It had been a while since either of us had been on a Segway before, but our guide, Bob, made it easy from the start. He gave us a quick, helpful intro and had us rolling in no time. The small group made the experience feel personal, like a guided nature walk, just with wheels. 

We cruised past freshwater lakes, through shady forest paths, and along quiet stretches where birds flew overhead and alligators lounged in the sun.

Bob shared fascinating facts about the local ecosystem, the park’s history, and even pointed out spots we would’ve missed entirely on our own. We also stopped by the Environmental Education Center, where we saw endangered loggerhead turtles up close, and had the option to visit the Atalaya Castle afterward—an unexpected architectural gem tucked inside the park.

Myrtle Beach might be all about the boardwalk and surf, but after a few days of crowds and sunscreen, you’ll probably find yourself craving something quieter and cooler. This scenic river tour through the Waccamaw’s cypress-lined waters is exactly the kind of reset that hits the spot.

You’ll head to the boat launch to be welcomed by your captain with the kind of genuine Southern hospitality that feels completely natural. A husband-and-wife team runs the tour, and their love for the area comes through in every story they share.

It’s the kind of place where you can wander without a plan, hopping between ocean views and iconic stops like Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, The Bowery live music bar, and Pier 14.

One of the biggest highlights here is the SkyWheel Myrtle Beach. Towering over the boardwalk, this massive Ferris wheel offers sweeping ocean views from climate-controlled gondolas. There’s more to a South Carolina getaway than sunburns and souvenir shops. After a few days of beach-town buzz, we were ready to trade sand for cobblestones, and this Charleston and Fort Sumter day trip turned out to be one of the most rewarding parts of our entire vacation.

We hopped onto a comfy, air-conditioned motorcoach and kicked back while our driver, Wendy (who was incredible!), gave us a warm and easy start to the day. The first stop was a horse-drawn carriage ride through Charleston’s historic district. 

Rolling past grand mansions and cobblestone streets felt like flipping through the pages of a living history book. From there, we wandered through the City Market, picking up local crafts and snacks before boarding the harbor cruise. I couldn’t resist grabbing a sweetgrass basket and a bag of candied pecans—they made the perfect souvenirs (and snacks for the bus ride back).

The boat ride around Charleston Harbor came with live narration, boxed lunches, and close-up views of Fort Sumter—the very place where the Civil War began. 

It was equal parts relaxing and eye-opening. And just when we thought the day couldn’t get better, we arrived at Boone Hall Plantation. Touring the estate and original slave cabins brought South Carolina’s complex past to life in a meaningful way.

Everything was well-paced, well-planned, and so worth it! We loved how it combined history, scenery, and culture without ever feeling rushed, like getting the best of Charleston in one unforgettable day.

5. Explore Broadway at the Beach & visit the aquarium

Broadway at the Beach is the place to go when you want a little bit of everything in one spot. As one of the largest entertainment complexes in South Carolina, it’s packed with over 100 shops, restaurants, attractions, and nightlife venues—all set around a scenic lake with walking paths and bridges.

You can easily spend hours here jumping between activities. Grab lunch, browse the shops, or dive into some of the area’s biggest attractions like WonderWorks and Ripley’s Aquarium. The aquarium is truly a standout, with its famous shark tunnel where sea life glides overhead, plus hands-on exhibits like touch tanks and a popular penguin habitat. It’s also one of the best indoor options in Myrtle Beach, which comes in handy on hot or rainy days.

Mini golf here is on another level. You’ll find courses everywhere, each one more creative than the last—think towering volcanoes, pirate ships, jungle ruins, and even layouts with ocean views. Many go all out with waterfalls, caves, and interactive obstacles, turning what could be a simple game into a full-on attraction.

• Hawaiian Rumble Mini Golf – The most famous course in Myrtle Beach and home to the annual U.S. Pro Mini Golf Masters Tournament. It’s known for its tropical landscaping, fun obstacles, and a layout that’s just challenging enough to keep things interesting.

• Mt. Atlanticus Minotaur Golf – A multi-level course with great views and a quirky final hole challenge. Set on a rooftop, it offers a unique experience with winding paths, creative design, and a fun “19th hole” that can even win you a free game!

8. Learn to surf with a professional surf instructor

There’s something undeniably cool about surfing, until you’re standing on the beach wondering how in the world to start, that’s precisely why I booked this surfing lesson. Daniel already knows how to surf, but I was determined to figure it out – spoiler: I did!

You can choose between a one- or two-hour lesson, but we’d definitely recommend going for the full two hours if you want a solid chance at catching some good waves. It really makes a difference!

The instructor, Kevin, was the absolute best! He’s the kind of surfer who lives and breathes the ocean, but he never made us feel out of our depth. From the moment I met him, he was focused on safety, calm confidence, and, maybe most importantly, keeping things fun. After a quick dry-land session on paddling, popping up, and balance, we headed straight for the waves. 

Kevin stayed by our side the entire time, cheering us on, coaching us through choppy spots, and helping us adjust until we were finally catching waves. At one point, I swear I felt like I was in a surf movie—minus the perfect form, of course.

With small group sizes and a personalized approach, it never felt overwhelming or rushed. Just you, your board, the ocean, and a guide who truly wants you to succeed!

9. Wander Brookgreen Gardens

If you’re looking to slow things down and experience a different side of Myrtle Beach, Brookgreen Gardens is one of the most beautiful and unique places to visit in the area. Located just south of the city near Murrells Inlet, this sprawling property blends art, nature, and history into one unforgettable experience.

It’s actually one of the largest outdoor sculpture gardens in the US, featuring hundreds of works spread throughout carefully designed landscapes. As you wander the grounds, you’ll move between shaded walking paths, flower-filled gardens, and open spaces dotted with impressive sculptures. 

Beyond the gardens, there’s also a small zoo area showcasing native animals, along with boardwalk trails through wetlands that give you a closer look at the local environment. It’s a great way to mix in a bit of nature without venturing too far from Myrtle Beach.

Brookgreen even hosts seasonal events throughout the year, including popular light displays that transform the gardens after dark, which are well worth timing your visit around if you can.

10. Relive the golden age of soul at a high-energy Motown tribute show

Beach days are great, but when the sun goes down, you may want something more than just another round of mini golf. This Motown tribute at GTS Theatre is an easy upgrade, bringing powerhouse vocals, nonstop hits, and the kind of energy that keeps the whole crowd locked in.

From the moment the lights dim, it feels like stepping straight into a vinyl record. The performers don’t just sing the classics, but they fully channel the soul and swagger of legends like Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and the Temptations. The stage presence alone is enough to pull you in! You can tell they’re having just as much fun as the audience.

Songs like “Dancing in the Streets” get people moving fast. When we went, it didn’t take long before the crowd was swaying along (and a few people couldn’t resist getting up entirely). Whether you grew up with the Jackson 5 or just love a good throwback, the energy is hard not to get caught up in.

One of the best parts is the setting. The theater is small enough to feel personal but still lively enough to feel like a full-on show. It’s more like being part of the experience than just watching it.

There’s really nothing else like it in Myrtle Beach. It’s a mix of nostalgia, talent, and feel-good energy that sticks with you long after the curtain closes. Just don’t be surprised when you’re still singing along days later!

11. Paddle through winding marsh trails on a guided kayak tour

Turns out, Myrtle Beach’s most peaceful escape isn’t at the beach, it’s hidden in the winding salt marsh just behind it. This kayak eco-tour in North Myrtle Beach ended up being one of our favorite low-key adventures. No noise, no rush—just us, the water, and a whole lot of crabs.

We checked in (parking is $3 per hour and worth planning for) and got ready to hit the water. We went with a tandem kayak, but if you’d rather paddle solo, single kayaks are available too. 

Our guides gave us a quick crash course in paddling, and even as total beginners, we felt totally at ease. The water was calm, and the crew was chill, attentive, and made sure everyone felt confident before heading into the marsh.

The moment we left the dock, it felt like entering a different world. Tall grass swayed on either side of the narrow paths, herons swooped low over the water, and we even stopped to scoop up tiny hermit crabs. 

The vibe was laid-back, the views were unreal, and our guide kept things light while pointing out wildlife and dropping bits of local knowledge along the way.

This tour is calm, easy, and the kind of thing you don’t realize you needed until you’re out there doing it. It gave us a totally new perspective on the area—quiet, wild, and way more beautiful than we expected!

12. Sing along with the stars at Myrtle Beach’s ultimate tribute show

Myrtle Beach has its fair share of nightlife, but this is where the real icons come out to play. This tribute concert brings the biggest names in music history together on one stage with spot-on tribute acts so good, you’ll forget they’re impersonators.

From the moment the curtain rises, it’s pure energy! We saw five world-class tribute artists in one night, backed by a live band, dazzling lights, and dancers who didn’t miss a beat. The crowd was instantly on board—cheering, singing along, and soaking up every moment like it was the real deal.

Elvis shook the house, Adele gave us chills, and the Blues Brothers had us clapping like it was 1980. Each act was so committed to their character’s voice, look, and mannerisms. It felt like watching the real thing!

Located at Broadway at the Beach, the theater is right in the heart of the action. It’s easy to pair the show with dinner, drinks, or some souvenir shopping. And bonus: after the performance, the artists came out for free photos and autographs. No long lines, just genuine appreciation.
