Itinerary Overview
Pompeii is a fairly compact city, so you can walk between most of the stops in this itinerary. Plus, exploring on foot is such a great way to get to know the place! And for when you need to travel further, the local train system is well connected and easy to use, particularly for the journey to Herculaneum on Day 2.
Day 1: Explore the ancient ruins of Pompeii on a guided tour with an archaeologist, then enjoy lunch and wine tasting at a nearby vineyard! Finish up with dinner and rooftop drinks in the modern city.
Day 2: Take the train to Herculaneum for a guided tour and lunch, then choose between hiking Mount Vesuvius or spending a relaxed afternoon exploring modern Pompeii. End the day with pizza and an evening stroll through the city center, with a stop for gelato, of course!
Day 1
Breakfast – KLEM Specialty Coffee
Start your day with breakfast at KLEM Specialty Coffee, just a 10-minute walk from the Pompeii Archaeological Park. It opens at 7:30 am daily except Mondays, making it the perfect place to fuel up before a morning of exploring.
We recommend keeping it classic with an Italian breakfast of a freshly baked cornetto and a rich espresso. And if you need a little more caffeine to prepare for the day ahead, this is also one of the best specialty coffee spots in Pompeii, so take advantage!
Morning – Explore Pompeii with an Archaeologist
No visit to Pompeii is complete without exploring the ancient ruins, and we can’t recommend this archaeologist-led tour enough. It was honestly one of the best guided tours we’ve ever done, and it completely exceeded our expectations!
The tour lasts around two hours, with multiple morning departure times available. We booked the 9:30 am tour, which finished at around 11:30 am, and we’d recommend booking no later than 10:30 am, so you have plenty of time for the rest of your day.
Your guide meets the group at the Porta Marina Superiore entrance before leading you through the ruins. One of the things that makes this tour so special is that the guides are qualified archaeologists, so you get far more than just dates and facts. Our guide had actually worked as an archaeologist at Pompeii herself, and her stories brought the ancient city to life in a way that we never could have experienced on our own!
Over the course of the tour, you’ll visit many of Pompeii’s most important landmarks, including the Forum, Basilica, Stabian Baths, House of the Faun, and the city’s ancient theaters, while learning what daily life was like before Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79.
The tour ends inside the archaeological park, so you’re free to continue exploring at your own pace afterward. We spent a little more time wandering the ruins by ourselves, and we’re so glad we did the guided tour first because the site is enormous. Having that background knowledge made the rest of our visit so much more meaningful.
Coffee break – Amato Caffè
After spending the morning exploring the Pompeii ruins, you’ll definitely have earned a break! Since your afternoon activity includes lunch, we recommend stopping at Amato Caffè for a coffee before continuing your day.
Located right in the center of town, it’s the perfect place to rest your feet and cool down after a few hours walking around the archaeological site. We actually used this time to head back to our hotel to freshen up as well. Trust us, after exploring Pompeii in the Italian sun, you’ll appreciate the chance to recharge!
If you’re feeling hungry, the café also serves light bites to keep you going until lunch, but we’d try to save plenty of room for the incredible meal waiting for you at the winery.
Afternoon – Go wine tasting and enjoy lunch at Bosco de Medici Winery
After a morning immersed in ancient history, it’s time to slow things down with one of our favorite experiences in Pompeii. We recommend booking this wine tasting for 1:30 pm, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the ruins beforehand without feeling rushed.
The winery is just a five-minute drive from Pompeii’s city center, and getting there by taxi is quick and easy. Once you arrive, you’ll be taken on a guided tour of the estate, where you’ll stroll through the vineyards as you learn about the winemaking process, and even visit an ancient Roman necropolis dating back to AD 79! It’s such a unique setting and ties in beautifully with everything you’ve explored earlier in the day.
Then comes the best part – a delicious three-course lunch! What we loved about this meal was that every dish really celebrated the flavors of the region. We ate local cheeses, handmade pasta, and tomatoes grown in the volcanic soil surrounding Mount Vesuvius. Each course was paired with wines produced right here on the estate, including the famous Lacryma Christi, which has been produced on these volcanic slopes for centuries.
The experience wraps up at around 3:30 pm, leaving the rest of the afternoon completely free. If you decide you’d like to spend longer exploring the Pompeii ruins, simply book a later tour time. There aren’t any fixed plans afterward, so there’s no need to rush. We’d much rather enjoy both experiences properly than squeeze everything into a tight schedule, and it seems hundreds of other travelers agree—read the glowing reviews here!
Dinner – Ristorante Spinelli Bistrot
Before dinner tonight, head back to your hotel for a little downtime. After lots of exploring and drinking wine in the sun, we definitely needed to take a moment to rest and freshen up!
Then, when you’re ready, make your way to Ristorante Spinelli Bistrot for a relaxed and elegant Italian dinner. We love this spot because it overlooks the beautiful Sanctuary of the Madonna of the Rosary, and the menu focuses on fresh, seasonal Italian ingredients!
The seafood dishes and homemade pasta were definitely the menu highlights for us. We highly recommend the tartar and the spaghetti alla puttanesca, but there are so many good options!
Another thing that makes this restaurant feel so special is the warm hospitality. The owner really makes guests feel right at home, and he even serves espresso in his grandmother’s vintage china cups, which feels so cute and personal.
Finally, save room for dessert! The homemade cannolo with raspberry coulis is heavenly, and it’s the perfect sweet ending to a fantastic meal. Bon appetit!
Evening – The Roof
After a delicious dinner, cap off your first day in Pompeii with a cocktail at The Roof, a stylish (and literally named) rooftop bar just a five-minute walk from Ristorante Spinelli Bistrot!
We’d recommend booking a table in advance, especially if you’re visiting during the summer months. The rooftop is incredibly popular, and if you’re lucky, you’ll score a table overlooking Piazza Bartolo Longo and the Sanctuary of the Madonna of the Rosary.
The atmosphere strikes the perfect balance between sophisticated and relaxed. We dressed smart casual, but there’s no formal dress code, so just come as you are and enjoy the evening. The service is excellent too, with friendly staff who make you feel welcome from the moment you arrive. We were even treated to complimentary parmigiana from the chef before our drinks arrived!
The cocktail menu has plenty to choose from, and if you still have room after dinner, we’d definitely recommend sharing the tiramisù. We ended up spending a couple of hours here simply soaking up the atmosphere, with a DJ providing background music and even fireworks lighting up the mountains in the distance. It’s the perfect way to end your first day in Pompeii!

Day 2
Morning – Explore Herculaneum with an archeologist guide
If you have a second day in Pompeii, we highly recommend spending the morning exploring nearby Herculaneum on this guided tour. While Herculaneum is often overshadowed by Pompeii, we actually think the two sites complement each other perfectly, and we really enjoyed visiting this smaller and quieter site.
Getting there couldn’t be easier. Catch the train from Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri station towards Naples and get off at Ercolano Scavi. The journey takes around 30 minutes and costs approximately €3 each way.
We’d recommend grabbing breakfast at a café near your hotel before setting off, then booking this archaeologist-led tour for 10:30 am. Leave Pompeii at around 9:45 am to give yourself plenty of time to reach the meeting point.
Like the Pompeii tour, this experience is led by a qualified archaeologist, and it makes such a difference. Rather than simply pointing out the ruins, your guide brings the ancient city to life with fascinating stories about the people who once lived here and how their daily lives were frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.
Over the course of two hours, you’ll visit beautifully preserved houses, bathhouses, temples, and public buildings, including the House of the Deer, the Samnite House, and the remarkably intact thermal baths. We definitely came away with a much better sense of what it would have been like to live in Herculaneum!

The menu features a mix of classic Neapolitan dishes and fresh sandwiches, plus some lighter lunch options. Grab a table outside if the weather’s nice and take a moment to recharge after another fascinating morning exploring ancient history.
Once you’ve finished lunch, make your way back to Ercolano Scavi station and catch the train back to Pompeii, where you can choose between hiking Mount Vesuvius or enjoying a more relaxed afternoon exploring the modern city.
Afternoon – Check out Mount Vesuvius or Pompeii city center
Option 1: Hike Mount Vesuvius
If you still have some energy left after Herculaneum, then there’s no better way to spend the afternoon hiking to the rim of Mount Vesuvius. After all, this is the volcano that changed this region forever!
This guided hiking tour usually departs at around 2:30 or 3 pm and meets near the entrance to the Pompeii ruins. Round-trip transport is included, making it much easier to reach the volcano than arranging the journey independently.
Booking a tour is also a smart way to secure your place, as daily entry to Mount Vesuvius is limited and you don’t want to miss out! Once you arrive, your guide will lead you along the trail while sharing more about the volcano’s geology, its famous eruption in AD 79, and the enormous impact it had on Pompeii and Herculaneum.
The climb to the crater rim is quite steep, but it only takes around 30 minutes. Just take your time and remember to wear comfortable, supportive shoes. Along the way, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to stop to enjoy the increasingly impressive views as you make your way up, then once you reach the top, you can peer into the crater and admire sweeping panoramas across the Bay of Naples! On some days, you may even spot small puffs of steam rising from inside the volcano.
The entire excursion lasts around three hours, so you should be back in Pompeii by approximately 6 pm. It’s an active afternoon, but after this hike, you truly will have “completed Pompeii”!
Option 2: Explore Modern Pompeii
If you’d rather take things slow this afternoon, head back to Pompeii and spend some time exploring the modern city. Most visitors come solely for the archaeological site before moving on to Naples or the Amalfi Coast, so Pompeii itself actually feels much quieter than you might expect!
A great place to start is Piazza Bartolo Longo, which is the heart of the city. Grab a coffee at one of the cafés lining the square and simply enjoy watching local life go by. From here, it’s just a short walk to the Santuario della Beata Vergine Maria del Santo Rosario di Pompei. It’s so worth checking out the interior of this impressive basilica, even if you only stay for a few minutes.
If you’re in the mood for a little shopping, wander along Via Sacra and Via Roma, where you’ll find everything from local boutiques and souvenir shops to cafés and gelaterias. We loved simply strolling through the streets without a plan. After two days of ancient history, it’s a nice reminder that Pompeii is a thriving modern city as well. This option is perfect if you want a more relaxed pace before dinner, or if you’ve already done plenty of hiking elsewhere in Italy.
Dinner – Ristorante Pizzeria Bellavie
When you’re ready for dinner, head to Ristorante Pizzeria Bellavie in the heart of modern Pompeii. Whether you spent the afternoon hiking Mount Vesuvius or wandering around the city center, you’ll definitely have worked up an appetite by now! Just keep in mind that the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays.
This welcoming restaurant serves classic Italian favorites. We absolutely loved the pizzas here, but they’ve also got a ton of fresh pasta dishes and plenty of pizzas and traditional dishes to choose from. After two busy days of sightseeing, it’s the perfect place to settle in, order a pizza, and enjoy a relaxed final dinner in Pompeii.
The central location is especially convenient, as you can easily continue exploring the city on foot afterward. Just remember to leave a little room for dessert, because one of Pompeii’s most popular gelato shops is right next door!
Dessert – Gioelia
End your second day in Pompeii with gelato from Gioelia, which is conveniently located right next door to Ristorante Pizzeria Bellavie! It’s one of the city’s most popular gelato shops and stays open until 3 am, so there’s absolutely no need to rush.
Grab your favorite flavor and spend the rest of the evening wandering through the softly lit streets of modern Pompeii. The city feels especially lovely after dark, when the day-trippers have left, as it’s so much calmer.
Plus, there are also plenty of small wine bars dotted around the center, so you can easily turn your evening stroll into one last drink before heading back to your hotel. It’s the perfect way to wrap up two wonderful days in Pompeii – saluti!
