How to Spend FOUR DAYS in Koh Samui, Thailand: The Best 4-Day Itinerary

Planning a trip to Koh Samui? You’re in for a real treat! 

This little island in the Gulf of Thailand has got it all: adventure, chilled beach vibes, breathtaking scenery… and don’t even get us started on the food! 

Like any trip to Thailand, you might find yourself staring at a long list of must-dos and wondering how on earth you’re supposed to fit it all into a single stay. We felt the same way on our first trip to Koh Samui. But luckily for you, we’ve put together this 4-day itinerary that hits all the highlights (with plenty of time to relax and recharge)! 

So are you ready to see what all the fuss is about? Let’s go! 

Itinerary Overview

Koh Samui is a lot bigger and more spread out than most people expect, so it works best if you pick one base and explore from there. For a first trip, we recommend staying in Chaweng since it’s central and super convenient for tour pickups. Plus, it’s packed with great restaurants and bars, so you’ll never have to venture far for a plate of pad thai or a sunset cocktail.

For getting around, Grab is our go-to for quick rides, especially for dinner runs or evening outings. You’ll also find plenty of taxis, songthaews (those red shared trucks that run along the main roads), and of course, the option to book a private driver for the day.

If you’re planning a full sightseeing loop, hiring a private driver is by far the easiest, most stress-free choice. Renting a scooter or car gives you the most freedom, but make sure you’re confident with navigating busy, steep, and sometimes unpredictable roads.

With this in mind, here’s exactly how we recommend spending four perfect days in Koh Samui:  

Day 1: Kick things off with a private tour to get your bearings and tick a few landmarks off your bucket list, then relax in Chaweng (maybe a swim, maybe a nap) before sitting down for your first proper Thai dinner of the trip.

Day 2: Spend the morning meeting Koh Samui’s gentle giants at an ethical elephant sanctuary, then meander through the charming streets and beachfront bars of Fisherman’s Village.

Day 3: This is your big adventure day! Hop on a speedboat and spend the day exploring the jaw-dropping Ang Thong Marine Park. You’ll also have opportunities for snorkeling and kayaking through hidden lagoons. 

Day 4: Pick your perfect send-off with either a Thai cooking class or a jungle ATV tour. Then, head to Lamai for one last stroll on the beach before a panoramic sunset dinner! 

Day 1

Breakfast – The Bagel

For your very first breakfast, you absolutely have to hit up The Bagel. This little spot is perfect for a quick, filling, and delicious breakfast, which you’ll definitely need before a full day of exploring. 

We’re big fans of this place because everything is baked fresh each morning (we could smell the bagels from the street!). Naturally, we had to try one for ourselves, so we went with the smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel, and it really hit the spot! They also make great smoothies, açaí-style bowls, and strong coffee to go if you need your caffeine fix. 

This cafe does get pretty busy, so aim to get there as close to opening time as possible (8 am sharp) to make sure you get back to your hotel for your tour pickup around 9:30 or 10 am! 

Morning/Early Afternoon – Explore Koh Samui your way

After breakfast, it’s time to start exploring the island! One of the easiest ways to see Koh Samui’s top sights is on this private and customizable sightseeing tour, which takes all the stress out of planning and transportation.

We recommend booking the 4- or 6-hour option and starting around 9:30–10 am, which gives you plenty of time to explore before finishing around 2–4 pm, depending on the length you choose. The tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off, and you’ll be chauffeured around the island in a spacious, air-conditioned minivan, which is much more relaxing than navigating busy roads yourself.

Since the tour is fully customizable, you get to pick the stops that sound most exciting to you. Many people include highlights like the iconic Big Buddha Temple, the colorful Wat Plai Laem, and the gorgeous Lad Koh Viewpoint with sweeping coastal views. You can also add waterfall stops if you want a refreshing break surrounded by the jungle.

There’s even time to stop for lunch along the way, so the whole day feels relaxed and flexible instead of rushed.

One thing we especially love is how flexible this tour is. Instead of being locked into a rigid schedule, you can explore Koh Samui’s highlights at your own pace while your guide shares stories about Thai culture, history, and local food spots along the way. It’s a fantastic way to get oriented and see a lot of the island in just half a day!

Afternoon – Reset and recharge in Chaweng

After your tour finishes, anywhere from around 2 to 4 pm, it’s time to fully ease yourself into island mode. 

Head back to your hotel for a swim to cool off (or take a nap, you’ve earned it!). If you still have some energy, you can even take a walk down to Chaweng Beach. We love this beach because it’s so lively and convenient. Just grab a drink from a beach bar, find a lounge chair, and let the ocean breeze do its thing. 

If you’ve forgotten any essentials (like sunscreen or a waterproof phone pouch), now is also a good time to swing by Central Festival Samui and grab whatever you need. 

Dinner – Thai Kitchen

For dinner, make your way to Thai Kitchen. As the name suggests, this place does incredible, authentic Thai food. It also feels like a real local spot, not just a touristy resort restaurant with inflated prices. 

We arrived around 7 pm, and the place was already buzzing, which is always a good sign. If you’re not quite sure what to order, you can’t go wrong with a Thai green curry or pad thai. Both are bursting with flavor and the perfect introduction to Thai cuisine.

Evening – Soak up Chaweng’s evening atmosphere

After dinner, head out for a bit of a walk along Chaweng Beach and the main strip. This part of town really comes alive after sunset, so it’s worth staying out to take it all in. 

Also, no trip to Chaweng would be complete without visiting the famous Night Market. So if you’re lucky and it’s Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, then definitely drop by! We loved browsing the stalls to look at all the souvenirs and sweet treats. Keep an eye out for the mango sticky rice or the fresh coconut ice cream (it’s delicious)!

Day 2

Morning – Meet the gentle giants at an ethical elephant sanctuary

Start day two bright and early with this ethical elephant sanctuary tour, which is easily one of the most meaningful experiences you can have in Koh Samui.

The tour starts around 8 am and lasts about 4 hours, so you’ll finish up around 12 pm, leaving plenty of time for more exploring later in the day. After pickup, you’ll head to one of the most ethical elephant sanctuaries in Thailand, where rescued elephants roam freely in a safe, natural environment.

During the visit, you’ll learn all about the elephants’ stories, their behavior, and how the sanctuary cares for them. One of the highlights is getting to help prepare food and feed the elephants, which is such a special way to interact with them while still respecting their space. We especially loved that the experience focuses on education and conservation, rather than riding or forced interactions.

It’s also clear how dedicated the team here is to the elephants’ well-being, and visitors leave with a much deeper understanding of these incredible animals.

At the end of the visit, you’ll enjoy a delicious vegetarian lunch at the sanctuary before heading back around noon. With hundreds of 5-star reviews, this tour is a must-do in Koh Samui and a truly special way to connect with these gentle giants while supporting ethical conservation.

Lunch – The Hut Cafe

After the sanctuary, you’ll probably be ready for a more relaxed lunch. We recommend heading to The Hut Cafe, which is a bit of a hidden gem tucked away from the main drag (just a 5-minute taxi ride or 25-minute walk away from the elephant sanctuary). Since it opens at noon, the timing works out perfectly after your morning tour ends.

We absolutely adored this place for its super-friendly service and delicious, homemade Thai food. It’s such a welcoming spot that’s perfect for a casual midday meal. We tried the massaman curry, and it was one of the best we had on the island. Don’t worry about making a reservation, just show up and grab a table! 

Afternoon – Get to know Koh Samui’s famous fisherman’s village

After lunch, take a Grab or a taxi over to Fisherman’s Village in Bophut. This area has a completely different vibe from Chaweng. It’s a little slower and a little more compact, with a charming waterfront lined with old wooden shophouses, boutiques, and restaurants right on the sand. It’s the perfect place to wander around and grab a coffee or drink after lunch. 

Here are a few of our favorite ways to spend an afternoon here:

• Stroll along the shorefront: You can’t come to Fisherman’s Village and not take a walk along the beach to see the colorful longtail boats bobbing in the water. We loved just walking along the sand and pausing for photos in the shady spots.

• Go shopping: There are some genuinely lovely little shops here. We especially liked Chandra Boutique and Saona Collection for unique clothing and accessories that feel a bit more special than your typical market finds. It’s a great place to pick up something you’ll actually wear again at home.

• Meet some capybaras: This was a surprise find for us! CapyBARa Cafe is part café, part mini petting zoo, and yes, you really can hang out with capybaras. We paid the small entrance fee and got to spend time with capybaras, meerkats, and guinea pigs. It was so unexpected and honestly just really cute.

• Enjoy a massage: There is no shortage of great massage places in Fisherman’s Village. We treated ourselves to a foot massage at Urban Thai, which faces the beach and has an incredibly calming atmosphere. It was the perfect way to relax after a morning of walking. Our foot massage was only 399 THB (around $13), but you can also check out their website to browse their full menu of treatments or see the latest pricing before you go.

Dinner – The Thai Tapas

For dinner tonight, you’ve got to try the Thai Tapas. We absolutely loved this place because it serves Thai flavors in small, shareable plates, so you can try a bit of everything! 

We wanted a good mix of things, so we went with the green curry (my personal favorite), the sea bass, and a creative duck dish. Everything we had was beautifully presented, and honestly, we would order all three again in a heartbeat! If you love fish, the catch of the day is always a good option, too. 

This particular spot is particularly popular, so we recommend making a reservation via their Facebook page just to be safe! 

Evening – Relax at a beachfront bar

Fisherman’s Village is such an easy place to wind down for the night. 

If you’re in the mood for a casual nightcap, there are a few great options, but our favorite is Coco Tam’s. It’s technically a restaurant, but they have huge beanbags right on the sand where you can relax with a cocktail. We loved the laid-back, chill vibe here. Another option is Garnish.Samui, which serves absolutely gorgeous cocktails with equally gorgeous ocean views.

Day 3

Full-day – Spend the day snorkeling, sightseeing, and soaking up Ang Thong

On day three, set out on this full-day cruise to Angthong National Marine Park, a stunning collection of islands that easily ranks as one of the best day trips from Koh Samui.

The tour starts at 9 am and lasts about 8.5 hours, so you’ll be back around 5:30 pm after a long day exploring the islands. After pickup, you’ll cruise out past Samui’s northern coast toward Angthong, where dozens of jungle-covered islands rise out of turquoise water, with limestone cliffs, hidden coves, and viewpoints that almost look too perfect to be real.

Once you arrive in the marine park, the fun begins with snorkeling in calm, clear water. Guides are right there in the water with you, which makes it easy, whether you’re an experienced snorkeler or trying it for the first time. Keep an eye out for colorful fish!

As the boat weaves between islands, the scenery keeps getting better. Towering limestone cliffs and emerald-green islands surround you—it’s hard not to reach for your camera every few minutes. 

Midday, you’ll stop on a quiet beach for lunch, which feels like a perfect reset before the afternoon adventures. Afterward, you can relax in the shade or grab a kayak and paddle along the coastline, exploring rocky overhangs and hidden corners of the islands.

The grand finale is Emerald Lake, where a short uphill walk leads to an incredible viewpoint overlooking the lagoon and the surrounding archipelago. It’s the kind of view that makes the whole day feel completely worth it. After soaking it all in, you’ll cruise back to Koh Samui with plenty of time to relax and reminisce about the day’s adventures.

Dinner/Evening – Day & Night of Koh Samui

After a full day out on the water, you’ll probably be craving an easy and fun dinner. The perfect spot for that is Day & Night of Koh Samui, which is a cool, vintage-style restaurant in central Chaweng with endless photo opportunities. For food, you can expect a mix of Thai and Western cuisine. We tried their pizza, and it was so needed after a day of swimming and snorkeling!  

This spot is super popular with tourists and locals, especially in the evenings, so it’s worth making a reservation ahead of time to avoid waiting around when you’re tired and hungry.

Day 4

Breakfast – Delish Cafe & Restaurant

For your final morning, keep things relaxed at Delish Cafe & Restaurant. It’s fresh, unfussy, and exactly the kind of spot you’d want for an easy start to the day.

The menu is surprisingly extensive, with things like pastries, smoothie bowls, and hearty cooked breakfast plates. There are also plenty of veggie-friendly options, too, which we always appreciate. And of course, the coffee is excellent (the cafe wouldn’t make this itinerary if it wasn’t!). 

Similar to other cafes in the area, Delish opens at 8 am, which gives you plenty of time to enjoy your breakfast without rushing before your morning tour or activity. 

Morning – Option 1: Learn to cook like a local

After breakfast, one fun option for your final morning is this farm-to-table Thai cooking class with Chef Lat, which is perfect if you want to take a little piece of Thailand home with you.

The class starts at 10 am and lasts about 4 hours, so you’ll wrap up around 2 pm. It begins at an organic micro-farm, where you’ll wander through rows of Thai herbs, fruits, vegetables, and mushrooms while learning about the ingredients that make Thai cuisine so flavorful. You’ll even harvest fresh ingredients straight from the garden that will later be used in your cooking.

Next, you’ll head into the purpose-built kitchen to cook four classic Thai dishes from scratch. Depending on the day, that could include favorites like Pad Thai, Tom Yum soup, Green Curry, Penang curry, or Massaman curry, along with a herbal drink and dessert. It’s especially nice that vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options are available, making it easy to adjust the menu to suit different diets.

It’s such a fun, hands-on experience, and the best part is getting to sit down and enjoy everything you’ve cooked at the end. After tasting what you’ve made, it’s easy to see why this class has so many five-star reviews!

Morning – Option 2: Zip through the jungle on an ATV

If you’re craving something a little more adventurous on your final morning, this ATV jungle tour is a thrilling way to explore Koh Samui’s wilder side.

We recommend the 2-hour morning tour, starting at 10:30 am, which finishes around 12:30 pm, leaving the rest of the afternoon open. After a quick safety briefing, you’ll hop on your quad bike and head straight into the island’s jungle trails. 

Even if you’ve never driven an ATV before, the guides make sure everyone feels comfortable and confident before setting off. Drivers over 12 can even take the wheel themselves after passing a quick ability test at the base.

Once you get going, it’s all about muddy tracks, lush jungle paths, and winding dirt trails as you ride deeper into Koh Samui’s interior. The 2-hour option is definitely the one to choose if you can, since it takes you further into the jungle and includes a stop at a hidden waterfall, which feels like a proper reward after the ride.

It’s a fun mix of adrenaline and scenery, and a completely different way to experience the island beyond the beaches. By the time you finish around 12:30 pm, you’ll have covered plenty of ground and discovered parts of Koh Samui most visitors never get to see.

Lunch – Le Saline

If you chose the ATV option, you’ll have time for lunch before your final afternoon of exploring. We recommend heading to Lamai and stopping at Le Saline. It’s a family-run Italian restaurant that makes a nice change of pace from all the amazing Thai food. We loved their wood-fired pizzas (they were thin and crispy, just how we like them!). It’s a great, casual spot to refuel. 

If you did the cooking class, you’ll have already eaten, so you can skip this and head straight to your afternoon activities.

Afternoon – Wander through Lamai

When you’re finished with lunch, you have a few hours now to explore Lamai. Compared to Chaweng, Lamai is a lot less hectic with a calmer beach and fewer crowds; ideal for a final wander before wrapping up your trip to Koh Samui. 

Here are a few of our favorite ways to spend the afternoon here:

• Relax on Lamai Beach: If you haven’t had enough beach time yet, head to Lamai Beach. We found it to be noticeably quieter than Chaweng, which was exactly what we wanted at this point in our trip. 

• Stop by the Red Temple: Wat Ratchathammaram (aka the Red Temple) is a quick but memorable stop. Its deep red color is a bold contrast to the gold temples you’ll see everywhere else. You only need 30 to 45 minutes to take a look and snap a few photos. Short, sweet, and totally worth it.

• Visit a waterfall: If you’re craving one last dose of nature, head to Na Muang Waterfall 1  for the chance to see one of Koh Samui’s most beautiful cascades up close. Just keep in mind that if it has rained recently, the paths can get slippery, so you may not be able to climb all the way up (but you can still have a quick look around and take a few photos). 

After you’re done exploring, head back to your hotel to freshen up before dinner. You’ll want to be fully recharged and ready to savor every last moment of your final night in Koh Samui.

Dinner/Evening – The Roof Samui

Once you’re finished up in Lamai, it’s time to head to your final dinner spot of the trip: The Roof Samui. Reservations are basically a must here, especially if you’re hoping to score one of the prime “sunset tables.” Trust us, those seats are worth planning ahead for. As for the food, you can expect a mix of international dishes and Thai mains (think fresh seafood, stir fries, and salads). 

If you’re aiming for sunset, the sun usually falls between 6 pm and 6:30 pm, so keep that in mind when timing your departure from Lamai. Give yourself a little buffer, too, as this restaurant sits just outside of Chaweng, and traffic can get slow around rush hour. Grabbing a taxi (in our experience) is usually the easiest way to get there. 

If you’re not overly concerned about catching the exact sunset moment, the views are still beautiful after dark. Either way, it’s a special setting, and the perfect place to toast to an unforgettable few days in Koh Samui.
