From exploring ancient ruins to gliding through the Coconut Forest in a bamboo basket boat, these adventures go beyond the typical tourist trail. So if you’re ready to experience Hoi An’s magic up close, here are 10 unforgettable activities to add to your itinerary!

1. Visit the ancient My Son Sanctuary

If ancient ruins and hidden history excite you, a visit to My Son Sanctuary is a must while in Hoi An. We took this half-day tour the first time we were in Vietnam, and it felt like stepping straight into an Indiana Jones movie – definitely one of the most memorable experiences of my trip!

This UNESCO World Heritage Site was once the spiritual hub of the Champa Kingdom, and you can feel the ancient energy as you walk among the ruins. It’s one of those places that’s just as magical in person as it looks in photos.

The adventure kicks off with convenient hotel pickup, so there’s no need to worry about getting there. The scenic drive takes about an hour, with views of the lush countryside on the way. Once you arrive, the sight of ancient temples surrounded by jungle is breathtaking.

Your local guide will lead the way, sharing fascinating stories of the Cham civilization and pointing out intricate carvings that date as far back as the 4th century!

3. Learn how to cook Vietnamese food

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love Vietnamese food – it’s my go-to whenever I’m ordering takeout. So, booking this cooking class in Hoi An was a no-brainer. And I’m so glad I did! It turned out to be so much more than just a cooking class – it’s a full-on cultural adventure!

The experience kicks off with a trip to a bustling local market. You’ll wander through colorful stalls packed with fresh produce and fragrant herbs. Your guide will introduce you to essential Vietnamese ingredients and even help you bargain with local vendors (which is an experience in itself!).

Next, it’s time for a little adventure. You’ll head to the countryside and hop in a traditional basket boat to float down the scenic canals of the Nipa forest and try to catch some crabs on the riverbank (which proved to be very difficult!). Our boat guide was so much fun – he had us singing songs and laughing the entire time!

Next, we went up the road to the cooking school, where the real fun begins. A friendly local chef guided us step-by-step through the process of making a variety of authentic Vietnamese dishes. We made fresh spring rolls, crispy banh xeo (Vietnamese pancakes), and chicken rice noodles. And yes, you get to eat everything you cook – which might just be the best part!

4. Explore Old Hoi An and the night market

If you’re visiting Hoi An for the first time, this sightseeing tour is the perfect way to get a feel for the city while ticking off some of its most iconic experiences. We did it on our first day in Hoi An, and it really helped us to get a feel for the city before exploring on our own. 

The day starts with hotel pickup and a scenic drive to the Marble Mountains. These dramatic limestone hills are packed with caves, pagodas, and sweeping views. It’s such a unique and magical place! I had so much fun exploring the hidden caves and peaceful pagodas – I even stumbled upon a giant Buddha statue in a dimly lit cavern!

Next, it’s off to Hoi An Ancient Town as the sun sets and the town’s famous lanterns start to glow. Our guide walked us through charming streets and shared stories of Hoi An’s rich history.

But the real highlight is the Hoai River lantern boat ride. Floating down the water surrounded by hundreds of glowing lanterns was unforgettable! 

The tour wraps up at the bustling Hoi An Night Market, where street food, handmade souvenirs, and lively energy are everywhere. Our guide showed us where to get the best banh mi, and I left with a few souvenirs to take home.

5. Eat your way through Hoi An

If you’re a foodie, this evening walking food tour is an experience you can’t miss while in Hoi An! As the culinary hub of Central Vietnam, Hoi An is packed with amazing street food and tasty restaurants. But with so many options, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed – which is why this food tour was a total game-changer for us.

The adventure kicks off at sunset, just as the lanterns start to glow. Our guide, Nancy, led our small group of 12 through hidden alleyways, taking us to places most tourists would never find. 

First up were the famous white rose dumplings – a Hoi An specialty that’s just as beautiful as it is delicious. Then it was on to a local spot for crispy and flavor-packed banh mi (my favorite!). This place has been perfecting it for generations, and it really shows!

But it’s not just about eating. Along the way, we learned about food traditions and even played some traditional street games – an unexpected (and super fun!) addition to the experience. The evening wrapped up with a peaceful boat ride on the Hoai River. Floating along the water under glowing lanterns was the perfect way to relax after all that delicious food.

Throughout the tour, you’ll meet the welcoming people of Quang Nam Province, sample fresh fruits, and enjoy regional delicacies (did somebody say Banh Beo?!). At the end of the tour, you’ll board a ferry to get back to Hoi An. Seeing Hoi An from the water offered such a unique perspective on the city – it was stunning!

The day kicks off with hotel pickup, and before you know it, you’re off to the My Son Valley, a place known for its stunning views and rich history. After a short safety briefing, you’ll hop on an ATV and cruise through lush rice paddies, thick jungle trails, and quiet rural villages. 

One of the coolest parts of the tour is the visit to a local organic farm. You’ll meet local farmers and get a firsthand look at sustainable farming practices. There’s even a chance to cool off with a swim in a fresh mountain stream – an absolute treat after riding through the heat!
