Planning a trip to Luang Prabang soon but not sure where to stay? You’re in the right place!

I visited Luang Prabang with a friend last year, and it didn’t take long for the city to win me over. I absolutely loved wandering between temples, browsing the night markets, watching the sunset over the river, and (of course), trying as much local food as possible. 

Luang Prabang isn’t a huge city, but choosing the right area to base yourself can still make a big difference to your trip. So to help you find your perfect base, I’ve put together this guide to the best areas to stay in Luang Prabang, plus my top hotel picks for every budget.

Where to Stay in Luang Prabang Map

Overview of the Best Areas to Stay in Luang Prabang

When it comes to getting around, walking is by far the easiest way to explore central Luang Prabang. Many hotels also lend or rent bicycles, which is super handy! 

Unfortunately, you won’t find the ride-hailing app, Grab, in Laos. Instead, they use LOCA. To be completely honest, we couldn’t get the hang of it, so we stuck to tuk-tuks and paid in cash instead.

Before we get into the details, here’s a quick look at the three best areas and my top hotel pick in each:

• Old Town – Best for luxury travelers & historic charm – This atmospheric neighborhood puts Luang Prabang’s temples, markets, museums, and restaurants within easy walking distance. My top pick is 3 Nagas Hotel Luang Prabang, a beautiful heritage hotel with just 15 rooms in the heart of the Old Quarter.

• Mekong Riverfront – Best for a peaceful retreat – Stay here for sunset views, riverside restaurants, and quick access to boat trips while remaining close to the Old Town. My favorite hotel here is Villa Maly Boutique Hotel, a former royal residence with tropical gardens and a gorgeous outdoor pool.

• Nam Khan Riverfront – Best for budget travelers – This leafy, quieter side of town offers excellent-value hotels within walking distance of the main sights. My top pick is Chic Stay HANA Boutique Hotel, thanks to its stylish rooms, outdoor pool, and peaceful location.

Where to Stay in Luang Prabang

Old Town

BEST FOR LUXURY TRAVELERS AND HISTORIC CHARM

Pros

• Walkable to Luang Prabang’s most famous temples, markets, and cultural sights
• Best selection of restaurants, cafes, shops, and atmospheric heritage hotels
• Ideal for first-time visitors or anyone with only a few days in the city

Cons

• Hotel prices tend to be higher than in the neighborhoods outside the historic center
• Streets near the Night Market and Sisavangvong Road can feel busy in the evening

If this is your first trip to Luang Prabang, Old Town is the easiest place to stay. It occupies the historic peninsula between the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers and places you right among the city’s temples, traditional wooden homes, French colonial buildings, cafes, and restaurants.

Many of Luang Prabang’s biggest sights are within walking distance. You can visit the Royal Palace Museum, climb Mount Phousi for sunset, browse the Night Market, and walk to Wat Xieng Thong, which is one of my favorite temples in the city. Staying here also makes it easier to experience the town early in the morning or after the day-trip crowds have started to leave.

Old Town is the liveliest of the three areas, especially around Sisavangvong Road, but “lively” is relative here. Luang Prabang still feels much calmer than most Southeast Asian cities! The biggest downside is that heritage hotels and prime locations often cost more, and you’ll hear more activity around the market streets.

I’d recommend Old Town if you love history and culture, have limited time, or want to step outside your hotel and immediately feel part of the city.

Burasari Heritage Luang Prabang – $$$

For our top luxury hotel pick in Old Town, it’s got to be Burasari Heritage Luang Prabang. The hotel occupies traditional Lao-French buildings beside the Nam Khan River, just a few minutes on foot from Wat Xieng Thong and the cafes and temples of Sakkaline Road.

The rooms here have tons of character, with dark wood, colorful textiles, and vintage-inspired details. There’s also an onsite restaurant and spa, so you can treat yourself to a massage or a relaxed meal after a busy day of sightseeing.

One thing to know is that there’s no swimming pool. However, if you care more about atmosphere, history, and a central location, I don’t think that’s a dealbreaker.

Rooms typically cost between $160–$350 USD per night. It’s definitely a splurge, but worth it for a romantic stay in one of the prettiest parts of Luang Prabang.

Another luxury option worth checking out is Villa Santi Hotel, a former royal residence on Sakkaline Road. The rooms here are so elegant, and the central location is hard to beat! 

For romance and relaxation, Victoria XiengThong Palace is another strong choice. It has leafy gardens, an on-site spa, and a fantastic location near Wat Xieng Thong.

3 Nagas Hotel Luang Prabang – $$

Next up is 3 Nagas Hotel Luang Prabang, which is my top overall pick in all of Luang Prabang. This boutique hotel only has 15 rooms available to book, so it feels a lot more intimate and personal than a larger resort.

The location is also fantastic, right on Sakkaline Road and within walking distance of Wat Xieng Thong, the Night Market, and the Royal Palace Museum. You can even borrow a bicycle if you’d like to cruise around the peninsula or use the pool, spa, and gym at the nearby Sofitel (just note that 3 Nagas doesn’t have its own pool). 

As for pricing, rooms generally cost between $120–$280 USD per night.

If you can’t get a room at 3 Nagas Hotel, Mekong Riverview Hotel is another excellent choice. It’s located in a scenic spot near the tip of the peninsula and has beautiful grounds, plus a breakfast worth getting up for.

We also love Chaluenxay Boutique Hotel & Travel, which offers comfortable rooms within easy walking distance of Wat Xieng Thong. Many rooms have balconies, and there’s also a sunny terrace and bar where you can unwind.

Luang Prabang Villa Sirikili River View – $

If you want an affordable room without giving up the charm of Old Town, it’s definitely worth checking out Luang Prabang Villa Sirikili River View. This hotel sits on the quieter Nam Khan side of the peninsula, but you’ll still be close to Wat Xieng Thong and only a short walk from the restaurants and shops along Sakkaline Road.

The rooms here are simple and comfortable, and many even have balconies or terraces overlooking the river or garden. 

Rooms are around $80 USD per night, which is fantastic value for a central stay. 

Another affordable riverside option we love is Luang Prabang Golden Lotus Villa River View. You’re guaranteed a balcony with every room, and there’s a handy airport shuttle available, too.

I also really love PHA NYA Residence, especially if you prefer smaller boutique hotels. It’s close to the Night Market and temples, with gorgeous rooms and an impressive breakfast each morning.

Mekong Riverfront

BEST FOR A PEACEFUL RETREAT

Pros

• Beautiful Mekong views and easy access to riverside restaurants and sunset cruises
• Calm atmosphere while remaining only a few blocks from Old Town’s main sights
• Convenient starting point for boat trips toward the Pak Ou Caves

Cons

• Rooms with the best river views often cost more
• Some properties are farther from the historic peninsula

If you want somewhere relaxed but don’t want to feel cut off, the Mekong Riverfront is a great choice. It’s especially lovely around sunset, when the sky changes color over the water, and everyone settles in at the riverside restaurants and bars.

You won’t necessarily sacrifice convenience, either. Choose a hotel near the historic peninsula, and you can still walk to the Night Market, Royal Palace Museum, and Old Town temples. This is also a handy place to stay if you’re planning a sunset cruise or boat trip to the Pak Ou Caves.

One thing to check carefully when booking a hotel is the property’s exact location. “Mekong Riverfront” can describe properties beside the historic peninsula as well as resorts farther out, and that can make a big difference to your walking time. Some streets are also very quiet at night, which I see as part of the charm, but it may not suit you if you want bars and restaurants immediately outside.

Overall, though, I’d recommend this area to couples or anyone who wants river views, relaxed evenings, and easy access to Luang Prabang’s main sights.

Maison Dalabua – $$$

If I were returning to Luang Prabang for a special occasion, Maison Dalabua is where I’d want to stay. The hotel is built around UNESCO-protected lily ponds, and the setting is absolutely stunning!

My friend and I couldn’t stretch our budget to a room here, but we did come for dinner twice, and I’m so glad we did. Eating beside the huge pond under the soft evening lights was magical, and the food was honestly some of the best I’ve ever had. 

Rooms usually cost between $140–$350 USD per night. It’s certainly not cheap, but the setting makes it feel like much more than somewhere to sleep.

Avani+ Luang Prabang Hotel is another luxurious option, located directly across from the Night Market. The pool and gardens are the real star of the show here, plus every room has its own private balcony. 

If you need another option, we also love Homm Souvannaphoum Luang Prabang, especially since it’s set inside the former home of a Lao prince. This hotel has everything you’d ever need for a relaxed stay in Laos, including leafy gardens, a decent-sized outdoor pool, and on-site spa facilities. 

Villa Maly Boutique Hotel – $$

Next up is Villa Maly Boutique Hotel, my top mid-range pick if you want somewhere with a bit of personality. This former royal residence is built around lush tropical gardens and a central swimming pool, so it feels like a little escape even though you’re still close to the center.

The rooms mix colonial-style furniture with traditional Lao details, and there’s an on-site restaurant and bar for evenings when you don’t feel like heading back out. 

Rates usually range from $100–$240 USD per night. This really is the sweet spot if you want a pool and boutique atmosphere, but you don’t want to stretch to the price of a luxury hotel.

If you have a little more room in your budget, Satri House Hotel is another hotel worth checking out. It has some seriously gorgeous gardens, two swimming pools, and plenty of spaces to relax away from the busier streets.

Oudomsouk Guest House is a simpler option that leaves more room in your budget for food and day trips. Best of all, you won’t need to spend much on tuk-tuks because central Luang Prabang is within walking distance.

Vieng Savanh II Hotel – $

For an affordable base near the center, you can’t go wrong with Vieng Savanh II Hotel. It’s within walking distance of the Night Market and Old Town, so you can explore most of central Luang Prabang on foot. 

The rooms are bright, comfortable, and air-conditioned, with everything you need after a long day out. You won’t find resort-style facilities here, but that won’t matter if you’d rather save your money for food, waterfalls, and day trips. Breakfast may be included with some rates, so make sure to double-check the details before booking if that’s something you want included! 

As for pricing, you can expect rooms to average around $65 USD per night.

Indigo House Hotel is another excellent-value option right by the Night Market. The central location is especially convenient for a short stay when you want to spend as little time as possible getting around.

We also love Le KhounSok Boutique Hotel for a modern, affordable room near the center. It sits on a quieter street but remains within walking distance of Old Town’s main attractions.

Nam Khan Riverfront

BEST FOR BUDGET TRAVELERS

Pros

• Quiet, leafy atmosphere with excellent-value boutique hotels and guesthouses
• Still within walking or cycling distance of central Luang Prabang
• A good choice for travelers who prefer peaceful mornings and evenings

Cons

• Fewer restaurants, cafes, and bars immediately outside your hotel
• Some properties require a 10- to 15-minute walk to reach Old Town

The Nam Khan Riverfront runs along the eastern side of Luang Prabang and feels much more residential than Old Town. It’s my top pick for budget travelers because you can often find a lovely boutique hotel or guesthouse here for less without staying too far from the main sights.

Many hotels are around a 10- to 15-minute walk from Old Town, Mount Phousi, and the Night Market. That’s pretty manageable, and borrowing or renting a bicycle makes getting around even easier. The peaceful streets are also a welcome change when you’re ready to call it a night!

The main downside is that you won’t have as many restaurants and bars right outside your hotel. There are a few local spots nearby, but you’ll probably head into Old Town for most meals and evenings out. It’s also worth checking the map before booking, as some properties are farther from the center than others.

Still, if you’re happy to walk a little farther in exchange for lower prices and a laid-back setting, the Nam Khan Riverfront is definitely worth considering.

The Jam Boutique Hotel – $$$

For a stylish stay with a few resort-style perks, the Jam Boutique Hotel is my top luxury pick in this area. The rooms feel fresh and contemporary but still include traditional design touches, while the outdoor pool and leafy courtyard are perfect when you need a break from the midday heat.

The hotel is tucked along a more peaceful street away from Old Town’s busiest stretch, but you can still walk to the Night Market and central sights. I’d recommend it to couples or anyone who wants space to relax without staying too far outside the historic center.

Rooms typically range from $80–$180 USD per night. That’s on the pricier side for this neighborhood, but still reasonable for such a polished hotel with a pool.

Elephant Boutique Hotel is another comfortable option within walking distance of the center. It’s a good one to check if The Jam is booked or you’re looking for something a little more affordable.

I can also personally recommend La Palm Garden Hotel, where my friend and I stayed during our trip. We found it peaceful and really comfortable, and the short walk into Old Town never felt like a hassle.

Chic Stay HANA Boutique Hotel – $$

For my mid-range pick, I absolutely love Chic Stay HANA Boutique Hotel. It has a lovely outdoor pool and gardens, which is exactly what you’ll want after climbing Mount Phousi or spending the day at Kuang Si Falls.

The rooms here are modern, and the calm location suits travelers who value a good night’s sleep. You won’t have the same number of restaurants and shops outside your door as you would in Old Town, but central Luang Prabang is still easy to reach on foot or by bicycle.

Rooms tend to average around $120 USD per night, making this a strong-value boutique stay with a pool.

Villa Maydou Boutique Hotel is another attractive option in restored traditional houses, with tropical gardens and an outdoor pool. It’s also in an excellent location just a 10-minute walk from the city center. 

If you need another backup, Villa Oasis is also a good shout. It has a lovely garden and outdoor pool, with the Night Market just a short walk away.

Luang Prabang Maison Vongprachan & Travel – $

If you’re watching your budget, Luang Prabang Maison Vongprachan & Travel is a friendly and practical place to stay. The rooms are simple but comfortable, and breakfast is included with most rates, so that’s one less meal to budget for.  

Location-wise, the hotel sits in a more residential part of central Luang Prabang, around a 10- to 15-minute walk from the Night Market and Old Town. The staff can also help arrange tours and local transportation, which is useful if you prefer to make plans once you arrive.

Rooms typically sit around $50 USD per night. At that price, you’ll have much more left in your budget for food, tuk-tuks, and day trips.

Meunna Boutique Hotel is another wallet-friendly option in a laid-back neighborhood. It even has an outdoor pool, which is a great bonus at this price point.

You could also try LuangPrabang Pearl Hotel for a modern stay within walking distance of the center. We love this hotel because every room has a balcony, and there’s also an airport shuttle service to make your arrival easier. 

Top Activities to Do in Luang Prabang

Once you’ve chosen where to stay, it’s time to plan what you’ll do! Luang Prabang may feel laid-back, but there are so many memorable cultural, food, and outdoor experiences nearby. Here are a few of my favorite things I did while visiting:

• Visit the Pak Ou Caves and Kuang Si Waterfalls – If you only have time for one big day trip, this full-day tour ticks off two of the area’s most famous attractions. You’ll travel to the Pak Ou Caves (known for the thousands of Buddha figures inside) and Kuang Si Falls, with a bonus village stop on the way adding another look at life outside the city.

• Try traditional rice farming – If you don’t mind getting your hands a little dirty, this half-day Living Land experience takes you through the process of growing rice before it reaches the table. It’s a fun way to spend time in the countryside, meet local farmers, and gain a whole new appreciation for one of Laos’ most important crops.

• Taste your way through Luang Prabang – You can’t visit Luang Prabang without trying the local food, and this half-day food tour with more than 15 tastings is a great place to start. You’ll sample Lao favorites such as grilled Mekong fish, sausage, and sticky rice, along with several dishes you might struggle to identify or order on your own.

• Explore the city with a local guide – Luang Prabang’s temples and heritage buildings are beautiful, but they mean much more when you understand their stories. This half-day city tour is a convenient introduction to the city’s major landmarks and definitely one to book at the start of your trip. 

• Watch the sunset from the Mekong – For one of the most relaxing evenings you can have in the city, book this sunset cruise with a hot-pot dinner. Watching the sun dip over the Mekong while dinner is served onboard feels like a real treat, and I can’t think of a better way to spend your last evening in Luang Prabang!
