The tour kicked off at Casa Azul, aka the Frida Kahlo Museum. It’s a true treasure trove of art and history. The rooms are beautifully preserved, and filled with Kahlo’s iconic works, personal artifacts, and colorful clothing.
However, what sets this tour apart is that we also got to visit the Diego Rivera Museum, which is dedicated to the life and works of Frida Kahlo’s husband. They were actually married twice, and it was so interesting to learn about Rivera, who was a complicated and troubled artist.
Finally, it was onto the Coyoacán Market, which was such a treat. We were so glad to have our guide with us to help us navigate the lively market and its varied, colorful stalls.
To finish off, we sat down for lunch at one of the market’s top restaurants, which serves up super tasty traditional cuisine. We loved this spot, and have even come back to eat here again quite a few times since we did this tour!

This half-day tour was the perfect way to immerse ourselves in the life of Frida Kahlo and the vibrant Coyoacán neighborhood.
Our guide, Sebastian, was a fantastic storyteller, and he painted a vivid picture of the neighborhood’s history as we explored. He really helped us to understand how Coyoacán shaped Frida Kahlo’s world and influenced her art.
We especially loved stopping at the Coyoacán Market, where we got to eat some of the best churros we’ve ever tasted! And as if that weren’t enough, we also got to snack on crispy tostadas and drink refreshing agua fresca. Sebastian also took us to chat to some friendly local vendors, which was pretty cool.
The tour wrapped up outside the iconic Casa Azul, Frida Kahlo’s former home which is now a museum. We had skip-the-line tickets and we had as long as we liked to explore by ourselves. This is one of the best art museums in the world, so we really liked being able to take our time!

This private tour is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. It was just us and our guide, Armando, and so we got a really intimate and personalized look at the Coyoacán neighborhood and the life of Frida Kahlo. Having a private guide allowed us to move at our own pace and ensure that the tour was tailored to our interests.
We started our journey at the Frida Kahlo Museum, where we were able to step into the legendary artist’s world. Then, after visiting her former home, we stepped out to explore the Coyoacán neighborhood, where she spent much of her life.
Armando took us on a deep dive into the area’s history and heritage, and also showed us hotspots that Kahlo was known for frequent. Of course, stopping for coffee in this Bohemian neighborhood is a must, so Armando took us to a hole-in-the-wall cafe, which we absolutely loved.
After exploring Coyoacan, we continued onto the Gardens of Xochimilco, where we boarded a traditional boat for a relaxing ride along the canals on a traditional trajinera. We loved drifting past the beautiful gardens and the atmosphere on the water was lively, with lots of music and locals.

Where to Stay in Mexico City
Mexico City is massive, and there are lots of different areas to stay in depending on what you want to get out of your trip. Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico – $$$
For luxury travelers, Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico is a top choice. This incredible 5-star hotel has the BEST location since it’s right in the Zócalo – the main plaza in the city. This is a beautiful, historic hotel with a lobby that looks like it belongs in a movie! You’re within walking distance of so many of Mexico City’s best sights and the rooms are spacious. Plus, breakfast on the rooftop terrace is a highlight!
Rooms start at $220 USD per night, but you’ll save a lot on transportation costs since you can walk to so many amazing places! Book a room online here.
Hotel MX Roma – $$
Hotel MX Roma is a clean, medium-budget hotel in La Roma, close to shops, bars, and restaurants. It has both standard and family rooms equipped with air conditioning, private bathrooms, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen satellite TV. It offers a space with a terrace to enjoy with family or friends, private parking, a gym, free bikes, and 24-hour front desk service. It’s also an allergy-free property, so there’s no smoking and they use hypoallergenic products.
Rooms run $150 USD in peak season. However, you can snag one as cheap as $70 USD a night when you book in advance online!
Hostal Regina Downtown – $
For budget travelers, Hostal Regina Downtown Mexico City is a fantastic option. Located in the Historic Center of the city and near the popular pedestrian-only street, Calle Regina, you’ll be right in the action. They offer dorm or private rooms that are clean, modern, and well-rated. This definitely has more of a party vibe, offering free beer and pizza to get the party going, but it’s a fun and convenient stay!
Dorm beds start around $14 USD and private rooms are around $45 USD per night. Check availability and book this stay on Booking.com or on Hostelworld.com.
Renting a Car in Mexico
Undoubtedly, one of the best ways to get around Mexico is in a rental car.
I struggled to get around by bus and taxi for the longest time. But after renting a car in Cancun in 2023, I never looked back. It allowed me to explore the country without worrying about tours or taxis. It was why I fell in love with Mexico and eventually decided to live here periodically.
I refuse to use local services whenever I rent a car in Mexico. The truth is they sometimes can’t be trusted or come with hidden fees (or costly insurance that doesn’t make sense.) There are even rental car scams! So instead, I use Discover Cars, the company most experienced travelers or ex-pats in Mexico recommend. Read my honest review of Discover Cars here for more details!
The rates on Discover Cars are cheap, too, with the average rental costing around $25 USD per day. Full coverage insurance can be added for an extra $10 USD a day too.
Driving in Mexico also only requires a driver’s license using the Roman alphabet. If yours uses another like Japan and China, you simply need an international driving permit.
Insurance is required, but if you book with Discover Cars and get the full coverage, that’s all you need! Oh, and being over 18 is required, and if you’re over 25, your rental will be much cheaper!

If you’re looking to save money on travel insurance, we currently use and recommend SafetyWing. We’ve been using their coverage since 2018 and they’ve had our backs when we needed emergency flights and got sick overseas.
