Krabi is one of the most beautiful destinations in southern Thailand, with dramatic limestone cliffs and gorgeous beaches everywhere you look. But because the region is so spread out, choosing the right area can make a big difference to your trip.

We’ve traveled all over Thailand, and Krabi is somewhere we always love returning to. So whether you’re looking for a convenient base for boat trips, a romantic beach escape, or a quieter resort stay, we’re here to help! In this guide, we’ll break down the four best areas to stay in Krabi, plus our favorite hotels for every budget to help you find the perfect base.

Overview of the Best Areas to Stay in Krabi

Krabi is more spread out than many people realize, so where you stay matters more here than it does in some other beach destinations in Thailand. You’ll be fine walking around once you’re in your chosen area, but getting between different parts of Krabi usually means arranging transport, whether that’s a shared songthaew or a rented scooter. In the areas further up the coast, resorts often offer their own transportation since everything is more spread out.

The exception to this is Railay Beach, which is only accessible by boat. If you’re staying there, keep in mind that boarding a long-tail boat can sometimes mean wading through shallow water with your luggage, so pack accordingly—this isn’t the time to bring a big, heavy suitcase.

Last but not least, Krabi is a (deservedly) popular destination, so book well ahead of time if you’re visiting between November and April. This is even more important if you’re coming over Christmas and New Year, because the best beachfront hotels fill up very quickly.

• Ao Nang – Best for first-time visitors – This is our top pick for first-timers because you’ll have restaurants, beaches, and boat trips right on your doorstep. Krabi Tipa Resort is our favorite option here because it offers a peaceful resort setting just a five-minute walk from Ao Nang Beach.

• Railay Beach – Best for couples & spectacular scenery – If you want dramatic limestone cliffs and gorgeous beaches with a quieter evening vibe, Railay is hard to beat! Sand Sea Resort Railay Beach is a fantastic choice because it stretches between Railay West and East, with a beachfront pool that’s just perfect for catching the sunset.

• Krabi Town – Best for budget travelers & local culture – We recommend Krabi Town if you’re more interested in local markets and saving money than staying right by the beach. Blu Monkey Hub and Hotel is an industrial-chic, co-working-friendly property perfect for longer stays, with a great location close to the Walking Street market.

• Klong Muang / Tubkaek Beach – Best for luxury & romantic sunsets – If you’re dreaming of quiet beaches and upscale resorts, stay here! Loy Chalet offers lovely villas nestled in the jungle, just a 10-minute walk from the beach.

Where to Stay in Krabi

Ao Nang

BEST FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS

Pros

• Huge choice of restaurants, hotels, shops, and nightlife
• One of the best bases in Krabi for boat trips and island hopping

Cons

• Much busier and more touristy than Krabi’s other beach areas
• Ao Nang Beach isn’t as beautiful as Railay or Tubkaek

If it’s your first time in Krabi, we think Ao Nang is by far the easiest place to stay. It’s the region’s main tourist hub, so you’ll have a huge choice of restaurants, bars, shops, and tour operators within a fairly compact area. That makes it especially handy if you want plenty going on without needing taxis every time you leave your hotel.

Ao Nang Beach is at the heart of the action, with dramatic limestone cliffs framing the coastline and long-tail boats lined up along the shore. It’s also one of Krabi’s main departure points for trips to nearby islands and beaches, including Railay, so this is an excellent base if island hopping is high on your itinerary. Noppharat Thara Beach is also just north of town if you want a slightly quieter stretch of sand.

The downside is that Ao Nang feels very touristy, especially during high season, and we wouldn’t call its main beach Krabi’s prettiest. Now, don’t get us wrong, it’s still a beautiful tropical beach, but the bar in Krabi is incredibly high. And Ao Nang’s convenience is hard to beat, especially if you’re looking for a good mix of beach time, nightlife, and things to do.

BlueSotel SMART Krabi Aonang Beach – $$$

BlueSotel is a spacious, adults-only hotel with a huge rooftop swimming pool overlooking the Andaman Sea and Krabi’s limestone mountains. Sounds pretty scenic, right?

There’s also a rooftop bar, spa, gym, and another pool downstairs, so you’ve got plenty of places to relax between boat trips. The hotel is just a couple of minutes from Ao Nang Beach on foot, so you can easily walk down to the sand whenever you feel like it, as well as to the bars and restaurants around town. Rooms typically start from around $175 USD per night during peak season.

If BlueSotel is fully booked for your dates, Aonang Fiore Resort offers the best of both the jungle and the beach. Its hillside cottages and villas are surrounded by jungle, and you can even upgrade to a villa with a private Jacuzzi and scenic views.

We also love Aonang Phu Pi Maan Resort & Spa for a quieter escape with beautiful limestone-cliff views. It has a pool and spa, plus a free shuttle that gets you to Ao Nang Beach in around five minutes.

Krabi Tipa Resort – $$

If you want a resort feel without being far from the action, Krabi Tipa Resort is a fantastic choice in Ao Nang. It’s surrounded by lush greenery but still just a short stroll from the beach, so you get a more peaceful setting without sacrificing convenience.

The biggest draw for us is the huge infinity pool, which overlooks the ocean and comes with a swim-up bar, making it perfect for a lazy afternoon between boat trips. There’s also a large, modern gym and a spa offering traditional Thai massage treatments, as well as family-friendly facilities like a kids’ pool and playground.

In short, you’ve got everything you need right here! Rooms typically start from around $110 USD per night.

If Krabi Tipa Resort is already full, Andaman Breeze Resort is another great option if you’d prefer somewhere removed from Ao Nang’s busiest streets. It overlooks Krabi’s limestone cliffs and has a pool, while the beach and main tourist area are around a 15-minute walk away.

Alternatively, Red Ginger Chic Resort is a fun choice if you like hotels with a bit more personality. We especially like the look of the spacious pool-access rooms, where your terrace leads straight into the water!

Green View Village Resort – $

If you’re looking for an affordable tropical getaway, Green View Village Resort offers fantastic value. Instead of a basic budget hotel, you’ll be surrounded by lush gardens and dramatic limestone mountains, with individual bungalows and rooms scattered throughout the property.

The resort has an outdoor pool with an incredible cliff backdrop, plus an on-site restaurant and balconies on most room types. Ao Nang Beach is about a 15-minute walk away, but the resort also runs a shuttle, so you don’t have to choose between saving money and easy beach access.

For us, this is exactly what a good budget stay should be: simple and affordable, but still somewhere you’ll actually enjoy spending time! Rooms typically start around $75 USD per night during peak season, but they fill up fast, so don’t hang around.

If the rooms at Green View Village are already booked, Krabi Heritage Hotel is another great choice, and it’s super close to Ao Nang Beach! The service is super attentive and friendly, and there’s an outdoor pool and family-friendly restaurant on site.

We also like Aonang Silver Orchid Resort if you want a peaceful, wallet-friendly spot with gorgeous Krabi cliff views. There’s a large pool, including pool-access rooms, and the hotel runs a free shuttle to Ao Nang Beach, so you get convenience and location rolled into one! 

Railay Beach

BEST FOR COUPLES & SPECTACULAR SCENERY

Pros

• Incredible beaches surrounded by dramatic limestone cliffs
• Peaceful, car-free atmosphere that feels wonderfully secluded

Cons

• Only accessible by boat
• Hotels and restaurants are generally more expensive than in Ao Nang

If gorgeous scenery is your top priority, Railay Beach is the one to beat! Although it’s technically connected to the mainland, towering limestone cliffs cut it off from the road network, so it feels like its own tropical island. You have to get there by traditional long-tail boat, which definitely adds to the fun!

Railay West is the main beach for swimming and sunsets, while Phra Nang Cave Beach is another absolute stunner nearby. The peninsula is also famous for rock climbing, but don’t worry if scaling a cliff isn’t quite your idea of a vacation. The scenery alone is worth coming for!

One of our favorite things about staying here is the atmosphere. With no road traffic and everything within walking distance, Railay feels much more peaceful than Ao Nang, especially in the evenings once the day-trippers have left.

Of course, that seclusion comes with a few trade-offs. Everything has to arrive by boat, which makes goods more expensive, and hotels usually cost more, too. And since Railay is cut off from the rest of Krabi, exploring other areas takes extra planning. 

With that said, if you’re dreaming of relaxation rather than exploration, or a romantic beach escape, Railay is magical.

Railay Bay Resort & Spa – $$$

If you’re coming to Railay for a romantic beach escape, Railay Bay Resort & Spa is our top upscale pick. The resort stretches across the peninsula, with a prime spot directly on Railay West, so you can step straight out onto one of the most beautiful beaches in Krabi.

There are two outdoor pools, including one right by the beachfront, plus a spa and tropical gardens that make the whole place feel wonderfully secluded. We’d definitely consider upgrading to one of the more luxurious cottages or villas for a special trip, but honestly, the location is the biggest reason to stay here.

Being able to wander down to Railay West for sunset without getting on a boat is pretty hard to beat! Rooms typically start from around $275 USD per night.

If Railay Bay is fully booked for your dates, don’t worry, because Railay Village Resort & Spa is another gorgeous beachfront option on Railay West, with tropical gardens and two outdoor pools tucked between the rooms. It’s a great alternative if you want that romantic resort feel while keeping the beach literally steps away.

We also like Railay Princess Resort & Spa for its showstopping infinity pool and incredible food, plus complimentary breakfast. It sits right on Railay East Beach, next to the pier, so it’s one of the easiest resorts in the area to access.

Sand Sea Resort Railay Beach – $$

If you want to stay right on Railay West without paying top-end resort prices, Sand Sea Resort Railay Beach is our favorite option. The property stretches across the peninsula from Railay West toward the east, giving you easy access to both sides of Railay.

The beachfront setting is the real selling point for us. There are multiple outdoor pools, including one overlooking the beach and those enormous limestone cliffs, plus a mixture of rooms and villas surrounded by tropical greenery. It’s dreamy and not too pricey – what more could you want?

Rooms typically start from around $160 USD per night during peak season.

If Sand Sea Resort is fully booked, we think that Railay Phutawan Resort is perfect if you’re happy to trade direct beach access for dramatic scenery and a gorgeous infinity pool. This property feels high up in the mountains, with a free shuttle to take you down to the sand whenever you feel like it. 

We also really like Bhu Nga Thani Resort & Villas Railay for its contemporary feel and its generous breakfast buffet. The upgraded villas also come with their own private pools, which is ideal for couples! 

Avatar Railay – $

If you want somewhere stylish without blowing the budget, Avatar Railay is one of our favorite affordable options on the peninsula. It sits on Railay East, so you won’t have Railay West directly outside your door, but the peninsula is small enough that you can easily walk between the beaches.

The hotel feels surprisingly polished for the price, with contemporary rooms arranged around a lovely outdoor pool. We especially like the pool-access rooms, where you can step straight from your terrace into the water. How cool is that? You honestly get so much for your money here, and we love the tropical garden and mountain views.

Rooms typically start from around $95 USD per night during peak season.

Rapala Rock Wood Resort is a fun alternative if you prefer rustic bungalows and a bit more of a backpacker vibe – although make no mistake, this isn’t a rowdy party property! It’s surrounded by greenery on the eastern side of Railay, giving it much more of a jungle-hideaway feel than the larger resorts.

Finally, Railay Garden View Resort is ideal if seclusion and scenery matter more than luxury facilities. Its traditional wooden bungalows sit on a leafy hillside overlooking the water, so you get a remote setting for a budget-friendly price.

Krabi Town 

BEST FOR BUDGET TRAVELERS & LOCAL CULTURE

Pros

• Some of the cheapest food and accommodation in Krabi
• Great local markets and restaurants 
• More authentic atmosphere

Cons

• No swimmable beach in town
• You’ll need transportation to visit Ao Nang and Railay

If you’re traveling on a budget or want to see a more local side of Krabi, we think Krabi Town is definitely worth considering. It’s the provincial capital, set along the Krabi River rather than the coast, so it’s a working Thai town rather than a beach resort. It’s also closer to the airport than the other areas on this list, so we just stayed here for a night before catching our flight in the morning.

Food is a huge part of the appeal here. Maharaj Market is packed with fresh produce and local eats, and we had the best time grazing on street food and checking out handicrafts at the weekend Walking Street. 

Other than eating and drinking, there are a couple of cool cultural attractions in town. It’s worth wandering along the riverfront to see the famous Black Crab sculpture and views of the Khao Khanab Nam limestone hills. You’ve also got Krabi’s most important Buddhist temple, Wat Kaew Korawaram, right in town.

The obvious downside is the lack of a beach. Ao Nang is roughly 25-30 minutes away by road, and if you want to visit Railay, it’s a 30-minute long-tail boat ride from the local pier. So no, this is not the area to stay in if you want to wake up on the beach, but for fantastic food and a more authentic slice of Krabi, we think it makes a great base, especially the night before an early flight!

Blu Monkey Hub and Hotel – $$

If you want somewhere modern with a bit of personality, Blu Monkey Hub and Hotel is our favorite option in Krabi Town. This place is designed with digital nomads in mind, with a free 24-hour coworking space on site and industrial-chic decor that will appeal to a young professional crowd.

There’s also an outdoor pool and a gym, plus laundry facilities and free coffee and snacks in the lobby, which is always a quick way to win us over! However, what really sells it for us is the location. Krabi Walking Street is quite literally around the corner, and Wat Kaew Korawaram is within walking distance.

In short, you’re perfectly positioned to enjoy the best of Krabi Town. Rooms typically start from around $70 USD per night, including breakfast.

If you prefer vacation vibes over coworking spaces, Krabi SeaBass Hotel is a great alternative. It’s a sleek hotel with a lovely pool and sun terrace, plus spacious rooms and a cute cafe on site serving Thai tea.

We also like Family Tree Hotel if you’d prefer something smaller and more intimate. It’s just a short walk from Wat Kaew Korawaram, so it’s a convenient base for exploring Krabi, and we like its tropical, boutique decor.

The Brown Hotel – $

If you’re looking for somewhere affordable right in the heart of Krabi Town, The Brown Hotel is a fantastic budget pick. It’s super central, close to the town’s restaurants and markets, so it’s perfect if you don’t want to rent a scooter or car while you’re here.

The rooms are simple, but they still feel polished, with warm wooden details and modern bathrooms. Some options even offer private balconies overlooking the city, so you can kick back there and watch the action below. We think this is exactly the kind of budget hotel that makes Krabi Town such an appealing alternative to the pricier beach areas.

You can save on accommodation without feeling like you’ve compromised too much on comfort! Rooms typically start from around $60 USD per night, and the airport is just a 15- to 20-minute drive away, depending on traffic.

If The Brown Hotel is fully booked for your dates, Into The Town Krabi is an even more affordable alternative in a central location! It’s a minimalist hotel with clean, contemporary rooms, and the river and markets are just a 5-minute walk away.

Another great option is the River Front Krabi Hotel, which we like because it offers a bit more of a resort feel while remaining wallet-friendly. There’s a large outdoor pool and a bar serving tropical cocktails – who needs the beach?

Klong Muang / Tubkaek Beach

BEST FOR LUXURY & ROMANTIC SUNSETS

Pros

• Peaceful beaches with gorgeous sunset and island views
• Excellent choice of upscale beachfront resorts and spas

Cons

• Much quieter, with limited nightlife and fewer independent restaurants
• You’ll often rely on taxis or resort transportation

If you want a quiet beach escape and don’t mind being a little removed from the action, we think Klong Muang and Tubkaek Beach are gorgeous places to stay. Both sit north of Ao Nang, so you’re away from the busiest tourist crowds and surrounded by some of Krabi’s most luxurious resorts.

The beaches are the main reason to stay here, and they’re spectacular. They’re much quieter than Ao Nang, with pale golden sand and beautiful views across the Andaman Sea towards the offshore islands. This is also one of our favorite parts of Krabi for sunset, so if romantic evenings on the beach are high on your wish list, you’ll be very happy here!

But it doesn’t have to be all about relaxation – there’s still plenty to do if you get restless! Boat trips to the Hong Islands are easy to arrange from this part of the coast, while the trail up Dragon Crest Mountain is nearby if you fancy swapping the sun lounger for a scenic hike.

The downside is convenience. You won’t find nearly as many restaurants, shops, or bars as in Ao Nang, and you’ll probably rely on taxis or your hotel for transportation. But if you mostly plan to sunbathe and enjoy spa treatments at your resort, that really shouldn’t be a problem.

Dusit Thani Krabi – $$$

If you plan to check into a gorgeous beachfront resort and barely leave, Dusit Thani Krabi fits the bill exactly! It sits directly on Klong Muang Beach, surrounded by beautiful gardens, so it’s a true tropical escape.

There are two beachfront pools, but we would probably spend most of our time at the infinity pool with its swim-up bar. Cocktails without getting out of the water? Sold! There’s also a beautiful spa and several restaurants and bars, including a beach bar that’s perfectly positioned for sunset.

With daily yoga classes, tennis courts, a games room, and evening entertainment, there’s plenty to keep you busy without leaving the property. Rooms typically start from around $500 USD per night during peak season.

If Dusit Thani Krabi is fully booked for your travel dates, Nakamanda Resort and Spa is a beautiful and intimate beachfront resort made up of private Thai-style villas. Its hillside design gives many villas elevated views towards the Hong Islands and the sunset, so this would be a dreamy honeymoon pick!

Alternatively, VARANA Krabi is ideal if your idea of luxury includes a full wellness reset. There’s a 50-meter Olympic pool, Muay Thai and fitness classes, an onsen, sauna, hydrotherapy circuit, and even an on-site PADI diving school, so you certainly won’t be bored here!

Loy Chalet – $$

If you want the peace of Klong Muang without paying five-star resort prices, Loy Chalet is our favorite option. It’s tucked among tropical greenery and sits less than a kilometer from Klong Muang Beach, so it feels like it’s hidden in the jungle when, in reality, the beach is close by! 

The hotel offers spacious villas that feel clean and modern, with a few nods to Thai architecture that add extra character. They all have large living areas to relax in, and some of them even have gorgeous outdoor bathrooms with standalone tubs!

We think you get a lot of bang for your buck here, and it’s a nice, happy medium if you want resort vibes without committing to luxury-resort prices. Rooms typically start from around $200 USD per night during peak season.

If Loy Chalet is fully booked for your dates, Amari Vogue Krabi is a gorgeous option, positioned directly on Tubkaek Beach. It boasts beautiful Thai architecture, plus three pools and a spa, and Dragon Crest Mountain is practically next door, so you can go from hiking to beach cocktails in the same afternoon.

We also like The Elements Krabi Resort for a peaceful resort stay surrounded by tropical gardens. The big turquoise pool is the centerpiece, but there’s also a spa and gym if you can drag yourself away from your sun lounger.

Da-Kanda Boutique – $

For a more rustic stay surrounded by nature, Da-Kanda Boutique is a lovely budget option. The property is surrounded by greenery and feels quiet and laid-back, with plenty of space to spread out and unwind after a day of exploring.

The rooms are simple and spacious, and the kind, welcoming owners are a big part of what makes this place so appealing. There’s also a saltwater pool and lots of outdoor space, so it works really well as a peaceful base rather than somewhere you need to spend all day.

We think it’s especially well suited to travelers renting a scooter, as you’ll have the freedom to explore the beaches and surrounding area during the day, then come back somewhere calm and comfortable in the evening. Rooms typically start from around $55 USD per night.

If you want to be right next to the sea, Bliss Resort Krabi is a brilliant and affordable alternative directly on Klong Muang Beach. In fact, you can even eat breakfast right on the sand! 

Alternatively, Koh Kwang Seaview is another wallet-friendly beachfront stay with a fantastic location. The rooms are simple and colorful, but some have sea views, and you can walk straight outside onto Klong Muang Beach and to the beach bars and restaurants nearby. 

Top Activities in Krabi

Now that you’ve picked where to stay in Krabi, it’s time to plan the fun stuff! Between the dreamy islands, limestone cliffs, hidden lagoons, and lush jungle, there’s so much more to Krabi than lounging on the beach. We’ve explored quite a bit here, and these are a few of our favorite experiences to add to your itinerary:

• Go on a sunset snorkeling cruise – This sunset cruise was one of my favorite experiences in Krabi! You’ll spend the afternoon cruising between four islands on a traditional wooden junk boat, with plenty of time to snorkel, kayak, paddleboard, and relax on deck. After watching an incredible Andaman Sea sunset over a Thai buffet dinner, you’ll finish the night swimming with glowing bioluminescent plankton!

• Explore the Phi Phi Islands – Want to see some of Thailand’s most famous beaches? This full-day Phi Phi Islands tour gets an early start so you can visit Maya Bay before the biggest crowds arrive. You’ll also swim in gorgeous Pileh Bay, spot monkeys at Monkey Beach, snorkel in turquoise water, and relax on Bamboo Island after a tasty Thai lunch.

• Kayak through Krabi’s mangroves – For a completely different side of Krabi, we loved this half-day kayaking tour through peaceful mangrove forests, jungle canyons, and towering limestone cliffs. The small group size makes the experience feel extra relaxed, and you can keep an eye out for monkeys, colorful crabs, and birds along the way.

• Learn how to cook Thai food – If you love Thai food as much as I do, this Thai cooking class is a must! You’ll learn how to prepare several classic dishes using fresh local ingredients before sitting down to enjoy everything you’ve made. I cooked Pad Thai, Tom Yum Soup, and Green Curry, and getting a recipe book to take home means you can recreate your favorites long after your trip!

• Explore Krabi’s jungle – Trade the beach for the rainforest on this full-day jungle tour to some of Krabi’s most beautiful inland sights. You’ll soak at the Hot Spring Waterfall, cool off in the gorgeous Emerald Pool, and finish at Tiger Cave Temple. If you’re up for the climb, the long staircase to the summit rewards you with amazing views across Krabi!
