When you are craving exceptional Thai Cuisine, Po Thai Restaurant in Playa del Carmen is the spot to go! Their slogan is “Original Thai Cuisine”, and I assure you, it is precisely that. All the eccentric flavors you expect from each dish are bursting at the seams.
Walk into a tastefully decorated space with authentic bamboo and traditional adornment touches. There is a delightful patio to sit on and enjoy your meal while watching the people pass you.
Now for their menu. This took me a while to decide, as the variety is excellent.
After much deliberation, Dan and I started with the Mix Appetizer comprising shrimp croquettes, mixed satay, and spring and summer rolls. My favorite was the spring rolls, a delicate crunch packed with garden-fresh julienne vegetables. Too delicious!
The mains were out of this world! I tucked into the Pad Med Mamoang with shrimp, and Dan got the heat going with a Gaeng Kiew Whan Beef Green Curry. The intense spices were leveled out with back tastes of freshly squeezed lime.
Our Coconut Thai Flan and Khoa Niew Ma Muang desserts completed our meal in a sweet and tropical way! Our server was fabulous. You can expect a decent wait for your meal, however, you won’t be sorry! Undoubtedly, this is one of the best restaurants in Playa del Carmen. Plus, it’s super affordable too!

Dan and I couldn’t wait to try this iconic chicken meal at Ferron’s Jerk Chicken! We ordered the Jerk Chicken Meal for 2. The chicken is served hot alongside two steamy bread rolls and scrumptious sauces. In addition, you can choose two side dishes. The flavor is outstanding! The distinct taste of garlic and a blend of herbs and spices make this chicken so divine.
The menu includes marinated pork ribs, deep-fried chicken, and a morish Jamaican Curry. If I could sum this menu up in a word, it would be “Soul Food”.
The gratitude wall is my favorite part of this fantastic Restaurant in Playa del Carmen. I took a moment to look at all the locals and travelers who frequented Ferron’s Jerk Chicken. A wall filled with smiles and meal satisfaction.

Trattoria Del Centro is a cozy, family Italian restaurant in Playa del Carmen. The setting oozes vacation vibes. The tables and chairs are on soft white gravel, and the string lights add that finishing ambiance touch.
Dan can never refuse an excellent pizza. For this reason, Pizza Napoletana comes highly recommended. The secret to this famous pizza lies in the dough and its preparation. Simone, the pizzaiolo, has mastered this art. The crust is thinner in the center and thicker around the outside. Filled with a generous amount of mozzarella, Napoletana sauce, and fresh basil. It is morish!
I savored every mouthful of my Squid Ink Linguine with mixed seafood. The pasta was al dente and the seafood expertly prepared. The flavors are outstanding!

The décor in this restaurant in Playa del Carmen has a modern, classic Japanese look. The outside patio is ideal for enjoying the vibe while indulging in some sublime sushi. Each piece melts in your mouth.
Next, we moved on to Our Famous Spheres. The Sphere of the House was my choice – it was too delicious! Dan fancied a bit of a bite, so his Sphere Mexa Style choice was ideal. I highly recommend these breaded spheres. They are unique in both concept and flavor. Too yummy for words!
Alongside the chilled vibe, the expertly prepared Margheritas cooled us down in a flash. In addition, we were spoilt with excellent service and live music. The décor is green and fresh, just like their organic ingredients and mindful menu. The breakfast menu is fabulous! We were each given a complimentary freshly squeezed juice shot and a brownie as we were seated.
I had a bit of a sweet craving, so I opted for the New Vegan Hotcake Sensation. The combination of sweet fruit and compote, vegan yogurt, and infused vegan cream satisfied my craving! Wow, sensational in both presentation and taste.
Dan opted for the Roquefort Eggs Benedict and kept to the vegetarian option. His eggs were cooked just right. The sides of rustic potatoes and crispy salad made his breakfast extra delicious. The complementary ingredients of garden-fresh vegetables, brie cheese, and Roquefort sauce blended perfectly with each bite. We finished off our meal with an aromatic-infused vegan coffee.

Now for their famous ceviche dish options. For those unfamiliar with ceviche, this is a traditional Peruvian dish prepared with marinated raw fish or seafood. If you love sushi, you will love this even more.
The Nikkei Ceviche is an ideal option as it has a “sushi” feel. Sublime and flavorsome! I ordered the Seafood Ceviche, and Dan kept it real with the Classic Ceviche. The spicy marinade with distinct lime backsplash flavors is outstanding.

The MVAGATA Hotel houses the Beach Club and Rooftop restaurants. Treat yourself to a fantastic meal packed with local ingredients and flavor. While you do, be mesmerized by the spectacular ocean view!
Dan and I visited for the day and decided to grab some lunch. It was a scorcher of a day, so the Cold Dishes looked very appealing. I decided on the Tuna tostada. The tuna was fresh, and the vegetables crisp. The tostada was not too oily, given it is deep-fried. Very flavorsome! In keeping with his need for chili, Dan ordered the Beef Carpaccio with chili mayo. The bite he was craving did not disappoint.
For dessert, I tried the Mango Cake. Deliciously fruity and decadent. Dan opted for the Lemon Tart with mezcal. The sweetness of the mezcal set off the zesty lemon tart flavor. Too divine.

It’s not just about the actual patty. Instead, with the right combination of trimmings, an ordinary burger becomes an epic burger!
This burger Restaurant in Playa del Carmen definitely meets the epic burger standards. I ordered the Una Hamburguesa Llamada Deseo. A delicious combination of machengo, portobello al chimichurri, truffle mayo, and thick-cut bacon. Can you taste it? It is super-duper delicious!
Dan opted for the Aguacatona. The crunchy pork belly paired with chimichurri, panel cheese, and avocado made for a scrumptious burger-eating experience. Our tuna was pure perfection. Lightly seared with just the right amount of sauce and bursting with flavor freshness.
We did not order the Octopus. However, we saw it being delivered to a neighboring table. The entire Octopus gracefully wrapped around a fresh rosemary stick and stood upright. A work of culinary art! Next time we will definitely order it for ourselves.

Other Activities to do While You’re in Playa del Carmen
Eating at amazing restaurants in Playa del Carmen is just the start of what this vibrant town has to offer. In fact, there are so many fun activities in Playa del Carmen, that it can be a little overwhelming! Here are a few more of my favorite things to do here which I think you’ll love:
- Chill out at the beach – Some of the best beaches in Mexico are actually right here in Playa del Carmen! A few of my favorites include Mamitas Beach, the less crowded Playacar Beach, and Parque Fundadores Beach which is the widest beach around here and has calm water perfect for swimming.
- Scuba dive – We’re avid divers and the scuba diving around Playa del Carmen is so good! The water is warm all year round and it really feels like you’re in Finding Nemo! For certified divers, this 4-hour diving experience gets you two different dive sites. Or you can try diving in a cenote, which is incredible! If you’re new to scuba, this 1-day diving course gets you diving after lessons in a pool.
- Visit Mayan Ruins – Whether you’re a huge history fan or want to grab some epic shots for your Instagram, there are tons of cool Mayan Ruins in Mexico to check out! This full-day tour is our top pick for visiting the famous Chichen Itza from Playa del Carmen.
- Swim alongside whale sharks – Did you know that whale sharks aren’t actually sharks? In fact, they’re the largest fish in the world, and you can even swim with whale sharks in Playa del Carmen! You will need to head a little way offshore before you can though, which is why I recommend this full-day whale shark tour, which includes all transportation and lunch!
- Go shopping – Fifth Avenue is a super popular pedestrian street full of shops, boutiques, and markets. If you’re looking for souvenirs or fancy treating yourself to a new holiday get-up, this is the place to be. The Playa del Carmen Flea Market is my top pick for budget gifts and handicrafts, and Quinta Alegría Shopping Mall is your one-stop shop for international brands.

Where to Stay in Playa del Carmen
There are a TON of great places to stay in Playa del Carmen, so it can be a bit difficult knowing where to even begin! The hotels here cater to all kinds of budgets, age ranges, and more, so to help give you a good overview, I’ve included some of my favorites below:
Che Playa Hostel and Bar – $
Visiting Playa del Carmen doesn’t have to be super expensive! In fact, for those traveling on a budget, I’d highly recommend Che Playa Hostel and Bar, which is an adult-only hostel and one of the best in town!
It’s really well-located right in the heart of Playa del Carmen and even has its own rooftop pool and bar. While it’s nothing crazy, this gives it a really chilled-out social atmosphere and the clean facilities and helpful staff make the whole stay a blast.
Soho Playa Hotel – $$
Whenever I’m visiting on a moderate budget and don’t fancy staying in a resort, my personal pick is the Soho Playa Hotel, which I’ve visited a couple of times now and is a real gem! It’s just a stone’s throw away from the beach, has its own pool, and all rates include free breakfast. Perfect for filling up before a day out ATVing.
The rooms here are also super modern and are really clean – a one-night stay here starts at $94 USD per night and can be booked online here.
The Palm at Playa – $$
The Palm at Playa is a lot like the Soho Playa Hotel – it’s in a similar price range, but I’d say it’s a little bit more on the luxury end. It’s also located right near the beach and has its own on-site restaurant, which blends local flavors with a European twist – I recommend the amazing fish tacos!
The rooftop palm garden is the perfect retreat when it’s super hot out, take it from me that this feels like a luxury hotel without the price tag. Rooms here start at $85 USD per night and for the best price, it’s best to book online in advance.
El Taj Oceanfront and Beachside Condo Hotel – $$$
If budget isn’t an issue for you, then the luxury world of hotels at Playa del Carmen is at your fingertips! When it comes to enjoying out-of-this-world hospitality and comfort, El Taj Oceanfront and Beachside Condo Hotel really can’t be topped. With its very own infinity pool and elegant suites, every corner of this hotel is Instagram-worthy!
El Taj’s ASI restaurant serves delicious gourmet food that dazzles the taste buds, and if you’re feeling ultra-relaxed in your room, you can request the chef to come to your suite and prepare your meals there! While I haven’t personally been here, you can bet that this is on my bucket list.
A one-night stay at El Taj starts at $185 USD, which I think is actually pretty good value considering all the luxuries that come with it! To snag the best rooms, I’d suggest checking your dates and booking your stay online here.
Don’t get Caught without Travel Insurance!
We never travel without travel insurance! We’ve had a few instances during our travels when one of us has ended up in the hospital, and travel insurance has saved us thousands of dollars over the years!
SafetyWing is our go-to insurance, we both have policies with them whenever we travel.
They offer travel medical insurance that’s super affordable (only $45 USD per 4 weeks!)The only thing to note is that the insurance must be purchased once you’ve left your home country – we typically buy it as soon as we land at the airport.
We’ve personally used SafetyWing for many different trips, and we’ve been reimbursed for countless expenses when we’ve fallen ill. SafetyWing even covered our flights back to Canada in full when the pandemic first happened (when last-minute flights before the borders closed were super expensive!) While most travel insurance companies left people stranded, SafetyWing fully reimbursed us for our last-minute, pricey flights!
Also, because it is so affordable, there really is no excuse not to take out a policy. Check prices and get a quote online here with SafetyWing (you can even take out a policy if you’re already traveling!)
