San Diego is certainly a city of contrasts, and that’s exactly what makes it so fun to visit. One minute you’re in a buzzing downtown packed with restaurants and rooftop bars, and the next you’re walking along dramatic coastal cliffs or hanging out on a laid-back beach.

It’s also quite spread out, so where you stay really does make a big difference to your trip. After spending time exploring the city, we’ve put together this guide to the best areas to stay in San Diego, along with our top hotel picks for every budget. Let’s go!

Overview of the Best Areas to Stay in San Diego 

San Diego has a very varied feel depending on where you stay, which is why choosing the right area makes a big difference. These four neighborhoods each offer something different, whether you’re here for food and nightlife, beach time, or coastal views.

Downtown is the most convenient base, especially for first-time visitors, while La Jolla offers that classic Southern California coastline. Meanwhile, Pacific Beach and Mission Bay are all about being outside, and Point Loma sits a bit further out and feels more residential, with great views and a quieter atmosphere.

One thing to keep in mind is that San Diego is very spread out. We rented a car here, as public transport isn’t that great, and relying on Uber all the time gets expensive! 

• Downtown San Diego (Gaslamp & Little Italy) – Best for first-timers – This is the most central area, and staying here makes it easy to get to the waterfront and major attractions. We stayed at Wyndham San Diego Bayside, and we loved the bay views and convenient location near the harbor.

• La Jolla – Best for luxury travelers – This area is known for its dramatic coastline and upmarket feel, and it’s home to many of San Diego’s best beaches, views, and restaurants. Grande Colonial La Jolla is a stylish stay just steps from the ocean with a classic coastal vibe.

• Pacific Beach/Mission Bay – Best for lively beaches & outdoors – This area is all about long sandy beaches and plenty of outdoor activities. Pacific View Inn is a solid pick right by the beach with easy access to everything.

• Point Loma – Best for a quiet & scenic stay – This is a more residential area with ocean views and fewer crowds. Humphreys Half Moon Inn is a gorgeous waterfront hotel with a tropical resort feel and lots of space to relax.

Downtown San Diego

BEST FOR FIRST-TIMERS

Downtown San Diego is one of the best places to stay if it’s your first time visiting. It’s the most central area, and we thought the energy here was really fun and lively. We enjoyed checking out the great mix of restaurants and bars, and staying here also makes it super easy to get to the waterfront, which is one of the nicest parts of the city.

The Gaslamp Quarter is where you’ll find most of the nightlife, most of which is set in historic buildings – how cool is that? It’s a great place to go out, and then just a short distance away, you’ve got Little Italy, which is home to some of the best restaurants in the city. We came here quite a few times for dinner, then headed to the Gaslamp Quarter for drinks afterward.

The waterfront is another highlight, with spots like Seaport Village and the USS Midway Museum to check out. It’s also a great place for a stroll, especially around sunset. We also took a harbor cruise, which was a nice way to sightsee.

All in all, we think that Downtown is a great base if you want to be in the middle of everything. It doesn’t have that classic beachy feel, but it makes exploring the rest of San Diego really easy.

Gaslamp Quarter 

San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter – $$$

San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter is a great pick if you want to be right in the middle of the action. It’s located just steps from Petco Park and surrounded by bars and restaurants, so it’s perfect if nightlife is a big part of your trip.

The hotel feels modern and polished, with comfortable rooms and everything you’d expect from a Marriott stay. One of the highlights is the rooftop bar, which is a fun spot for a drink with views over the city. It’s a really convenient base if you’re planning to explore downtown and head out in the evenings.

Rooms here usually start at around $300 USD per night and can go up to $500+ USD depending on the season and room type.

Gaslamp Plaza Suites – $$

If you prefer somewhere with a bit more character, Gaslamp Plaza Suite is a fantastic option set in a historic building right in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter. It has a classic feel, and it definitely stands out from the more modern hotels nearby.

The rooms are spacious and have a slightly vintage vibe, which suits the building nicely. There’s also a rooftop terrace, which is a great place to relax and take in the city views. It also has a very flexible cancellation policy for peace of mind! Rooms here usually start at around $200 USD per night.

Comfort Inn Gaslamp Convention Center – $

Comfort Inn Gaslamp Convention Center is a solid budget-friendly option right in the heart of downtown. The location is a big win here, as you’re within walking distance of the Gaslamp Quarter, Petco Park, and the waterfront.

The hotel itself is simple but comfortable, with everything you need for a short stay. Breakfast is included, which is always a nice bonus, and the rooms are clean and practical. It’s not the most stylish option, but it’s reliable and well-located for the price, so we really can’t fault it. Rooms here usually start at around $140 USD per night.

Little Italy
Residence Inn by Marriott San Diego Downtown – $$$ 

Residence Inn by Marriott San Diego Downtown is a great option in Little Italy, especially if you want a bit more space. It’s set slightly back from the busiest streets, so it feels a little more peaceful, but it’s still just a short walk to the best restaurants and bars.

The hotel offers apartment-style suites with separate living areas and kitchens, which is ideal if you’re staying for a few days or just want more room to spread out. There’s also a pool and breakfast included, which adds to the overall value.

We think it’s a great choice for groups in particular because there are units available that can accommodate up to six people. Rooms here usually start at around $300 USD per night for a queen studio, and can go up to $600+ USD for a two-bedroom suite.

Wyndham San Diego Bayside – $$ 

Wyndham San Diego Bayside is one of the most convenient places to stay in this area, especially if you want to be right by the water. In fact, this is where we stayed! The hotel sits just on the edge of Little Italy, and we loved being able to walk to all of the delicious restaurants nearby. Waking up to views over the bay didn’t hurt, either!

The location made it so simple for us to explore downtown, and the rooms were comfortable and fairly modern. The pool was also a nice bonus. Rooms here usually start at around $250 USD per night.

La Pensione Hotel – $

La Pensione Hotel is a great budget-friendly option right in the heart of Little Italy. The location is hard to beat, as you’re surrounded by some of the best restaurants in the city and just a short walk from the waterfront.

The hotel has a charming, European-style feel, with smaller but well-designed rooms that make good use of the space. It’s not a full-service hotel, but it’s clean and comfortable, so we think it’s perfect if you’re planning to spend most of your time out exploring (and eating).

Rooms here usually start at around $170 USD per night, with free cancellation and no prepayment needed.

La Jolla 

BEST FOR LUXURY TRAVELERS

• Stunning coastline with cliffs and ocean views
• Upscale hotels and restaurants
• Lots of boutique shopping

Cons

• More expensive than other areas
• Further from downtown and main attractions

La Jolla is one of the most beautiful areas in San Diego, and it’s exactly what we picture when we think of the California coast! The cliffs are dramatic, and the water is a gorgeous shade of turquoise. 

This area definitely feels very upmarket compared to the rest of the city, and we loved spending time here because it felt a bit more refined, but relaxed. We liked checking out the cafes and restaurants, and the boutique shopping was excellent! It’s also one of the best spots in San Diego for beaches, with places like La Jolla Cove and La Jolla Shores both nearby.

In fact, one of the highlights here is definitely seeing the sea lions at La Jolla Cove. You can also kayak through the sea caves or just spend a day by the water. 

For us, the main downside of La Jolla is that it’s not the most central area. However, the upscale vibes and gorgeous coastal views are hard to beat. If you’re looking for a relaxing holiday with lots of beach time and nice dinners, we think that La Jolla is very hard to beat! 

La Valencia Hotel – $$$ 

La Valencia Hotel is one of the most iconic places to stay in La Jolla, and it’s hard to miss thanks to its signature pink exterior! It sits right above the coastline, so you’ve got incredible ocean views and easy access to the village and nearby beaches.

The hotel has a classic, old-school charm, with elegant interiors and a more traditional feel. There’s also a lovely outdoor pool and terrace overlooking the ocean, which is a great spot to relax after a day of exploring.

It’s a stylish stay in a prime location – what’s not to love? Rooms here usually start at around $600 USD per night.

If La Valencia is fully booked, Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa is another beautiful option set a bit more inland, but with a similar resort-style feel and lush gardens. It offers a peaceful setting with a full-service spa and a secluded atmosphere.

The Lodge at Torrey Pines is another standout nearby overlooking the famous golf course and coastline. It’s a luxury stay with stunning views and craftsman-style design.

Grande Colonial La Jolla – $$

Grande Colonial La Jolla is a great mid-range option in the heart of the village, just a short walk from the ocean. The location is excellent, as you’re close to shops and restaurants, as well as some of La Jolla’s best viewpoints.

The hotel has a classic coastal feel, with bright rooms and a relaxed atmosphere. There’s also an on-site restaurant with ocean views, which is a nice bonus. It’s a really solid choice if you want something comfortable and well-located without going all out on luxury. Rooms here usually start at around $400 USD per night.

Another great option right by the beach, with a more intimate, boutique feel, is Scripps Inn. It offers cozy rooms and easy access to the sand.

Sheraton La Jolla is also a stylish alternative with chic and contemporary rooms. We especially love the pool and lush gardens, and the fact that it’s super close to lots of international restaurants.

Sands Of La Jolla – $

Sands Of La Jolla is a great budget-friendly option if you want to stay in this area without paying the high price tag. It’s located a little further from the main village, but you’re still within a short drive of the beach and top sights.

The hotel is simple and no-frills, but it’s still clean, comfortable, and spacious. There’s also an outdoor pool, which is a nice touch. It’s not the most stylish option, but it’s a good pick if you’re looking to save money while still staying near La Jolla.

There’s also free parking, which is always a plus. Rooms here usually start at around $140 USD per night for a standard king.

If Sands Of La Jolla is unavailable, Holiday Inn Express and Suites La Jolla is another affordable option nearby with a small gym and breakfast included. It’s also well located, as it’s less than 2 miles from La Jolla Cove, and there are several cafes and restaurants within walking distance of the property.

The Shoal Hotel La Jolla Beach is another great alternative with a retro-modern design and a relaxed vibe. From the outside, it looks a bit like a beach motel, but inside it’s fairly stylish and spotlessly clean!

Pacific Beach/Mission Bay 

BEST FOR LIVELY BEACHES & OUTDOORS

Pros

• Long sandy beaches and loads of outdoor activities
• Fun, social atmosphere with plenty of bars and restaurants

Cons

• Can feel busy and a bit rowdy, especially in Pacific Beach
• Further from downtown and main city sights

Pacific Beach and Mission Bay are perfect if you want a more active, beachy stay in San Diego. This is where you come for long days by the water with a social, energetic vibe. The two areas are slightly different, but it’s easy to walk or cycle from one to the other via the oceanfront boardwalk.

Pacific Beach (or PB, as it’s often called) is the livelier of the two. The boardwalk is always buzzing, with people cycling and skating, and we enjoyed hopping between beach bars and cafés – especially Bar Ella and Kono’s Cafe. All in all, we really enjoyed the atmosphere here, especially in the afternoons before the sunset crowds rolled in. It’s a great spot if you want that classic California beach scene.

Just next door, Mission Bay has a slightly different feel. It’s calmer and more spread out, with sheltered waters that are perfect for kayaking and paddleboarding. It’s a better fit if you’re traveling with family or just want a bit more space to unwind.

This area is best for travelers who want easy beach access and plenty to do outdoors. It’s not the most central base, but if your trip revolves around the beach, it’s a really fun place to base yourself!

Ocean Park Inn – $$$ 

Ocean Park Inn is one of the best beachfront stays in Pacific Beach, and the location really is the highlight here. It sits right on the boardwalk, so you can step outside and be straight onto the sand within seconds.

We love this spot if you want to fully lean into the beach lifestyle. The oceanfront rooms have balconies with incredible views, and there’s a pool and hot tub overlooking the beach, which is such a nice touch. It’s a great choice if you want something comfortable with a prime location and easy access to everything PB has to offer.

Rooms here usually start at around $350 USD per night and can go up to $600+ USD depending on the season.

If Ocean Park Inn isn’t for you, Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa and Marina is another great option set on the calmer waters of Mission Bay. It has a more resort-style feel with multiple pools and waterslides, plus a full-service spa, so it’s a fantastic choice for families and couples.

Pacific Terrace Hotel is another excellent beachfront option right along the boardwalk. It’s super stylish with spacious rooms and a lovely pool that overlooks the water.

Pacific View Inn – $$ 

Pacific View Inn is a great mid-range option if you want to stay right by the beach without spending a fortune. It’s located directly on the boardwalk, so you’ve got the sand and all the action just outside your door.

The rooms are simple but modern, and many have ocean views, which really elevate the experience. It’s not a full-service hotel, but the location more than makes up for it. We think it’s a great pick if you want something well-priced in a prime spot. Rooms here usually start at around $300 USD per night.

If Pacific View Inn is sold out for your travel dates, Surfer Beach Hotel is another solid beachfront option with a fun, laid-back vibe and a popular oceanfront restaurant. It’s a great pick if you want something social and right by the waves.

Bahia Resort Hotel is also a great alternative over in Mission Bay with a more relaxed setting. It has a private beach and tropical grounds right opposite the water. 

GreenTree Inn San Diego Mission Bay – $

GreenTree Inn San Diego Mission Bay is a solid budget-friendly option if you want to stay near the beach without the higher price tag. It’s located slightly inland, so you’ll need a short drive to reach the sand, but it’s still very convenient for exploring both Pacific Beach and Mission Bay.

The hotel is simple but comfortable, with clean rooms and everything you need, like a gym, laundry facilities, and a hot breakfast served each morning. It’s a good choice if you’re trying to keep costs down in San Diego while still being close to the coast. Rooms here usually start at around $130 USD per night.

If you’re looking for a backup option, Pacific Shores Inn is also an affordable option closer to the beach with a simple, no-fuss setup. We think it’s a good pick if location is your main priority.

Best Western San Diego Pacific Beach/Mission Bay is another reliable alternative nearby with a pool and comfortable rooms. It offers good value and easy access to both areas.

Point Loma

BEST FOR A QUIET & SCENIC STAY

Pros

• Beautiful ocean views and coastal scenery
• More local, residential feel with fewer crowds

Cons

• Less central than other areas
• Fewer hotel and restaurant options nearby

Point Loma is one of the most underrated areas to stay in San Diego, especially if you’re looking for somewhere a bit more chilled out! It has a more residential feel compared to places like Pacific Beach or Downtown, which we really liked after spending time in the busier parts of the city.

For us, what makes this area stand out is the scenery. The coastal views are incredible, especially around Sunset Cliffs Natural Park, which, as I’m sure you can guess from the name, is an incredible sunset spot! You’ve also got Cabrillo National Monument nearby, which offers panoramic views over the ocean and back towards the city. And if you enjoy history, don’t miss Old Point Loma Lighthouse.

Another spot we really liked is Liberty Station, a former naval base that’s been turned into a hub for restaurants, cafés, and shops. It’s a great place to wander around and grab a bite to eat. We went at lunchtime and loved the sandwiches at Con Pane!

We think that Point Loma is best for travelers who want a scenic, slightly slower-paced stay. It’s also a good option if you’ve been to San Diego before and are looking for something different this time. To be honest, it’s not the most convenient base, but if you’ve got a car and want something a bit more peaceful, it’s still a great option.

The Inn at Sunset Cliffs – $$$

The Inn at Sunset Cliffs is all about the views. It sits right along the coastline, so you’ve got uninterrupted ocean views, and some of the best sunsets in San Diego just steps from your room.

We think this is such a special spot if you’re looking for something a bit more peaceful and scenic. The hotel has a boutique feel, with stylish rooms that really fit the setting. There’s also a small pool overlooking the ocean, which is a lovely place to unwind.

It’s not right in the middle of the action, but that’s kind of the point. This is somewhere you come to just relax and enjoy the surroundings. Rooms here usually start at around $350 USD per night and can go up to $600+ USD depending on the season.

If The Inn at Sunset Cliffs is fully booked, DoubleTree by Hilton San Diego Bayside is another great option nearby with a more classic hotel setup. It offers comfortable rooms and a convenient location, as it’s less than a 20-minute drive from the Gaslamp Quarter.

Humphreys Half Moon Inn – $$ 

Humphreys Half Moon Inn is a really fun and unique stay in Point Loma, with a tropical, resort-style feel that’s a bit different from your typical city hotel. It’s set right on the waterfront, with palm trees, marina views, and a laid-back atmosphere.

We love this place if you want something relaxed but still well-equipped. There’s a large outdoor pool, live music events, and plenty of space to unwind. It’s also close to Shelter Island, which is a great spot for a walk by the water. Rooms here usually start at around $300 USD per night.

If Humphreys is booked up, Bay Club Hotel and Marina is another great waterfront option nearby with beautiful marina views. It offers spacious rooms, and we love the outdoor fire pits, which are ideal for chilly evenings by the sea.

Sea Harbor Hotel – $

Sea Harbor Hotel is a great budget-friendly option in Point Loma, especially if you want something simple in a really nice location. It sits right by the marina, so you’ve got lovely water views and easy access to waterfront walks.

The hotel itself is pretty basic, but it’s clean, comfortable, and does exactly what you need for a short stay. We think it’s a great choice if you’re planning to spend most of your time out exploring and just want somewhere affordable to come back to. Rooms here usually start at around $150 USD per night.

If Sea Harbor Hotel is fully booked, The Pearl Hotel is another great alternative nearby with a more boutique feel. It has a retro-inspired design, a stylish pool area, and a fun, slightly quirky vibe that makes it stand out.

Top Activities to do in San Diego

Once you’ve got your home base locked in, it’s time for the fun part—exploring San Diego! From iconic sights to unforgettable experiences on land and sea, this city has way more going on than just its beaches. These are the tours that we loved the most.

• See the city the easy way – This hop-on hop-off trolley tour made exploring San Diego completely stress-free, with stops at all the major sights like Balboa Park, Old Town, and Coronado. We loved the flexibility to explore at our own pace, plus the live commentary made it way more fun than figuring everything out ourselves.

• Spend the day at the world-famous zoo – If you want to experience one of the best zoos in the world, packed with thousands of animals and lush, immersive exhibits, these San Diego Zoo tickets are a must. The guided bus tour and Skyfari tram made it easy to navigate, and we could’ve easily spent the entire day here.

• Go whale watching the scenic way – This sailing whale watching tour aboard a historic schooner was hands down one of our favorite experiences, with plenty of space to relax and incredible views all around. Seeing whales and dolphins up close without the crowds or noise of a motorboat made it feel even more special.

• Step aboard a real aircraft carrier – With hands-on exhibits and real stories that bring the ship to life, this USS Midway Museum tour is far from your typical museum. Exploring everything from the flight deck to the crew quarters gave us a whole new appreciation for life at sea.

• Explore by land and water in one go – This amphibious sightseeing tour was such a fun and unique way to see San Diego, starting on the streets before splashing right into the bay. It’s an easy, entertaining way to cover a lot of ground while learning about the city along the way.
