know where to stay, let’s take a look at what you can actually do when you arrive! While Lecce is best known for its stunning historic center, there’s so much more to the city and the surrounding Salento region than sightseeing alone.

Here are just a few of our absolute favorite things to do in and around Lecce:  

• Learn how to cook authentic Italian food – There really is no better way to experience Puglia than through its food, and this hands-on cooking class with a local family is one of the most memorable things you can do in the region. You’ll learn how to make fresh orecchiette and maccheroncini using family recipes that have been passed down through generations (so cool!)

• Discover Lecce with a local guide – You can’t beat a good walking tour, and this small-group walking tour is as good as they get!
