Honolulu is a fun destination year-round, so once you step off your cruise ship, you’ve got plenty to keep you busy. I’ve visited Oahu many times and tried tons of tours and activities around the island, so I know firsthand what’s worth making time for. You can snorkel, dive, go parasailing, chase waterfalls, catch a sunset, or even spend the evening at a Hawaiian luau.

But with limited time in port, you don’t want to waste it trying to figure out what’s actually worth doing. So, I’ve narrowed it down to the excursions I’d actually book myself, and all you have to do is choose the ones that sound the best. Here are my top 10 picks!

Why I Book Shore Excursions Independently  

I almost always book my shore excursions independently. I’ve used Viator many times, and I’ve never had an issue! The key is to choose tours specifically designed for cruise passengers, like the ones listed below. 

These tours are built around cruise schedules, with start times and pick-up locations that align with ship arrivals in port. They’re also typically much more affordable than booking directly through the cruise line, while offering many of the same experiences. Plus, if a ship-sponsored tour is sold out, you can usually find a very similar option independently.

Another big advantage is the experience itself. Independent tours often run in smaller groups, which makes things feel more relaxed and personal. You’re not stuck moving around in a huge crowd and competing to get the best views and shots! 

There’s also less risk involved than you might think. Many tours offer guarantees to get you back to the ship on time, and full refunds if your ship is late or misses the port altogether, so you can enjoy peace of mind while saving money. When booking, you’ll be asked for your cruise details so operators can plan accordingly and make sure you’re back well before all-aboard. 1. Snorkel above Turtle Canyon just off Waikiki

I really wanted to spot some sea turtles on my latest trip to Oahu, so I booked this Waikiki snorkel excursion!

​​The experience started with a quick briefing from our guide, who made sure everyone felt confident in the water before heading to Turtle Canyon. All the snorkeling gear was provided, so you don’t have to worry about packing anything extra, which is a huge bonus!

As soon as I dipped below the surface, it felt like stepping into another world. Hawaiian green sea turtles (aka “honu”) glided gracefully around the reef, sometimes coming so close I could see the intricate patterns on their shells! Turtles here are pretty much guaranteed, as they love this spot – I’ve seen some every time I’ve come here. 

Back on the boat, the excitement didn’t stop! Spinner dolphins made a surprise appearance as we were having a snack. It was the perfect way to end this amazing 2-hour experience.  

With multiple departures during the day, this tour is really easy to fit into any cruise itinerary. Plus, it’s just a 5-minute Uber ride from the port to the meeting point, and you get free cancellation if plans change. This is my all-time favorite activity in Honolulu, and with over 4,400+ 5-star reviews, I’m clearly not alone!

2. Spend the evening at a luau with music, stories, and food

I’ve been to quite a few luaus in Hawaii, and the Mauka Warriors Luau stands out as my favorite by far! You can even opt to include transport from the Pier 2 Cruise Terminal, so you don’t need to worry about driving or parking, which makes it really easy.

What I loved most was that the experience started before the show. My whole family got to try fun cultural activities like getting a temporary Polynesian tattoo, weaving coconut leaf headbands, and watching a traditional cooking demonstration. It felt interactive and not just like we were sitting down for a performance.

After that, we enjoyed a buffet dinner with a mix of Hawaiian and Polynesian dishes, and everything we tried was tasty and filling – the kalua pork and the grilled pineapple were standouts for me!

The show itself was fantastic and covered dances and stories from across Polynesia. The finale is what had us on the edge of our seats, though. The fire dancers were incredible, easily the best I’ve seen, and we’ve been to several luaus over the years! The energy, skill, and choreography were on another level – they even lit the ground on fire!

With just 4 hours to spare and port pickup available, I think this tour is a great fit for cruise passengers, especially if you have an overnight stay or late departure. Honestly, I think that this is one of the best cultural experiences on the island, and the thousands of glowing reviews certainly back that up!

3. Chase waterfalls, viewpoints, and local flavors around Oahu 

If you’re looking to see the best of Oahu in one day, this small-group tour is definitely worth checking out. In just 10 hours, you’ll get to see some of my favorite attractions on Oahu and learn about the island’s history and culture along the way.

Your first stop is Green World Coffee Farm, where you can try 100% Hawaiian coffee (at your own expense), and it’s the perfect way to wake up. I’ve had their house blend, which is smooth and flavorful, and I love how quiet and peaceful the farm is in the morning—it feels like a little hidden gem!

From here, you’ll head to Waimea Waterfall and Botanical Garden, where you’ll have about two hours to explore, so take your time walking around and enjoying this beautiful area. A huge advantage of this tour is that you’ll be among the first people at the waterfall, so you can swim, splash, and snap as many photos as you like before the crowds arrive. I always try to visit in the mornings for the most peaceful experience, so this gets my stamp of approval.

Around midday, it’s time for a well-deserved stop at the famous Kahuku food trucks, where you can taste some of the North Shore’s famous dishes. I tried the shrimp scampi plate from the iconic Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck here, and the garlicky goodness was exactly what I needed to keep exploring!

After that, you’ll head to the windward side of the island to some of my favorite viewpoints, including Nu’uanu Pali Lookout and the Halona Blowhole where you might spot whales in the distance if you’re lucky! It finishes off with a stop at Leonard’s Bakery for a tasty malasada, which is a Portuguese donut. They are made fresh and served warm, and while I love the original flavor, the ones filled with coconut cream usually call my name!

4. Visit Oahu’s top attractions and go snorkeling

If you have limited time to explore Oahu and want to see the island while still getting some time on the water, this full-day adventure is my pick! It covers a lot in one day, including some must-do Hawaii experiences I think everyone should try, like snorkeling with turtles and visiting the famous Dole Pineapple Plantation.

It starts with sunrise views from Diamond Head Lookout, before making your way to Eternity Beach, a hidden cove made famous in the movie From Here to Eternity. You’ll also stop at Tropical Farms for some macadamia nuts and Kona coffee, and Kahuku Farms for local produce like ice-cream bananas, which I tried, and they do taste creamy with even a hint of vanilla!  

And then there’s the Nuuanu Pali Lookout, where you can take in some of the most spectacular panoramic views in all of Hawaii. After lunch at the famous Kahuku Food trucks, the afternoon highlight is snorkeling with sea turtles at Haleiwa Beach Park. There’s also enough time at the Dole Plantation to ride the Pineapple Express train and taste the famous Dole Whip—my favorite!

The best part is that you cover most of the island, including some of its most famous sights and a few hidden gems. The only downside is that there’s no port pickup, so you’ll need to take a quick 10-minute taxi or Uber ride to the Ilikai Hotel & Luxury Suites.

Overall, this is a great option if you want to see a lot of Oahu in one day. And with 6,000+ reviews, it’s easy to see why it’s a favorite.

5. Learn to dive just minutes from Honolulu Harbor 

Looking to swap sightseeing for some water activities? This beginner scuba diving excursion is a fun way to give it a try and see if it’s something you’d like to do more of. Yes, there’s a good chance you’ll want to get certified and go diving on every vacation after this, as it’s that much fun!

Once you’ve had your safety briefing and been fitted with your gear, you’re ready to get in the water. The instructors take things at your pace and make sure you’re comfortable before your first dive, so take your time. At a maximum depth of 15 feet (4.5 meters), it’s beginner-friendly but still gives you a chance to see sea turtles, octopuses, sea stars, and tons of colorful fish.

The best part? Your instructor will stay with you during your dive and film everything with a GoPro. Yes, you get to take the footage home with you! I also really enjoyed the small-group experience. With no more than 16 people, it feels more personal and relaxed.

While there’s no port pickup, it’s still easy to get to the meeting point. Magic Island Lagoon is about 10 minutes by taxi or Uber from the port and is located inside Ala Moana Beach Park (check-in is 30 minutes prior to the tour). Head toward Lifeguard Tower 1G and look for the scuba tanks and gear. Just remember that you shouldn’t fly within 12 hours after diving, so make sure the timing works with your cruise plans. 

Overall, this is a fun way to spend some time off the boat, definitely gets the adrenaline going, and might just leave you wanting more.

6. Walk through the history of Pearl Harbor 

This guided tour to Pearl Harbor is one of the best things to do if you’re a history buff and want to learn about World War II without worrying about booking transportation, getting tickets, or planning everything yourself. This tour is especially convenient for cruise passengers, with port pickup and drop-off included, and at 6-7 hours, it fits nicely into your day since most ships stay in port until much later.

The tour starts with a short but powerful movie about Pearl Harbor, which, be warned, can be hard to watch. Then comes a ferry ride out to the USS Arizona, the very place where WWII began for the United States. From there, you’ll head to the USS Missouri, where the war officially came to an end. Walking through the ship and seeing the massive guns, soldiers’ bunk beds, the galley, and narrow passageways gives you a real look at what life at sea was like aboard a battleship.

And then you stand in the exact spot where Supreme Commander General MacArthur stood. Hearing how he intentionally made the Japanese delegation wait for his arrival makes the story even more fascinating. You’ll also see the spot where the surrender of Japan was signed, ending WWII. Trust me, you won’t forget this tour easily.

On the way back, you’ll pass by the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific and the King Kamehameha Statue, honoring the king who first united Hawaii. 

I love that this tour isn’t just another sightseeing stop, but a meaningful look into Hawaii’s history. Whether you’re a history buff or just want to understand more about Oahu beyond the beaches, this is one of the most impactful things you can do during your cruise stop.

7. Eat your way through Honolulu’s lesser-known food spots 

If you want to eat your way around Honolulu without wasting time on touristy restaurants, this small-group walking tour is a great option. After visiting Honolulu several times, I can tell you that one of the hardest parts is deciding what to eat, so having a local guide show you some of the best spots is a huge help!

Along the way, you’ll try everything from Filipino fried banana desserts, button shrimp, and chicken adobo to fresh local fruits, roast duck, and even Japanese octopus! The variety is really good, with cooked dishes and fresh raw options. And if you’re a sushi or poke fan, even better!

One thing to know is that there’s a LOT of food! If you can’t finish everything, no worries; you’ll get containers and ice packs to take the rest with you. What I like the most is that it’s more than just a food tour! You’ll also get to see a different side of Honolulu, with each tasting adding another story to the experience.

With a maximum of just 12 guests per group, it feels friendly and personal, making it a great way to escape the crowds and the ship buffet. Pickup and drop-off from the port are included, and with just three hours to spare, it can easily fit into your cruise day.

8. Capture the colors of Oahu with a local photographer 

If there’s one thing Honolulu isn’t short on, it’s incredible photo opportunities! This half-day excursion takes you to some of my favorite scenic spots around Oahu, with an expert to help you capture it all at a relaxed pace.

You don’t need any fancy cameras either! You can do it all from your phone. First, you’ll get some amazing views from Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout and Halona Blowhole, where ocean water can shoot more than 50 feet (about 15 meters) into the air. It’s also a great spot to look for whales and turtles, so keep your phone ready! 

After that, you’ll visit Waimanalo Beach, a huge and almost deserted beach, before ending at Hawaii Kai Lookout for some more panoramic views. At the end, you’ll feel like you got way more than just a tour. Your guide will have taken tons of photos of you at every stop, so it also feels like a photoshoot and a tour wrapped into one.

And then there’s lunch! You’ll get to try local favorites like kalua pork and coconut shrimp – so yummy! Pickup and drop-off is also included from the port and selected hotels, and with just 5 hours to spare, it works really well for cruise passengers who want to do a little sightseeing while taking some frame-worthy photos, or even get a special photoshoot if you dress the part.

9. Sail into sunset off the coast of Waikiki 

There’s nothing in the world quite like a Hawaiian sunset, so I jumped at the chance to do this sunset catamaran cruise the last time I was in Honolulu. Watching the sun go down over the Waikiki coast was pure magic!

We set sail from Kewalo Harbor just as golden hour began and were welcomed on board with a premium cocktail. The catamaran itself was spacious and comfortable, with plenty of room to soak in the views along Waikiki’s iconic coastline.

As the sun dipped lower, the sky exploded into a masterpiece of color – deep oranges, soft pinks, and vivid purples all blending together. The silhouette of Diamond Head against this vibrant backdrop was like something out of a postcard.

But it wasn’t just the sunset that stole the show. We spotted playful dolphins jumping out of the water, and from November to May, you might even catch sight of majestic humpback whales making their seasonal migration. The friendly crew also shared lots of interesting facts with us about the surrounding landmarks and marine life, which really enhanced the experience

We got one complimentary cocktail, and extra drinks were $8 USD, which wasn’t too bad. But if you want to upgrade, the VIP option comes with a souvenir cup, unlimited drinks, and early boarding so you can grab a good seat. 

For cruise passengers, this is a great way to spend a couple of hours off the ship and catch a beautiful Hawaii sunset without the usual crowds. The meeting point is just a 7-minute drive from the pier, and it’s best to arrive about 30 minutes before check-in. Uber, Lyft, or a taxi is your best bet since parking at the harbor is very limited.

10. Go parasailing

If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush with some unbeatable views, this parasailing adventure from Waikiki is a fun way to do it! You’ll start at Kewalo Basin Harbor with a quick safety briefing before getting strapped into a harness and ready for takeoff. Once the boat picks up speed, you’ll gently lift into the air and soar 700 feet (213 meters) above the crystal-clear waters of Oahu’s southern coast.

The views from up there are pretty amazing! You’ll see Diamond Head in the distance, with the turquoise ocean stretching out all around you. And if you’re ready for more adrenaline, you can upgrade to an 800-foot (244-meter) or 1,000-foot (305-meter) line.

It’s ideal for couples and families of three, as you can all enjoy the experience together. I love that there’s also an option to tag along on the boat if parasailing isn’t your thing, for a reduced price, while the person you’re traveling with gets to fly above the water. Just bring some extra cash if you want to get photos or GoPro packages afterward. 

This tour also works really well for cruise passengers, with over ten departures throughout the day and the meeting point just a 4-minute taxi ride from the pier. Plus, there’s free cancellation, which is always nice to have if cruise plans change.

Overall, this is a fun way to get your adrenaline going while seeing Oahu from a whole different angle.

Where to Stay Before or After Your Cruise

Most cruises visiting Honolulu either start or end right here on Oahu, especially the popular inter-island itineraries. Others sail to Hawaii from West Coast ports such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Seattle, so depending on your itinerary, you may want a hotel at either end of your cruise.

If Honolulu is your embarkation or disembarkation point, I recommend spending a night or two in Waikiki. It’s the best area for first-time visitors, with Waikiki Beach, restaurants, shopping, and plenty of things to do all within easy reach. Plus, you’re only a short drive from Honolulu Harbor, which keeps things nice and simple on cruise day!

If your cruise starts or finishes in Los Angeles, Santa Monica is my favorite area to stay. You’ll be close to the beach, restaurants, and some of LA’s most famous sights, so you can turn your cruise into an even bigger vacation. If you’ve ever dreamed of staying in that famous pink hotel on Waikiki Beach, this is the one. Located directly on Waikiki Beach, it’s steps from the best section of beach, has an oceanfront pool, and some of the top on-site dining in the area, including the legendary Duke’s Waikiki.

Rooms come with air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, fridges, and coffee makers, so you’re set up for relaxed beach days and easy mornings.
