Cozumel is one of our favorite Caribbean cruise ports because there’s so much to do in just one day. You can snorkel with turtles, explore Mayan ruins, race through the jungle on an ATV, relax at a beach club, or even descend beneath the waves in a submarine!

We’ve rounded up the best Cozumel shore excursions to suit every type of traveler, whether you’re craving adventure, culture, wildlife, or pure relaxation. We’ve also included practical information on port pickups, meeting points, and travel times, so you can choose the right experience with confidence.

Why We Book Shore Excursions Independently

We almost always book our shore excursions independently, and Cozumel is the ideal place to do this. We’ve used Viator many times for cruise port tours and have never had an issue! The key is choosing excursions designed specifically for cruise passengers, like the ones we’ve included below.

Cozumel has three main cruise ports: the International Cruise Terminal, also known as SSA, Puerta Maya, and Punta Langosta. The International Cruise Terminal and Puerta Maya are right next to each other, while Punta Langosta is closer to downtown. We’ve included pickup details and travel times throughout this guide, so you’ll know exactly how each tour works from your port.

Independent excursions are often more affordable than those sold by cruise lines, while offering very similar experiences. They also tend to run in smaller groups, which usually makes the day feel more relaxed and personal.

Many operators plan their timings around cruise schedules and ask for your ship details when you book. Some also offer refunds if your ship arrives late or misses the port. We still recommend checking the timings carefully and contacting the provider if anything feels tight, but overall, we’ve always found independent excursions to be a reliable and convenient option.

Best Cozumel Shore Excursions 

1. Go on a combo tour: ATV, snorkel, and beach club

We think this combo tour is perfect if you want to pack plenty of variety into your port day without organizing several separate activities. It combines an ATV adventure, snorkeling, local tastings, lunch, and time at a beach club, so you get the ideal balance of action and relaxation.

After pickup from your cruise port, you’ll head out on an ATV ride through Cozumel’s rugged trails. It’s a fun way to explore beyond the busy waterfront and see a wilder, untouched side of the island. I mean, nothing beats zooming around in a lush green jungle! You’ll also stop for a tequila tasting, where you can learn more about how Mexico’s most famous spirit is produced, and even taste some local chocolate – yum!

Later, the tour heads to Coco’s Beach Club for snorkeling and lunch. We love this beach because you can walk straight from the sand into the clear water and spot colorful fish and other marine life! It’s also just a really peaceful spot to slow down and enjoy the scenery after your ATV ride.

A fresh taco lunch is included, and past guests have praised both the food and the friendly, knowledgeable guides. Who knows, you might even get some impromptu Spanish lessons and local stories along the way!

2. Snorkel with turtles

If there’s one thing Cozumel is famous for, it’s the incredible snorkeling. Thanks to its crystal-clear water and thriving coral reefs, it’s considered one of the best places to snorkel in the Caribbean. So if you’ve only got one day in port, we think this tour is an absolute must!

Over four hours, we got to visit some of Cozumel’s most spectacular snorkeling spots by boat. The highlight was definitely the turtle sanctuary, where we had the chance to swim alongside green sea turtles in their natural habitat – and yes, it was every bit as amazing as it sounds! 

We also stopped at vibrant coral reefs teeming with tropical fish before heading to the famous El Cielo, a breathtaking sandbar with huge orange and red starfish scattered across the seabed. It’s truly something you have to see for yourself! 

The final stop is El Cielito, where we spent some time just floating in the warm Caribbean Sea while enjoying fresh fruit, ceviche, and drinks before cruising back to shore. It was the perfect chance to soak up the island’s laid-back atmosphere after an unforgettable morning in the water.

This tour is also really easy to join from the main cruise ports. If you’re arriving at SSA or Puerta Maya, just select Hotel El Cid La Ceiba as your departure point. It’s only a few minutes’ walk from either terminal, and the team will meet you there before taking you down to the boat. Just note that there’s a small $3 USD dock fee to pay on arrival.

3. Spend the day at Mr. Sancho’s Beach Club with all-inclusive access 

If your perfect day in Cozumel involves sunshine, cocktails, good food, and absolutely no rushing around, Mr. Sanchos Beach Club is calling your name! This all-inclusive day pass gives you access to what we can only describe as a tropical beachfront wonderland, with swimming pools and swim-up bars, hammocks, ocean kayaks, and a floating obstacle course. Spending the day here is SO much fun! 

And the best part is that all of your food and drinks are included, so once you’ve paid for the day pass, that’s it! You can order from the menu or visit the buffet as often as you please, while the open bar keeps the margaritas and tropical drinks flowing. (And we mean flowing – remember to drink some water in between!)

The beach is just steps from the pools and restaurants, so it’s really easy to switch between swimming in the Caribbean, lounging in the sun, and grabbing another taco! Mr. Sanchos is also known for its fantastic service. The staff are so friendly and create a fun, welcoming atmosphere, whether you’re visiting as a couple, with friends, or as a family. They also offer additional activities for an extra fee, including jet skis, snorkeling, and paragliding. 

Pickup isn’t included, but getting here is easy peasy. It’s around a 10-minute taxi ride from the International Cruise Terminal and Puerta Maya, or about 20 minutes from Punta Langosta.

For the ultimate laid-back port day, it’s hard to imagine a better place to soak up the Cozumel sunshine!

4. ATV to the Jade Caverns and see a Mayan Village

If you want to explore beyond Cozumel’s beaches and see a wilder side of the island, this ATV tour is such a fun choice. You’ll ride through jungle trails and local neighborhoods before heading to Jade Caverns, a dramatic underground cenote that formed millions of years ago.

The ATVs are automatic, so you don’t need to be an experienced rider to join in. After a quick safety briefing, you’ll follow your guide through the island’s rugged interior and learn more about the history and culture of Cozumel along the way.

And believe us when we say that the Jade Caverns are absolutely spectacular! You can cool off here with a swim in the cenote or, if you’re feeling brave, leap into the water from the 20-foot (6-meter) cliff! You’ll also learn about the importance of cenotes in Mayan culture before continuing to El Cedral, one of Cozumel’s oldest villages.

Here, you’ll have time to explore a 900-year-old Mayan temple and see one of the island’s oldest Catholic churches, with some time to browse locally-made crafts as well. Finally, the tour wraps up with a tasting of artisanal organic tequila – and we don’t know about you, but we think that’s the perfect reward after an afternoon of off-roading!

Pickup and drop-off are available from Cozumel’s cruise ports, making this a really easy option for your day ashore. Just note that there is an additional $20 USD Mayan land-use fee per person.

5. Go beneath the surface on an Atlantis Submarine Adventure

Ever wanted to explore the ocean without getting wet? This Atlantis Submarine adventure is easily one of the most unique shore excursions in Cozumel, taking you 100 feet (30 meters) beneath the surface to discover the island’s spectacular underwater world from the comfort of a real submarine!

The meeting point is easy to reach from the cruise ports, too. It’s just a 10-minute taxi ride from the International Cruise Terminal and Puerta Maya, or around 20 minutes from Punta Langosta. Just keep in mind that transportation isn’t included, and there’s a separate marine park fee to pay on arrival.

Your adventure begins with a short boat ride out to the submarine, where you’ll climb aboard before descending into the crystal-clear Caribbean Sea. As you glide through the protected Chankanaab Reef Marine Park, you’ll come face-to-face with colorful coral gardens, tropical fish, and all kinds of fascinating marine life through the submarine’s large viewing windows.

The onboard guide shares interesting facts about the reef ecosystem throughout the journey, so you’ll come away with a much deeper appreciation for one of the Caribbean’s healthiest coral reef systems. And because you’re in a submarine rather than the water itself, you can simply sit back and enjoy the incredible views.

We think that this is a fantastic option if you’re traveling with young children or aren’t a confident swimmer, but still want to admire the reef, and the glowing reviews certainly attest to that!

You don’t need a PADI certification or any previous experience to join this tour. Before entering the water, your instructor will explain the equipment, teach you the basic hand signals, and help you practice the essential skills in shallow water. Once everyone feels comfortable, you’ll head beneath the surface for a one-tank dive among colorful coral formations and tropical fish.

Cozumel is famous for its clear water and incredible marine life, so even your very first dive can feel like swimming through an aquarium! The instructors are known for being calm and reassuring, so we think that this is a fantastic choice if you’re excited to scuba dive but feeling a little nervous about taking that first breath underwater – which is totally understandable, just FYI! Your experience also includes admission to Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park, so the fun doesn’t have to end when your dive is over. You can relax on the beach, use the loungers, and go snorkeling afterward if you still haven’t had enough of Cozumel’s gorgeous water.

Chankanaab is only about a seven-minute drive from Cozumel’s main cruise ports, making it a convenient shore excursion. If scuba diving has been sitting on your bucket list, this is the perfect opportunity to finally give it a go!

Take a discovery scuba dive course 

Not sure if scuba diving is for you? This Discover Scuba Diving experience is a fantastic introduction to breathing underwater, with no previous diving experience or certification required.

After learning the basic skills and safety techniques with your instructor, you’ll head out by boat to explore Paradise Reef. Part of Cozumel Reefs National Park, this beautiful dive site is known for its colorful coral formations, swaying sea fans, and abundant tropical fish.

Because this experience includes two boat dives, you’ll have plenty of time to settle into scuba diving and enjoy the incredible underwater scenery. It’s also very convenient for cruise passengers, as the marina is just a five-minute taxi ride from the International Cruise Terminal and Puerta Maya. Pickup isn’t included, but the meeting point is easy to reach.

10. Taste your way around Cozumel on a food tour

One of our favorite ways to get to know a new destination is through its food, and this small-group food tour offers a delicious introduction to Cozumel’s local culture. Instead of sticking to the tourist hotspots, you’ll visit family-run restaurants and hidden eateries, as well as a bustling local market where island residents shop for fresh produce, spices, and ingredients.

Along the way, you’ll sample a fantastic variety of authentic Mexican dishes, from freshly made empanadas to delicious shrimp tacos caught in Cozumel’s surrounding waters. We also love that this tour showcases so many regional specialties and refreshing local drinks, like agua fresca and fresh fruit juice. There’s also a stop at a traditional Mexican bakery, where the smell of freshly baked pastries is almost impossible to resist!

11. See the Cozumel Mayan ruins 

If you’d like to discover a different side of Cozumel, this private tour combines fascinating Mayan history with some of the island’s most beautiful scenery. We think it’s the perfect choice if you want to balance sightseeing, culture, and a little relaxation during your port stop.

Honestly, learning to make Mexican food on our travels was one of the best things we’ve ever done, because we still cook those recipes to this day! 

During the workshop, you’ll learn how to make fresh tortillas from scratch, prepare creamy guacamole, and assemble delicious tacos al pastor using tips and techniques you can recreate back home. Then, of course, you’ll get to enjoy everything you’ve made alongside refreshing aguas frescas. Yum!

Once the class is over, you can spend the rest of your day relaxing on the beach, or taking advantage of the all-inclusive buffet and open bar – cheers! And if you’d rather stay active, you can also choose to upgrade your visit to include a guided bike tour around the park, which we think could be a lot of fun. 

KUZÁ Beach & Adventure Park is around a 15-minute drive from the International Cruise Terminal and Puerta Maya, or roughly 25 minutes from Punta Langosta. Transportation isn’t included, so you’ll need to arrange a taxi to the park. Still, if you’re looking for a shore excursion that combines great food, local culture, and a relaxing beach day, we think that this one ticks all the boxes.

Where to Stay Before or After your Cruise

If you’re cruising to Cozumel, there’s a good chance your trip will start from either Miami or Galveston, and we recommend arriving a night or two before setting sail. This gives you some extra time to explore, relax, and avoid the stress of traveling to the port on the same day as your cruise.

In Miami, Downtown is our top pick since you’ll be close to PortMiami, Bayside Marketplace, and plenty of restaurants and attractions. If you’re sailing from Galveston, staying near the Seawall is a great option, putting you close to the beach while still being just a short drive from the cruise terminals.

Courtyard Miami Downtown Brickell Area – $$$ 

Courtyard Miami Downtown Brickell Area is a great option if you want something comfortable and well-located for a short stay. It sits right between Downtown and Brickell, so you’ve got easy access to both areas, plus you’re only a short drive from the cruise port.

The hotel has a modern, business-style feel, with spacious rooms and a reliable setup that works well for a quick stop in the city. There’s also a pool and on-site dining, which is handy if you don’t feel like heading out after a long travel day.

The rooms are compact, but they’re very well designed, with a smart layout that makes the most of the space. The hotel also has a fun, tech-forward feel, with self-check-in and a stylish rooftop pool area. It’s a great pick if you’re happy with a smaller room in exchange for a great location and lower price.

There’s also an outdoor pool, fitness center, and complimentary breakfast, so you’ve got everything you need for an easy stay before your cruise.

Renting a Car in Mexico

Undoubtedly, one of the best ways to get around Mexico is in a rental car. 

I struggled to get around by bus and taxi for the longest time. But after renting a car in Cancun in 2023, I never looked back. It allowed me to explore the country without worrying about tours or taxis. It was why I fell in love with Mexico and eventually decided to live here periodically. 

I refuse to use local services whenever I rent a car in Mexico. The truth is they sometimes can’t be trusted or come with hidden fees (or costly insurance that doesn’t make sense.) There are even rental car scams! So instead, I use Discover Cars, the company most experienced travelers or ex-pats in Mexico recommend. Read my honest review of Discover Cars here for more details!

The rates on Discover Cars are cheap, too, with the average rental costing around $25 USD per day. Full coverage insurance can be added for an extra $10 USD a day too. 

Driving in Mexico also only requires a driver’s license using the Roman alphabet. If yours uses another like Japan and China, you simply need an international driving permit. 

Insurance is required, but if you book with Discover Cars and get the full coverage, that’s all you need! Oh, and being over 18 is required, and if you’re over 25, your rental will be much cheaper!
