Honolulu has several fantastic options, whether you want something convenient in Waikiki or a more traditional experience a little farther away. In this guide, I’m breaking down my four favorite luaus near Honolulu so you can easily decide which one is the best fit for your trip.

My personal FAVORITE luau is the Mauka Warriors Luau! I was impressed from the start with easy transport from Waikiki, pre-show activities like cooking demos, Polynesian tattoos, and hula lessons, and an amazing buffet dinner. Then we were treated to a showcase of Polynesia’s history with the best hula and fire dancers I’ve ever seen!
Why Attend a Luau in Honolulu?
Attending a luau is one of my favorite ways to learn more about Hawaiian culture. It’s an educational experience, but it’s also a really fun evening, typically involving traditional hula, storytelling, and even some fire dancing! There are often hands-on cultural activities to take part in as well, like headband weaving and cooking demonstrations, so this is something that I love to do with my family.
Going to a luau is also a great way to get to know Hawaiian food. Dinner is usually served buffet-style, so this is the perfect opportunity to sample as many different dishes as you can! Normally, there are classics like kalua pork, poi, and fish on offer, and there’s almost always some type of coconut or pineapple dessert.
I especially recommend attending a luau if it’s your first trip to Hawaii, although I still enjoy them as a repeat visitor. Booking one in Honolulu is also super convenient! While some luaus farther around Oahu are considered more traditional, staying close to the city means you can enjoy the full experience without spending an hour driving each way.

1. Mauka Warriors Luau

I’ve experienced several luaus across Oahu over the years, but the Mauka Warriors Luau is still my number-one choice! In fact, it’s my favorite luau I’ve attended anywhere in Hawaii.
We chose the option with transportation from Waikiki, which made everything much easier since we were traveling with kids. Even the journey there was fun, as our guide taught us a few Hawaiian words along the way.
Once we arrived, there were lots of cultural activities to try before dinner, and this is what really set the experience apart for me. My family and I had the best time getting hand-painted tattoos and learning how to weave coconut leaf headbands. I also really enjoyed the cooking demonstration with a traditional underground oven, because now I understand why kalua pork tastes so good!
The buffet was excellent too, and I’m not normally a huge buffet person! However, the performances were the biggest highlight of all. The dancing and storytelling were incredible, and the fire dancing was the best I’ve ever seen. My jaw genuinely dropped when the performers set the ground alight!
I honestly can’t recommend this experience enough. It’s now a really special memory that I share with my kids, and as far as I’m concerned, it ticks every box! But you don’t just have to take my word for it, because the thousands of glowing reviews suggest that I’m definitely not alone in this opinion.
2. Waikiki Rock-A-Hula Luau

I’ll be honest: if you’re looking for a traditional luau, I’d probably choose one of the other options on this list. However, if you want a fun night out right in the heart of Waikiki, this experience is hard to beat!
The Waikiki Rock-A-Hula Luau puts a unique twist on the classic Hawaiian luau by combining Polynesian traditions with iconic rock ‘n’ roll music. It definitely feels more like a theatrical production than a traditional cultural experience, but that’s all part of its appeal.
The evening begins with a Hawaiian welcome, a tropical drink, and fresh Maui Gold pineapple before you tuck into a generous buffet dinner. There’s plenty to choose from, including island-roasted pork, hulihuli chicken, lomilomi salmon, and vegetarian options, so everyone should be able to find something they enjoy.
After dinner, it’s time for the main performance, which blends hula and fire knife dancing with tribute performances inspired by music legends like Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson – yes, really! It might sound like an unusual combination, but trust me, you’ll be laughing and dancing along.
This luau definitely doesn’t take itself too seriously. The main goal is simply to give you a fantastic night out, so if that’s what you’re looking for, I think this is an awesome way to spend an evening in Honolulu, with plenty of over-the-top theatrical moments along the way.

If you’re dreaming of a beachfront Hawaiian luau, I think the Ka Moana Luau is one of the best options in Honolulu. It’s set beside the ocean, offering a beautiful backdrop and the chance to catch a gorgeous sunset – what could be better?
The evening starts with a variety of hands-on cultural activities, so you can learn a few Hawaiian traditions before dinner, like making flower leis or even trying your hand at hula. I think most people who come to Hawaii secretly wish they could dance the hula, so this is the perfect chance to give it a go!
Afterward, you’ll enjoy a generous Hawaiian buffet with island favorites before settling in for the evening’s Polynesian performance. Speaking of which, I like the fact that the performance is more traditional than some of Honolulu’s larger productions. The performers share stories through traditional music and dance from Hawaii, Tahiti, Tonga, and Samoa, so watching them is not just enjoyable, but also very meaningful. And of course, there’s an incredible fire knife finale.
You can either make your own way to this luau or choose the transportation option from select Honolulu hotels, which is handy if you don’t want to worry about getting there and back. Dinner and drinks are included too, so once you arrive, all you need to do is relax and enjoy the evening. In short, it’s perfect if you want something that’s both authentic and accessible!
4. Germaine’s Luau

If you’re looking to escape the busier, more commercial side of Honolulu for the evening, I think Germaine’s Luau is a fantastic choice. It’s located on a private beach in Kapolei, about an hour from Honolulu, although don’t worry about that because transportation from Waikiki is available if you don’t want to drive! To me, this experience feels closer to the classic Hawaiian luaus that many people picture before visiting the islands than some of the bigger productions in the city.
The luau begins with a traditional lei greeting before you settle in to enjoy a Hawaiian buffet packed with local favorites, including island fish, teriyaki beef, Hawaiian-style chicken, fresh pineapple, and haupia for dessert. Depending on the package you choose, you’ll also receive drink tickets, which you can exchange for fruity island cocktails – yum!
As the sun sets over the beach, it’s time for the Polynesian performance. You’ll see traditional hula, as well as Fa’ataupati, which is Samoan slap dancing. It’s so much fun to watch! Each performance celebrates the different cultures and traditions of the Pacific Islands, and it really does feel authentic. Plus, the beachfront setting makes the whole evening even more special!
If you’re happy to travel a little further from Honolulu, I think Germaine’s is well worth it. It offers a more old-school luau experience, alongside plenty of warm, Hawaiian hospitality.
When should I book my luau?
I usually recommend booking your luau around four to six weeks in advance, especially if you’re visiting during a busy period or have your heart set on a particular package. Many luaus offer several options with different inclusions, so booking early gives you the best choice.
I booked my most recent luau, Mauka Warriors, roughly two months ahead of time. There was still some last-minute availability closer to the date, but I wouldn’t rely on that if attending a luau is one of your priorities in Hawaii!
Do luaus include transportation?
Many luaus offer transportation, although it can depend on the package you choose. Two of the experiences on this list take place directly in Honolulu, so it’s easy to get there on your own, no driver needed!
The other two are in Kapolei, outside the busier parts of Honolulu. The drive is usually around 30 minutes without heavy traffic, although journeys from Waikiki can take longer (closer to an hour). Both offer transportation options, which makes life so much easier if you don’t have a rental car, or just want to enjoy a drink once you get there. I booked transport to the Mauka Warriors Luau because I was traveling with my kids, and that just made life a lot easier.
Should you book a luau in Honolulu?
Yes! However, a luau is one of the more expensive activities you can book in Hawaii, so I don’t recommend just picking one at random. If you’re going to be splurging on it, choose a highly rated experience that offers good value for money. All of the luaus on this list include impressive Polynesian performances, fun cultural activities, and generous meals so that you won’t go home hungry at the end of the night.
Honolulu isn’t known for its traditional luaus, but the city still has some fantastic productions, and the convenience is hard to beat, especially if you’re traveling with family. In my opinion, attending a luau is a must-do Hawaiian experience in Honolulu, especially if it’s your first trip to the islands!

I suggest staying in Waikiki, so you’re close to all the action, but since it’s THE place to be, finding a hotel from the hundreds of choices can feel overwhelming. Luckily, I have standout picks for all budgets – including my favorite beachfront hotel where we stayed for our last trip!
All the hotels below are in Central Waikiki for that classic Hawaiian vacation vibe and put you close to the beach and the best restaurants and shopping. My biggest tip is to book early – Waikiki is popular for a reason, and you don’t want to miss out on your top choice!
The Royal Hawaiian – $$$
If you’ve ever dreamed of staying in that famous pink hotel on Waikiki Beach, this is the one. The Royal Hawaiian is an icon, a Luxury Collection resort with its own stretch of sand and that “old Hawaii” glamour. Rooms are bright and tropical, with garden or ocean views, and the hotel’s location on Waikiki Beach makes it easy to enjoy Diamond Head views and live entertainment.

OUTRIGGER Waikiki Beach Resort – $$ (Where I stayed!)
The OUTRIGGER Waikiki Beach Resort is my favorite pick in Waikiki — I loved every minute of our stay! Located directly on Waikiki Beach, it’s steps from the sand and is home to the legendary Duke’s restaurant. I loved listening to the ocean from our balcony and watching the water turn golden at sunset. Plus, it was so easy for beach days since we went from our room to having our feet in the sand in two minutes!
Rooms come with air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, fridges, and coffee makers, so you’re set up for relaxed beach days and easy mornings. I also love the little extras like free water bottles and a beach bag, and daily cultural activities (think lei-making and ukulele lessons). Hotel Renew – $
Hotel Renew is a budget-friendly gem just one block from Waikiki Beach. This modern boutique hotel is known for its calming vibe and thoughtful touches, like beach towels and gear for guests to borrow. The bright, clean rooms are simple but comfortable, with plush beds and a 50-inch flat-screen TV for cozy nights in. Some rooms even have a partial ocean view or a balcony—perfect for sipping a morning coffee before hitting the sand.
