The Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Italy, no matter which town you choose. With that said, on our extensive travels through the area, we’ve discovered that each area has its own unique vibe, so it’s important to choose the best one for you. 

From the famous towns of Positano and Amalfi to the quieter areas of Praiano and Ravello, we’re going to break down the pros and cons of each area to help you plan the perfect trip. We’ve even got hotel recommendations for every budget and tips on getting around. Let’s go!

Where To Stay on the Amalfi Coast Map

Overview of the Best Areas to Stay on the Amalfi Coast 

The Amalfi Coast is stunning, but it’s definitely not a budget destination. Honestly, accommodation is going to be expensive no matter which town you stay in, but Positano and Amalfi are the most popular, and therefore the priciest. Sorrento is a little farther out, but it offers more variety and tends to be a bit more affordable (by Amalfi Coast standards, anyway).

Meanwhile, Praiano and Ravello are smaller towns that tend to be less busy than their more popular counterparts, so these are good options if you’re looking to get away from the crowds.

As for getting around the Amalfi Coast itself, well, let’s say it can be a bit of an adventure! The traffic is heavy, and the roads are narrow and winding, so driving can feel hectic at times. If you don’t want to deal with that, there are plenty of public buses that can take you around, or you can do what we did and book some tours! This is an especially good option if you want to stay in just one town and do some day trips to see the others.

• Positano – Known for its steep cliffs, pastel buildings, and sweeping sea views, Positano is the Amalfi Coast’s most iconic (and photogenic) village. Hotel Savoia offers classic charm and a central location just steps from the beach.

• Sorrento – Sorrento is a lively town just outside the official Amalfi Coast, with great transport links, charming architecture, and more budget-friendly stays on offer. Speaking of which, Hotel Tasso Suites & Spa offers great value for money in the heart of town.

• Amalfi – Set below steep cliffs, this postcard-perfect town has tons of history and beautiful beaches – no wonder it’s so popular! Amalfi Suite Boutique Hotel is a top-rated hotel with stunning cathedral and coastal views.

• Ravello – Perched high above the coast, Ravello is peaceful and elegant, known for its gardens, music festivals, and romantic views. Hotel Graal offers a sophisticated stay with a gorgeous infinity pool and epic ocean panoramas!

• Praiano – This quiet village between Positano and Amalfi is ideal for travelers who want coastal views without the crowds. Hotel Costa Diva offers sea-view rooms and beautiful gardens.

Where to Stay on the Amalfi Coast 

Positano

Positano is indisputably the crown jewel of the Amalfi Coast. It’s a glamorous village built vertically into the cliffside, offering all the iconic scenery and romance that visitors flock to Italy for. With its pastel-colored houses, chic boutiques, and gorgeous coastal views, it’s no surprise that this place is so popular. It really does offer the quintessential Amalfi experience.

Top sights include the Church of Santa Maria Assunta with its iconic dome, the pebbled Spiaggia Grande beach, and the scenic Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) hiking trail, which begins just above town. Ferries and boats make it easy to visit nearby towns like Amalfi or Capri, and guided tours often start here too. So not only is Positano beautiful, it’s also convenient! 

However, since Positano is so desirable, it doesn’t come cheap. It’s one of the most popular places to stay on the Amalfi Coast, and it’s highly sought after for honeymoons and luxury vacations. 

I wouldn’t recommend Positano to anyone with mobility issues because there are a ton of stairs. On the upside, my calves have never been so toned as they were after staying here!

• Expensive and often crowded
• Lots of stairs and steep inclines

Hotel Savoia – $$$

Hotel Savoia is a family-run gem that delivers classic Positano style and an elegant four-star stay. It’s in a prime location, as you’ll be just a short stroll from both the beach and the town’s best shops and restaurants. The rooms are bright and elegant with tiled floors, arched windows, and balconies that look out over the colorful village and sea. 

We just love the old school glamor of this place. Well, that and the fact that breakfast is included with your stay, so you can expect flaky pastries, fresh pancakes, and seasonal fruit each morning—yum! Rooms here typically range between €500 and €1,000 per night.

Hotel Posa Posa – $$

We loved our stay at Hotel Posa Posa! It’s located in the upper part of town, which means sweeping views of the coast and a bit more peace and quiet. We think it’s a great choice for groups because triple and quadruple rooms are available.

It takes about 20 minutes to walk down to the beach from here, and there are a lot of stairs involved, so this hotel is best for travelers who don’t mind the climb. But for us, the tradeoff was more than worth it for the incredible views we enjoyed! Plus, there’s a lovely plunge pool on the roof terrace so you can always splash and sunbathe there instead.

Rooms here cost between €400 and €850 per night, and this price includes breakfast. This hotel books up fast, though, so reserve your room ASAP!

Positano Art Hotel Pasitea – $$

This stylish hotel blends Mediterranean character with a splash of modern flair. Each room at Positano Art Hotel Pasitea comes with a sea-view balcony, handmade tilework, and sleek, artistic touches. It’s located in a quieter part of Positano, but you can still walk to the town’s restaurants and shops.

Personally, I think it’s nice to be a little removed from the hustle and bustle, especially during peak season. The staff are super, a free airport shuttle is available, and some rooms even come with spa tubs and floor-to-ceiling views.

It’s not a beachfront property, but the serene setting and fair price more than make up for that if you ask me! Rooms here typically cost between €450 and €775 per night.

Sorrento

Sorrento isn’t technically on the Amalfi Coast, but it is a gateway to the area! Perched above the Bay of Naples, this lively town is ideal for travelers who want a taste of the dolce vita without paying Amalfi Coast prices.

It’s also flat and walkable, which is rare for this part of Italy, so we think it’s a great choice for families, older travelers, and anyone who doesn’t want to tackle steep hills every day.

Sorrento boasts a historic old town, stunning sea views, and easy access to Pompeii, Capri, Naples, and the Amalfi Coast, so it’s a fantastic base for day trips. You can catch ferries, trains, or buses to most places from here. 

While Sorrento isn’t as glamorous or romantic as Positano or Amalfi, it’s charming in its own right, and it’s still very pretty. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still busy with tourists, but it’s larger and a bit more spread out, so it doesn’t feel as congested.

And while it’s not exactly cheap to stay in Sorrento, you do tend to get a bit more for your money here. So if you’re looking for flexibility, comfort, and value, Sorrento ticks a lot of boxes.

• More affordable and accessible than Amalfi Coast towns
• Excellent transport links for day trips

Cons

• Lacks the dramatic scenery of towns like Positano
• Can feel more like a city than a coastal village

Hotel Palazzo Guardati – $$$

Hotel Palazzo Guardati is an elegant hotel right in the heart of Sorrento, just steps from Piazza Tasso. It’s housed in one of the town’s oldest noble buildings, and the interiors reflect that timeless charm with chandeliers, rich fabrics, and beautiful marble details.

The rooftop terrace and pool offer incredible views over the harbor and Mount Vesuvius. Staying here really does make you feel like royalty, and the location makes it perfect for sightseeing, dining, or catching the ferry to Capri. Prices for a classic double room typically range from €275 to €425 per night, depending on the season and view.

Hotel Tasso Suites & Spa – $$

Located just a short walk from Piazza Tasso, Hotel Tasso Suites & Spa is a modern boutique hotel that offers great value in central Sorrento. Rooms are bright and contemporary, with sleek design and comfy beds. Some suites even come with small kitchenettes, which can help you save money on dining out. 

Plus, the on-site spa is a relaxing bonus after a long day exploring the Amalfi Coast. All in all, this place is clean, affordable, and right in the middle of the action. We think it’s hard to beat for the price! Speaking of which, expect to pay around €235 to €335 per night for a double room.

Hotel Villa Di Sorrento – $$

Hotel Villa Di Sorrento is a family-run property in a stellar location just off the main square and close to the train station. Basically, Sorrento is your oyster when you stay here! The rooms are simple but cheerful, with colorful tile floors and balconies that overlook the town.

It’s a great pick for anyone who appreciates warm hospitality and a generous breakfast spread. If you’re looking for a friendly, no-fuss stay that still puts you near all the sights, this place fits the bill. Rooms usually cost between €200 and €415 per night, depending on the season.

Amalfi

Amalfi is the coast’s namesake town, and naturally, it’s one of the most iconic spots to stay in! Once a powerful maritime republic, today it’s a compact, picturesque town that blends history, natural beauty, and those quintessential dolce vita vibes. 

It’s also a transport hub, so if you want to explore the wider region, this is a more convenient base than Positano. You’ll find easy access to boat tours and buses here, so it’s an especially good choice if you want to explore the Amalfi Coast without hiring a car.

Getting in and out of Amalfi generally requires less travel time and fewer transfers compared to Positano, so it may be worth sacrificing just a little bit of glamour for the sake of convenience. 

And it’s not as if Amalfi doesn’t have charm in spades! It’s very walkable, with winding pedestrian lanes, lots of local shops, and plenty of friendly seaside cafés. 

The town’s biggest attraction is the impressive Amalfi Cathedral, which sits right in the center and overlooks a lively piazza. Relaxing at the beach is a must (duh!), and you’re also just a 20-minute drive from the famous Lemon Trail! 

If you’re after a historic town with good transport links and a more grounded, local feel, Amalfi is an excellent choice.

Pros

• Walkable and well-connected by ferry and bus
• Charming historic center with fewer stairs than Positano

Cons

• Still very popular, so expect crowds
• Beach area is small and can get packed

Residenza Luce – $$$

Residenza Luce is a small, family-run hotel right off the main square in Amalfi, and it’s a real hidden gem. The rooms have modern furniture but a touch of rustic Italian style with wooden ceiling beams and balconies that overlook the street below.

This place has garnered an excellent reputation thanks to its personal touch and thoughtful service. The complimentary breakfast is served on a rooftop terrace with incredible views of the cathedral, and the central location makes it easy to explore Amalfi on foot. I really can’t fault it!  Rates typically range from €275 to €550 per night, depending on the season.

Amalfi Suite Boutique Hotel – $$

Amalfi Suite Boutique Hotel is a chic little hotel tucked away in a quieter corner of town, just a short walk from the main piazza. It offers spacious, airy rooms with a minimalist design, so we think it’s perfect if you prefer contemporary style over old-world charm. The calm, tucked-away vibe makes it feel like a peaceful retreat after a busy day sightseeing.

It’s quiet, clean, and very comfortable, with friendly staff and a yummy breakfast included. It’s also close to the beach and ferry port, making it easy to plan day trips. Rooms usually cost between €300 and €400 per night, depending on availability.

Hotel Antica Repubblica – $$

Hotel Antica Repubblica sits just off Amalfi’s main drag, down a peaceful little alley. But the main reason we love this place is the fact that it’s just so friendly! The manager, Christian, is so lovely, and the staff just can’t do enough for you. 

We also love the rooftop terrace where you can enjoy breakfast each morning. If you prefer welcoming, character-filled stays over sleek hotels, this is an excellent pick. It’s just a few minutes from the beach, cathedral, and ferry dock, so it’s very well-located on top of everything else.

Expect to pay between €250 and €315 per night for a double room here. Family suites are available too!

Ravello

Ravello is a serene hilltop town on the Amalfi Coast, and it boasts some of the best views in the region! Since it’s perched high above the sea, it’s not a beach town as such, but what it lacks in shoreline, it more than makes up for in charm. 

Unlike the busier coastal towns, Ravello feels more peaceful and romantic, so we think it’s perfect for couples, honeymooners, or anyone wanting to slow down and soak in the scenery.

Top sights include the stunning gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, both offering panoramic terraces overlooking the coastline. The latter—known as the Terrace of Infinity—offers the best views anywhere along the Amalfi Coast.

Meanwhile, you can access the beaches below the town by taxi or via a short bus ride. And if you love hiking, you can even take the scenic stairway from Ravello down to Lido di Castiglione—just head out early before it gets too warm! The town also has a long-standing musical heritage, with the Ravello Festival drawing classical music lovers from around the world each summer.

If you’re looking for postcard views, relaxed elegance, and a quieter vibe, Ravello is an excellent choice and well worth trading a beachfront location for!

• No beach access
• Requires a drive or bus to reach other towns or the coast

Hotel Graal – $$$

Hotel Graal is a longtime favorite in Ravello, and with sweeping views of the Amalfi Coast, it’s easy to see why! The hotel has a classic Italian style, with spacious rooms, modern bathrooms, and balconies overlooking the sea. There’s also a pool with panoramic sea views where you can relax and cool off in the Italian summer heat. Who needs a beachfront stay when you’ve got a pool with a view anyway?

The hotel is a short walk to the main piazza, but it’s still just far enough from the crowds to feel quiet and relaxed. For a comfortable stay with gorgeous views and a bit of traditional flair, Hotel Graal is definitely worth the splurge. Rooms here typically cost between €300 and €500 per night.

Hotel Villa Fraulo – $$

Hotel Villa Fraulo is set in a historic villa just steps from Ravello’s center, so if you’re looking for a charming and comfortable stay, this place ticks a lot of boxes. The rooms are airy and elegant, and many of them have balconies looking out over the coast. There’s also an L-shaped infinity pool and spacious terrace where you can enjoy breakfast, sunset drinks, or a moonlit dinner. 

We think that this place is ideal if you want something romantic but not too pricey. You’ll be close to all the main attractions, yet able to retreat into your own peaceful corner when needed. Bliss! Rooms here range between €315 and €450 per night.

Ravello House – $

Ravello House offers affordable, self-catering apartments right in the heart of Ravello, making it a great option for travelers who want space and flexibility. Each unit comes with a small kitchen, clean modern decor, and some even have sea views or private terraces. There’s even a hot tub and a nice garden to relax in. 

It’s not a full-service hotel, but you’ll have everything you need for a comfortable stay, especially if you prefer to cook for yourself or travel longer term. The apartments can sleep up to five people, so this is also a great choice for groups and families. Plus, you’re just a minute or two from Ravello’s main square and the famous gardens.

All in all, we think this is a fantastic budget-friendly base in this otherwise upscale town. Apartments here cost between €285 and €350 per night.

Praiano

Tucked between Positano and Amalfi, Praiano is a laid-back, charming village that offers a more peaceful and authentic experience of the Amalfi Coast. It’s ideal for travelers who want gorgeous views, a slower pace, and fewer crowds. While it doesn’t have the same buzz as Positano, that’s exactly what makes it appealing!

Although Praiano is not exactly unknown, the vibe here is definitely a bit more local with family-run restaurants, quiet corners to unwind, and staircases leading down to hidden beach coves. We think that this place is perfect for anyone looking to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the Amalfi Coast. 

There’s less glitz and glamor here, but to my mind, the trade-off is more than worth it to enjoy those jaw-dropping sea views and dramatic cliffside landscapes with fewer crowds around. And for hiking enthusiasts like us, Praiano also makes a great base for tackling the famous Path of the Gods trail. 

Getting around the coast is manageable by bus or boat, but keep in mind that transportation can be a bit trickier than in the bigger towns like Amalfi or Sorrento. Still, if you want to mostly stay in one place and relax, Praiano is perfect!

• Quieter and more affordable than Positano or Amalfi
• Beautiful views and great access to coastal hikes

Albadamare Boutique Hotel – $$$

Albadamare Boutique Hotel is a beautifully restored villa perched on the hillside with panoramic views of the sea and coastline. The vibe here is serene and elegant, with bright rooms, minimalist decor, and balconies that make it easy to slow down and soak in the scenery. 

Breakfast is served on the terrace each morning, and the staff are incredibly warm and attentive. It’s a 10-minute walk to the center of town, and about 20 minutes to the beach, so be prepared for stairs. I will say that the climb is absolutely worth it for the views!

Double rooms here typically cost around €260 per night, but can climb to €350 and above if you wait too long to book.

Hotel Costa Diva – $$

Dreaming of a scenic stay set among lemon groves and beautiful gardens? Allow me to introduce you to Hotel Costa Diva. Located on a scenic cliffside, this property offers a peaceful stay and sea views from nearly every room. It’s a family-run property with a touch of rustic charm and a cute restaurant that serves the most amazing homemade pasta and fresh seafood.

If you stay here, you’ll need to climb a few stairs to reach the main road or the beach, but the tranquility and atmosphere more than make up for it. We love this place because it really exemplifies what true Italian hospitality is all about! Rooms here usually cost €250 per night.

Hotel Holiday – $$

Hotel Holiday is a pretty hotel overlooking the gorgeous coastline. If great views are your top priority, you’ll love this place! It’s a good base if you want to be close to restaurants and local buses, but away from the noise. You’re also just a 10-minute walk from the nearest beach—win!

And the hotel’s interior is nothing to be sniffed at, either. It’s clean, airy, and spacious. In fact, its blue and white decor actually reminds me a lot of Santorini! 

There’s free parking, a complimentary breakfast, and the hotel can arrange an airport shuttle for you for an additional fee. This is a fantastic hotel and the perfect place to just enjoy the beauty and relaxed vibes of Praiano.  Rooms here cost between €325 and €375 per night during peak season.

Top Activities to do on the Amalfi Coast

With your Amalfi Coast stay sorted, it’s time to explore everything this stunning coastline has to offer—and trust us, there’s no shortage of memorable ways to do it. From sun-soaked boat days to epic hikes, ancient ruins, and homemade pasta in a farmhouse kitchen, these are the tours that truly made our trip unforgettable.

• Sail to chic Capri – Cruising to Capri and the Blue Grotto from Sorrento on this small-group boat tour was a dream. We lounged on the deck, soaked up the sun, and even swam off the boat in that impossibly blue water. Capri was beautiful, but it was the laid-back vibe and our friendly crew that made the day feel extra special.

• Hike the Path of the Gods – We explored one of the most scenic trails in Italy on this private guided hike above Positano. With jaw-dropping coastal views and a local guide sharing stories the whole way, this walk felt more like a journey than just a workout.

• Visit Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius – This full-day tour made it so easy to experience two major sights in one go. Walking through Pompeii with a knowledgeable guide added so much context, and the hike up Vesuvius rewarded us with sweeping views over Naples and the sea.

• Cruise the Amalfi Coast by boat – This small-group tour from Positano made the coast feel totally effortless. We stopped to swim in hidden coves, had free time in Amalfi, and cruised past stunning cliffs with drinks, snacks, and music on board. It felt more like a day with friends than a tour.

• Cook with locals in the hills – This hands-on cooking class and farmhouse visit was the most authentic experience of our trip. From gathering herbs in the garden to rolling out pasta dough, this tour offered a delicious and heartfelt glimpse into everyday life on the Amalfi Coast.

Renting a Car in Italy

Renting a car in Italy is one of the best ways to explore the country beyond the cities—think charming Tuscan villages, dramatic Amalfi Coast drives, and hidden gems in the countryside. Tips for Renting a Car in Italy

• Drive on the right: Italians drive on the right-hand side of the road and overtake on the left. Right turns on red are illegal, and you must often yield to vehicles coming from the right at intersections.
• Stay alert and confident: Italian driving can feel aggressive in cities—expect assertive drivers, scooters weaving through traffic, and liberal horn use (often just a form of communication). Stay calm and practice defensive driving.
