Planning a trip to Tropea but still trying to figure out where to stay? Look no further!
Tropea is (in my opinion) one of the most striking towns on Italy’s southern coast. The town itself is perched on a clifftop overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the beaches below look almost too beautiful to be real.
We know it can be difficult to settle on a place to stay when everywhere looks so incredible. So to make your decision a little easier, we’ve broken down the three best areas to stay in Tropea. We’ve also included our top hotel picks for good measure!
Ready? Let’s get to it!

This is the area and hotel we loved the most and suggest booking ASAP!
Our FAVORITE area to stay in Tropea is the Historic Center! We love its charming old streets, incredible views, and how close it is to the town’s best restaurants, landmarks, and viewpoints.
We love La Divina for its stylish rooms and unbeatable location! It blends modern comfort with old-town charm, with bright rooms, soundproofing, and some private balconies or terraces.

Where to Stay in Tropea Map
Overview of the Best Areas to Stay in Tropea

Tropea may be compact, but where you stay can have a surprisingly big impact on your trip. The Historic Center puts you close to the town’s main sights and restaurants, Upper Tropea is handy for transport and parking, and the beachfront is ideal if you want to stay close to the sea.
Most of Tropea is easy to explore on foot, but keep one important thing in mind: the town center sits high (and we mean high) above the coast. Steep staircases connect the two, so if you or someone you’re traveling with has limited mobility, make sure to check hotel access carefully before booking. Cars are also restricted in parts of the Historic Center, while parking near the beaches can be tricky during summer, so having a car isn’t always as convenient as you might expect.
If you’re not sure when to go, know that July and August are Tropea’s busiest months, and we recommend booking several months ahead if you have your heart set on a central or beachfront hotel. The town becomes much quieter from November through March, but you’ll find fewer restaurants and tours operating then.
Before we get into the details, here’s a quick overview of each area:
- Tropea Historic Center – Best for first-time visitors – Stay here to have Tropea’s romantic lanes, historic buildings, restaurants, and famous clifftop viewpoints on your doorstep. La Divina is our top hotel pick here, with stylish rooms in the heart of the old town.
- Upper Tropea – Best for train travelers and easier parking – This newer part of town is close to the train station, supermarkets, and roads that are easier to reach by car. You’ll still be within walking distance of the Historic Center, too. Here, we recommend Hotel Colomba D’Oro for its elegant rooms and convenient location between the station and old town.
- Tropea Beachfront – Best for beach vacations – Stay below the cliffs for easy access to sandy beaches, swimming, and boat trips on the Tyrrhenian Sea. Mediterranean Boutique Hotel is our top choice here, thanks to its pool, sea views, and easy walk to the beach.
Important Tip
Multiple Tropea trips have taught us that this city doesn’t reward spontaneity when it comes to planning. The good places get snapped up months in advance, leaving the overpriced and underwhelming options for last-minute travelers.
The sweet spot for booking Tropea accommodations is 3-4 months out—enough time to secure good rates but not so far ahead that you’re locking in plans excessively early.
Where to Stay in Tropea
Tropea Historic Center

BEST FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS
Pros
- Close to Tropea’s best landmarks, viewpoints, and restaurants
- Easy access to the cathedral, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and Santa Maria dell’Isola overlooks
- The most memorable setting for a first visit or romantic break
Cons
- The restricted-traffic zone makes driving and parking more complicated
- Reaching the sand involves steep stairs, and many historic buildings have limited accessibility
If you’re visiting Tropea for the very first time, we definitely recommend staying in the Historic Center.
We love this area for first-timers because it puts the town’s restaurants, shops, historic churches, and viewpoints within easy walking distance. During the day, you can wander through the narrow lanes, stop for lunch in one of the piazzas, and take in the view of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola below. The area is also convenient in the evening, as you can head out for dinner or gelato without worrying about taxis or driving back to your hotel.
The main downside is that the Historic Center is on a cliff, so you’ll need to tackle a lot of stairs to reach the beach. Much of the area is also covered by a ZTL, or restricted-traffic zone, and nearby parking can be hard to find during the busy summer months. And, since many hotels occupy older buildings, it’s worth checking whether yours has an elevator if stairs could be an issue.
Overall, though, the Historic Center is a great choice if you want the quintessential Tropea experience. Yes, the stairs are hard work, but we think the atmosphere and convenient location are well worth it.
S’O Suites Tropea – $$$

If you’re traveling with friends or family and want plenty of room to settle in, S’O Suites Tropea makes for such a stylish, luxury base. Rather than standard hotel rooms, it offers spacious suites and apartments, some with kitchens, private terraces, and views over Tropea’s rooftops or the sea.
The Via Carmine location keeps you within walking distance of the historic center but slightly removed from its busiest crowds. There’s also a garden, sun terrace, and reservable off-site parking, which is such a useful perk in Tropea!
Rates generally range from €80 to €300+ per night, with larger units offering the best value when shared.
Another luxury option we love is Palazzo Mottola Tropea. It’s located in a beautifully restored old-town building and (in our opinion) is perfect for a romantic, central stay.
If staying closer to the water is your priority, Accommodation Mare Grande is also worth a look. The beach and Santa Maria dell’Isola are practically next door, so you’ll be perfectly placed for lazy days by the sea.
La Divina – $$

For our top overall pick in Tropea’s Historic Center, it’s got to be La Divina. This polished, modern property places you right among the old town’s restaurants, piazzas, and honey-colored buildings.
The bright rooms come with air conditioning, coffee-making facilities, and soundproofing, which is a major bonus in such a central location. Some rooms also have a balcony or terrace, and breakfast is available before you head out to explore.
Rooms generally range from €90 to €130+ per night, with midsummer dates sitting at the upper end.
SOLMARIS Tropea City Center is another solid mid-range option, with contemporary rooms and a terrace near the old town. We always recommend this hotel to travelers who appreciate modern comforts, but still want to stay in a central, historic location.
Another option we love to recommend is B&B Island Tropea. This bed and breakfast-style hotel has some of the cutest balconies on this list, with incredible views overlooking the city and sea.
Eliseo Palace Tropea – $

For a more affordable option right in the heart of town, you can’t go wrong with Eliseo Palace Tropea. The interiors here are fresh and contemporary, and Tropea’s restaurants, cathedral, and evening passeggiata are all just a few minutes away on foot.
We love this hotel because the rooms come with air conditioning and private bathrooms, while breakfast is available before a day at the beach. The property also advertises private parking at €20 per day, which is a rare perk in central Tropea, but we recommend confirming availability when you book just to make sure it will be available on your dates.
Nightly prices typically run from €70 to €150+, depending on the room and season.
B&B Rivellini is another central option worth checking out. We love this hotel because it has apartment-style rooms, making it a practical choice for families and longer stays.
Another hotel we absolutely adore in central Tropea is Le Terrazze. It has a beautiful panoramic terrace where breakfast is served each morning, and on a clear day, you may even be able to see Stromboli in the distance.

Upper Tropea

BEST FOR TRAIN TRAVELERS AND EASIER PARKING
Pros
- Close to Tropea train station, supermarkets, and roads leading out of town
- More properties offer parking or easier vehicle access than in the Historic Center
- Old Town is generally only a 5- to 15-minute walk away
Cons
- The surroundings feel newer and less atmospheric
- Getting to the coast may still require steep stairs or a longer downhill route
Upper Tropea is by far the most practical place to stay. This newer part of town is close to the train station, supermarkets, pharmacies, and the main roads leading toward the rest of Calabria.
We always recommend Upper Tropea to anyone arriving by train, traveling with a lot of luggage, or renting a car. Parking is never guaranteed, but hotels and guesthouses here are more likely to offer it, or at least be close to public parking. You’ll also have an easier time getting out of town for day trips without having to navigate the narrow streets first.
Depending on where you stay, you’ll usually be around a 5- to 15-minute walk from the Historic Center. This means you can still head there for dinner, sightseeing, and an evening stroll before returning to a quieter part of town.
The only trade-off is that Upper Tropea doesn’t have quite the same historic atmosphere. The streets around the station are more functional, and reaching the beaches still involves a downhill walk, stairs, or a slightly longer route.
That said, it’s hard to beat Upper Tropea if easy transportation and a quieter place to stay are your main priorities.
Tropis Hotel – $$$

For our top luxury pick in Upper Tropea, we can’t recommend Tropis Hotel enough!
This hotel offers resort-style facilities within minutes of Tropea station. That combination is rare here, and it makes the hotel a strong luxury choice if you want to balance sightseeing with genuine downtime.
The large outdoor pool is the obvious summer highlight, while the spa, indoor pool, gym, restaurant, and bar give you options on slower days. Location-wise, Tropea station is just a few minutes away on foot, and you can walk into the Historic Center without needing a taxi. The hotel also offers parking, although it’s sensible to confirm availability before arrival during peak season.
As for pricing, you can expect rates of approximately €120 to €260+ per night.
For something a bit more low-key, Harmony Tropea Rooms & Suites offers sleek, modern rooms near the station. It’s a great alternative if you want a stylish stay but don’t need all the facilities of a large hotel.
Sentido Michelizia Tropea Resort is another appealing splurge on the edge of town. With pools, gardens, and a relaxed resort atmosphere, it’s ideal if downtime is a big part of your plans.
Hotel Colomba D’Oro – $$

For our mid-range option, it’s got to be Hotel Colomba D’Oro. We especially love this hotel for anyone arriving in Tropea by train. The station is less than a 10-minute walk away, so you won’t have to haul your suitcase across town!
Inside, the hotel has elegant, air-conditioned rooms (some with balconies), plus a 24-hour front desk. Breakfast is usually included with many bookings, and bicycle rentals and airport transfers can be arranged. The property does have an elevator, although you’ll still need to check your route to the beach.
Price-wise, you can expect rates to typically fall between €60 and €240+ per night, which is very reasonable considering the location.
If Hotel Colomba D’Oro is all booked up on your preferred dates, we also recommend checking out Hotel Calysea Tropea. This hotel has a gorgeous rooftop terrace and free private parking, which is always a plus!
For something a bit more traditional, B&B Leonida offers basic rooms in a super convenient location less than a 15-minute walk from the train station. We always recommend this one to solo travelers because it’s affordable, welcoming, and easy to reach without a car.
KALÓ ROOMS – $

For our top budget-friendly pick in Upper Tropea, you can’t go wrong with KALÓ ROOMS. It’s just a 7-minute walk from Tropea station, so you can drop off your bags and start exploring the moment you arrive.
The rooms are modern and air-conditioned, and several come with a private balcony. You won’t find a pool or restaurant here, but with central Tropea just a short walk away, you’ll have plenty of places to eat and explore nearby.
In terms of pricing, you can expect rates to typically range from a very reasonable €60 to €80+ per night.
MareMò Accommodations is another budget-friendly option we love near the train station. The rooms are bright and comfortable, while the gorgeous terrace and picnic area give you plenty of space to relax outside.
Another affordable option worth checking out is Hotel Virgilio. We especially like its convenient location close to both Tropea train station and the Historic Center, plus private parking is available if you’re traveling by car.

Tropea Beachfront

BEST FOR BEACH VACATIONS
Pros
- Sand, swimming areas, beach clubs, and boat departures are close by
- Dramatic views up toward Tropea’s cliffs and Santa Maria dell’Isola
- With hotels directly on the beach, there’s no need to descend from town every time you want a swim
Cons
- Restaurants and nightlife are concentrated in the town above
- Beach parking is difficult in summer, and climbing to the center can be tiring
If your Tropea plans revolve around saltwater and sunshine, staying near the beachfront is an easy call. You can walk out for an early swim, return to your room during the hottest part of the afternoon, and join a boat tour along the Costa degli Dei without repeatedly tackling the descent from town.
The scenery is a major part of the experience here. Tropea’s pale cliffs rise behind the sand, with old buildings perched along the edge and Santa Maria dell’Isola standing above its rocky ledge (honestly so gorgeous!).
The main drawback becomes obvious around dinnertime. Most of Tropea’s restaurants and liveliest evening streets are in the Historic Center, which means tackling a steep staircase or taking the longer uphill route. Parking near the waterfront can also be difficult in July and August, so keep this in mind if you’re traveling by car.
If you do go on to book a hotel in this area, make sure to look carefully at what the hotel means by “beach access.” It could describe a flat walk, a private staircase, or a route using the public steps, so make sure the route suits everyone in your group.
Hotel Rocca Della Sena – $$$

For our top luxury pick near the beachfront, we absolutely love Hotel Rocca Della Sena. This is an adults-only hotel perched on a cliff, but it has its own private staircase leading down toward the beach.
If relaxation is high on your agenda, you’ll love the panoramic terrace, where you can unwind in the hot tub while admiring the coastline. There’s also a sauna and small fitness area, and some rooms even have a private balcony.
Rates typically range from €200 to €400+ per night, but we think those sunsets are worth the splurge!
Another nearby luxury option we love is Villa Giada. Like Hotel Rocca Della Sena, it also has direct access to the beach, making it easy to squeeze in a swim whenever you feel like it.
Sunset Beach Club Tropea is another tempting choice. We love this hotel because it’s literally right on the beach, so there’s no uphill journey waiting after your final seaside cocktail.
Mediterranean Boutique Hotel – $$

For our mid-range pick, we always recommend Mediterranean Boutique Hotel, which sits below the main town and offers easy access to the water.
When you don’t feel like heading to the beach, you can spend a lazy afternoon by the outdoor pool or relax on the terrace overlooking the sea. There’s also an on-site restaurant and bar, so you won’t need to climb into the center every time you want something to eat or drink.
Price-wise, you can expect rates to typically range from €80 to €270+ per night depending on the season, which is excellent value for such a stunning beachfront location.
Another mid-range option we like to recommend is Bonsai. With air-conditioned rooms and private balconies, what more could you want from a comfortable base in Tropea?
If you need another backup option, Lisca Bianca Tropea is also worth checking out! We love its gorgeous sea views and private staircase leading down to the beach, while the Historic Center is still within easy walking distance.
La Porta del Mare – $

For an affordable stay near the coast, you can’t go wrong with La Porta del Mare. We love this hotel because the rooms are clean, contemporary, and offer a comfortable place to recharge. Some rooms even have a balcony with views of the sea, which can be tricky to find at a budget-friendly price point.
Location-wise, you’ll be within easy reach of central Tropea and the routes down to the beach. You’ll also have access to a beautiful terrace with seriously incredible sunset views.
Rates generally range from €80 to €220+ per night, so make sure to book early if you want the lowest summer price.
If La Porta del Mare is all booked up on your preferred dates, Residenza Luce Sul Mare is another option on the sea-facing side of town. It’s just a 4-minute walk from Costa degli Dei Beach, and every room has a refrigerator, which is super handy for keeping drinks and beach snacks cold.
B&B Dominus Luxury Rooms is another option worth checking out. We love this hotel because they offer plenty of breakfast choices each morning, and the beach is less than a 10-minute walk away.

Top Activities in Tropea

Tropea’s beaches could easily keep you busy for your entire trip, but we highly recommend seeing more of the Coast of the Gods from the water! If you’re still planning your itinerary, here are three of our favorite activities in Tropea. These are some of the most popular tours in the area, so we recommend booking early to make sure you don’t miss out!
- Cruise along the Coast of the Gods – One of the best ways to enjoy Calabria’s coastline is on this snorkeling boat tour. You’ll cruise past cliffs and hidden coves, stopping along the way to swim and snorkel in the clear water. With the route and navigation taken care of, all you need to do is sit back and enjoy!
- See Tropea from above – If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous, this tandem parasailing experience lets two people fly together while taking in views of the beaches, old town, and Santa Maria dell’Isola. It’s a fun choice for couples or friends who want to add some adrenaline to their sightseeing.
- Captain your own boat – If you’d rather explore at your own pace, you can charter your own boat for a half-day adventure. We love this experience because you can shape the day around your group instead of following a fixed tour schedule.

Renting a car in Italy is one of the best ways to explore the country beyond the cities—think charming Tuscan villages, dramatic Amalfi Coast drives, and hidden gems in the countryside. While Italy’s roads can be a little chaotic (especially in cities), with the right preparation, renting a car here can be an unforgettable and rewarding experience!
We always use Discover Cars when booking our rentals, and highly recommend them. They compare dozens of providers to find you the best rates, include important filters like “automatic transmission,” and offer affordable full insurance coverage.
