Headed to Napa and need a game plan? You’re in the right place!

Napa is such a special place in Northern California and home to some of the world’s most scenic drives, world-class restaurants, and ultra-stylish hotels.

If you’ve never been to Napa before, or maybe it’s been a while, it can be a surprisingly tricky destination to plan for since there’s literally so much to do. To help, we’ve mapped out this perfect 3-day itinerary, making sure to include all the classic experiences (plus a few unexpected finds), a lineup of incredible dining spots (obviously!), and plenty of time to slow down and actually enjoy your time in the Napa Valley!

Ready to plan your ideal Napa trip? Let’s go!

Don’t miss out!

Our Top Choice

The tour we loved the most and suggest booking ASAP is this one!

Our FAVORITE thing we did in Napa was this small-group wine tour. You’ll visit three wineries in one easy day with a picnic lunch and flexible tastings so you can choose what you like. No planning required!

Itinerary Overview

Take a hot air balloon ride!

Get ready for tons of great wine

This itinerary was created with Napa town as a home base. However, there are plenty of great areas nearby where you could stay, too. That said, when we visited the Napa Valley, we really loved staying in downtown Napa. It puts you right in the middle of everything, so you can easily walk to dinner, pop into boutique shops, or wander along the river without needing to plan around driving. It just makes the whole trip feel a bit more relaxed and spontaneous, since there is so much on your doorstep!

If you do stay central, you probably won’t need to rent a car, especially if you’re staying in Napa town. Most tours around Napa have transportation provided (which makes things even easier if you’re planning to enjoy a few wine tastings). And if a tour doesn’t include transportation, you can easily get an Uber to reach spots slightly further out. Everything else in town is completely walkable, so you won’t have to worry about navigating unfamiliar roads or finding parking.

But before we get to the details, here’s a quick look at the main things you’ll be doing on your 3-day trip to Napa:

Day 1: Grab breakfast at a local favorite, spend the day on a wine tasting tour, and wind down with a cozy dinner of Neapolitan classics at Scala Osteria & Bar.

Day 2: Kick things off with a hot air balloon ride at sunrise, explore Sonoma on a food and wine tour, then relax in the afternoon before tapas (and ice cream!) near the river.

Day 3: Choose between an e-bike or trolley wine tour, explore Oxbow Public Market, and round off your trip with an incredible Japanese dinner and rooftop drinks.

Day 1

Breakfast – Winston’s Napa

Homemade Bagel and Salmon Lox with Cream Cheese in Napa Valley California
A great breakfast spot

What better way to begin your first full day in Napa than with a fantastic breakfast at Winston’s, a small neighborhood cafe and bakery located right in the middle of downtown Napa. We recommend arriving around 8:30 am (it opens at 7 am on weekdays and 8 am on weekends), which will be perfect for your schedule today.

Because everything at Winston’s is made from scratch, you can’t really go wrong with what you order. We went for a lox bagel, and it set us up perfectly for a full day of wine tasting! The best part about this spot is that it’s only a six-minute walk to the meeting point for your wine tour today (which meets at 10 am), so you shouldn’t have to rush, as long as you arrive around 8:30 am.

Full day – Go wine tasting with a small group and local guide

If you are a wine lover, you HAVE to take this tour!

At 10 am, it’s time for your classic Napa Valley wine tasting experience, and this small group tour is such a great introduction to the region. It runs until around 5 pm, giving you a full day to sip, learn, and take in those iconic vineyard views.

You’ll visit three wineries, and we loved how each one had its own vibe, so the day never felt repetitive. It gave us a really well-rounded feel for Napa wines, which is exactly what you want on your first visit.

Tastings are at your own expense, which might sound unusual at first, but we actually preferred it. It meant we could choose exactly what we wanted to try at each stop and tailor the experience to our own tastes, rather than being locked into a preset menu.

There’s no need to research or stress about which wineries to visit since everything is organized for you, so you can just show up and enjoy. Plus, the small group size made it feel much more personal than a big bus tour, and we even got to know some of the other travelers along the way.

Midday, you’ll stop for a picnic lunch (included!), and this ended up being one of our favorite moments. Sitting among the vineyards with a casual but delicious spread was such a nice break between tastings.

This tour offers the perfect blend of structure and flexibility. And there are plenty of five-star reviews here that attest to this, so you don’t just have to take our word for it!

Dinner – Scala Osteria & Bar

Pizza-eaten-in-Napa Valley California
Yum!

After a full day of tastings and a picnic lunch, you’ll be more than ready for a proper dinner. Scala Osteria & Bar is our go-to for your first night in Napa. Located on First Street in downtown, this vibrant Southern Italian spot serves up seafood-forward dishes alongside Neapolitan classics, all in a lively, coastal-inspired setting. On our trip, we shared the calamari and a pizza, and it really hit the spot!

It’s important to note here that reservations are highly recommended for this restaurant, especially if you’re traveling with a group of four or more people. We also suggest booking an earlier dinner if possible, as you have a very early start tomorrow morning for your hot air balloon ride!

Day 2

Morning –  See wine country from above on a hot air balloon ride

Hot-Air-Balloon-Ride-over-the Napa Valley on a tour from Napa California
A magical experience!

What a view

Normally, getting up before dawn isn’t my idea of a good time, but this sunrise hot air balloon ride over Napa Valley completely changed my mind. Watching the vineyards slowly light up beneath us as we drifted higher into the sky felt unreal.

This tour actually meets in Sonoma (about a 20-minute drive from Napa), with takeoff typically around 5:30 or 6 am, depending on the sunrise. I’ll admit, I was still half-asleep when we arrived, but the pre-flight coffee and pastries helped a lot. We even got to help with setting up the balloon, which ended up being a fun and unexpected part of the experience.

Once we were in the air, though, nothing else compared. Floating above Napa’s rolling hills and endless vineyards was incredibly peaceful, and the views looked straight out of a postcard. It’s quiet, calm, and just one of those moments where you kind of forget everything else.

The flight itself is smooth, and even the landing was so gentle it barely registered. From start to finish, the whole experience lasts about four hours, wrapping up around 10 am, so you still have the rest of your day ahead of you.

As cheesy as it sounds, this is one of those bucket-list experiences you won’t forget anytime soon. And with hundreds of glowing reviews, it’s no secret, so be sure to book early, because it does sell out fast.

Mid-day – Experience Sonoma on a food and wine tour

You can never go wrong with a charcuterie board
Chocolate-eaten-in-Napa Valley
Or chocolate!

Since you’re already in Sonoma (and probably getting a bit hungry from an early start), this food, wine, and history tour that runs from 11 am to 2 pm makes total sense! And even if your balloon experience ends as late as 10:30 am, you definitely won’t miss it, because the meeting point is just a 10-minute drive from the hot air balloon launch site.

We absolutely love this walking tour because it’s not just about food; it also gives you the chance to explore Sonoma, another must-visit area in California’s wine scene. Along the way, you’ll sample local cheeses, artisanal chocolates, and (of course) more fantastic local wine.

The guides are also knowledgeable and engaging, bringing the region’s history and food culture to life as you walk through the heart of Sonoma. And because you’ll be led by someone who really knows the area, you’ll get insight into spots you’d likely walk right past otherwise. A key highlight for me was passing by the original Williams Sonoma store just off Sonoma Plaza, so cool!

Honestly, this tour is the perfect excuse to slow down, refuel, and soak up the flavors of Sonoma after your morning adventure (you’ve earned it!).

Why We Book Tours with Viator

Viator is a trusted online booking system for tours around the world! We almost always book our tours using Viator for a couple of reasons:

  • Free cancellation on most tours – Most of the tours on Viator allow you to cancel and get a full refund up to 24 hours in advance. This is handy in case plans change, or if booking an outdoor activity, the weather forecast is looking grim.
  • Reserve now and pay later – You can secure your spot on some of the most popular tours well in advance and not pay until closer to the day of the tour.
  • Lowest price guarantee – If you happen to find the same tour at a lower price elsewhere, Viator will refund you the price difference.
  • Pay in your chosen currency – Avoid costly international transaction fees by choosing to pay in your home currency.
  • Peace of mind – When booking with tour operators you find in person on the street or in small booking offices, you are often promised one thing and given another. This online platform holds tour operators accountable with a written description of inclusions as well as the opportunity for customers to leave reviews.

Afternoon – Relax at your hotel or check out downtown Napa

The view of Napa in Napa Valley California
Downtown Napa

After an early morning and a wine-filled afternoon, a bit of downtime is definitely in order!

Once your tour has finished, head back to your hotel to take a nap or, at the very least, rest your feet for an hour or so. If your hotel has a pool, this is the perfect time to enjoy it! We loved just hanging out by the water and soaking up the California sun for a couple of hours.

If you get bored at your hotel, you can always head to downtown Napa early and check out some of the local shops. The downtown area isn’t huge, but it is very cute with boutiques, cozy cafes, and hidden gems around every corner. You can easily spend an hour or two just wandering in and out of all the shops along First Street and Main Street.

Dinner – Zuzu

When you feel refreshed and ready to head out again, make your way to Zuzu, a Spanish-inspired restaurant and tapas bar located in downtown Napa’s historic Old Town District, right by the river. Trust us, the atmosphere here is second to none and perfect for a relaxed evening!

For food, you’ll find a tapas-style menu that’s easy to share and try a bit of everything (which is half the fun!). Zuzu is also known for its gin cocktails, which are absolutely worth ordering if you’re in the mood for something other than wine.

Like last night’s dinner spot, Zuzu’s is super popular, so reservations are definitely recommended!

Evening – Stroll along the Riverfront Promenade

Enjoying some ice cream at Ben & Jerry’s!

After dinner, head just outside Zuzu and you’ll find a park and walking paths, perfect for a leisurely evening stroll. The riverfront is also lit up at night, making it a really peaceful and romantic place to walk off your dinner.

If you’re in the mood for something sweet, you can make your way to Ben & Jerry’s for some post-dinner ice cream, too, which is just a short walk away. The area around the river is worth slowing down for, so make sure to take it all in (and don’t forget to snap a few pictures for the ‘gram!).

Day 3

Breakfast – Model Bakery

A cappuccino and croissant is the perfect light breakfast

For your final morning, head to Model Bakery for breakfast. This is one of the most beloved bakeries in the area, known for its freshly baked pastries, excellent coffee, and hearty breakfast sandwiches that’ll set you up perfectly for a day of exploring the Napa Valley.

If you’re not sure what to order, you can’t go wrong with their famous English muffins. They’re Oprah (yes, Oprah!) approved and 100% worth it!

This stop works especially well with today’s plans, as both tour options start mid-morning. The bakery opens early (around 6:30 am), so you’ll have plenty of time to grab a bite before heading out, or you can always take a coffee and a pastry to go if you’re short on time.

If you’re doing the e-bike tour from Yountville, it’s about a 20-minute drive north, making this an easy and delicious first stop before your earlier 9:30 am start.

Option 1: E-bike through the wineries

Biking and wine? Yes, please!

A day of great views and even better wine

After breakfast, it’s time to get out and explore Napa Valley in a more active way. From 9:30 am to 3 pm, this e-bike tour is a fantastic option! It strikes that perfect balance between adventure and wine tasting.

With electric assist, it’s an easy, breezy ride, even if you’re not a regular cyclist. The route typically covers around 3–6 miles (5–10 kilometers), so it’s manageable while still giving you that immersive, up-close feel of the valley.

Everything is taken care of for you, including winery reservations, which makes the day super seamless. We even picked up a bottle or two along the way, and a shuttle collected it for us so we could keep riding without any extra weight.

The ride itself is one of the highlights. Much of it winds through quiet vineyard roads and scenic stretches, making it feel peaceful and removed from the busier parts of Napa. Plus, a picnic lunch from a local bakery, which is a nice break in the middle of the day.

But what we really loved most about this experience was how relaxed and personal it felt. The small group size keeps things intimate, and there’s plenty of time to enjoy each stop without feeling rushed. The tour includes visits to two wineries, often with a mix of a cozy, family-run spot and a more modern tasting room with wide-open vineyard views.

For a more hands-on way to experience Napa Valley, this is such a fun and memorable choice you don’t want to miss!

Option 2: Take a trolley tour through the wineries

If the idea of e-biking sounds a bit too ambitious, this wine trolley tour is a fun and easy alternative. Running from 10 am to 4:30 pm, it offers a more laid-back way to experience Napa Valley while still delivering a classic wine-tasting experience with a twist.

Instead of a typical van or bus, you’ll climb aboard a replica of San Francisco’s iconic cable cars, which adds a quirky, nostalgic feel to the day. You’ll visit four different wineries, each with its own unique atmosphere. From smaller, family-run spots to more polished tasting rooms with vineyard views, it gives you a nice variety and a well-rounded feel for the region.

Tastings aren’t included in the base price, which we actually loved, since it meant we could pick and choose what we wanted to try at each stop, rather than being locked into a set menu.

The open-air trolley setup makes it easy to chat with other travelers, and the whole day has a fun, easygoing vibe. Lunch is also part of the experience, giving you time to sit down, relax, and enjoy the scenery without feeling rushed between tastings.

If you want something a little different from the usual wine tour, and a great backup if biking isn’t your thing, this trolley experience is a fantastic choice.

Late Afternoon – Check out Oxbow Public Market

After your morning tours, you should have time to go back to your hotel, freshen up, and then head out for one final evening in Napa. We recommend starting at Oxbow Public Market, which is full of specialty shops and food stalls.

This is actually one of our favorite spots in Napa to just wander around without a plan. If you haven’t bought any souvenirs, this is a good place to pick up a few travel-friendly treats, like handmade chocolates or local olive oils. You can also grab a small snack before dinner if anything catches your eye. Even if you’re not hungry yet, the energy of the market is contagious, and it’s a must-visit spot in downtown Napa.

Dinner – Morimoto Napa

There is no shortage of amazing restaurants in Napa, but we love Japanese food, so we had to stop at Morimoto Napa, which offers incredible food and riverside views to boot!

The restaurant itself is lively and immersive, with an open kitchen and Momosan Sake Bar all adding to the energy. We ordered the duck fried rice and sticky ribs, and both were absolutely divine!

Again, like other restaurants in Napa (are you seeing a trend here?), reservations are recommended, as this is one of the most popular evening spots in town.

Evening – Sky & Vine Rooftop Bar

After dinner, make your way to the Sky & Vine Rooftop bar. It’s only a 10-minute walk away from Morimoto Napa, so you won’t have to venture very far!

We saved this spot for last because it offers sweeping views over downtown Napa, making it the perfect place for a final toast. You’ll also find a few firepits and outdoor games to enjoy, which we loved! Even though you’re just going for a drink or two, it’s still wise to make a reservation ahead of time, especially in peak season.

Where to Stay in Napa, California

Andaz Napa, By Hyatt in Napa Valley California 1
Photo credit: Andaz Napa, By Hyatt

For this specific itinerary, we recommend staying in downtown Napa or at least close by. This is the most convenient base for exploring (especially if you haven’t booked a rental car), as it’s fairly easy to get around between tour pickups and Ubers.

If you’re still looking for a place to stay, here are our top luxury, mid-range, and budget hotels around Napa.

Andaz Napa by Hyatt – $$$

If you want to stay right smack dab in the middle of downtown Napa, Andaz Napa by Hyatt is our absolute favorite luxury option.

The vibe is understated yet refined, with chic rooms featuring marble bathrooms, soaking tubs, and floor-to-ceiling windows. You can also expect a complimentary glass of house wine on arrival (what’s not to love about that?), and the location couldn’t be better for exploring Napa on foot.

In terms of pricing, you can expect rates around $300 to $600+ USD per night, depending on the season. Well worth it if you’re looking to splurge a little! See the latest room rates and book your Napa stay here!

R Inn Napa – $$

If you’re looking for something with more of a boutique feel, R Inn Napa is a fantastic choice. It’s set inside a beautifully converted historic building, which honestly feels more like you’re staying at a hideaway in Europe than California!

The common spaces here are definitely a highlight and include a peaceful garden and a shared lounge area, both perfect for unwinding after a day of tours. Guests also rave about the continental breakfast, which offers a selection of pastries, quiches, and (of course) coffee.

Rates for this hotel typically start at around $200 per night and can go up to $600+ USD, depending on the season and room type. Check availability and secure your stay here!

Hawthorn Suites – $

If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham Napa Valley is a solid choice. While it’s a bit more basic than the first two options on this list, it still provides clean, comfortable rooms, and it’s still conveniently located for exploring the valley. This option is a no-brainer if you plan to spend most of your time out and about on tours or shopping, rather than lounging around the hotel.

Here, you can expect rates to start from around $150 to $250 USD per night. Browse current rates and get your stay locked in!

Renting a Car in the USA

Car rental photo for the United States

The United States is a vast country with diverse landscapes, from bustling cities to scenic national parks. While public transportation exists in major cities, renting a car is often the best way to explore the country’s wide-open spaces and hidden gems.

We always book with Discover Cars and can’t recommend them enough. It’s super easy to compare prices, check company ratings, find the right vehicle for your needs, and add affordable full coverage insurance. If you want a full breakdown, check out our Discover Cars review here.

Tips for Renting a Car in the USA

  • Drive on the right: In the U.S., vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road, and the driver’s seat is on the left. If this is different than your home country, take some time to adjust before hitting busy streets!
  • Know the local rules: Speed limits, road signs, and driving laws can differ between states. For example, turning right on red is generally allowed after a complete stop, unless a sign indicates otherwise. Always check the specific rules for the states you’ll be driving in.
  • Add full insurance: We always recommend full coverage rental insurance, especially in the U.S., where long distances, varying road conditions, and unpredictable weather can lead to unexpected situations. Discover Cars makes it easy (and affordable!) to add this peace of mind when you book.
  • Choose the right car: Consider the nature of your trip. For city driving, a compact car is convenient, while for road trips or national park visits, an SUV might be more comfortable. With Discover Cars, it’s easy to filter by vehicle type, transmission, fuel efficiency, and more to find the perfect fit.

What You Need to Rent a Car in the USA

  • A valid driver’s license from your home country.
  • An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended if your license is not in English or uses a non-Roman alphabet. Some rental companies may require it, so it’s best to check in advance.
  • A credit card in the driver’s name is typically required for the security deposit.
  • Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 years old, with a young driver surcharge applicable for those under 25. Some companies may have higher age requirements, so make sure you double-check.

AIRALO e-SIM Up To 15% Off With Code “DTRAVEL15”

What’s an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of buying a little plastic chip and swapping it into your phone, you just download it. It connects your phone to a local network in whatever country you’re visiting — no stores, no waiting, and no fiddling with tiny cards.

In simple terms, it’s the easiest way to get data and stay connected while traveling.

We’ve tested a bunch of eSIMs over the years, and after a few frustrating experiences, we’ve found our favorite — Airalo. It’s fast, reliable, and incredibly easy to use. You can set it up in minutes (even my mom managed it solo on her first try!), and the prices are some of the best out there.
