Overview of the Best Areas To Stay in Puerto Vallarta

If you’re reading this blog post, the chances are you’re not sure where to stay in Puerto Vallarta. But don’t worry, because finding the right neighborhood doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. We’re going to break it down in a simple and straightforward fashion to help you find a base that suits your vibe and budget.
While Puerto Vallarta may be famous for its beaches and nightlife, it actually has so much more to offer! We love its golden shores, but we’re just as enthusiastic about its colorful heritage buildings and secluded hilltop enclaves. Believe me when I say that this city has a lot to offer!
And although the city’s different neighborhoods offer distinct vibes, it’s actually pretty easy to get around. We think it’s important to choose a base that suits your needs, but it’s good to know that staying in one area won’t stop you from exploring other parts of Puerto Vallarta.
- Zona Romántica (Romantic Zone/Old Town) – This is Puerto Vallarta’s most vibrant and walkable neighborhood, which is ideal for partygoers and LGBTQ+ travelers. Joint Boutique Hotel is a smart and affordable spot here.
- Centro (Downtown/El Centro) – The historic heart of the city, which is home to lots of cultural hotspots, including the iconic Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the Malecón boardwalk. We recommend Hotel Rosita offers a relaxing beachfront stay that won’t break the bank.
- Marina Vallarta – This upscale enclave is perfect for families and couples looking for a peaceful stay. Stay at Flamingo Vallarta Hotel & Marina for a resort-style stay overlooking the yacht-filled marina.
- Zona Hotelera (Hotel Zone) – Staying in this area makes everything super easy for first-time visitors, thanks to its abundance of beachfront resorts, shopping malls, and easy transport links. Hotel Mio Vallarta Unique & Different is a chic adults-only hotel with gorgeous sea views.
- 5 de Diciembre – This local area is perfect for travelers who want to see the “real” Puerto Vallarta, and it still offers easy access to Centro and all its attractions. The Paramar Beachfront Boutique Hotel is a beautiful 4-star hotel that sits right on the beach.
- Conchas Chinas – This is the “Beverly Hills” of Puerto Vallarta! Its luxury villas, private coves, and sweeping ocean views make it perfect for honeymooners and luxury travelers. Marboka Hotel & Suites is a friendly and characterful beachfront hotel.
- South Zone/Amapas – A beautiful and quiet area just south of the Romantic Zone, which offers a scenic stay, as long as you don’t mind the hills! V Azul Vallarta is a luxurious home from home with a rooftop pool and stunning sea views.
Important Tip
Multiple Puerto Vallarta trips have taught us that this city doesn’t reward spontaneity when it comes to planning. The good places get snapped up months in advance, leaving the overpriced and underwhelming options for last-minute travelers.
The sweet spot for booking Puerto Vallarta accommodations is 3-4 months out—enough time to secure good rates but not so far ahead that you’re locking in plans excessively early.
Where to Stay in Puerto Vallarta
Zona Romántica

Zona Romántica, also known as the Romantic Zone or Old Town, is the beating heart of Puerto Vallarta. This is where cobblestone streets meet colorful buildings, making it the city’s most Insta-friendly neighborhood. Bring your camera!
One reason that Zona Romántica is our top pick is that it’s the most walkable part of Puerto Vallarta! We love wandering around and hopping between taco stands and trendy cafes during the day, then enjoying all of the lively bars and clubs at night. Playa de los Muertos, one of Vallarta’s most famous beaches, is right here too, which is famous for its lively pier and buzzing atmosphere.
This neighborhood is especially popular with LGBTQ+ travelers, thanks to its inclusive vibe and abundance of gay-friendly bars and clubs. It’s an amazing choice for anyone who wants to be surrounded by energy and action. Even beyond the beach and nightlife, there’s always something happening here, from street performances and cute street markets.
Of course, the popularity of Zona Romántica means it can get crowded, especially in high season. Noise is part of the package, but for many, the vibrant energy and easy access to everything make this the best place to stay in Puerto Vallarta.
Pros
- Walkable, colorful, and full of local charm
- Great nightlife and LGBTQ+ friendly
Cons
- Can be crowded and noisy
- Hotels book up fast in high season
Hotel Boutique Rivera Del Rio – $$

Rivera Del Rio is a boutique gem that feels more like staying in a whimsical mansion than a hotel. Each room is uniquely decorated with antique furnishings, bold colors, and vintage charm that makes the whole place feel magical. We think it’s perfect for travelers who want something different from the standard resort experience.
The location puts you right in the heart of the Romantic Zone, close to the beach, restaurants, and nightlife, yet it’s still just tucked away enough to feel private. Guests love the rooftop pool with mountain views, and the welcoming staff who really go above and beyond. Rooms usually range between $80 and $250 USD per night.
Browse room options and book this boutique stay here!
Joint Boutique Hotel – $$

Joint Boutique Hotel is a stylish hotel with a bit of an industrial chic vibe. The bright, contemporary rooms feel fun and fresh, but the real draw here is its central location in the heart of the Romantic Zone. You’ll be close to Playa de los Muertos, as well as countless restaurants, cafes, and bars. We love the fact that the rooms are soundproofed to guarantee a peaceful night’s rest.
All in all, we think that this is a particularly good pick for couples or friends who want a clean, comfortable, and chic base right in the middle of Puerto Vallarta’s most vibrant neighborhood. Expect rates between $80 and $200 USD per night.
Check availability and book your stay here!
Hotel Posada De Roger – $

Hotel Posada De Roger is perfect for budget-conscious travelers who don’t want to sacrifice location. This family-run hotel has a welcoming, homey atmosphere and a charming courtyard filled with plants. The rooms are simple but colorful and most importantly, comfortable! It’s a great-value stay just steps from the action.
There’s a small swimming pool where you can cool off after exploring the Romantic Zone, and the cute little tropical-themed restaurant is a great spot to grab a low-key dinner. Best of all, you’ll be within walking distance of Playa de los Muertos, the pier, and plenty of shops and restaurants. Rooms typically cost between $60 and $200 USD per night.
Book this budget-friendly stay in Zona Romántica here!
Centro

Centro is the historic core of Puerto Vallarta and the best place to stay if you want to soak up the city’s traditional charm. This neighborhood is home to the famous Malecón boardwalk, which is lined with sculptures, street performers, shops, and restaurants. You’ll also find Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, one of Puerto Vallarta’s most iconic landmarks.
This area is a great choice for travelers who love being in the heart of it all. It’s a great place to soak up the city’s culture. It’s dotted with taco stands and local markets, as well as art galleries and fun bars. It’s lively during the day, but we like this area best at night, when we come here to enjoy music, lights, and nighttime strolls along the waterfront.
The trade-off is that Centro can be noisy and bustling, especially along the Malecón. It’s also not as close to the big beaches as Zona Romántica, though Playa Camarones is within walking distance. Still, for those who want an authentic Puerto Vallarta experience with history and nightlife at their doorstep, Centro is a fantastic base.
Pros
- Central location with iconic landmarks and the Malecón
- Great mix of history, culture, and nightlife
Cons
- Can be busy and noisy, especially at night
- Not as close to major beaches as other neighborhoods
BellView Hotel Boutique – $$$

BellView Hotel Boutique offers an old-school luxury stay with one of the best views in Puerto Vallarta. The property is perched on a hillside in Centro, and with its wooden beams, arches, and classical furniture, it really feels like staying in a grand hacienda.
Each suite has its own character, some with balconies overlooking Banderas Bay, and others with intricate tilework and elegant vintage details.
Guests love that this hotel feels worlds away from the busy streets below, while still being just a short walk from the Malecón and Old Town attractions. The glamorous on-site restaurant is another highlight, serving gourmet Mexican cuisine beneath chandeliers and frescoes. Rooms typically range between $200 and $1,000 USD per night.
Check availability and book this old-school luxury stay here!
Hotel Rosita – $$

Hotel Rosita is a Puerto Vallarta classic. It’s actually the city’s oldest hotel, dating back to 1948. Despite its long history, it remains a popular choice thanks to its unbeatable location at the north end of the Malecón. You’ll be right on the waterfront, steps away from shops, restaurants, and nightlife.
The rooms are simple and comfortable, many with balconies overlooking the ocean. There’s also a pool, a casual on-site restaurant, and a lively atmosphere that reflects the city’s energy. This is a great pick for travelers who want to stay somewhere historic, central, and affordable. Rooms generally cost between $200 and $300 USD per night.

Hotel Rio Malecon – $$

Hotel Rio Malecon is a stylish and budget-friendly boutique option right in the center of the action. It’s located just two blocks from the Malecón and offers easy access to shops, cafes, and nightlife. The hotel combines modern design with a relaxed vibe, with a small outdoor pool and courtyard where you can relax.
Rooms are bright and clean, with air conditioning and contemporary décor. We think it offers unbeatable value for money given its central location! Expect rates between $75 and $225 USD per night.

Marina Vallarta

Marina Vallarta is one of Puerto Vallarta’s most polished and upscale neighborhoods. It’s perfect if you want a resort-style vacation with all the conveniences close at hand! The marina itself is a hub of activity, lined with luxury yachts, trendy restaurants, and chic boutiques. We think it’s a fantastic base for travelers who want a quieter and more refined atmosphere compared to the lively Malecón or Zona Romántica.
One of the best things about staying here is the easy access to boat tours. From the marina, you can set off on whale-watching trips (in season), snorkeling excursions, or sunset cruises. Golf lovers will also be at home thanks to the 18-hole Marina Vallarta Golf Club right next door! We like how safe and well-kept the neighborhood feels, with palm-lined streets and plenty of international dining options.
Another big perk is convenience: Marina Vallarta is only about a 10-minute drive from the airport, which makes it ideal if you’re in town for a shorter trip or want to maximize beach time without spending hours in transit. The downside is that you’re a little removed from the Old Town charm and nightlife, but if you’re after relaxation and modern comforts, Marina Vallarta is perfect!
Pros
- Upscale area with resorts, restaurants, and shops
- Convenient location close to the airport and golf course
Cons
- Less authentic, local feel compared to Centro or Zona Romántica
- Farther from Puerto Vallarta’s main nightlife and historic areas
Flamingo Vallarta Hotel & Marina – $$

Flamingo Vallarta Hotel & Marina is a laid-back resort that puts you right along the marina’s edge. The rooms are spacious and simple, with balconies that offer views of the yachts and palm trees below. Guests also love the large outdoor pool, which is surrounded by tropical gardens and feels like a little oasis in the city.
The hotel features a restaurant and bar overlooking the water, offering the perfect spot to enjoy a drink while watching boats glide by. You’re also just a short walk from Marina Vallarta’s dining and shopping, and the airport is only a quick drive away.
While it doesn’t have the flash of some of the all-inclusive resorts, we think that Flamingo Vallarta offers great value for the location. Rooms usually range from $80 to $450 USD per night, depending on the season and whether or not you choose to go all-inclusive.
Book your stay at this laid-back resort here!
Comfort Inn Puerto Vallarta Golfside & Marina – $

Comfort Inn is a smart, budget-friendly pick in Marina Vallarta. It’s located right across from the golf club and just a short stroll from the marina itself. The rooms are clean and practical, with everything you need for a comfortable stay, including air conditioning and Wi-Fi.
There’s also an outdoor pool, a casual restaurant serving Mexican and international dishes, and free breakfast included in the rate, which is always a great perk for budget-conscious travelers. While it doesn’t have luxury touches or direct marina views, the location is excellent for the price, and the staff are known for being welcoming and helpful.
Rooms typically cost between $90 and $260 USD per night, making it one of the most affordable places to stay in Marina Vallarta.

Zona Hotelera (Hotel Zone)

Zona Hotelera, or the Hotel Zone, stretches along Puerto Vallarta’s coastline. It’s the go-to area for beach lovers and resort seekers, and honestly, it’s not hard to see why! It offers the perfect combination of scenery and convenience, with its golden beaches and big resorts. If you want an all-inclusive vacation, this is the place to stay!
One of the biggest draws of this area is the easy access to Puerto Vallarta’s stunning beaches, like Playa de los Muertos and Playa Palmares. In addition, you’re close to family-friendly attractions such as Los Muertos Pier, the Malecon, and the Marina Vallarta area, which is just a short drive away.
Dining options around here range from upscale seafood restaurants to casual taco stands, and nightlife is lively but not overwhelming. Of course, this area feels a lot more commercial and less cultural than the Romantic Zone and Centro.
Those areas are also touristy, but they offer more heritage charm than the Hotel Zone. However, for travelers who want to spend most of their time at the beach or pool, with quick access to restaurants and local attractions, the Hotel Zone is the obvious pick.
Pros
- Beachfront resorts with easy ocean access
- Close to Marina Vallarta and Malecon for shopping and dining
Cons
- Can feel touristy and busy, especially in peak season
- Less authentic local vibe compared to Centro or Romantic Zone
Krystal Grand Puerto Vallarta – $$$

Krystal Grand Puerto Vallarta is the ultimate luxury stay in the Hotel Zone! It’s a gorgeous beachfront property with multiple pools, restaurants, and bars on site. If you want a VIP vacation, this is the place to stay.
The spacious rooms feature contemporary décor, comfortable bedding, and large windows that let in plenty of natural light. And don’t get me started on the spa, which offers beautiful baths and an array of indulgent and beautifying treatments.
Rooms start around $300 USD per night and can reach $650 USD depending on the season and room type.

Hotel Mio Vallarta Unique & Different – Adults Only – $$

Hotel Mio Vallarta is a boutique, adults-only property that stands out for its stylish, modern design and tranquil atmosphere. Since no kids are allowed, it’s obviously not ideal for families, but it is absolutely perfect for those seeking beachfront relaxation. The hotel offers a sleek rooftop pool, cozy lounge areas, and close proximity to the beach.
The staff are really friendly and helpful, and they go out of their way to make guests feel comfortable and welcome! Rooms generally range from $150 to $500 USD per night, depending on the season and room category.

The hotel has an outdoor pool and an on-site restaurant with an international menu. It has a gym and, best of all, a generous cancellation policy that allows you to stay flexible. All in all, it offers incredible value for money in one of Puerto Vallarta’s most popular areas! Rooms usually cost between $120 and $200 USD per night.
Book this budget-friendly stay in the hotel zone here!
5 de Diciembre

5 de Diciembre is a vibrant neighborhood just south of Puerto Vallarta’s Romantic Zone. It’s not as well-known as some of the other areas we’ve discussed so far, but it’s ideal for travelers who want a more local, laid-back experience without straying too far from the action.
That may not be everyone, but as seasoned travelers, we definitely enjoy seeing the more authentic side of a destination, away from the tourist hubs.
As you might have already guessed, this area is named after one of Puerto Vallarta’s important historical dates—more specifically, the date when land was given back to local people in 1935. Since then, it has grown into a bustling community with a mix of residential streets, boutique hotels, and beach access. In fact, the neighborhood is well known for its calm beaches, so you can enjoy swimming and sunset walks without the crowds.
Meanwhile, the main streets are home to charming restaurants, lively cafés, and small shops. Its proximity to the Malecon and the Romantic Zone means you can easily enjoy nightlife and cultural attractions while returning to a peaceful base at the end of the day.
Pros
- Quieter, more authentic local vibe
- Close to beaches and Romantic Zone attractions
Cons
- Fewer large resorts and luxury amenities
- Some areas may require taxis or rideshares to reach main sights
Villa Premiere Boutique Hotel & Romantic Getaway – $$$

Villa Premiere Boutique Hotel & Romantic Getaway is a beautiful adults-only property in 5 de Diciembre. It’s elegant with minimalist marble decor, ocean views, and a serene vibe. We love the elegant rooms and the full-service spa, which feels like some sort of secret celebrity escape!
There’s a strong wellness focus here, including beachfront yoga classes and whirlpool baths. If you’re coming to Puerto Vallarta to relax and recharge, this place is perfect. We also think it would be an amazing honeymoon hotel! Rooms start around $300 USD per night and can reach $1,000+ USD for the most luxurious suites.
Browse room options and reserve this 5-star stay here!
The Paramar Beachfront Boutique Hotel – $$

The Paramar Beachfront Boutique Hotel is a lovely 4-star hotel that ticks all of our boxes! It offers direct beach access, warm and friendly staff, and colorful, comfortable rooms that have a bit more personality than most resorts offer. Plus, breakfast is included each morning, so you can start your day by fuelling up with complimentary waffles, omelettes, and tropical fruit.
We love the hotel’s location, too. Not only are you just steps away from the beach, but there are lots of local shops and restaurants nearby. It’s a charming and convenient base for exploring 5 de Diciembre and nearby Romantic Zone attractions. Rooms generally range from $200 to $575 USD per night, depending on the season and room category.
Check availability and book your stay here!
Hotel Portonovo Plaza Malecon – $

Hotel Portonovo Plaza Malecon is a budget-friendly option for travelers looking to stay close to 5 de Diciembre’s beaches and Puerto Vallarta’s main sights. It’s simple yet smart and compact with a small on-site pool and easy access to the Malecon, as well as local shops and restaurants.
It’s a practical choice for families, solo travelers, or anyone who wants a convenient base without the frills (and high prices) of luxury resorts. Breakfast is included, too, which helps save money on eating out. So if you’re planning on spending most of your time out and about exploring, this is a fantastic budget-friendly pick! Rooms usually cost between $85 and $185 USD per night.

Conchas Chinas

Conchas Chinas is one of Puerto Vallarta’s most exclusive neighborhoods. In fact, it’s known as the “Beverly Hills of Puerto Vallarta”, so that should give you an idea of the level of luxury you can expect!
This area is ideal for travelers seeking privacy, upscale accommodations, and a more tranquil pace of life. The area was developed in the mid-20th century as a hillside retreat for wealthy families, which explains its mix of modern and traditional architecture.
If you want to enjoy Puerto Vallarta’s scenic beauty without noise and crowds, you’ll fall in love with Conchas Chinas. At the same time, you’re only a 10-15 minute drive or taxi ride from Centro, and 5-10 minutes from the Romantic Zone, so you’re still close to the city’s main attractions and nightlife.
The beaches here are smaller and quieter than those in the Romantic Zone. They are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and romantic sunset strolls! Playa Conchas Chinas is the main draw, with its rocky coves and crystal-clear waters, and Playa Gemelas offers a similarly serene vibe.
The neighborhood is also dotted with art galleries, boutique shops, and fine dining restaurants, giving visitors a taste of local culture without the crowds.
Pros
- Quiet, upscale neighborhood with stunning ocean views
- Secluded beaches perfect for swimming and relaxing
Cons
- Higher prices compared to other areas
- Limited nightlife and fewer budget-friendly options

Outside, you’ve got a pretty pool area and easy access to Conchas Chinas’ beaches. Plus, you’re just a 6-minute drive from the Romantic Zone, so you get easy access to the main tourism and culture hub, as well as the serenity of Puerto Vallarta’s answer to Beverly Hills.
Rooms start around $170 USD per night and can reach $1,000+ USD for premium suites during peak season.

Marboka Hotel & Suites – $$

Marboka Hotel & Suites is a modern mid-range option in Conchas Chinas, offering comfortable rooms with stylish décor and private balconies overlooking the bay. The hotel features a pool, a lounge area, and a small restaurant. It’s relaxed but not too stuffy.
The location is a major perk, with Playa Conchas Chinas just steps away and easy access to the Romantic Zone for dining and nightlife. We think that this is a great choice for travelers who want to enjoy the area’s natural beauty without splurging on a luxury resort. Rooms generally range from $275 to $600 USD per night.

South Zone / Amapas

The South Zone, often called Amapas, is a hillside neighborhood just south of Puerto Vallarta’s Romantic Zone. It’s known for its winding streets, lush greenery, and stunning views of Banderas Bay.
This area is perfect for travelers who want a quieter and more residential feel. But what’s great about it is that you’ll still be close to the beaches, nightlife, and restaurants of the Romantic Zone.
In terms of accommodation, Amapas offers a mix of modern condos, boutique hotels, and charming vacation rentals. But the best thing about it is that it’s home to some of Puerto Vallarta’s most scenic beaches.
Playa de los Muertos is just a short walk downhill, while Playa Conchas Chinas is just a 3-minute drive or 16-minute walk away if you feel like some secluded swimming and sunbathing. But that may not be necessary because Amapas is also home to some of Puerto Vallarta’s most scenic beaches!
Our favorite thing about staying in this area is its laid-back vibe. Art galleries, local cafés, and gourmet restaurants are scattered throughout the neighborhood, and it feels nicely removed from the throngs of tourists. We like walking around and seeing spots populated by locals.
Pros
- Stunning hillside views and scenic beaches
- Quiet, residential vibe
- Close to Romantic Zone attractions
Cons
- Hilly terrain can be challenging for walking
- Limited nightlife compared to downtown areas
Vallarta Shores Beach Hotel – $$$

Vallarta Shores Beach Hotel is an upscale property offering direct beach access and sweeping views of the bay. Its modern rooms feature terraces or balconies, which are perfect for enjoying Puerto Vallarta’s famous sunsets. The hotel has a relaxed, sophisticated vibe, with an infinity pool, lounge areas, and a beachfront terrace for morning coffee or evening drinks.
The service here is super attentive, and the location is quiet but still within a short drive or walk to the Romantic Zone. It’s an ideal choice for couples or honeymooners seeking privacy, but since there are plenty of suites that can accommodate up to 8 people, it’s a good pick for groups, too.
Rooms start around $200 USD per night and can reach $1,000 USD for premium suites.
Check availability and book this upscale stay here!
V Azul Vallarta – $$

We love V Azul Vallarta because it’s the pinnacle of modern beachy style! It’s a modern hotel with lots of marble and natural light, giving it a breezy, coastal feel. Your vacation begins as soon as you step through the door!
The location is fantastic for travelers who want a peaceful hillside retreat while remaining close to beaches like Playa de los Muertos and the restaurants of the Romantic Zone. If you’re in Puerto Vallarta to relax at the beach rather than party downtown, this is the perfect pick.
Rooms generally range from $275 to $400 USD per night, depending on the season and room type.
Reserve your stay at V Azul Vallarta here!
Tropicana Hotel Puerto Vallarta – $

Tropicana Hotel Puerto Vallarta offers incredible value for money in Amapas. The rooms are pretty simple, but there are two swimming pools with ocean views, as well as a private beach area for guests to enjoy. Not bad for a budget-friendly stay!
There’s also an on-site restaurant for convenience, as well as quadruple rooms for families and groups. Meanwhile, the vibe on site is casual, so it’s a great pick for anyone who prioritizes affordability and location over fancy extras. Rooms usually cost between $60 and $180 USD per night, and there is a two-night minimum stay.

Renting a Car in Mexico

Undoubtedly, one of the best ways to get around Mexico is in a rental car.
I struggled to get around by bus and taxi for the longest time. But after renting a car in Cancun in 2023, I never looked back. It allowed me to explore the country without worrying about tours or taxis. It was why I fell in love with Mexico and eventually decided to live here periodically.
I refuse to use local services whenever I rent a car in Mexico. The truth is they sometimes can’t be trusted or come with hidden fees (or costly insurance that doesn’t make sense.) There are even rental car scams! So instead, I use Discover Cars, the company most experienced travelers or ex-pats in Mexico recommend. Read my honest review of Discover Cars here for more details!
The rates on Discover Cars are cheap, too, with the average rental costing around $25 USD per day. Full coverage insurance can be added for an extra $10 USD a day too.
Driving in Mexico also only requires a driver’s license using the Roman alphabet. If yours uses another like Japan and China, you simply need an international driving permit.
Insurance is required, but if you book with Discover Cars and get the full coverage, that’s all you need! Oh, and being over 18 is required, and if you’re over 25, your rental will be much cheaper!
Don’t Forget Travel Insurance!
If you’re looking to save money on travel insurance, we currently use and recommend SafetyWing. We’ve been using their coverage since 2018 and they’ve had our backs when we needed emergency flights and got sick overseas.
SafetyWing is one of the cheapest providers out there and covers everything from medical costs to lost luggage, travel delays, and emergency flights. A huge difference we’ve found between them and other companies is that they let you take out a policy AFTER leaving your home country. We’ve also found it handy that it’s a monthly payment rather than a lump sum, and you can get a refund for unused time.
SafetyWing has helped us out in some scary situations before and their affordable coverage has given us peace of mind. You can read our honest review of SafetyWing for all the pros and cons.
