Planning a trip to Hilton Head Island and not sure where to stay? You’re in the right place!

Hilton Head Island is undoubtedly a charming coastal town, and though it’s relatively small, where you stay can really make a difference to your trip. You could base yourself right by lively Coligny Beach if you don’t want to walk far for restaurants and the beach, or enjoy a more active family trip in Palmetto Dunes, with its golf courses and racquet sports.

For a first visit, I generally think Coligny Beach is one of the best areas to stay on Hilton Head Island, but if you’re thinking somewhere quieter, I’ve got a few other great options for you. Keep reading to find your perfect spot!

Overview of the Best Areas to Stay on Hilton Head Island

One of the first things to know about Hilton Head Island is that there isn’t really one central town. Instead, the island is split into different beach and resort areas, so where you stay can make a big difference to your trip!

My family and I always stay near Coligny Beach, and it’s become our go-to whenever we visit Hilton Head. We love being able to walk to the beach, grab dinner, browse the shops, or go for ice cream without constantly getting in the car. For a first visit, it’s definitely the area I recommend most, but there are a few other great options depending on the type of vacation you’re after.

Hilton Head is also super bike-friendly, with paths running all over the island. We still like having a car for exploring further afield, while the free seasonal Breeze Trolley is another handy way to get around certain areas.

One last tip: book early if you’re visiting during summer, spring break, or a big golf weekend. The best hotels, especially oceanfront rooms, can go quickly!

• Coligny Beach & Shipyard – Best for first-time visitors – This is the best area to stay if you want shops, restaurants, and the beach within easy reach. My top stay here is Courtyard by Marriott Hilton Head Island with a rooftop pool and great cocktails just two blocks from the Coligny Beach Park. 

• Palmetto Dunes – Best for families & resorts – If you want a typical resort vacation, this is where you’ll want to base yourself. Hilton Beachfront Resort & Spa is a large resort with several pools, tennis, pickleball, and nearby golf, so there’s always something to do. 

• Port Royal – Best for a quieter stay – Families and anyone hoping for a quiet holiday will feel right at home here. Island Links Resort is my favorite choice here, with spacious apartments that can sleep up to 10 guests and family pool parties, so it’s really a no-brainer.

Coligny Beach & Shipyard 

BEST FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS

Pros 

• Close to the beach, shops, and restaurants
• Easy to get around by bike
• Lots of hotel and resort options

Cons 

• Can get busy, especially in summer
• Hotels right near the beach can be pricey
• Noisier than some other parts of Hilton Head

If this is your first time on Hilton Head Island, Coligny Beach is exactly where you’d want to stay. It’s one of the liveliest and most walkable areas, with a wide sandy beach, restaurants, shops, and family-friendly spots all right nearby. My family and I enjoy staying in this area because we don’t want to walk far to the beach or dinner, and honestly, it always works perfectly!

Coligny Beach is also one of the top beaches in the United States, so you know you’re getting a pretty great beach right on your doorstep. Keep an eye on the water too, because you might even spot dolphins swimming right near the shore! 

It wasn’t always this busy, though. Back in 1955, two entrepreneurs opened a small grocery store here that eventually grew into Coligny Plaza. That one shop helped turn Hilton Head from a quiet island with dirt roads into the vacation destination it is today.

We especially loved Coligny Plaza because it’s right across from Coligny Beach Park, so it was our go-to spot after the beach, especially the ice cream spots. This is an open-air shopping village with more than 60 stores, from restaurants and local art to souvenirs and beach gear. 

The only downside is that Coligny can get pretty busy during the summer, but for a first visit, having so much right on your doorstep makes life a whole lot easier.

Sonesta Resort Hilton Head Island  – $$$ 

If you want to splurge a bit while staying close to Coligny Beach, Sonesta Resort Hilton Head Island is a great choice. While it’s technically located in Shipyard, it’s roughly a 25-minute walk or a quick bike ride to Coligny Beach Park.

One tip if you’re traveling with kids: book a ground-floor room with a terrace and pool view. You can get in and out easily while the kids sleep, and you’ll also have direct beach access. Beach chairs and umbrellas are available to rent through a third party, which works out cheaper than the resort’s $50 daily rate.

Food can add up quickly at a resort, so the mini fridge comes in handy if you want to save a little. You can also drive to local restaurants for dinner. Shipyard has paved trails and bike rentals too, so it’s super easy to get around. Prices usually start around $220 USD per night, depending on the room and season.

We also recommend Marriott’s Grande Ocean if beachfront access is your priority. It’s also less than a 10-minute walk down Forest Beach Drive, and it offers 5 outdoor pools, a lazy river, tennis courts, and seasonal kids’ camp activities.

Courtyard by Marriott Hilton Head Island – $$

My family and I didn’t want to spend a fortune on a hotel, but we also wanted to be close enough to walk everywhere, so Courtyard by Marriott Hilton Head Island was an easy choice. It’s roughly two blocks from Coligny Beach Park, and the free seasonal Breeze Trolley stops right here, connecting you to places like Folly Field Beach.

We got way more than I expected for the price, and that rooftop pool was definitely a bonus. It’s the perfect spot for cocktails and snacks while enjoying the views. Our room had a balcony overlooking the pool, and you can probably guess where we spent our mornings, drinking coffee in our pajamas! 

Or, grab your Starbucks favorite from The Bistro in the lobby and take it up to the rooftop. Prices typically start at around $140 USD per night.

If Courtyard by Marriott Hilton Head Island is fully booked, Beach House Resort Hilton Head Island is another great option right on Coligny Beach. We’d stay here just for the Tiki Hut beach bar, with cocktails and live music every day. 

Alternatively, Coral Sands Resort by Palmera offers spacious accommodations, including 3-room villas that are ideal for large groups and families. It’s also just a 15-minute walk from both Coligny Beach and the shops and restaurants at Coligny Plaza. 

Holiday Inn Express Hilton Head Island – $

For a more budget-friendly stay that’s still close to the beach, Holiday Inn Express Hilton Head Island is definitely a great bargain. It’s right across from Lowcountry Celebration Park, so the location really couldn’t be more convenient. 

We also love the newly transformed space. Yes, everything feels fresh! The hotel sits between two scenic lagoons and is surrounded by massive oak trees, which gives it a nice, peaceful feel. You also get free breakfast, lawn games, bike rentals, and a golf cart trolley to shuttle you around. Need I say more? 

You can even bring up to two dogs for a fee, and parking is available for $10 USD per day. Prices typically start at around $120 USD per night, which is a bargain if you ask us.

Spark by Hilton is another affordable option with free breakfast, including a customizable bagel station, coffee and tea available around the clock, a marketplace, and an outdoor pool. It’s simple but well-maintained, and South Forest Beach is just a 10-minute walk away via residential access paths. 

We also recommend Palmera Inn and Suites, a little outside Coligny Beach, but with great reviews and much cheaper rates if you don’t need to be right on the ocean. It’s an all-suite hotel, so you get more space and the convenience of a hotel, which is kind of the best of both worlds. 

Palmetto Dunes

BEST FOR FAMILIES & RESORTS

Pros 

• Great for families
• Quiet, resort-style feel  
• Beach access 

Cons 

• Can be pricey
• Not as walkable as Coligny
• You’ll likely need a car to get around

If you love a classic resort vacation, Palmetto Dunes will feel just like home. It’s a large oceanfront resort community right in the middle of the island, with beautiful beaches, golf courses, tennis and pickleball facilities, bike trails, and a scenic lagoon system.

There’s a reason families love Palmetto Dunes because you really don’t have to go far for a good time. Here you can start your morning with a kayak ride through the glassy lagoon, then maybe squeeze in a quick game of pickleball. 

Afternoons are all about the beach, and because Palmetto Dunes is a gated community, the beach is a lot quieter than Coligny Beach. It’s a great spot when you want a relaxing beach day without all the crowds. Once you’ve had enough sun, grab a beach cruiser and cruise along the shaded bike paths around the community.

After that, head to a beach bar or pool bar for happy hour. I also love that there’s a free, on-demand Palmetto Dunes Buggy golf cart shuttle that picks you up from your resort and takes you over to Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina.

The only downside is that Palmetto Dunes is pretty spread out, so some areas are easier to reach by bike, shuttle, or car. Still, you’ve got so much right here that you really don’t need to go far.

Omni Hilton Head Oceanfront Resort – $$$ 

If you really want to splash out, Omni Hilton Head Oceanfront Resort won’t disappoint! This massive property sits inside the gated Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort Community and has private boardwalk access to the beach. That alone is a pretty big selling point for me!

The 11-mile lagoon is right nearby too, and you can rent canoes or kayaks from the resort and paddle through the neighborhood. Need I say more? The resort was also recently renovated and expanded, with a new family-friendly pool, fully transformed pool bar, fire pits, and coastal-style studio suites.

Food-wise, you’ve got five restaurants to choose from, whether you’re after something upscale or just want a quick grab-and-go meal. And one more thing you’ll probably love: the resort is fully dog-friendly, so you can bring your pup along! Prices start at around $240 USD per night, so it’s a bit of a splurge!!

Hilton Beachfront Resort & Spa – $$ 

If you’re trying to save a bit but don’t want to give up a beachfront location, Hilton Beachfront Resort & Spa is definitely a good choice! It’s inside the gated community and sits right by the white-sand beaches, with tennis, pickleball, and golf facilities nearby. 

There are also several pools, including one that’s 13 feet (about 4 meters) deep for diving and lap swimming, which you don’t see every day! So you get a lot for your money, and that’s a win in my book.

Like many resorts in the area, this one has also been renovated, so everything feels fresh, from the rooms and suites to the dining spots, reception area, and event spaces. Prices start at around $180 USD per night, which is a pretty reasonable price for a spot right on the beach. 

Home2 Suites – $

Hilton Head Island can be pretty expensive, but a stay at Home2 Suites will definitely work in your favor. You might not be right by the beach, but it’s just a quick 10-minute drive away, and better yet, the hotel offers a seasonal complimentary shuttle that takes you directly to the beach, so you don’t need to worry about transportation. How convenient is that?

If you’re not feeling a beach day, you can cool off in the saltwater pool at the hotel and maybe make use of the barbecue facilities for a little picnic. I especially like the all-suite layout, as it works great for families and larger groups, or anyone who just needs more room.

To help you save even more, breakfast is free and comes with a build-your-own waffle station and lots more to choose from. Prices start at just $100 USD per night, not bad at all!

Hotel Carolina is a lovely alternative if you prefer something smaller, no-frills, and with easy access to the main hubs. It’s right behind a local mini-golf course and a diner, and just a 3-minute drive from Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina. 

SpringHill Suites is another all-suite option if you want a bit more space without paying oceanfront resort prices. I really like the outdoor area with the pool, and you also get free breakfast and parking, so that’s a pretty good deal! 

Port Royal  

BEST FOR A QUIETER STAY

Pros 

• Quieter and less crowded
• Lovely beaches 
• Great for a relaxing stay
• Ideal for families

Cons 

• Restaurants and shops can’t be reached on foot
• Some resorts can be pricey  
• Not as walkable as Coligny Beach

If you’re after a quieter beach vacation, Port Royal is just the place. It’s on the northern side of the island, with spacious resorts, golf courses, bike paths, and long stretches of sand that feel much less crowded than Coligny Beach. 

I’d happily spend a few days here just taking it slow. Grab a bike and cruise along the trails, spend the afternoon on Folly Field Beach, squeeze in a stop at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park or Fort Howell, play a round at The Coastline & Port Royal Golf Club, then head back to the resort for a swim or a drink. There’s also lots of room on the sand, so you can spread out and let your kids be as loud as they want without having to shush them.

The trade-off is that restaurants and the main attractions aren’t as easy to reach on foot. Having a car makes things much easier, but you can still reach the main hubs and beaches by bicycle, scooter, or golf cart. Plus, the hotels here tend to have larger rooms and lots of family activities, so it’s a nice area for anyone who wants a bit more space and a bit less noise.

Marriott’s Barony Beach Club – $$$ 

Marriott’s Barony Beach Club is definitely a splurge, but so worth it if you want a proper island vacation. It sits inside the prestigious Port Royal Plantation enclave, so you already know you’re in for a pretty special stay. I love the pool options here, including one with a water slide, and the multi-room layouts make it a great pick for families.

There are also outdoor patios, barbecue grills, fire pits, foosball, and ping pong tables, which are especially handy for longer stays. Honestly, with so much to do here, the hardest part might be actually leaving! You also won’t have to go far for food, with everything from burgers to salads available on-site, plus a marketplace in the main lobby for snacks and drinks around the clock.

Price-wise, expect to pay anywhere from around $150 to $600+ USD per night, depending on the room and your travel dates.

I also recommend The Westin Hilton Head Island Resort & Spa, especially for its direct beach access and convenient location near attractions like Tanger Factory Outlet, Port Royal Golf & Racquet Club, and Coastal Discovery Museum. Just a heads-up if you’re planning your stay: the resort is scheduled to close completely from November 2, 2026, through April 16, 2027.

Island Links Resort – $$ 

If you’re after a quiet condo-style stay rather than a crowded oceanfront hotel, Island Links Resort is a great option. The focus here is on families, with massive accommodations, some of which can fit up to 10 guests. You’ll have a fully equipped kitchen to help you cook delicious homemade meals and save even more that way. To make your life even easier, there’s a washer and dryer in every apartment.

Outside, the party is by the two heated pools, including a children’s pool with water fountains and a splash pad. I also love the shuffleboard courts and weekly family pool parties, giving you plenty to do for entertainment.

Though it’s not beachfront, you’re very close, and you can use the free seasonal golf cart shuttle service to get there with no fuss. Prices start at just $160 USD per night.

Hampton Inn Hilton Head – $ 

Hampton Inn Hilton Head is a great budget hotel with lots of perks. For starters, they serve free breakfast, which includes waffles and unlimited coffee, plus free parking and no hidden fees. There’s also a pool, a gym, and a small marketplace for those late-night cravings or a post-beach ice cream.

Location-wise, it’s directly adjacent to Hilton Head Airport (SAV), but don’t worry, noise isn’t really an issue since there’s mainly light daytime traffic. While you can’t really walk to the beach, you can get to spots like Folly Field Beach or Islanders Beach Park in less than a 10-minute drive.

You’ll also have some excellent restaurants within a 5-minute drive, so grabbing dinner is easy too. With prices starting at just $90 USD per night, it’s one of the best affordable stays on the island.

Top Activities on Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head may be famous for its beaches and golf courses, but some of my favorite family memories actually came from getting out on the water and exploring beyond the beach! From spotting dolphins to soaring above the coastline, here are a few activities I’d definitely prioritize while you’re here.

• Cruise around Hilton Head in search of dolphins – We booked this 90-minute dolphin cruise as a family, and seeing Atlantic bottlenose dolphins swimming around Hilton Head was easily the highlight! You’ll cruise along scenic Broad Creek, look for dolphins and local birdlife, and learn about the island’s ecosystem along the way. Best of all, dolphin sightings are guaranteed, so this is such an easy and fun activity to add to your trip.

• Explore historic Daufuskie Island – Of everything my family and I did in Hilton Head, this guided Daufuskie Island tour was our favorite! You’ll cruise over to the island before hopping aboard golf carts to visit historic sites like the First African Baptist Church and Mary Fields School. We especially loved learning about Daufuskie’s Gullah history!

• Kayak through Hilton Head’s waterways – If you want to get a little more active, this guided kayaking tour takes you through the salt marshes and tidal creeks around Broad Creek. Along the way, you can look for dolphins, manatees, and tons of local birdlife while your naturalist guide teaches you about the area.

• Set sail on a pirate adventure – Traveling with younger kids? This pirate adventure aboard the Black Dagger looks like SO much fun! Kids get pirate names, face paint, and temporary tattoos before setting sail from Harbour Town on a treasure hunt, complete with games and an epic water cannon battle against Stinky Pete. It’s much more than a regular sightseeing cruise!

• Go parasailing over Calibogue Sound – For something a little more adventurous, we had SO much fun on this parasailing experience! We did it as a family and soared above Calibogue Sound with amazing views of Hilton Head, Daufuskie Island, and Harbour Town Lighthouse. You can even ask for a dip before landing like we did!
