How to Spend TWO WEEKS on Australia’s East Coast: 2-WEEK Itinerary 

Looking for the perfect two-week East Coast Australia itinerary? You’re in the right place!

Between us, we’ve done plenty of road trips and van life around the country, so we know just how epic this stretch of coastline can be. This route takes you from Sydney all the way up to Cairns, stopping at some of our favorite places along the way, including Byron Bay, the Whitsundays, and the Great Barrier Reef.

And this isn’t just a route we’ve just pieced together on a map! It’s based on all of the road trips we’ve done ourselves over the years, tweaked and fine-tuned to create what we think is the ultimate East Coast adventure. Let’s get into it!

Itinerary Overview

This itinerary stretches just over two weeks, starting in Sydney and finishing all the way up in Cairns. You can always add extra time in Sydney at the beginning if you have it, but once you hit the road, expect a couple of full-on driving days. In total, you’ll cover around 2,700 kilometers (1,680 miles), which works out to roughly 30 hours behind the wheel.

We’ve road-tripped Australia in pretty much every way possible, from standard rental cars to campervans and full-size RVs, so we’d like to think that we’ve got a good feel for what works best! The easiest option is to rent a car through Discover Cars and stay in hotels along the way, but we’ve also done plenty of campervan travel. As for accommodation, we’ve included both hotel and holiday park options throughout the itinerary. Free camping is often limited in and around cities, but if your RV is set up for it, you can sometimes use rest areas and selected national parks to camp in. However, speaking from our own experience, it’s still useful to stop at a holiday park every few days to dump the tanks and recharge batteries before carrying on.

Here’s a quick look at the main stops we’ll be hitting along the way:

• Sydney – Take at least one day to get to know the city and see the iconic opera house before picking up your rental vehicle, ready to hit the road! 

• Byron Bay – You can’t miss this iconic Aussie beach town, or the chance to visit its magical waterfalls and see the glowworms.

• Noosa – Here, we’ll take some time to enjoy the beautiful beaches and take a day trip to Fraser Island. 

• Airlie Beach – This laid-back coastal town is the perfect base for exploring the world-famous Whitsundays.

• Cairns – Finish your East Coast adventure in tropical North Queensland with the biggest Aussie bucket-list experience of them all: snorkeling or diving at the Great Barrier Reef!

Day 1 – Sydney

We’re kicking off day 1 of our itinerary in Australia’s oldest and largest city – Sydney! It’s no surprise many people mistake it for the country’s capital, although that’s actually Canberra.

We love Sydney and have even spent time living here! There’s so much to see and do, but we’ve condensed the highlights into one day to make this itinerary as efficient as possible. It covers everything from the Sydney Tower to the Blue Mountains, and includes plenty of our favorite food and drink spots.

Breakfast – Brew Cafe

Brew Cafe is a cozy, modern spot tucked away in Circular Quay. In true Sydney style, the menu here is all about elevated versions of breakfast classics, from Benedict bacon waffles to avocado toast. And trust us, the smooth Aussie coffee will definitely hit the spot!

It opens at 7 am, and it’s a 17-minute walk or a quick 6-minute drive to the Sydney Opera House from here, which is where your morning tour kicks off. That gives you plenty of time to grab a bite and get caffeinated before heading out to explore one of the city’s most iconic landmarks! 

Just note that it’s closed on Sundays, so you’ll need to find somewhere else if that’s how your first day in Sydney falls. Diggy’s Doo’s Coffee is nearby and opens at 8:30 am on weekends, so it’s a great spot for a quick toastie or a slice of banana bread.

Morning – Tour the Sydney Opera House 

You’d be hard-pressed to name a building more famous than the Sydney Opera House, so naturally, taking a tour is a must while you’re here! We love this guided walking tour because it offers a rare opportunity to take a peek behind the scenes at areas that are normally closed off to the public! 

There are multiple departure times for this tour, but we recommend scheduling the 9:45 am option. Also, book well in advance to ensure that this time slot is still available, as this is a very popular activity!

I was so excited the first time I saw the Sydney Opera House, and I couldn’t wait to get inside! This is one of the best Sydney Opera House tours and such a great way to dive deep into the heart of Sydney’s culture and gain a deeper appreciation for the building’s unique architectural style. It has over 4,000 glowing reviews, so clearly I’m not the only one who thinks so!

Late Morning – Royal Botanic Gardens and Mrs Macquarie’s Chair 

Once you’ve explored the beautiful Opera House, it’s time to head to Sydney’s most famous viewpoint: Mrs Macquarie’s Chair! Or, if the 9:45 am time slot isn’t available, you can always head to the viewpoint first and head to the Opera House afterward. 

Either way, you can reach Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair by strolling through the Royal Botanic Gardens, which are free to enter and definitely worth seeing. This is the oldest botanical garden in Australia, and we always enjoy walking through it on a sunny day. 

Then, before long, you’ll reach Mrs Macquarie’s Chair. This is an iconic viewpoint with amazing views of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, and it’s totally free to visit. The chair itself was carved out by convicts for Elizabeth Macquarie, the wife of the Governor of New South Wales at the time, who used to love coming to this beautiful vantage point. When you see the views from here, you’ll understand why she was so enamored with it!

It takes about 20 minutes to walk from the Opera House to Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, but I recommend giving yourself at least a full hour to stroll through the gardens at your own pace and take in the views. Then, it’s about a 20-minute walk down to Circular Quay where our lunch cruise departs.

Lunch – Sydney Harbour Lunch Cruise

There’s no better way to see Sydney than from the water, and this Sydney Harbour lunch cruise totally proves that! It departs at 12 pm from Circular Quay, so you’ve got plenty of time to stroll through the Botanic Gardens beforehand and still get back to the meeting point with time to spare. It wraps up at 2:15 pm, so it won’t eat up your whole afternoon, either.

We love this cruise because not only is it a very relaxing way to sightsee, but it’s also very efficient. Once you’re on board, all you need to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy front-row views of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Highlights were sailing past the Sydney Opera House, under the Harbour Bridge, and we even discovered tucked-away beaches and sandstone cliffs along the way! 

Our guide, Ron, was an absolute gem. His commentary was both informative and full of personality, and he was more than happy to answer questions as we cruised along.

The buffet lunch exceeded our expectations, too. It was fresh and filling, with lots of yummy options – including dessert! After we ate, we found a sunny spot on the upper deck, snapped a few photos, and just soaked up the harbor breeze.

Afternoon – Bondi Beach 

After your harbour lunch cruise, it’s time to swap city sights for beach vibes! Bondi Beach is one of Sydney’s most iconic spots, so you can’t miss the chance to kick back on its famous sands while you’re here, or even try your hand at surfing! 

Bondi Beach is about a 20-minute drive from Circular Quay, or you can hop on a train and bus combo that takes around 45 minutes. Get a train from Circular Quay Station to Bondi Junction, and then it’s a quick bus ride to Campbell Parade.

If you’re up for something active, don’t miss the Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk. This scenic clifftop trail is a real favorite of ours. It’s a fairly easy walk that stretches just under 2.5 km (1.5 miles) each way, and it offers epic ocean views and pretty rock pools along the way. 

Or for those who really want to dive in, Bondi is one of the best places in the world to learn how to surf! This small-group surf lesson is beginner-friendly and includes everything you need: a board, a wetsuit, and a patient instructor to show you the ropes. It’s fun, approachable, and a great way to experience Sydney’s surf culture firsthand. Even if you wipe out (which you will), you’ll have a blast doing it! 

Dinner – Lana

Head back to your hotel to rinse off the sand and sunscreen, and then head to Circular Quay when you’re ready! One of the reasons we love coming to this area for dinner is the number of dining options. Whether you’re craving dumplings, French, tacos, or Italian, you can find it here!

We recommend heading to Lana for dinner. It’s a cozy, unpretentious spot in the heart of the quay. They offer an incredible set menu, which is great for two people and offers a variety of dishes, perfectly paired. The smoked wagyu was full of flavor, and the tuna crudo was melt-in-your-mouth good. Finish it off with dessert, and it made for one memorable way to start the trip!

Reservations are a good idea, as this place isn’t huge. It opens at 5 pm, so any time after that should work well!

Drinks – Opera Bar 

Opera Bar is a classic Sydney spot, and I can’t think of a better way to wind down your first day here! It’s tucked below the Opera House and offers unbeatable harbor views, so having a drink here is basically a Sydney rite of passage! It’s got a casual, open-air setup that makes it ideal for soaking up the atmosphere and incredible views with a drink in hand. Cheers! 

Where to Stay in Sydney (one night) 

Luxury – $$$

A stay at the Four Seasons Hotel Sydney will definitely kick off your East Coast road trip on a high note, what with its incredible views of Sydney Harbour and the iconic Opera House. The hotel is located within the historic Rocks neighborhood, which is part of the city center and close to all of the good stuff, and it has all of the comfort and amenities that you’d expect from a Four Seasons property.

Mid-range – $$ 

Meriton Suites Kent Street are luxurious, modern apartments right in the heart of Sydney, close to lots of parks and Town Hall Station. Best of all, there’s an indoor swimming pool and hot tub on site – perfect for a little pre-road trip relaxation!

Budget – $ 

Sydney Harbour YHA is a top-rated hostel in the Rocks, and its rooftop terrace offers amazing views of the harbor. Staying here puts you within walking distance of all the major sights, and there are both private rooms and shared dorms available.

Day 2 – Sydney to Port Macquarie

Morning – Get ready to hit the road

Today’s the day we properly start the road trip! Use the morning to get yourself organized before picking up your rental.

We always stock up on snacks and supplies before we hit the road – Tim Tams are non-negotiable! Then, check out of your hotel and make your way to the rental depot. If you’re traveling by campervan or RV, it’s also worth doing a bigger grocery shop now so you’ve got the basics covered for the first few days.

Be sure to give yourself a bit of breathing room this morning rather than trying to cram in more sightseeing. Sometimes, vehicle pickup can take a while if the depot is busy. There’s always paperwork to get through and bags to load, and we always like to take a little time to get familiar with our new vehicle before we hit the highway. 

Mid-day – Pick up rental car, campervan, or RV

It’s time to pick up your wheels! We’ve road-tripped Australia in campervans and motorhomes, as well as regular rental cars, and there are pros and cons to each depending on how you like to travel.

Personally, we’re big fans of JUCY campervans for this kind of trip. They give you the freedom to camp along the way, but they’re smaller and easier to drive than a full-size motorhome. You’ll still have plenty of room for your stuff and basic cooking facilities, and they tend to be a bit cheaper, too. If you want a bit more space and comfort, it’s worth checking out Star RV motorhomes instead. You’ll have a bigger living area and a much better setup for cooking, plus having your own bathroom is pretty nice on a two-week road trip! Both JUCY and Star RV have pickup locations near Sydney Airport, roughly a 15 to 20-minute drive from central Sydney when traffic is behaving. Give yourself around 1 to 2 hours to get there, complete the paperwork and vehicle checks, learn how everything works, and get packed up before you hit the road.

Or, if camping isn’t your thing, no worries! You can rent a regular car through Discover Cars and stay in the hotels we recommend along the route instead. Either way, once you’ve got the keys, the East Coast road trip officially begins!

Afternoon – Drive to Port Macquarie

Our first big stop on this road trip is Byron Bay, but it’s around eight hours from Sydney without stops, which is a LOT to tackle in one go! You could always spend the rest of today exploring Sydney and make the full drive tomorrow, but we much prefer breaking up the journey in Port Macquarie.

It takes around 4.5 hours to drive there from Sydney, which feels much more manageable when you’ve already spent part of the day picking up your rental and getting everything sorted. Plus, if you’re not used to driving a campervan or RV, you probably don’t want your first journey to be eight hours long!

If you’ve got time to spare, Newcastle and Port Stephens are two of our favorite places to stop along the way. Otherwise, we’d head straight for Port Macquarie to get checked in, and save your energy for tomorrow. This is a road trip, after all, so there’s no prize for getting to Byron Bay as quickly as possible!

Evening – Port Macquarie 

Once you arrive in Port Macquarie, get checked into your hotel or campsite and settle in for the night. After 4.5 hours on the road, you don’t need to plan an ambitious afternoon of sightseeing.

With that said, if you make good time from Sydney, our favorite thing to do here is visit the Guulabaa Place of Koala, a koala conservation and breeding center just outside Port Macquarie. This part of Australia is home to a significant koala population, so it’s a fantastic place to learn more about these adorable little guys and hopefully see a few up close. It closes at 4 pm, so if you’re keen to visit, try to leave Sydney by mid-morning.

If you’re too late for the koalas but still have some daylight left, it’s worth heading out for a quick look around Port Macquarie. You could stretch your legs along the waterfront and check out the colorful rocks along the Breakwall, or head to Town Beach for some fresh air after being cooped up in the car.

Don’t worry about squeezing too much in, though. Port Macquarie is mainly here to break up the journey to Byron Bay, and we’ve got another few hours of driving ahead of us tomorrow! It’s best to get a fairly early night so that you’re well-rested for tomorrow.

Where to Stay in Port Macquarie 

Luxury – $$$

Northpoint Apartments are upscale and modern self-contained apartments right in the center of Port Macquarie, within walking distance of the waterfront and Town Beach. The units have balconies so you’ll get views over the town, and there’s an outdoor pool to cool off in during the summer months, which you might appreciate after a long drive! 

Mid-range – $$

Rydges Hotel Port Macquarie is a gorgeous and super central hotel within walking distance of the beach and all of the best restaurants. We love the rooftop pool and the spacious, modern rooms.

Budget – $

Comfort Resort Waters Edge is a more wallet-friendly choice, but it’s no slouch, with a central location, an outdoor pool, and two dining options on site. The rooms here are simple, but comfortable and airy with views of the water. 

Holiday Park

If you’re traveling by campervan or RV, NRMA Port Macquarie Breakwall Holiday Park is our pick for tonight, with powered sites right by the water and facilities to get you recharged and ready for the road. The location is fantastic too, as you’re right by Town Beach and the colorful Breakwall, but still within walking distance of central Port Macquarie.

Day 3 – Drive to Byron Bay

Good morning from Port Macquarie! We’ve got another driving day ahead of us, so grab some breakfast and coffee before heading out to Byron Bay.

It’s around a 4-hour drive, but there are a couple of fun places to break up the journey today. Coffs Harbour is roughly halfway, so we usually stop here for coffee and a walk along the beach – and if it’s your first visit, don’t forget to take a photo with the iconic Big Banana!

We also really like Yamba, a coastal town that’s another 1.5 hours along the road from Coffs Harbour. Stopping here requires a bit of a detour from the highway, but we think it’s worth it if you’re not in a rush. 

However, don’t hang around for too long, because you’ll want to maximize your time in Byron Bay! Aim to arrive by mid-afternoon to give yourself plenty of time to check in to your hotel or campsite and get your bearings in one of Australia’s most famous beach towns. After all, it’s famous for a reason! 

Afternoon – Check out Byron Bay 

After you check in at your hotel or holiday park, you’ll have the rest of the day to explore Byron Bay! After this morning’s drive, just take things at your own pace and do what you feel like, rather than trying to cram in lots of sightseeing. Here are a couple of ideas to give you some inspiration.

Relax on the beach 

After a long drive, nothing beats kicking back and enjoying the beach! Despite its surfer reputation, Byron Bay has lots of spots with nice, calm waves that are perfect for swimming. Wategos Beach, Clarkes Beach, and Tallow Beach are all great choices!

I love these spots because they’re quieter than the main beaches, so you can spread out a towel and read a book. They don’t feel crowded at all, so it’s a nice way to embrace the relaxed pace of life in Byron Bay.

Check out Byron Bay’s breweries and distilleries 

Byron Bay has a very impressive craft drinks scene, so if you fancy a bevy or two after the drive here, this afternoon is the perfect opportunity. You can just pick one or two spots from the list and visit them at your own pace. This is Byron Bay, after all, and there’s no need to rush.

The obvious starting point is Stone & Wood, which is Byron’s most iconic brewery. In fact, it’s one of the most famous craft breweries in Australia! We love the beer here, but if you’re more of a spirits person, Lord Byron Distillery is just a short walk away in the same industrial estate. This is a family-owned, zero-waste distillery that uses 100% renewable energy and sources its ingredients locally, including water straight from the family farm. 

For something a little further afield, we definitely think that Common People Brewing is worth the 15-minute drive to the nearby village of Bangalow. This award-winning brewery has a beautiful taproom, with comfy couches, an outdoor deck, and plenty of board games. They always have 15 of their own beers on tap, too, and we love the wood-fired pizzas here.

Dinner – The Balcony Bar & Oyster Co

However you spend this afternoon, head to The Balcony Bar & Oyster Co for dinner – perhaps with a pit stop back at your hotel for a shower if you’ve been on the beach. 

As the name suggests, this restaurant focuses on fresh seafood, from oysters to grilled fish. However, there are also plenty of other options if you’re not in the mood for that! In true Byron Bay style, this place is stylish without trying too hard, and the food here is so delicious.

We love the oyster chowder and the miso-glazed eggplant, but the Byron Bay burrata is always a winner if you feel like sharing something. They also offer great cocktails, so you can stay here for a drink or two after dinner – cheers!

Where to Stay in Byron Bay (three nights)

We’re in Byron Bay for three nights, so we recommend choosing a central hotel to save travel time. With that in mind, we’ve chosen three hotels that will allow you to get around Byron Bay on foot as much as possible! 

Luxury – $$$

Hotel Marvell Byron Bay is a chic hotel with touches of the Bay’s signature boho charm, and it boasts a rooftop pool and terrace with lovely views of the area. It’s super central, too, so staying here puts you just a short walk from most of the cafes and restaurants we’ll visit here!

Mid-range – $$ 

Waves Byron Bay is just steps from Main Beach, and the spacious suites and penthouses make a plush and comfortable base for the next few nights. They also provide complimentary beach chairs and boogie boards, and free parking is included, which is ideal when you’re road tripping. 

Budget – $ 

Wollongbar Motel is an ideal budget-friendly base in Byron Bay, with a saltwater swimming pool on site, plus a barbecue area and free parking. Location-wise, it’s close to the beach and all that the town has to offer, so we think it’s a really smart choice for travelers on a budget!

Holiday Park 

Reflections Holiday Park is a great place to set up camp, with powered sites and plenty of handy facilities for a comfortable stay. It’s also in a gorgeous spot close to the water, so you can enjoy the scenery while giving yourself and your vehicle a chance to recharge!

Day 4 – Byron Bay

Breakfast – Bayleaf Cafe 

The Bayleaf Cafe is one of Byron Bay’s quintessential hip coffee spots, so head here for breakfast this morning. We think that their avocado toast is the best in town, and their drink specials are always worth trying. Plus, this place is just an 8-minute drive from the walking track, so if you aim to get here at 8 am, you should be at the track by 9 am!

Morning – Cape Byron Walking Track

The Cape Byron Walking Track is a beautiful way to ease into your first morning in Byron Bay. It’s only a quick 10-minute drive from downtown, and once you arrive, you’ll be greeted with coastal views right from the start. This is the easternmost point in Australia, so it’s a real must-do on an East Coast road trip! 

The loop takes about two hours at a relaxed pace, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the cliffs, beaches, and lighthouse viewpoints along the way. It’s an easy walk, so go slow and take the time to soak it all in. We’re sure you’ll want to snap lots of photos as you make your way around.

Lunch – Slice Pizzeria Byron Bay 

Slice Pizzeria is an easy and tasty stop after your morning on the Cape Byron Walking Track. It’s only about a 10-minute drive from the lighthouse area, so you can head straight here once you’ve finished the walk. It’s a casual spot, so it’s an ideal place to refuel with some quick comfort food. The slices are generous, and the toppings are always fresh!

If you have extra time after lunch, take a wander through downtown Byron Bay. The area has a fun, boho feel with plenty of little boutiques and surf shops to poke around in before continuing your day.

Afternoon – Stand Up Paddleboard in Cape Byron Marine Park 

This stand-up paddleboarding tour is a very peaceful way to experience the Brunswick River. The exact start time is set when you book, since the tour runs with the tides, and the operator is a small local business, so you may need to swap this activity around with this morning’s walk. 

You’ll meet in Brunswick Heads, about a 20-minute drive north of Byron Bay. Once you arrive, the tour begins with a short SUP lesson on land, which is ideal if you’re new to stand-up paddleboarding. From there, you’ll step onto the river and start gliding through the calm water of Cape Byron Marine Park. You’ll go at a pretty relaxed pace, so you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the scenery and feel completely immersed in nature.

One thing we like about this tour is that group sizes are capped at eight people, so the guide can point out wildlife and help you feel confident on the board. But to be honest, since the water is calm, you shouldn’t have any problems staying upright. This is such a lovely way to experience the Brunswick River, and you’ll even be sent some free digital photos afterward, so you don’t need to worry about trying to snap pictures yourself!

Sunset – Main Beach

Catching sunset at Main Beach is one of the best ways to wrap up your first day in Byron Bay. The sun drops behind the lush hinterland here, and it just looks incredible. However, this is a very popular sunset spot, so we definitely recommend double-checking the sunset time in advance and arriving early to snag a good spot!

And if you have extra time in your schedule, we definitely recommend using it to enjoy Main Beach. It’s such a gorgeous beach and a classic Byron Bay hangout spot.

Dinner – The Mez Club

The Mez Club is a great spot for dinner after your relaxed evening at Main Beach. It’s only an 8-minute walk from the sand, so you can head over without needing to jump in the car. The restaurant has a stylish, Mediterranean feel, with a laid-back vibe and elegant decor. 

We love the menu here because it mixes fresh, modern dishes with plenty of sharing plates. It’s a great place to try a few different things, and we definitely recommend the confit potatoes! Reservations are a good idea, especially in busier months, so check the sunset time and book for roughly 45 minutes later.

Day 5  – Byron Bay

Breakfast – The Top Shop

We’ve got a busy morning ahead, so start with breakfast at The Top Shop, a super popular little cafe. It’s housed in an old 1950s milk bar, so it’s a slice of Byron Bay heritage, and it’s got that laid-back feel the town is so famous for. And as you’d expect, it’s got Insta-worthy açaí bowls and smoothies alongside great coffee and a few heartier options – halloumi rolls, anyone?

It opens nice and early at 6:30 am, so you’ll have plenty of time to eat without rushing. From here, it’s only around a 10-minute walk or 3-minute drive to the meeting point for this morning’s tour, so it’s also a very convenient place to fuel up before you head out. 

Morning – Sea kayak and dolphin spotting adventure 

This sea kayaking tour is one of our favorite ways to experience Byron Bay’s coastline, not least because there’s a good chance of spotting dolphins, sea turtles, and humpback whales! 

The tour departs at 9:30 am, but you’ll want to arrive about 20 minutes early to check in and get set up with your gear. You’ll be back at the meeting point around 12:30 pm, which gives you the whole afternoon to relax or explore more of the town.

The adventure starts at Clarkes Beach, where the guides give you a quick lesson on steering your tandem kayak. From there, you’ll paddle out into the Pacific and follow the curve of the bay, taking in some of Byron’s most iconic landmarks from the water. You’ll cruise past the Cape Byron Lighthouse, glide alongside scenic Wategos Beach, and get a close look at Julian Rocks. 

This is a beautiful stretch of coastline, but for us, the wildlife is the most exciting part of this tour. Did you know that Byron Bay is home to three different species of sea turtles? Your guide will help keep an eye out for them as you paddle and help you identify the different variations. The resident dolphin population has also been known to swim right alongside the kayaks, which is a bucket list experience if you ask us!

Lunch – Little Byronian 

After your morning sea kayaking adventure, Little Byronian is the perfect spot to refuel. It’s just a short drive or a 15-minute walk from the end of the tour, so it’s a convenient place to stop – plus, the food is really good! They serve pita pockets, and the menu is small, but everything is freshly made. The chicken schnitzel filling is my favorite, but they’ve also got lots of pastries if you’re in the mood for something sweet. 

Afternoon – Your Choice! 

You’ve got about three hours of downtime this afternoon, so it’s the perfect chance to take a breather before tonight’s tour. If this morning’s kayak adventure has left you feeling tired, you can always head back to your hotel or campsite for a rest.

If you’re still full of energy, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the coast. Tallow Beach and Belongil Beach are just outside downtown and offer a quieter vibe, though do note that clothing is optional on the north end of Belongil. If that’s not for you, Main Beach, Byron Beach, and Clarkes Beach are all within easy reach and perfect for a quick swim!

Alternatively, you can spend this time wandering through the heart of Byron Bay. The town is full of little boutiques and artisanal shops, so if you enjoy shopping, it’s worth taking some time to browse at your own pace and enjoy Byron’s famously boho atmosphere.

Evening – See glow-worms and waterfalls in the rainforest

The Gondwana Rainforests around Byron Bay are absolutely magical, so you just can’t pass up the chance to explore them for yourself while you’re here. These UNESCO-listed rainforests are actually one of the few places in Australia where you can see glow-worms in their natural habitat! We love this top-rated evening tour because it shows you the rainforest, the waterfalls, and the glow-worms in one magical evening! 

The tour meets at the William Henry Clifford Monument at 4:30 pm and wraps up around 10:30 pm. You start with a drive through the countryside into the rainforest, then head to waterfalls where you might even take a quick swim if the conditions are right. Along the way, your guide will teach you all about the local flora and fauna and even the area’s hippie history, which we find so interesting! 

As it gets dark, you’ll head towards a hidden glow-worm spot that would be very tricky to locate on your own. This is where you’ll see thousands of these tiny critters twinkling among the stalactites and stalagmites. I promise you that it’s way more magical in person than any photo can show. These glow worm caves absolutely took my breath away. 

Best of all, this tour includes dinner! As a group, you’ll enjoy an organic vegan or vegetarian dinner right in the forest – this is Byron Bay, after all. It’s such a wholesome way to experience one of the region’s most incredible natural phenomena, so it’s no wonder that this tour has over 450 rave reviews!

Day 6 – Drive to Noosa

It’s time to say goodbye to Byron Bay and continue north to Noosa! The drive takes around 3.5 to 4 hours without stops, but we like to break up the journey and make a bit of a road trip out of it. The Gold Coast is an obvious option, and we especially like Burleigh Heads for a coffee and a walk along the beach.

Just don’t get too distracted along the way! We want to arrive in Noosa by mid-afternoon so there’s still plenty of time to check in and do a little exploring.

Burleigh Heads 

Burleigh Heads is about an hour from Byron Bay, and it’s got exactly the laid-back beach town vibe we love on an East Coast road trip, so it just makes sense as a stop today! 

We recommend taking some time to stretch your legs in Burleigh Head National Park. There are several hiking trails here, all of which offer gorgeous views over the coastline. Most of them are easy to moderate and range from around 30 minutes to a few hours, so you can choose a route depending on how much time and energy you’ve got.

Afterward, head to Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park SLSC for lunch overlooking the beach. It’s a pretty great reward after your hike, and you can always squeeze in a quick swim before getting back on the road!

Now, you could continue into the Gold Coast from here, but we decided to skip it. It’s much bigger and busier than the beach towns we wanted to focus on for this road trip, so we were happy to admire the skyline from afar and keep heading north!

Afternoon – Explore Noosa 

Once you arrive and get settled, you can explore Noosa! Here are a few of our favorite activities to see the stunning nature and charming town.

Noosa National Park Coastal Walk

The Noosa National Park Coastal Walk is one of our favorite things to do in Noosa, and it’s the perfect antidote to all of that time in the car or van today. And not only are the coastal views gorgeous, but you’re also in for a good chance of spotting dolphins, turtles, and even koalas – yes, really!

The full return walk is 10.8 kilometers (6.7 miles) and takes around 3-4 hours, but you can easily walk a shorter section and turn back whenever you’re ready. Even if you don’t tackle the whole thing, we do recommend going as far as Hell’s Gates. This is a famously dramatic rocky headland where you can rest for a bit and watch the waves crashing against the cliffs.

Swim in the Fairy Pools

If conditions are right, make a detour from the Coastal Walk to check out the Fairy Pools. These natural rock pools fill with seawater at low tide, creating little swimming holes right beside the ocean. It’s such a beautiful spot for a dip!

However, timing is really important here. The pools are completely natural and unpatrolled, so you should only swim when the weather is calm and the tide is low. If the ocean looks rough, give swimming a miss and just enjoy the views instead. You’ll also want sturdy shoes for getting there, as you’ll need to navigate the rocky coastline.

Wander through Hastings Street

Back in town, spend some time wandering along Hastings Street, the lively main strip that runs just behind Noosa Main Beach. It’s packed with cafes, restaurants, boutiques, surf shops, and galleries, so you don’t really need a plan. Just grab a coffee and have a browse!

If you’re hungry, Bistro C is a longtime favorite right by the beach and is a gorgeous spot for lunch or a sunset dinner. Hastings Street is also worth coming back to in the evening, when it gets a little livelier!

Dinner – Season Restaurant & Bar

Once you’ve checked in and freshened up, head to Season Restaurant & Bar for your first dinner in Noosa. It’s right on the beachfront between Hastings Street and Noosa Main Beach, so the location alone makes it a pretty dreamy introduction to town!

The menu focuses on fresh, seasonal produce, and there’s plenty of seafood and modern Australian dishes on offer. We’d try to get here while there’s still some daylight so you can enjoy the beach views over dinner, then take a wander along Hastings Street afterward. We’ve got a big day of exploring tomorrow, so don’t go too wild tonight!

Where to Stay in Noosa (one night)

Luxury – $$$

RACV Noosa Resort is our luxury pick, with spacious apartments and villas surrounded by tropical gardens just a short drive from Hastings Street and Main Beach. There are multiple pools, a spa, and an on-site restaurant, so it’s a great option if you fancy a bit of resort time after all that driving!

Mid-range – $$

Serenity Apartments Noosa gives you tons of space without a luxury price tag, and we love the fact that these self-contained apartments have full kitchens and balconies, as well as laundry facilities, which definitely come in handy on a road trip! There’s also a gorgeous outdoor pool, and you’re close enough to walk into Noosa Heads when you’re ready to explore.

Budget – $

At The Sound Noosa is a great budget-friendly option with bright, modern studios that still give you handy extras like kitchenettes and private patios or balconies. There’s also an outdoor pool and free parking, which is always a win on a road trip!

Holiday Park

If you’re in a campervan or RV, Noosa River Holiday Park is our pick, with powered sites in a gorgeous spot right on the Noosa River. You’ll have waterfront views and easy access to Noosaville’s restaurants and cafes, so you definitely don’t have to sacrifice location just because you’re camping!

Day 7 – Noosa 

Morning/Afternoon – Canoe through Australia’s Everglades

Today, we’re going to see a completely different side of Noosa on this Everglades tour! This is a must-do experience as far as we’re concerned. The Noosa Everglades are incredibly peaceful, with dark tea tree-stained water that creates those crazy mirror-like reflections you see in photos. It actually looks even cooler in person!

There are several pickup points around Noosa for this tour, so just choose the one that’s closest to your accommodation. The tour itself starts at 8:45 am, but pickups begin roughly an hour earlier, so it’s worth checking your exact time the night before. You should then be dropped back in Noosa at around 3 pm.

The day starts with a cruise across Lake Cootharaba before heading into Cooloola National Park. From there, you can either stay on the eco boat and take things easy, or hop into a canoe and paddle through the waterways yourself. 

The choice is yours, but when we did this tour, we went for the canoe option! We definitely recommend it, because it made the experience feel a lot more adventurous. Plus, the waters are calm, so the paddle is steady rather than super intense! 

We’re not kidding when we say that we were surrounded by forest and wildlife the whole way. Our guide also shared loads of information about the area with us along the way, which was a real plus because the ecosystem here is absolutely fascinating. In fact, nearly half of Australia’s bird species can be found in this ecosystem, which is just incredible.

There are also opportunities to buy food along the way, and our guide even took us to a brewery at a local campground afterward. Well, after all that paddling, we definitely deserved a little refreshment!

Late Afternoon – Drive to Rainbow Beach

After your morning on the water, you’ll be dropped back off in Noosa, but we’re not staying here for another night! Grab your bags and load up the car or campervan, then start making your way north to Rainbow Beach.

It’s around a 2-hour drive from Noosa, so it’s not too long of a drive after a busy morning. More importantly, staying in Rainbow Beach tonight puts you in a much better position for tomorrow’s adventure, so it’s well worth moving on rather than spending another night in Noosa.

There’s no need to rush once you arrive. Use tonight to get checked in and enjoy a quiet evening, because tomorrow is going to be a BIG one!

Dinner – Pizza or fish and chips

Rainbow Beach is a super laid-back little town, so we’re keeping dinner casual tonight! If you’re traveling by campervan or RV, you can always cook something back at camp, but there are a couple of good options if you’d rather let someone else do the work.

Rainbow Beach Pizza is our pick if you’re craving something cheesy and filling after a busy day, while The Frying Fish Cafe serves up classic fish and chips. We always love good old-fashioned fish and chips when we’re this close to the coast!

Where to Stay in Rainbow Beach (two nights) 

Luxury – $$$

Rainbow Sea Resort is a gorgeous luxury pick, with huge self-contained apartments and balconies that really make the most of the ocean views! There’s also an infinity pool overlooking the coast, and you’re just a short walk from the beach and center of town.

Mid-range – $$

Plantation Resort At Rainbow is another fantastic option right across from the beach, with spacious apartments that have full kitchens and private balconies. There’s a heated outdoor pool and hot tub too, so it’s got plenty of resort-style perks but with a pretty reasonable price tag.

Budget – $

Debbie’s Place is a more affordable option with modern blue-and-white rooms and apartments just a short walk from the center of Rainbow Beach. The staff are really friendly, and all units have private kitchenettes, which is handy if you want to save a little extra money by cooking for yourself during your two-night stay.

Holiday Park

If you’re traveling by campervan or RV, BIG4 Rainbow Beach Holiday Park has powered sites right on the waterfront, so you certainly won’t be roughing it! You’re a short drive from the center of town, but the peaceful location overlooking the water more than makes up for it – and hey, you’ll have your own wheels anyway. 

Day 8 – K’gari (Fraser Island)

Full-day – Spend a day exploring K’gari (Fraser Island)

Today is a BIG one because we’re heading to K’gari, formerly known as Fraser Island! Exploring independently can be pretty complicated because you need a suitable 4WD to tackle the difficult terrain, which is why we recommend this full-day tour. It takes care of all of the logistics for you, so you can focus on enjoying one of the most beautiful places on Australia’s East Coast!

Pickup from Rainbow Beach is at around 7:30 am, so we recommend having some breakfast supplies at your hotel or campsite. Then, once you get going, there’s a LOT packed into the day. 

You’ll start with a visit to Lake McKenzie, which is bright blue and surrounded by bright white sand, so it looks more like a tropical beach than a lake. And, fun fact, it’s filled entirely by rainwater! You’ll have time to swim here, so bring your bathers.

You’ll also get to see a completely different side of the island at Central Station and Wanggoolba Creek. One of the things that makes K’gari so unusual is that it’s the world’s largest sand island, yet somehow enormous rainforest trees grow right out of the sand!

You’ll also drive along 75 Mile Beach, which is both a beautiful stretch of coastline AND a designated highway that doubles as a landing strip for small planes! Along the way, you’ll stop at the Maheno Shipwreck, whose rusting remains have been sitting on the beach since 1935.

Lunch and morning tea are included, and you can even add a scenic flight over K’gari if you want to go all out. And keep your eyes peeled for dingoes! K’gari is famous for its wild dingo population, so spotting one would really be the cherry on top of an already epic day. You’ll arrive back in Rainbow Beach at around 4:30 pm, tired, sandy, and hopefully very happy. 

Evening – Relax

You’ve packed a LOT into today, so there’s absolutely no need to plan anything for tonight! Head back to your hotel or campsite and grab something yummy for dinner. We predict you’ll want to put your feet up after a full day exploring K’gari!

Tomorrow is mainly a travel day, so enjoy a chilled-out evening and get a good night’s sleep. We’ve got plenty more East Coast adventures to come!

Day 9 – Drive to Rockhampton

Today is one of the less glamorous days of the road trip, but it’s a necessary one! Airlie Beach is our next big stop, and rather than attempting the whole journey in one monster drive, we’re breaking it up with a night in Rockhampton.

It’s about a 6-hour drive from Rainbow Beach, so grab some yummy snacks and find a good playlist or podcast, because today is a full-on road day. The aim is really just to make some solid progress north without exhausting yourself.

Once you arrive in Rockhampton, check into your hotel or campsite and take some time to unwind. To be honest, there isn’t a ton to do here, so no need to rush around. We kept things simple and grabbed dinner at Burger Urge Rockhampton before calling it a night. Don’t worry, tomorrow, we’ll be back to the fun stuff and heading for Airlie Beach!

Where to Stay in Rockhampton

Since Rockhampton is really just an overnight stop on this itinerary, we’d prioritize somewhere comfortable where you can get a good night’s sleep after six hours on the road. You don’t need anything fancy, but a pool, a bit of extra space, and somewhere nearby to grab dinner certainly don’t hurt!

Luxury – $$$

Edge Apartment Hotel is a great place to spread out after a long driving day, with spacious rooms and apartments overlooking the Fitzroy River. There’s an indoor pool and an on-site restaurant too, so once you’ve checked in, you really don’t need to go anywhere else!

Mid-range – $$ 

Quality Hotel Regent Rockhampton feels spacious and regal, and it’s close to the center of town! It’s housed in a beautiful heritage building, with a sleek outdoor pool and an on-site restaurant – in other words, it ticks pretty much all of our boxes for an easy and enjoyable overnight stay.

Budget – $

Rockhampton Serviced Apartments are spacious and affordable, so they’re ideal if you just want somewhere clean and comfy to crash for the night. The apartments have kitchen facilities, and there’s a small outdoor pool, so you can cook for yourself and cool off after the drive if you fancy.

Holiday Park

If you’re traveling by campervan or RV, Discovery Parks Rockhampton is a handy place to stop and reset before another day on the road. There are powered sites, camp kitchens, laundry facilities, and a swimming pool, so you can recharge yourself (and your van!) before continuing north.

Day 10 – Drive to Airlie Beach

Rockhampton was really just a pit stop to break up the journey north, so today we’re getting back on the road and heading to Airlie Beach. It’s around a 5.5-hour drive, so we recommend getting a reasonably early start and aiming to arrive by mid-afternoon.

But first, breakfast! Stop by The Two Professors for a diner-style breakfast and a good coffee before you leave Rockhampton. After all, a diner breakfast is a classic road trip experience! Plus, you’ve got a fair few hours behind the wheel today, so we definitely recommend fueling up properly before you hit the highway.

Then, it’s time to head north. Airlie Beach is where the road trip really ramps up again, because tomorrow we’re heading out to explore the Whitsundays!

Check out the Capricorn Caves Cathedral

Before you lock in to the long drive to Airlie Beach, we think it’s worth making one final stop near Rockhampton. The Capricorn Caves are only about 30 minutes north of town, so they’re actually right on the way!

You’ll need to join an organized tour to explore the caves, and this 45-minute Cathedral Cave tour works perfectly for our road trip itinerary. There are multiple morning departure times, so book one that suits you and then continue north once you’re finished.

The caves themselves are seriously impressive. You’ll follow your guide through huge limestone caverns while learning about the geology, wildlife, and early explorers of the area. Keep an eye out for the enormous tree roots growing down into the caves and even tiny bats.

But the highlight has to be Cathedral Cave. This huge, high-domed chamber has such incredible natural acoustics that it’s actually used for weddings and concerts, and you’ll get to hear them for yourself during the tour. I mean, listening to music deep inside a limestone cave certainly isn’t something you get to do every day!

We also love that this stop only takes around 45 minutes, so you get to see something completely different without adding hours to an already long driving day. Plus, the cave has smooth pathways and ramp access, so this particular tour is suitable for a pretty wide range of travelers.

Afternoon – Airlie Beach 

Once you arrive in Airlie Beach, the rest of the afternoon is yours to enjoy however you like! Get checked into your hotel or campsite and take some time to unwind and freshen up after the drive, and then head out to explore whenever you’re ready. Airlie Beach isn’t huge, so you don’t need long to get a feel for the town.

Here are a few ideas on what to get up to this afternoon:

• Walk along the Bicentennial Walkway: This scenic waterfront path runs for several kilometers around the coastline, with views over the Coral Sea and Whitsunday Islands along the way. You definitely don’t need to walk the entire thing, so just pick a section and stretch your legs after all that time in the car!

• Check out one of the beaches: Boathaven Beach is one of the most popular spots close to town, with a sandy beach and beautiful turquoise water. For somewhere a little quieter, head to Cannonvale Beach, which is a good spot to relax away from the main tourist hub.

• Grab a beachfront cocktail and enjoy the view: After 5.5 hours of driving, we think you’ve earned one! Sorrento Restaurant & Bar, The Rocks Restaurant & Bar, and Coral Sea Pavilion are all gorgeous waterfront options where you can grab a drink and soak up the views.

Where to Stay in Airlie Beach

Luxury – $$$

Mirage Whitsundays is a 5-star resort offering luxury apartments and villas along the waterfront, with sweeping Coral Sea views. With a spa and a spacious pool, this place definitely gives vacation vibes, and we love the on-site Whisper Restaurant and Gin Bar, too!

Mid-range – $$

Whitsunday Reflections is a 4-star property offering modern apartments with gorgeous views of the Coral Sea! It’s also just a short walk from Airlie Beach’s best shops and restaurants, and there’s an outdoor pool and hot tub on site, plus free parking. 

Budget – $

Airlie Beach Hotel is a fun hotel right in the heart of town, with a lively pub on site that’s well known around town for its yummy wood-fired pizzas. Some of the rooms and suites offer sea views, and they all have private balconies, so you’ll have plenty of space to spread out.

Holiday Park 

If you’re traveling by campervan or RV, BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort is a great base, with landscaped campsites and plenty of facilities to make your stay comfortable. It’s especially good for families, with a huge waterslide park, lagoon-style pool, mini golf, outdoor cinema, and even an animal park!

Day 11 – Airlie Beach

Tomorrow is one of the most exciting days of the road trip, so we’re keeping today relaxed. This is a great chance to chill out and enjoy Airlie Beach’s beauty. It’s all about vacation vibes!

Breakfast – The Deck Airlie Beach

Start the morning with a wander along Shute Harbour Road, which is Airlie Beach’s main drag and has tons of cafes and breakfast spots to choose from. You can always just see what takes your fancy, but we really liked The Deck!

As the name suggests, there’s a lovely outdoor deck where you can eat breakfast al fresco, and it’s right by the waterfront promenade, so the whole place has that laid-back holiday feel we’re after today. We especially loved the eggs Benedict, although there are plenty of other breakfast classics on the menu if that’s not your thing.

There’s no need to rush off afterward, either. Take some time to wander along Shute Harbour Road and keep today relaxed ahead of tomorrow’s Whitsundays adventure.

Morning – Your choice!

This morning, you can choose from a few fun Airlie Beach adventures! There are a couple of great options, so just choose which activity suits you best.

See the reef heart from a scenic flight 

If you want to see just how huge and beautiful the Whitsundays really are, this scenic flight is such a cool way to do it. You’ll spend around an hour flying over Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet, the Great Barrier Reef, and the famous Heart Reef – and you can only really fully see the heart shape from above! 

Everyone gets a window seat, so you’ll have amazing views the whole way, and the pilot shares commentary as you fly. You’ve also got a pretty good chance of spotting manta rays and whales below, depending on the season.

There are departures every 30 minutes from 7:30 am to 3 pm, so it’s really easy to fit into today’s plans. Best of all, the meeting point is only about a two-minute walk from breakfast, which is super convenient.

Feel the thrill of jet boating 

If you fancy something a little more chaotic this morning, this jet boat ride is SUCH good fun. It only lasts around 30 minutes, but they really pack a lot into it!

You’ll tear across Pioneer Bay in a 380hp jet boat while the driver throws in 180° and 360° spins and drifts. We were laughing basically the whole way! We also loved the gorgeous views of Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands between the stunts, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot turtles in the water.

The meeting point is around a 14-minute walk or 2-minute drive from breakfast, so it’s really easy to fit into today’s plans. If you’re a bit of an adrenaline junkie, you won’t want to miss this one!

Lunch – Laguna Airlie Beach

After a fun morning, you don’t have to go far for lunch! Laguna is right by the lagoon, which is where we’ll be spending this afternoon, so head over when you start getting hungry and grab a bite to eat.

Laguna is an open-air spot that serves lots of very aesthetically pleasing dishes, from brightly colored salads and acai bowls to big sharing plates, and some creative cocktails! The gorgeous views of the lagoon don’t exactly hurt, either.

And if you’re not hungry yet, no worries. You can head to the lagoon first and just pop over to Laguna whenever you’re ready.

Afternoon – Airlie Beach Lagoon

After lunch, spend the afternoon swimming and sunning yourself at the Airlie Beach Lagoon! This huge public swimming lagoon sits right on the foreshore overlooking the Coral Sea and Whitsunday Islands, and trust us, this is not your average public pool.

For one thing, it’s surrounded by grassy areas where you can spread out and relax, and there are separate swimming areas, so there’s plenty of space whether you’re traveling with kids or very much hoping to get away from them! There are also cute little sandy beaches, and best of all, it’s completely free to use! There are BBQ and picnic facilities around the lagoon, and it’s patrolled by lifeguards during designated hours.

We’d aim to get here at around midday and hang out until 3 or 4 pm. Swim, sunbathe, read a book, and enjoy the crown jewel of Airlie Beach. Tomorrow is going to be a BIG day, so make the most of the downtime!

Evening – Relax on a sunset cruise

After a lazy afternoon at the lagoon, head back to your hotel to shower and get changed because we’re ending today on a high note with this sunset cruise!

We did this cruise, and we absolutely loved it! It was the perfect way to cap off a day of swimming and wandering around Airlie Beach. 

We were welcomed on board with a glass of sparkling wine, and then the boat glided out around Pioneer Bay, with the Whitsunday Islands making a pretty spectacular backdrop. We cruised past Cannonvale and Pigeon Island, and the crew pointed out the best places to look for wildlife along the way. Turtles are often spotted here, and there’s always a chance of seeing dolphins or even a dugong if you’re lucky.

There was also a bar onboard, so we grabbed another drink each once we had finished our welcome wine, and we really enjoyed the fact that the cruise felt social, but not rowdy. We had plenty of space to sit and just soak in the views and, perhaps best of all, we got to tuck into a yummy antipasto platter about halfway through! 

Departure times vary by season, usually from around 4:15 to 5 pm, and you’ll need to arrive 15 minutes early. Make sure you allow yourself some time to freshen up back at your hotel, although there’s no need to dress up. This is just a fun and effortless way to appreciate Airlie Beach’s amazing sunsets, and afterward, you’re just a few minutes’ walk from tonight’s dinner spot. 

Dinner – The Garden Bar Bistro

After your sunset cruise, you won’t have far to go for dinner! The Garden Bar Bistro is only about a five-minute walk from the marina, so you can just head straight there after you step off the boat.

It’s right on the waterfront at Coral Sea Marina, with gorgeous views over the water and the Whitsunday Islands! The menu is pretty varied too, with everything from share plates to burgers and fresh seafood, so there should be something for everyone.

And we have to give a special shoutout to the espresso martinis! They’re known for their Espresso Martini Teaser Board, which is a pretty fun way to round off a relaxed day in Airlie Beach. Just don’t go too crazy, as we have an early start tomorrow.

Day 12 – Whitsundays

Today is one of the days we’ve been waiting for – eek! Yup, we’re finally heading out to explore the Whitsundays, and this is DEFINITELY something to get excited about.

Breakfast – Garuma Breakfast Restaurant & Cafe

First things first, we need a good breakfast. Garuma is a great spot to fuel up before your tour, and most importantly, it opens at 6:30 am every day, so it works even if you’ve booked an early departure.

There’s a big all-day breakfast menu with everything from eggs Benedict and smashed avocado to pancakes and a full big breakfast, plus plenty of coffee. You might need it today!

We definitely recommend going for something hearty, and you can always grab a smoothie or another coffee for the road if you need it. When you’re ready, make your way to your tour meeting point, because we’re heading to Whitehaven Beach!

Full-day – Spend the day snorkeling and exploring the Whitsunday Islands

Okay, THIS is one of the days we’ve been waiting for! The Whitsundays are easily one of the biggest highlights of this entire road trip, and this full-day rafting tour is our favorite way to experience them.

We’ve done a lot of tours from Airlie Beach, but this one really stood out. Even getting around is fun because you’ll be aboard a speedy semi-rigid inflatable boat, which means you can cover a lot of ground while enjoying a pretty wild ride between stops!

And trust us, you’ll want to cover plenty of ground here. You’ll visit Whitehaven Beach, where the ridiculously white silica sand meets bright turquoise water, and walk up to Hill Inlet Lookout. We’d seen this view in photos a million times before visiting, but seeing those famous swirling sandbars in person was something else entirely.

You can choose between two routes. Northern Exposure departs at 8:45 am and includes more snorkeling time, while Southern Lights leaves at 10 am and focuses more on Whitehaven Beach. We went for the snorkeling and absolutely loved it. There were schools of colorful tropical fish everywhere, and we even had a sea turtle cruise past us!

Lunch on the beach is included, with time to swim, relax, and enjoy the scenery before heading off again. Pickup is included too, so you really don’t have to worry about organizing anything yourself.

This was one of our favorite days in the Whitsundays, and given that the tour has thousands of glowing 5-star reviews, we’re clearly not alone! If you’re only going to book one big adventure while you’re in Airlie Beach, make it this one. It’s super in-demand, though, so be sure to snag your spot well in advance – there’s always the option to reserve now and pay later!

Evening – Relax

After a full day exploring the Whitsundays, we’re keeping tonight very low-key! Head back to your hotel or campsite to shower off all that salt and sand, and give yourself some time to relax. 

When you’re ready for dinner, we recommend Eastwoods Dining on the Airlie Beach Esplanade. This place serves Southeast Asian fusion, so for us, this was a fun change after a few days of classic beach town foods. We went for the Penang curry and the coconut chicken salad, which were both delicious, and just what we needed after a long day!

Then it’s back to your hotel or campsite to get some sleep. We’ve got another big stretch of the East Coast to cover tomorrow, so you’ll want to be well-rested!

Day 13 – Drive to Cairns 

Today is a bit of a long-haul driving day as we make our way from Airlie Beach to Cairns. You’ve got around 7.5 hours behind the wheel, so we recommend stocking up on snacks the night before and hitting the road nice and early. Fortunately, we’ve got a gorgeous beach stop to break up the journey!

Mission Beach

After around 5.5 hours on the road, we’re sure you’ll be ready to stretch your legs, so pull over in the sleepy, tropical town of Mission Beach. The area is actually made up of four coastal villages that are connected by a whopping 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) of golden, palm-fringed beach, so trust us, this is not your typical highway rest stop!

This is the ideal place to take a walk along the sand and grab some lunch and coffee. If the conditions are right, you could even change into your swimmers and go for a dip in the water before you get back on the road.

You’re well into tropical North Queensland now, so keep your eyes peeled for cassowaries around the area, too. These birds are a bit like tropical turkeys, with big black bodies, blue heads, and big casques (helmet-like growths) on top of their heads. They’re pretty rare, and they can be defensive, so if you do spot one, be respectful and give them plenty of space.

From Mission Beach, it should take you another two hours to reach Cairns. We know this is a long driving day, but the finish line is in sight now, and hopefully this tropical stop will leave you feeling refreshed and renewed! 

Evening – Cairns

You made it! Once you arrive in Cairns, check into your hotel or campsite, unpack, and give yourself permission to do very little for the rest of the evening. After 7.5 hours on the road, you’ve definitely earned it!

When you’re ready for dinner, we recommend Yaya’s Hellenic Kitchen & Bar. This is a super authentic, family-run Greek restaurant overlooking the Cairns Esplanade. And in true Greek style, they really do treat you like family here! We also love the generous portions – it’s just what you need after a long day on the road. There are lots of sharing dishes on the menu, too.

Then head back for an early-ish night because tomorrow is a BIG one. We’re finally heading out to the Great Barrier Reef!

Where to Stay in Cairns (three nights) 

Luxury – $$$

Crystalbrook Flynn is a luxurious 5-star hotel located right near the water. The rooms range in size from twin to 2-bedroom suites, and there are two pools and three restaurants on site – what more could you need?

Mid-range – $$ 

The Abbott Boutique Hotel is a stylish, central option with modern rooms and a handy location close to the Cairns Esplanade and city sights. We especially like it for this itinerary because you can walk to restaurants, museums, and the reef departure area without needing to rely on the car for everything.

Budget – $ 

Dreamtime Hostel is an awesome, locally-owned hostel in central Cairns with an eco-friendly ethos and a laid-back vibe. It’s social and friendly, but it’s not a party hostel, and the tropical garden and pool area is the perfect spot to relax between adventures. 

Holiday Park 

As you may have realized by now, we’re big fans of BIG4 holiday parks, and the Cairns Coconut site is no exception! With a swimming pool, splash park, licensed cafe, and tennis courts, there’s plenty here to keep you busy, and it’s only a 10-minute drive from central Cairns.

Day 14 – Cairns

Morning/Afternoon – Explore the Great Barrier Reef on a superyacht

Today’s snorkeling and diving tour of the Great Barrier Reef starts bright and early at 8 am, so get up with enough time to grab a quick breakfast and make your way to the meeting point. We opted for the snorkeling and scuba diving tour, but you can always choose the snorkel-only option or an introductory dive if you’re not PADI certified!

We boarded a sleek superyacht (yes, really!) and cruised out to two outer reef locations, where we had the best time snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters. It was breathtaking, but the dive site was even better! Everywhere we looked, there was something incredible to see, from coral formations to turtles gliding right by us. It was so exciting! 

The crew and our dive instructor, Jack, were very well-organized and made us feel super safe. Jack was very patient and so knowledgeable about the reef, and we learned a ton from him. 

Towards the end of the tour, we also enjoyed an amazing barbecue on board. The seafood was amazing, but there were plenty of veggie and vegan options, so no worries on that front. We also enjoyed a complimentary glass of Australian wine as we sailed back towards the shore, which was the perfect note to end on. 

This tour is truly a top-tier way to experience the Great Barrier Reef. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or only want to snorkel, we truly cannot recommend this tour enough. It’s a truly breathtaking experience and hands down THE best thing to do in Cairns.

Evening/Dinner – Visit the Cairns Night Markets

After a full day at the Great Barrier Reef, head back to your hotel for a quick freshen-up before diving into a different kind of adventure – this time, a food one! The Cairns Night Markets come alive every evening from 4:30 pm to 11 pm and are perfect for dinner and a bit of laid-back exploring. 

There’s no shortage of delicious options here, but our top pick is Pho Street for authentic bowls of Vietnamese pho. Then afterward, Churro Time is our favorite spot for dessert.

And if you’re in the mood for a more traditional sit-down dinner, walk just two minutes over to Villa Romana, a lovely waterfront Italian restaurant with great pasta and views to match. Then, afterward, you can head back to the markets to browse the unique souvenirs and local goods.

Night Cap – Whiskey and Wine by Crystalbrook

After the markets, head just next door to Whiskey and Wine by Crystalbrook for a nightcap at one of the best watering holes in town. This rooftop bar is known for its expertly crafted cocktails and gorgeous views over the water. After dark, you can also see the Reef Eye Ferris wheel all lit up, so this place definitely makes for some great Insta-worthy photo opportunities!

Day 15 –  Cairns

Today, we’ve got two incredible ways to explore Cairns! If you love nature, we recommend diving into the wild beauty and Aboriginal culture of tropical North Queensland on this day trip. Or if you’re craving something a bit more relaxing, you can ride the historic Kuranda Scenic Railway to a rainforest village where you’ll have the chance to get up close to wildlife like koalas and kangaroos.

Option 1 – Day trip to Cape Tribulation, Mossman Gorge, and the Daintree Rainforest

If you want to see both the lush green beauty and rich cultural heritage of Tropical North Queensland, this day trip definitely delivers! It’s an in-depth rainforest experience that will show you the best of this unique and biodiverse part of Australia, and help you to understand what makes it so special.

We loved this tour so much! Our day began with a visit to Mossman Gorge, where we got to take part in a traditional smoke ceremony with the Kuku Yalanji people. It was such a cool way to connect with the area’s heritage, and then we had time to explore the gorge itself. It was like visiting a land before time, and we even got to go swimming here!

After drying off, we made our way to Daintree Village, where we had lunch before embarking on a wildlife cruise along the river. We were lucky enough to spot a couple of crocodiles basking in the sun, which was thrilling – and just a little scary! 

The last stop of the day was at Thornton’s Beach, which is where the rainforest turns into a white sand beach! It was gorgeous, and it felt a lot more wild than the beaches close to Cairns.

All in all, this tour was a real adventure, and we totally understand why it has so many fantastic reviews. We were totally wowed by the wild beauty of Queensland, and we loved learning more about the region’s rich cultural history. We weren’t the only ones –  read thousands of glowing reviews here!

Option 2 – Take the scenic railway to the village of Kuranda

If you’re traveling with kids or just want a more relaxed day with lots of variety, this full-day trip to Kuranda is the perfect pick! It’s less about trekking through the jungle and more about enjoying views, wildlife, and local markets. It’s definitely our top choice for families, but this also works if you’re just looking for something a bit more chilled out today.

The Kuranda Scenic Railway is definitely one of the big highlights of this tour. It winds up through the mountains past waterfalls and thick rainforest, so the journey itself is half the fun. Then once you get to Kuranda, you’ve got free time to explore at your own pace, which we much prefer to being shuffled around in a big group all day.

You can use this time to check out Birdworld, Koala Gardens, or the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary if you fancy some wildlife, although those attractions do cost extra. Or you can just browse the markets and enjoy the village – it’s totally up to you! 

Then you’ll come back down on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, which gives you this totally different perspective over the treetops. On a clear day, the views stretch right out towards the Coral Sea. This is a much gentler adventure than the hiking tour, so if you’re after something easygoing, this is the one to book.

Dinner – Salt House

Tonight, you get to treat yourself to dinner at Salt House, one of Cairns’ most iconic waterfront restaurants. This upscale yet casual spot has a beautiful open-air setting right on the marina, making it perfect for winding down with a view. The seafood here is a standout (we loved the barramundi!), and their cocktails are just as impressive. It’s a popular spot, especially in the evening, so we definitely recommend booking ahead. 

Evening – Stroll along the esplanade

Since you’re already on the waterfront, finish your night with a relaxing stroll along the Cairns Esplanade boardwalk. The views are especially beautiful in the evening, and if you’re craving a sweet treat, grab a scoop from Just Divine Gelato. Or, if you’re up for one last highlight, you can always ride the Reef Eye Ferris Wheel for a stunning panoramic view of Cairns all lit up at night!

Day 16

And just like that, our epic East Coast road trip has come to an end! Today, it’s time to return your vehicle and make your way to Cairns Airport for your flight home or wherever you’re heading next.

Since we recommend booking a one-way rental, you don’t need to worry about somehow getting the car, campervan, or RV all the way back to Sydney. Just return it to the relevant Cairns depot, and be sure to leave plenty of time for the vehicle inspection and any final paperwork before your flight.

Depending on your plans, you may actually want to return your vehicle earlier. Once you arrive in Cairns, you won’t need it for the Great Barrier Reef tour, so returning it on your first day here could save you a few days of rental and parking costs. Just check where the depot is and whether the timing works with your arrival.

Then, it’s off to the airport! You’ve officially driven around 2,700 kilometers (1,680 miles) up Australia’s East Coast, with K’gari, the Whitsundays, and the Great Barrier Reef under your belt. Not bad for two weeks!

What a road trip! Driving Australia’s East Coast is one of those adventures where every few days feels completely different.
