We’ve spent time exploring this coastal gem, and it quickly became one of our favorite spots in Croatia. With its mix of ancient history, stunning waterfront views, and unique attractions (where else can you hear the sea play music?), Zadar has a little bit of everything. Whether you’re into island hopping, discovering Roman ruins, or just indulging in incredible food, this city delivers.

Zadar is an easy city to navigate, especially on foot, but knowing a few local tips will help make your trip feel a lot smoother.

Important Tip: Visit in shoulder season and explore on foot! 

Visit in shoulder season: To avoid higher prices, crowds, and the intense summer heat, we recommend visiting in late May or early September. Temperatures are comfortable, and you’ll have a more relaxed town atmosphere. Prices tend to climb in the height of the tourist season (July and August).

Choose to walk in the immediate area of Zadar: Old Town is very walkable, so booking your hotel near Old Town is the right move! Many of the tours we mention offer round-trip transportation, but if you do want to venture a little farther, Uber and Lyft are widely used and super accessible! 

Carry some cash for smaller vendors and tips: Croatia uses the Euro, and you can use a credit card in most places, but it’s good to keep some cash on hand for tipping or if you’re wandering vendors at the market in Old Town. 

How I Would Spend 2 Days in Zadar

Zadar has a little bit of everything. Whether you’re into island hopping, discovering Roman ruins, or just indulging in incredible food, the city is a beautiful place to wander. This is how we would spend our time there if we only had two days to explore! 

Day 1: Kickstart your vacation with a hearty breakfast before heading out for a speedboat island-hopping adventure. In the afternoon, explore the Old Town, catch the sunset at Zadar’s Sea Organ, and finish the day with some local seafood at a lovely restaurant. 

Day 2: Today, you have two options. Head off on a full-day trip to Plitvice Lakes National Park or spend the day sightseeing, relaxing at the beach, tasting your way around Zadar, and enjoying a romantic sunset cruise before (or after) dinner at one of the finest restaurants in town.

Things to do in Zadar, Croatia

1. Learn about Zadar’s historic sights on a walking tour

Sightseeing might sound like a simple way to explore a city, but this walking tour feels like stepping straight into Zadar’s past. You’ll wander through Roman ruins, medieval churches, and even modern art installations—all while uncovering stories that brought the city to life.

To kick things off, you’ll start at the Greeting to the Sun, where the solar-powered display lights up beneath your feet. As the colors shift and pulse under you, it feels like you’re standing on a portal to another world—Zadar’s way of blending the past with the future.

From there, you’ll stroll over to the Sea Organ, listening to the waves “play” music through the underground pipes. The mix of nature and design is eerie but so mesmerizing. 

Next, you’ll walk through the remains of Zadar’s Roman Forum and stand beneath the grand Land Gate; you can almost picture the city as it was centuries ago. History feels alive here, like you’ve stepped right into it.

At the end of the tour, you’ll get a quick Maraschino tasting. Turns out Zadar has a knack for making cherry liqueur, too!

2. Visit Plitvice Lakes National Park

Spending the day at Plitvice Lakes felt like stepping into a postcard, with cascading waterfalls, turquoise waters, and lush greenery in every direction. The best part? This guided tour from Zadar made the whole experience easy, so all we had to do was sit back and enjoy it.

The day started with a scenic drive through the Croatian countryside, with our guide, Jelena, sharing fun facts and stories about the region—her knowledge and enthusiasm turned the ride into an adventure of its own.

Once we arrived, we had four hours to explore the upper and lower waterfalls, following wooden pathways that wound through the park. Every turn revealed another unreal view, from hidden caves and trickling streams to wide-open lakes reflecting the sky.

Just when our legs needed a break, we hopped on a relaxing train ride followed by a peaceful boat trip across the lake. Drifting past waterfalls and scenic shores was the perfect chance to appreciate the park from a whole new perspective.

Back in Zadar, the experience wasn’t over yet—this tour included an optional Old Town walking tour, which was a great way to learn more about the city while wandering through its charming streets, ancient ruins, and lively squares. It was the ideal way to wind down after an adventure-filled day! 

If you’re in Zadar, this day trip is a no-brainer. So, lace up your walking shoes and get ready for one of the best nature escapes in Croatia!

3. Take a swim at Kolovare Beach

If you’re looking for an easy beach day just minutes from Zadar’s Old Town, Kolovare Beach is hard to beat. As the city’s most popular beach, it’s where both locals and visitors come to cool off in the crystal-clear Adriatic without venturing far from the historic center. It’s easy to spend a relaxing afternoon here before strolling back into Old Town for dinner and an evening along the waterfront.

Kolovare Beach has everything you need for a comfortable day by the sea, including showers, changing rooms, restrooms, and a few cafés and snack bars nearby. The beach is mostly pebbles rather than sand, so bringing a pair of water shoes will make getting in and out of the water much more comfortable. I also like to arrive in the mid-morning with a good book to snag a shady spot before it gets too busy.

When you’re ready to cool off, the calm water is perfect for swimming, and you can even rent a kayak if you’d rather explore the coastline. Whether you’re looking to spend a few hours relaxing or want an easy break from sightseeing, Kolovare Beach is the perfect place to enjoy the Adriatic without ever leaving the city.

4. Go island hopping on a speedboat

Island-hopping around Zadar was one of the best ways to experience Croatia’s coastline, and this small-group speedboat tour made it even better. With swimming, snorkeling, and plenty of free time to explore, it offered just the right mix of adventure and relaxation. 

We set off from Zadar, and after a quick ride across the Adriatic, we anchored in the crystal-clear waters of Blue Bay Otrić. Some of us swam and snorkeled among the fish, while others stayed on board, soaking up the sun with a cold drink. Of course, we couldn’t resist jumping in—the water was way too inviting!

Next, we stopped at Ošljak, Croatia’s smallest inhabited island, where we could hike to the top for an incredible view. The short but steep climb led through a peaceful forest of ancient olive trees, and the summit rewarded us with a stunning panorama of the Adriatic and nearby islands.

The final stop in Preko had lots of options—lounging on the beach, swimming to Galevac islet, or wandering through town. We couldn’t resist a coffee stop by the water, sipping espresso as we soaked up the easygoing island vibe. It was the perfect way to wind down before hopping back on the boat.

This trip is a great choice whether you’re exploring solo, with friends, or family. Just keep in mind that docking fees and children’s tickets are charged separately. If you’re looking for a fun, stress-free way to experience Zadar’s islands, this boat tour is well worth it!

5. Spend a sunset at The Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun

Even if you’ve already seen the Sea Organ and Greeting to the Sun during the day, this is one experience that absolutely deserves a return visit at sunset. In fact, it’s when this part of Zadar feels most magical. As the light fades, the waterfront fills with people settling onto the stone steps, and the city slowly shifts into a shared moment of music, light, and sea.

The Sea Organ comes alive as waves push air through its underwater pipes, creating soft, hypnotic tones that rise and fall with the water. Just a few steps away, the Greeting to the Sun begins to glow, its solar-powered panels slowly building into a subtle, synchronized light show as night takes over.

Together, they transform Zadar’s waterfront into something that feels both simple and unforgettable. It’s not flashy or overdone—it’s just the sea, the light, and everyone gathered there all blending into one easy moment.

I like to grab a gelato from a local shop and sit on the Sea Organ steps while the sun goes down. Somehow it tastes better here, with the salt in the air and the sound of the waves underneath you.

6. See more of Zadar on a Tuk Tuk tour

Cruising through Zadar in an eco-friendly tuk-tuk is the ultimate way to cover a lot of ground without missing the city’s charm. This private tour is all about experiencing the city from a fresh perspective, stopping at iconic landmarks and hidden local spots that buses and cars just can’t reach.

What really makes the tour special is the guides. Their knowledge and enthusiasm bring Zadar’s history to life, from fascinating stories about the Roman Forum to local legends surrounding the mysterious Zadar Sphinx. They know all the best viewpoints and hidden gems, making sure every stop is more than just a quick photo op.

You’ll start with a scenic ride along Kolovare Beach, passing the historic Land City Gates before heading into the heart of the Old Town. Riding through the city like this feels effortless, and you’ll love being able to take in the views without rushing from place to place.

One of the best stops is the Sea Organ, where you’ll listen to the waves create their own hauntingly beautiful music. Right next to it, the Greeting to the Sun adds another unique element to the waterfront, with its solar-powered panels creating an eye-catching display that becomes especially impressive after dark.

7. Go on a kayak adventure to Dugi Otok Island

Kayaking around Dugi Otok is the kind of adventure that will pull you into the moment completely. With crystal-clear waters, hidden caves, and dramatic cliffs, this private kayaking tour feels like uncovering a secret side of Croatia far from the usual crowds.

You’ll start with a ferry ride from Zadar to the island (€4–6, so bring cash), where you’ll meet your guide and settle in for a day of non-stop sightseeing.

First up is Brbinjscica Bay, a rugged coastline with towering cliffs, a hidden sea cave, and a natural pool called the “Dragon Eye”—named for its deep, circular shape that almost looks like a mythical creature watching from below. You will paddle through calm waters, snorkel in the cave, and have the option of cliff jumping! What better time to cliff jump than off the coast of Croatia?

After a lunch break near the Veli Rat lighthouse (this is at your own expense), you’ll kayak to the shipwreck of “Michele,” where you’ll dock and jump in to snorkel around the eerie remains. 

Finally, you’ll wrap up at Sakarun Beach, a stunning white-sand stretch where you’ll learn a local game called Picigin. Keeping the ball in the air while splashing in shallow water is way harder than it looks, but so much fun!

Paddling through secluded bays and snorkeling over a shipwreck is an unforgettable way to experience Croatia’s coastline. With epic scenery and crystal-clear waters packed with adventure, this tour is a must-do in Zadar!

8. Go Shopping on Kalelarga & Old Town

Kalelarga is the main pedestrian street running through the heart of Zadar’s Old Town, and it’s one of those places you’ll likely end up walking more than once. It’s lined with cafés, small shops, and gelaterias, and even when it’s busy, it has a relaxed rhythm as people drift slowly between stops. This portion of Old Town is my favorite place to pick up unique local items like Croatian olive oils and their famous Paski (Pag Island sheep cheese). 

Along the street, you’ll see so many locals and visitors snacking on gelato, enjoying the surroundings—it’s such a sweet way to experience the town’s specific flavor. You’ll find a few specialty olive oil shops that offer tastings before purchase- this was one of my favorite things to explore. 

At the eastern edge of Kalelarga, you can experience a traditional Croatian market with seasonal produce, fresh fish, and handmade items. I had to snag a few lavender sachets to bring home! Make sure you bring a little extra cash for the vendors and head there early to get the freshest picks! 

9. Explore Krka National Park

You can’t spend time in Zadar and not make room for Krka National Park! It’s one of the most beautiful nature escapes in the area, with emerald water, leafy boardwalks, and waterfalls that look like something out of a movie. This afternoon tour is a great way to do it too, because you get all the wow moments without sacrificing your entire day.

The trip starts with a scenic drive out to Skradin, a charming little riverside town that feels instantly relaxing. You’ll have around 90 minutes here to wander the streets, grab a gelato or coffee, or even sneak in a quick swim at the beach if the weather’s on your side. It’s a lovely bonus that makes the day feel more like a mini getaway than a straight sightseeing mission.

Next up is the wooden boat cruise into the park. This part is such a vibe! Gliding along the Krka River with that bright green water and the trees closing in around you really builds the excitement.

Once you arrive, your guide leads you through the park and out onto the raised boardwalks around Skradinski Buk, Krka’s headline waterfall. The cascades are stunning up close, and the walking route is easy, scenic, and packed with photo spots.

Best of all, it’s completely hassle-free. Transport, entrance fee, and a guide are all included, so you can just show up and enjoy the waterfalls.

10. Taste your way around Zadar

Eating our way through Zadar was one of the best experiences of our trip! This small-group food tour wasn’t just about tasting incredible local dishes—it was about discovering the culture, history, and traditions behind them. From bustling markets to cozy restaurants, every stop revealed a new layer of Croatian cuisine.

Our guide, Andrea, was fantastic! She took us to a mix of local shops, open-air market stalls, and restaurants, giving us a well-rounded taste of Zadar’s food scene.

We kicked things off with Soparnik, a flaky, garlicky pie from the Zadar hinterland that instantly won us over. From there, we wandered through the city market, where the scent of ripe fruit filled the air as we stopped for bites along the way.

At our favorite stop, we sampled different olive oils while learning how deeply olives are woven into Dalmatian life. Tasting the rich, peppery flavors, we finally understood why locals are so passionate about their olive trees!

No Croatian food tour is complete without prosciutto and wine, and this one didn’t disappoint. We savored locally cured prosciutto, followed by a glass of wine featured on the menus of some of the world’s finest restaurants. Finally, we ended on a sweet note at a pastry shop, indulging in delicious local cakes.

11. Spend a day exploring Kornati National Park by boat

Sailing through the Kornati Islands feels like stepping into a world of rugged cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and hidden coves waiting to be explored. This small-group boat tour is an incredible way to experience the national park without crowds, stopping at off-the-radar spots bigger tour boats miss.

This full-day boat tour makes visiting Kornati really easy, because so much is already included. You’ll leave from Zadar in the morning, enjoy breakfast on board, and spend the day cruising past islands, swimming in beautiful bays, and soaking up those rocky, wild-looking coastal views.

One of the big highlights is stopping at Levrnaka Island, where you’ll have time to swim and enjoy the water. You’ll also visit the Fortress of Tureta, which adds a bit of history to the day instead of making it just a swim and sunbathe trip. We like that balance, because it keeps the tour interesting without taking away from the easygoing island-hopping feel.

Lunch is included too, along with drinks, fresh fruit, and snorkeling equipment, so you don’t need to organize much beyond bringing your swimsuit, towel, and walking shoes. The group is capped at 22 travelers, which also helps it feel more personal than a huge boat excursion.

If you want a full day on the water with swimming, snorkeling, island views, and very little planning required, this Kornati National Park boat trip is a fantastic one to book.

12. Visit the Museum of Ancient Glass

If you are looking for something a little different while exploring Zadar, the Museum of Ancient Glass is a refreshing change of pace from the city’s busier attractions! Located in the Cosmacensi Palace (a historic beauty built in 1877), the museum overlooks the harbor, making it feel calm and airy from the moment you walk in. Instead of endless rows of artifacts, you’ll wander through exhibits filled with delicate Roman glass pieces that have survived for thousands of years.

Entry is typically around €5–7 for adults, with reduced tickets for students and children, and guided tours are available if you want a more in-depth experience.

You’ll see tiny perfume bottles, drinking glasses, decorative vases, beads, and everyday objects that give a glimpse into what life looked like centuries ago. There are so many variations of colored glass and uses. It’s truly fascinating to see how much detail and craftsmanship went into everyday objects thousands of years ago! 

One of the best parts of visiting is catching a live glassblowing demonstration, which runs Monday to Friday from 9 am to 2 pm, and on Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm. Watching molten glass transform into something elegant in minutes adds a whole new appreciation for the pieces displayed throughout the museum.

Where to Stay in Zadar, Croatia

Now that you have a full itinerary of Zadar’s top activities, you need somewhere comfortable to stay! We personally loved staying in the Old Town as it puts you close to the best things to do and the area is super charming. Here are three excellent hotel options for those with a range of budgets: 

Luxury – $$$

Bastion Heritage Hotel – Relais & Châteaux is my top pick for a luxury stay! This hotel is in Old Town Zadar, close to the water and the top restaurants in the city. They offer standard hotel rooms or suites, all individually decorated in a gorgeous Art Deco design. You can relax at the spa and wellness center, too!

Rooms are available for around €250 per night and can be reserved on Booking.com.

Mid-range – $$

Situated in the heart of Zadar’s Old Town, Central Apartments Integrated Hotel is a great moderate-budget hotel! They offer apartment-style rooms equipped with a kitchen and seating area. You can choose between studio or one-bedroom apartments, and each has its own unique style and charm. 

Rooms start as low as €150 per night and can be reserved on Booking.com. 

Budget – $

Accommodation Gina is a budget-friendly option that has a very homey vibe. It’s located in the Old Town, just a 10-minute walk from the beach. They offer apartments equipped with a kitchen and lounge area or standard rooms if you’re looking for something smaller.
