First up on the list: Ratio Coffee and Pastry! My sweet tooth was itching when we walked into  this Vernon café, and I needed to get my hands on some dessert fast – and boy am I glad we picked this place! The smell of sweet pastries and fresh coffee hit you as soon as you walk through the door. The shelf was filled with enticing baked delicacies to buy, it was so hard to choose which one to taste first!

I eventually decided on their highly recommended doughnuts. They were delicious! Just enough sweetness and probably the freshest doughnut I’ve ever eaten. In addition, they have “themed” pastry days. For example, Friday is Doughnut Friday. You will need to get your order in on time as these doughnuts fly!  The coffee here is superb too.

The menu at Ratio Coffee and Pastry offers just enough variety. Dan can never refuse a pizza, especially one with an exciting combination. He decided on the “Beet and Arugula”, and his facial expression after the first bite said it all – it was a hit!

I loved this location. This café is located in an old train station in the heart of Vernon, and the interior has a minimalist but chic feel. The staff is friendly and helpful. There is a trendy and upbeat vibe about this cafe, which we really enjoyed. If you are a pastry fan, particularly a doughnut fan, you simply have to visit this Vernon coffee shop!

Average cost per meal: $15-20 CAD

Why we love it: Heartwarming food alongside excellent hospitality

Hours: Wednesday – Sunday 8:30 am – 3 pm

Next up on the list, Eatology. This downtown corner café in Vernon is the place to visit for traditional home-style food with a personal creative twist. The owner is passionate about food that follows the philosophy of “Food is Fuel, but dining is an experience” which I loved. You can definitely tell that he takes this approach seriously when you eat at this place! It’s the ideal restaurant in Vernon to enjoy hearty nostalgic meals with an individual and authentic touch.

Since it was morning when Dan and I arrived, we explored their breakfast menu. So many delicious options! My eyes promptly made their way to the Buttermilk Pancakes, and Dan opted for an Eggs Benny with pulled pork. My pancakes were SO fluffy! Like, seriously, melt-in-your-mouth soft. The tartness of the added blueberries created a perfect balance of sweet meets sour in one bite. So yummy!

Dans’ Eggs Benny was served hot, and his eggs were made just right.  The pulled pork option was a refreshing change from a traditional eggs benedict with ham. Also, the hash browns were flavorsome with just enough crunch.  I may or may not have stolen a few bites off his plate!

The physical warmth of this Vernon Coffee shop is met with the friendly and helpful staff. The tasteful interior has a “diner” feel with cozy cubicles so you can enjoy your meal with sunbeams streaming through the window. In addition, you will never be in a hurry to leave as you sip away on coffee and tea refills.

A stop at this coffee shop is an ideal way to ease into your morning before a day of exploring Vernon!

Why we love it:  A board game haven

Your board game haven awaits at The Boarding House! As you walk into this unique corner café, you’ll feel like you’ve come to a library with all the shelves that line the walls. However, all the shelves are packed with board games instead of books!

The owners of this delightful downtown café are huge board game enthusiasts and have incorporated that into the decor and feel of this café.  Their idea was to create a family space atmosphere where you can meet to relax and engage for some quality one-on-one time.

This clean and organized café space also has a great food selection to refuel you in between games. There’s a superb selection of coffee, tea, and milkshakes. A small yet satisfying, café style menu has everything from a grilled cheese sandwich to crispy nachos with all the trimmings.

What we loved most about this entertaining café were the sweet menu options. Add a candy bowl of gummies, popcorn, or cookies to enjoy during your board game and you are set to go! A family game night is never complete without snacks.

There is a comfy couch section to get settled in as time ticks by. Dan and I tucked into the nachos and salsa before indulging in some board game amusement. Of course, they hit the spot just right, with extra sour cream and guacamole.

The variety of board games is astonishing. With over 200 game titles, I doubt you would have played them all! You can also purchase board games here too. We played a few different games together and ordered some snacks to go along with our game. And yes, I consumed our entire candy bowl!

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in this “old-school gaming” environment. It’s no surprise why this made the list of the best cafes in Vernon!

Why we love it:  specialty Latte, Mocha, Chai, and Matcha tea

This home away from home Vernon café is a must-visit. As you approach the door at Bean to Cup Coffee House, your senses are met with the inviting aroma of freshly ground coffee beans. Upon entering, be prepared to be greeted with warm and friendly smiles.

The décor of Bean to Cup Coffee House has a classic coffee house feel, with a cozy fireplace that just invites you in. The warmth of this cafe will surely appeal to you on those extra chilly snowy days in Vernon!

I learned that Bean to Cup is actually the only specialty coffee bar in North Okanagan roasting its own beans. I was recommended the coconut latte, which I promptly ordered, and oh my soul! It was so smooth, creamy, rich, and aromatic. An excellent coffee drinking experience and no surprise why it was recommended!

The menu offers classic-style café food, with a few other unique options. My Thai Mango Chicken Wrap really burst with flavor.  Dan ordered the Pesto Chicken Panini, which was also very tasty. We made sure to leave room for dessert and another specialty hot drink to wash down our meals. I enjoyed a hot matcha tea paired with a Blueberry Strudel. The two flavors blended well together and it has definitely convinced me to visit this place again to order another one.

There truly is a “homey” feel to this café. It is clear the owners and staff are passionate about what they do and share their enthusiasm with their customers, which is really the feel we look for when visiting local cafés. Not only are they hospitable, but they go the extra mile with their coffee, food, and baked goods.

You are going to want to indulge to the fullest at Bean to Cup Coffee, so come hungry! Your taste buds will thank you.

Our final selection of best cafés in Vernon  takes you to Bugaboos Bakery and Café at the Silver Star Ski Resort. This majestic mountain resort is popular amongst both travelers to Vernon and BC locals. If you’re staying close to the resort while visiting Vernon, we recommend stopping to check this place out. I promise your taste buds will thank you for the trip!

The owner of this well-established idyllic café has roots in Holland and is passionate about “real food” and fresh, healthy ingredients. He has elegantly combined his knowledge of Dutch and Canadian pastry pleasures to create Bugaboos Bakery and Café, and it’s been a huge hit.

This café is beautifully themed alongside the resort and surroundings, and the ambiance is warm and inviting. Like many others, as you walk into this café, you’ll have no choice but to pause and inhale freshly baked pastry deliciousness!

My favorite part of this café is the fantastic pastry menu. My inner sweet tooth fairy promptly escaped and ordered their famous “Banana Eclair”.

Dan reminded me I was actually hungry, so perhaps a hearty meal would be an excellent idea before a sweet treat. He ordered a Brie Tomato Croissant, and I ordered Hungarian Beef Goulash. The croissant was baked to crumbling perfection, and the ingredients fresh and delicious. My beef goulash was nourishing and full of flavor!

We both opted for a hot chocolate after our meals, which was great – very velvety and not too rich.  I was so full after my hearty meal, so I only ate a bit of my banana eclair. This was much to Dan’s delight since he didn’t hesitate to eat the rest! The eclair was an extraordinary pastry with real banana and fresh cream – so good!

The friendly service you get here coupled with the scenic views of the resort while you eat your delicious meal and pastries is enough to make me make the drive here any time I’m in Vernon.

We had an all-around incredible experience at Bugaboo Bakery, it’s truly made its way into our hearts and onto the list of the best cafés in Vernon!
